agreeing with potra on RECLASSIFICATION. This happens when e.g. a building was classified to be used for office purposes and now is reclassified for use as apartments or was classified as a warehouse and now can be converted to low cost housing etc. etc

It is either renovation or reclassification upgrading/downgrading i.e. from historical building to a regular office or condominium etc.

The way it's used in italian doesn't necessarily mean that there's a change in the "destinazione d'uso". It could mean simply that the buildings are being upgraded or redeveloped to conform to electricity/safety standards or to eliminate damp, dry rot problems etc. Try googling "riqualificazione del palazzo" for reference.

Hi Giusy - sound's fine to me - I always tend to associate it with "bonifica" - land reclamation - but it does also mean "restoring something to a satisfactory state". Lot's of hits for "building rehabilitation on Google too.
