... no. Hi dear colleagues Let me ask you this question, since I often get mad when my daughter calls me two, three, four, five, six times practically for asking me nothing. And this year is even more difficult because she is at home in the afternoon. Sometimes it could also be a pleasure, but if I am very busy and she is not, well that's a huge problem. I repeat over and over again that: I am working, this is my office (dining room), the door must remain closed (who cares?), do not call me, I am absent, I am working, I am not here, where am I? Of course not. How could a child understand this? Also, working from a dining room does not help at all explaining to a young child that the room is an office within office hours. Is she old enough to read the time and understand hours? My mother understands perfectly but even my dad has trouble with this issue: I have to keep telling him that even though I work from home, unless a matter is urgent, I cannot deal with it within office hours. Other working people are totally fine (plumber, etc.). I once had two men install a new staircase just outside my office door. Took them a good couple of days. Although I was very busy, it didn't disturb me at all. I was even thankful to not be able to reach the kettle and biscuit box outside lunch. ▲ Collapse | | | neilmac Spain Local time: 10:33 Spanish to English + ... Yes but not easy | Jan 16, 2017 |
They can be "in my vicinity" but not if they're blabbering away about whatever. if they're lying by the pool, sunbathing on the terrace or something like that, it's not an issue.

I can concentrate on my work when people are around and even when they make a certain amount of noise but NOT when they actually interrupt me with a question. That really drives me mad. A certain occasional visitor who works in a highly technical scientific environment and would be furious to be interrupted about where the spare toilet rolls are kept, or something, has no hesitation in coming into my office without warning to ask or tell me things. He simply can't seem to take it on board that I'm working and that my work requires, probably, as much concentration as his. The same applies to plumbers or technicians working in the house. It's fine if they get on with their work, even if they make noise, but not if they actually ask "Do you have a screwdriver?" and so on. Why don't plumbers and technicians have their own screwdrivers? ☺ ▲ Collapse | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 10:33 French to English
I hide in the basement where everyone leaves me alone. I can hear everyone coming and going though so I know what's going on. When my children were young, it was impossible and I actually preferred working in an office at that time. | | | Michael Harris Germany Local time: 10:33 Member (2006) German to English No problem at all for me | Jan 16, 2017 |

It is a bit more difficult when the children have exhausted their fantasy and are then looking for a victim. But Susanna, it all depends on how old your children are when they are there in the afternoon. Sometimes, if you can, it is better to deal with them in the afternoon and work in the evening. Its all about the flexibility of us self-employed people.

I answered other because I understood this not only as children. If my husband is around, or any other adult, it is not a problem, even if they ask a question from time to time. But working with my 2-years-old son around is not possible, of course.

Sometimes I have to get away and lock myself in a hotel room in order to get things done. While in Brazil, I stay at my family place, in the countryside, and it is quite common that people (family, neighbours, 'clothes, blankets, kitchen ware, 'heaven' sellers) will pop up without calling before. :/
I live alone. My youngest daughter has the keys to my apartment and visits me every day at least twice to walk the dog, but she is very respectful of my time and business: when she sees that I’m busy she just says “Hi” and stays out of my way… But, on the other side, when I worked in-house I bought one espresso coffee machine for my office and though it was nice to chat and have a coffee with my colleagues occasionally I had to remind them that work was waiting for me… | | | Julian Holmes Japan Local time: 17:33 Member (2011) Japanese to English Yes, of sorts | Jan 16, 2017 |
If they are all gagged and strapped to chairs with duct tape. So, I suppose "No". I can just about handle smooth jazz - no vocals - played low in the background. My hard rock head-banging days are long gone behind me.

I have dj earphones, and a selection of rainstorm and ocean waves audio downloade from you tube. After about 5 mins I become oblivious to what happens around me. Try it. It works. | | | Nilton Junior Brazil Local time: 09:33 Member (2009) English to Portuguese + ...
As long as they are not talking to me or making too much noise, it does not bother me at all. | | | Susanna Martoni Italy Local time: 10:33 Member (2009) Spanish to Italian + ...

[Edited at 2017-01-16 10:57 GMT] Much better, yes. But in the evening it is not always possible for me to work. Let's say that some years ago it was easier to deal with my 11-years-old girl in her afternoons, but now she has to do her homework and she tends to ask things related to homework, or even to nothing, in general. After all, our small family is me and her. | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Can you concentrate if family or other people are in your vicinity while you are working?
