Experience AND reliability Dec 30, 2016

If I were looking for a collaborator my requirements would be not only professional experience and reliability, which I consider both fundamental and should go hand in hand, but also team spirit and positive attitude.

P.S.: I didn’t take the question to mean a translation collaborator (I already have a good network of experienced, reliable, efficient, like-minded translators, which was built over the years) but an administrative collaborator (read between the lines if you must: th

The quality of their translation Dec 30, 2016

I would look for anyone but... Dec 30, 2016

A collaborator. I am tired of seeing that word. It can even mean "co-conspirator" as in collaborator in a crime. I would rather "team up with" someone.

Getting back to the point, I would choose a native speaker of the source text.

I'll "partner" with you on that thought Reed.

I think there are two reasons the word collaborator is becoming more and more common in English.

I hate to say it but, firstly, it's an age related issue. Those of us who are baby-boomers grew up seeing the word collaborator nearly always following the word "Nazi", so it was a bit of a no-no to use it in any other context. I've noticed that Millennials, on the other hand, some of whom can't even remember the day the twin towers came down, don't seem to have any qualms using the word in the sense of partnering or teaming up with with someone or something.

Another reason the word collaborator is gaining ground in English is that it's a nice, neat translation from some Romance languages where it doesn't seem to have the same negative connotations it took on in English so many years ago, and these days everyone translates into English.

Reliability Dec 30, 2016

I think "reliability" covers most of the rest...

For translation? Dec 30, 2016

The quality of their work would be my first priority if this is about working with another translator. I can't imagine why that option was left out--unless I misunderstood the question.

Reliability would be next, but it's a distant second to quality.

A collaborator should be remorseless and devious, Dec 30, 2016

be they an accomplice or just an abettor. Unfortunately, these traits are not on the list.

A partner maybe? Dec 30, 2016

I wouldn't call this person a collaborator.... sounds too much like some criminal event.

To me the 2 most important factors would be/are reliability and experience. Everything else can be negotiated.

a combination of Dec 30, 2016

I worked as a project manager for a small translation company and I selected the translators for the different projects, and what is definitely important is a combination of

- Ability to work under pressure - everybody can provide a good translation when give 3000 words in a month
- Reliability - whatever happens you MUST deliver the translation on time (obviously some problems do not allow you to do so - but at least let me know!!!)
- Availability - I can you 3 times, i

THEN
- Experience - obviously important (but related to the experience in my opinion)
- Their rates - I never looked for cheap translators, but rates MUST be related to quality.

Native speaker and availability come first. Next are reliability, experience and quality of their work, all equally important. Formal education and location don't matter and I would not demand (ability to) work under pressure.

Please, pretty please Dec 30, 2016

…think about including A combination of the above in the options to choose. We are not 4th graders who can only think of just one word at a time.

Thank you and may Odin bless your loins.

Absolutely, I couldn't agree more.
