Presuming that what is meant by this question is « if your income from freelancing became 0 », I would cope financially somehow as I have other means of income, but I’m not sure how I would cope mentally and emotionally… | | | XXXphxxx (X) United Kingdom Local time: 18:26 Portuguese to English + ... I think one would be mad to maintain one's current lifestyle and not cut back on luxuries. With that in mind I could probably double the length of time on zero income. | | | Khanda Poland Local time: 19:26 Polish to English + ...

For once, the poll has a funny answer: Uhh…Until lunch? So I chose that one!
The older you are, the more savings you have. Or not. Unfortunately, I still don't wear a Rolex despite being close to, or not far from, half a century old. But we have enough savings and money well invested to survive a few years with the same lifestyle. In real life, if my income reached 0, I'd have other concerns than maintaining my lifestyle. Lifestyle should be related to earnings. No earnings, no lifestyle. Hugh. Philippe | | | From hand to mouth | Dec 17, 2016 |

If I had no job and were somehow disabled, yet could move, I still could pay my bills and food about a year at such rates. Otherwise, I guess I would last without air, warmth, water, food, work, and money not much longer than others.

Good question | Dec 17, 2016 |
I think I can live for six months if my income became 0. From this question arises another question. A "classic" one. Is translator a good job?
If your income became "0" wouldn't you change your lifestyle immediately? Or would you spend all your savings, if any, just to maintain your current lifestyle? Anyway thanks for the "positive" question just at the end of the year! It gives me a sense of .. uhm what's the word... ah yes INSTABILITY | | | Mario Freitas Brazil Local time: 14:26 Member (2014) English to Portuguese + ...
Two months, considering the jobs I have to receive in the next two months. Two more months using my primary savings. Then probably another 4 months until desperation. This is not totally bad, but it's far from the ideal situation. But of course if one's income becomes "0", their lifestyle should drop significantly, unless we're talking about a very irresponsible person. So considering a significant drop in my lifestyle, which would likely occur in such case, I could probably extend ... I think this is a very inappropriate thread and shouldn't have been posted here at all. This sort of thing could happen to any of us at any time - lose a job, fall into bad health, or be subject to an event that could change our lives in a drastic way. Why even contemplate such a scenario? Or course, I would be absolutely devastated if I went to ZERO income, but I also know that I and everyone else on this forum would continue to survive.

I don't know if I would call this thread inappropriate. After all, it doesn't have swear words or nude pictures, right? I wonder, however, if whoever posted this thread is currently living in the Northeast region of the United States, where the Jonas storm is landing with very frigid temperatures. Maybe the guy (or gal) thought: Zero degrees, what do I do? What do other people do with zero degree temperatures? What a second! What about zero income? That'll be fun! The question draws upon the definition of wealth by Buckminster Fuller, most likely in the rendition by R. Kiyosaki (see e.g. here). The ultimate conclusion of that theory is that a person is truly wealthy when his/her accumulated savings/investments can sustain his/her current lifestyle indefinitely without any income from external sources. Answering this question, I would tolerate a couple of months of no work without getting worried; my internal resources would tide me over for 6 months to a year with my current ongoing expenses, but some of these expenses serve to maintain my earning ability, and may thus be disregarded for the purpose of this question. So, the answer is roughly a year. ▲ Collapse
If we're talking about translation income, I could manage for about 6 months without changing my lifestyle, since I also have a pension (from an in-house translation job) and some savings. If my pension was wiped out and I had no income at all, I would get a reverse mortgage on my house, which would give me just enough to live on, but I would have to change my lifestyle immediately.
