More than one Jul 8, 2016

I can't just pick one.
Eye fatigue and strain, back pain, leg pain, hand strain from typing.
And of course the usual stress.
Is it just me?

Poor leg circulation + back pain Jul 8, 2016

I suffer from poor circulation in my legs specially in the warm weather but it's probably more of an age thing than a work-related ailment, though sitting for long hours only makes it worse...

I do suffer occasionally from back pain and these are also not related to work as I have two hernias after a car accident some years ago, but again sitting for long hours only makes it worse...

Getting old? Jul 8, 2016

I've been at it for more than 40 years and so far I can't attribute any of my ailments to my working conditions. Getting old doesn't count, does it?

I reckon this should have been a multiple choice question! Jul 8, 2016

Although in my case the "ailments" could also be age-related. After a very intense week (or more) of translating I usually have one, two or three of the complaints, which makes it all the more pleasurable when I have a week with no work and everything improves again.

Some, if not most, of the above.

PS: Further compounded by high blood pressure caused by rage at idiot clients wasting absurd amounts of time by tinkering with perfectly good translations after delivery, then having their work rejected due to the "poor English" of their pathetic efforts. Seriously, they can't even write one sentence without a mistake.

Precisely!

If I've had any of these, none could be specifically attributed to translating.

In the dawn of the personal computer area, I asked one rather famous ophthalmologist whether standing long hours in front of a computer monitor (VGA monochrome then, usually green) would impair one's vision. He told me about the need for shifting focus now and then, and said that, to the best of his limited computer knowledge, by the time staring at the computer screen began to impair one's vision, that person's brain should have been already compromised!

Work-related neck pain Jul 8, 2016

I just can't seem to get my chair the right height, and if that's not the problem I don't know what I should do.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience they could share with me on getting professional advice about physical ergonomics?

Thank you!

Incidentally, I had an experience with neck pain.

In the days when most people used 14" or 15" CRT monitors, once I had access to ten (all CRT) monitors of varied sizes to choose from. Two of these were 21", so I tried one of them for two weeks. For the first time I had (rather severe) neck pain!

I realized that instead of shifting my eyes, I was shifting my head to cover the entire screen space. So I selected a 17" monitor from that lot, and used it until it was time to switch to a flat one. Please note that all these were 4:3 - not widescreen.

Now I've been using a 19" flat screen, 4:3 monitor for many years, and I haven't had any instance of neck pain. I read about colleagues who use 2 or 3 monitors, all widescreen, and it makes me wonder whether shifting the head everywhere wouldn't cause wear and tear to the neck.

BTW, the screen stands 90 cm (35 inches) from my face in all cases. I have prescription glasses for exactly this distance, which I use most of the time. These are NOT good for reading, I have other glasses for that, plus a multifocal one for general use.

Why wasn't rabies on the list?

Breathing Jul 8, 2016

Rabies hasn't been a problem (yet), but a few years ago I noticed that I tend not to inhale and exhale sufficiently at the computer - a discovery that has greatly improved my overall well-being, concentration and work.
