Ebbene sì: il pesce più aggressivo di tutti è il pesce pagliaccio. Proprio lui: Nemo. Quel pesciolino arancione dall’aria gentile, se vi avvicinate troppo all’anemone vi attacca, punto. Farebbe lo stesso con uno squalo balena di quattordici metri. La sua stazza rende ridicole le sue cariche a testa bassa. Immaginate però che delle sostanze sospette, che ne so… del plutonio, oppure un beverone per culturisti finiscano in mare e che alcuni Nemo, per una mutazione genetica, crescano fino ad un paio di metri. Paura eh? Quelli che conoscono i bene pesci pagliaccio, come i fotografi per esempio, davanti alla prospettiva di un Nemo mutante potrebbero scegliere di fotografare soltanto insetti e fiori.
Ma torniamo alle insidie reali. Il tormento del neofita, che fu anche quello dei primi pionieri della subacquea, è invece più vicino alla realtà: è la paura di ciò che non si conosce, di creature ed un ambiente sui quali non si ha ancora controllo. Piano piano, però si formano le statistiche: la maggior parte degli attacchi da squalo sono avvenuti in superficie. L’immersione sembra quasi una zona franca per gli attacchi da squalo. Assimilato questo concetto al livello limbico, il subacqueo può permettersi di nuotare in tutto relax con squali tigre, squali toro e altre sanguinarie creature.
Ma l’uomo non s’accontenta mai. Il suo più grosso problema, come già detto prima, è il controllo: una volta presa confidenza con le creature marine comincia a trattarle come ha sempre trattato le mucche, i cani, i cavalli le galline... Sconfitto il primevo timore, l’uomo inizia a cavalcare mante, tartarughe e delfini; comincia a dar da mangiare agli squali, alle razze, alle cernie, tutto ciò che incontra, come ha già fatto con cavalli e galline, trasformando una porzione di reef nel suo personale pollaio.
Per accrescere la loro leadership, cioè esercitare il controllo sui subacquei, molte guide e divemaster manipolano murene, danno pesci morti agli squali toro e aprono la bocca ai pesci pietra, mostrandone l’interno bianchissimo. Ho visto subacquei manipolare pesci scorpione, pesci leone, dar da mangiare alle tartarughe, ai sergenti, alle razze. Non ho ancora visto guide subacquee giocare con serpenti di mare, né con le cubomeduse, ma questo non esclude che da qualche parte sia già accaduto o che, mentre scrivo, qualcuno ci stia provando. Mi chiedo anche se qualche guida australiana si sia mai cimentata in qualche tipo di show con un ‘Salty’, un bel coccodrillo di mare. Sarei molto curioso di sapere com’è andata. Ovviamente queste guide sono maschi alfa (anche le guide femmine vanno considerate maschi alfa). Ci sarà un altro alfa nel gruppo di subacquei? Scatta l’emulazione. E con l’emulazione si moltiplicano gli incidenti.
Le teorie sui metodi di primo soccorso, invece, si sono sempre moltiplicate da sole, e così l’elenco dei miracolosi antidoti da cambusa. La fantasia dei subacquei non conosce limiti. Poi la gente si domanda com’è mai che molti diventino artisti, registi scrittori. Conosco un istruttore che è stato arrestato per aver cercato di salvare la vittima di una caravella portoghese, Physalia physalis. Che l’urina contenga anche ammoniaca è sacrosanto. Ma che la si debba scaricare addosso ad un tipo urlante, direttamente dalla vescica… è come minimo poco evidente per le famigliole che affollano una spiaggia in estate. Quando invece Danny, chiamiamolo così, riuscì a farsi pungere il sedere da un pesce scorpione, ci siamo chiesti come ci fosse riuscito, e l’abbiamo fatto accovacciare in un tino pieno d’acqua molto calda, i famosi 45°, ma lui strillava che erano di più. Ovviamente, temendo di bollire qualcosa di più prezioso delle sue pallidissime chiappe, restò per quasi un’ora tremando in una posizione da crampi. Vi risparmio la foto.
Paula, invece, tutte le volte che qualcuno si fa male con il corallo fuoco, ghigna: “Glielo abbiamo spiegato mille volte che bisogna star lontani dai coralli! La natura si difende!”. In effetti, gli invasori siamo noi. Pesci, meduse e coralli non invadono il nostro spazio, non gettano i loro rifiuti tossici nelle nostre case. Io e Paula, quando ci vediamo a Sharm el Sheikh, scendiamo in spiaggia a El Hadaba, per parlare. Davanti a noi c’è la piattaforma del reef costiero. E c’è sempre qualcuno che ci cammina sopra. “Sono stanca di urlare, spero che un pesce pietra faccia il suo lavoro.” Dice Paula con quell’aria che ha quando sembra avvilita. Poi si alza seduta, abbraccia le ginocchia e fa: “Dovremmo allevarne, di pesci pietra, sai? E metterne un po’ in giro. Vediamo se continuano!” “Sarebbe un’altra stortura, Paula…” “Eh no! Abbiamo aiutato fior di ribelli a difendersi da dittatori sanguinari, fornendo loro le armi… Per il mare invece non facciamo niente.” Paula riesce sempre a colpirmi. Non so se abbia ragione o torto, ma le rispondo: “Sui pagliacci mutanti al cesio, o al plutonio ci stiamo già dando da fare…” Lei mi guarda, con quell’aria di sufficienza da maschio alfa. E si sdraia di nuovo, pensando al suo allevamento di combattenti per la rivoluzione.

Yes, that’s right: the most aggressive fish of all is the clownfish. You’ve got it, Nemo himself. That orange little fish who looks so sweet will be sure to attack you if you get too close to his anemone. He would do the same thing to a 14-metre whale shark. His size makes his ramming ridiculous, but just imagine what would happen if some weird substance like plutonium or say body-building supplements leaked into the sea and some genetically altered Nemos were to grow a couple of metres long. Scary, eh? Those who know clownfish well, like photographers, for example, if faced with mutant Nemos might understandably opt to go and take pictures of insects and flowers instead.
But let’s go back to the real problems. The torment of beginners, which was also that of the first diving pioneers, is instead closer to the truth: it is the fear of the unknown, the creatures and the environment of which no-one has control. Slowly, though, statistics have emerged: most shark attacks have taken place on the surface. Diving seems almost entirely safe from shark attacks. Once this concept has been taken on board at the limbic level, divers can happily swim with tiger sharks, bull sharks and other bloodthirsty creatures.
But Man is never satisfied. His biggest problem, as said before, is control: once he becomes confident with marine creatures, he begins to treat them like cows, dogs, horses and chickens... Once he has defeated his primeval fear, he starts riding devilfish, turtles and dolphins. He starts feeding sharks, skates, groupers and everything he meets, as if they were horses or hens, turning part of the reef into their personal farmyard.
To increase their leadership, i.e. exert their control over their fellow divers, many guides and divemasters fondle moray eels, feed dead fish to bull sharks and open the mouths of stonefish, to show the pure white inside. I have seen divers handle lionfish, feeding turtles, damselfish and sting rays. I haven’t seen underwater guides playing with sea snakes or box jellyfish as yet. But this doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened or isn’t going on as I write. I wonder whether any Australian guide hasn’t already tried putting on a show with a nice ‘Salty’, a marine crocodile. I’d be very curious to find out how that went. Obviously, these guides are alpha males (even the female guides are to be considered alpha males). Should there be another alpha in the diving party and emulation will arise. And with emulation, accidents multiply.
Theories on first aid methods have instead always multiplied unassisted, and so has the list of miraculous galley antidotes. Divers’ imagination knows no limits, and then people wonder how come so many of them become artists, directors and writers. I know an instructor who was arrested for trying to save the victim of a Portuguese Man Of War, the Physalia physalis. That urine also contains ammonia is sacrosanct, but to discharge it on a screaming man straight from the bladder is not such an obvious remedy to the average family on a crowded summer beach. When Danny, as we shall call him, managed to get his bottom stung by a scorpion fish, we wondered how he did it, and we made him squat in a bucket full of very hot water, heated to the famous 45°, though he implored it was hotter. Obviously afraid he’d boil something other than his pale cheeks, he spent almost an hour quivering in an improbable cramp-inducing position. I’ll spare you the photos.
Paula, instead, every time someone hurts themselves on fire corals, sneers: “We’ve told them a thousand times to stay away from the coral! Nature defends itself!” We are the invaders. Fish, jellyfish and coral don’t invade our space, or dump their toxic rubbish in our homes. When Paula and I meet in Sharm el-Sheikh, go down to the beach in El Hadaba, to talk. In front of us lies the coastal reef platform, and there’s always someone walking on it. “I’m tired of shouting, I just hope some stonefish will do the business” says Paula when she’s fed up. Then she sits up, clasps her knees and says “We should breed some stonefish, you know, and plant a few around. I’ll bet that would stop them!” “That would be another distortion, Paula”. “No, no! We have helped so many rebels defend themselves from bloody dictators, providing them with weapons and yet we don’t do anything for the sea”. Paula always strikes me. I don’t know whether she’s right or wrong, but I answer: “We’re already working on the mutant clownfish with the caesium and plutonium...” She looks at me, with her air of alpha male superiority and then lies down again, thinking of her school of fighters for the revolution.
