Source text - English I first met David Ogilvy in March 1961, soon after I joined O&M in New York as an account executive. I met him, along with other new recruits, in a conference room at 2 East 48th St. which was home to the New York agency during its years of stellar growth, the David years.
At that time David was Chairman of the agency which was only the New York office with a tiny branch in Toronto and a confused relationship with Mather & Crowther in London which was headed by David's elder brother Francis Ogilvy.
David's qualifications for starting an advertising agency in New York were remarkably thin and that may be one of the reasons why his agency succeeded so well as he was not bound by the conventions which gripped most agencies at the time. David determined to build an agency with a difference and it was his vision of that difference which he shared with me and my fellow recruits that March day so long ago.
David had had several careers before starting his agency but only one of them fueled the fire of his ambition for his agency and that was his time as a researcher at Gallup and Robinson. At Gallup David had focused on advertising research and it was the lessons he learned there that gave David the confidence to start his agency. David earned, over the years, a rare reputation as a creative director but his first love, his real talent was as a teacher with "guidelines" he had culled from the study of ads. These guidelines were summarized in a "Magic Lantern" presentation so called because they were presented originally on glass slides viewed through a heavy brass projector called a Magic Lantern.
Originally there was only one Magic Lantern presentation and it was only on print advertising. Print because it was the dominant medium in the industry before the introduction of color TV and print because it was the medium David knew best.
David was, of course, much more than a researcher. He was a superb leader, a man of great intellect, a man of immense charm and endless curiosity. He was also a brilliant new business winner.
Like most new agencies, David's first accounts were small - Hathaway shirts, Rolls Royce, Wedgwood China, Zippo lighters, Guinness Stout, Schweppes and British Travel. All these were print accounts and David used the work done for them as honey to attract big bears like Shell. New Yorker magazine has a readership and influence way beyond its circulation figures but in the 60's this influence was even more pronounced than today. And because the New Yorker was read by Chief Executives and marketing people, David concentrated his ads in this medium so that Ogilvy ads dominated and advertisers formed the view that the agency was much bigger than it really was.
I have always seen the New Yorker strategy as evidence of David's great instinct as a new business hunter.

Source text - German Um zu verstehen wohin man geht, muß man zuerst wissen woher man kommt. Das wird auf jeden Fall von vielen Historikern behauptet, wenn man sie fragt, warum sie für das, was sie so den ganzen, lieben Tag treiben, überhaupt Geld bekommen. Aber seien wir doch mal ehrlich: Wer hätte sich noch nicht gefragt, warum wir uns über das Tierreich erhoben haben (zu 90% wenigstens), warum die Dinge so sind wie sie sind, oder ganz einfach woher so geniale Dinge wie das Kondom, Mottenkugeln oder die Wasserspülung eigentlich herkommen. Da dies alles Themen sind die, obwohl durchaus reizvoll, hier völlig fehl am Platze wären, widmen wir uns doch lieber einer passenderen Frage: Woher kommen eigentlich unsere heissgeliebten BreakBeats?
Knifflig. Wo soll man da Anfangen? Wie wäre es mit dem klassischen Satz: „Everything began with the drum“? Und in der Tat ist die Geschichte des rhythmischen Trommelns durchaus auch eine Geschichte, die eng mit der Menschwerdung an sich verknüpft ist. Aber die Frage wann der erste Australopithekus auf seinen Streifzügen durch die Savannen des vorzeitlichen Afrikas zum ersten mal feststellte, dass es, wenn man mit seinem Kopf gegen einen holen Baum schlägt, nicht nur unheimlich weh tut, sondern auch überaus interessant tönt, diese Frage läßt sich wohl aus heutiger Sicht der Dinge nicht mehr eindeutig beantworten, und würde zudem den Rahmen unseres überaus bescheidenen Magazins sprengen. Also wo Anfangen? Was war der Beginn dessen, was wir unter dem heutigen Begriff des BreakBeats verstehen? Um das zu klären ist es vielleicht besser, sich kurz von der Geschichte des Beats an sich zu trennen und zu fragen, wann den eigentlich das Wort „BreakBeat“ zum ersten Mal im modernen Kontext auftauchte. Ja, probieren wir es so.

But the question of when the first Australopithecus on his forays through the savannahs of prehistoric Africa noticed that it not only hurts like hell to hit your head on a hollow tree but that it also sounds very interesting is probably no longer definitively answerable today, and would moreover be beyond the scope of our modest magazine. So where to begin? What was the inception of what we now know as breakbeats? In order to resolve this, it might be better to disassociate from the history of the beat for a moment and to ask yourself when exactly the word "breakbeat" first emerged in a modern context. Yeah, let's try that.
