Source text - German Ein Wort noch zur Frage der stammesgeschichtlichen Verwandtschaft des Großen Pandas, die noch lange unbeantwortet blieb und Gegenstand vieler Kontroversen wurde. Zeitweilig galten der Große und der Kleine Panda tatsächlich als Nächstverwandte, und sie bildeten die nur aus ihnen beiden bestehende Raubtierfamilie Ailuridae, die auch Katzenbären genannt werden. Die herausragende Gemeinsamkeit der beiden Arten ist ein zweiter »Daumen« an der Vorderhand, der trotz seiner Daumenähnlichkeit kein echter sechster Fingerstrahl ist. In Wirklichkeit handelt es sich um eine fingerartige Verlängerung des sogenannten Sesambeins, eines ansonsten unauffälligen kleinen Knochens der Handwurzel. Dieser »Pseudodaumen« dient dem Greifen der pflanzlichen Nahrung. Nach heutigen wissenschaftlichen Ergebnissen, die insbesondere auf DNA-Daten beruhen, bildet der Große Panda allerdings doch wohl eher zusammen mit dem Eisbären, dem Braunbären, zwei Schwarzbären-Arten, dem Malaienbären, dem Lippenbären und dem Brillenbären die Familie Ursidae, die Echten Bären. Der Kleine Panda ist dagegen wohl mit den Kleinbären, zu denen der Waschbär gehört, den Mardern, den Stinktieren und sogar mit den Robben näher verwandt als mit den Echten Bären. Seine Position im Stammbaum der Raubtiere allerdings gilt als keineswegs sicher geklärt. Wenn nun auch der Große Panda innerhalb der Ursidae eine etwas isolierte Position einnimmt, lag David mit seiner Einordnung des Pandas als Bär also letztlich gar nicht so falsch.
Im Laufe der letzten 150 Jahre, die seit Davids Beschreibung vergangen sind, ist Ailuropoda melanoleuca intensiver und genauer untersucht worden als die meisten anderen Raubtiere. Man mag es kaum glauben, aber dieser behäbig-gemütliche Vegetarier ist zoologisch gesehen tatsächlich ein Raubtier. Unzählige Besonderheiten im Körperbau, aber auch im Verhalten, in der Physiologie und besonders der Nahrungspräferenz machen den Großen Panda innerhalb seiner Raubtierverwandtschaft zu einer besonderen Tierart. In Davids Originalbeschreibung ist davon keine Rede. Schwarzweiß ist er eben, der Bär, mit einem charakteristischen Muster aus Schwarz auf einem weißen Bärenfell. Der schönste aller Bären sei er, sein Panda, schrieb David. Und so prangte schließlich der neue wissenschaftliche Name als Überschrift über der Beschreibung: Ursus melanoleucus.
Translation - English A word regarding the panda’s phylogenetic relations, a question that long went unanswered and was the object of much controversy. For some time, the giant and red pandas were actually considered close kin, and they were the sole members of the Ailuridae family of predators. The predominant similarity between the two species is a second “thumb” on the front paws that, despite its thumb-like qualities, is not a real sixth digit. Instead, it’s a finger-like extension of the so-called sesamoid bone, an otherwise unobtrusive small carpal bone. This “pseudo thumb” is used to grasp plants while eating. According to modern scientific findings based largely on DNA analyses, however, the giant panda is better grouped with the polar bear, brown bear, two black bear species, sun bear, sloth bear, and spectacled bear in the Ursidae family, the true bears. The red panda, meanwhile, would be a closer match with the procyonides—which include raccoons, martens, skunks, and even seals—than with the true bears. Its position in the phylogenetic tree of predators is by no means secured, though. However isolated the giant panda’s position may be within the Ursidae family, David was not so very amiss in his classification of the panda as a bear.
Over the course of the 150 years that have passed since David’s description, Ailuropoda melanoleuca has been more intensively and carefully studied than most other predators. It’s hard to believe, but zoologically speaking, this portly, easy-going vegetarian is actually a predator. Amongst its relatives in the predator family, the panda is a distinctive species, given countless physical peculiarities, along with unique behaviors, physiology, and especially food preferences. David’s original description makes no mention of these. It’s just a black-and-white bear with characteristic patterning. The most beautiful of all bears, his panda, David wrote. And thus the description was emblazoned with the new scientific name as its headline: Ursus melanoleucus.

Source text - German Benthams panoptisches Gefängnismodell ist ohne Blick auf das englische Strafsystem und seine Praxis nicht zu verstehen. Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts gehörte Folter zur Normalität im Gefängnisalltag.
Manche Gefangene lagen wie Tiere in Ketten. Die anderen blieben unbeaufsichtigt, waren unabhängig von Vergehen, Herkunft, Geschlecht und Strafmaß gemeinsam eingepfercht in den dunklen Kellerverliesen oft notdürftig umgenutzer Bauten. Die hygienischen Verhältnisse waren der Nährboden für Krankheiten und Seuchen. Der Tod war allgegenwärtig. Körperlich geschwächt, waren viele Häftlinge
nicht in der Lage, die ihnen auferlegte Strafarbeit auszuführen. So setzten erneut Zwang und Folter ein, der Leidenszyklus begann von vorn. Hinzu kamen Straftaten zwischen Gefangenen, Mord und Brandstiftung, schließlich Aufstände, die mehrfach (zusammen mit Krankheiten) in die Städte getragen wurden und zu allgemeinen Unruhen führten.
Im Auftrag des Unterhauses legte der adlige Politiker John Howard 1777 die dreibändige Untersuchung »The state of the Prisons in England and Wales« (»Der Zustand der Gefängnisse in England
und Wales«) vor. Das Buch sorgte für erhebliches Aufsehen. Howard riet zu umfassenden Reformen, die unterfinanzierte Kerker in Besserungsanstalten verwandeln sollten. Der Gefangene als »Mensch« –das bedeutete Investitionen zu seinem Wohl, gute und ausreichende Nahrung, Bewegung, Hebung der Moral, Steigerung der Arbeitsleistung. An die Stelle von Verwahrung und Misshandlung sollte Erziehung treten, mit einem bis dahin ungewöhnlichen Ziel: Rehabilitation. 1778, nachdem Bentham kurz zuvor seinen Erstling »A Fragment on Government« veröffentlicht hatte, meldete sich der dreißigjährige Philosoph mit einem Aufsatz über die Zwangsarbeit von Gefangenen zu Wort, die im sogenannten »Hard labour bill« geregelt war. Das große Thema der Zeit – die Menschenrechte – war in Benthams Denken von nun an eng mit dem Strafvollzug verbunden, dem direkten Ausdruck des politischen Systems. Wenn das veränderte Selbstbewusstsein des Menschen in Frankreich und den USA zur fundamentalen Erneuerung politischer Ordnung geführt hatte, so konnte die englische Gesellschaft ihre humane Verfasstheit beweisen, indem sie Teilhabe an der gewünschten Wandlung dort ermöglichte, wo sie am wenigsten selbstverständlich war: bei den Erniedrigten und Beleidigten.
Translation - English It’s impossible to understand Bentham’s panoptic prison model without looking more closely at the English penal system and its practices in the mid-eighteenth century. Torture was an everyday practice. Some prisoners were kept like animals in chains. Others went unmonitored, corralled as a single group—regardless of offense, origins, gender, or sentence—in the dark subterranean dungeons of often provisionally repurposed buildings. The unhygienic conditions provided a breeding ground for sickness and pestilence. Death was everywhere. In their physically weakened state, many prisoners were unable to perform the labor imposed by their sentences. This resulted in renewed force and torture, and the cycle of suffering began anew. Furthermore, there were criminal acts between prisoners, murders and arson, and finally, uprisings that often spilled over (along with disease) into the cities and led to general unrest.
On behalf of the House of Commons in 1777, the aristocratic politician John Howard published a three-volume study entitled The State of the Prisons in England and Wales. The book caused a considerable stir. Howard recommended sweeping reforms to transform the underfinanced dungeons into correctional facilities. Seeing prisoners as human beings meant investing in their well-being, providing sufficient nourishment and room to move, improving morale, and boosting work performance. Detention and abuse were to yield to education, with a goal unfamiliar at the time: rehabilitation. In 1778, shortly after Bentham’s “A Fragment on Government” had been published, the thirty-year-old philosopher contributed his own essay on forced prison labor, as outlined in the so-called hard-labour bill. From that point forward, Bentham viewed the major topic of the day—human rights—as closely bound to corrections, itself the unmediated outward expression of the political system. If the newfound self- assurance of the individual had propelled a fundamental renewal of political order in France and the United States, then English society
could demonstrate its own humanity by bringing change to where it was least expected: among the poor, disenfranchised, and incarcerated.

Da ist zu wenig Bewegung drin, sage ich und trete näher ans Fenster heran, nur das Flackern der Fernseher und das Wechseln der Lichter, es ist ein unaufgeregtes Spiel. Sonntag, dreizehnter Dezember, zwanzig Uhr dreiundvierzig, ich möchte die Lichter brennen sehen. Novaks Mann sitzt schon eine halbe Stunde still. Dreh dich, flüstere ich, so ist es gut. Er hebt den Arm und legt ihn langsam wieder ab, den Kopf in Richtung Küche gewandt. Spricht er mit ihr? Ich sehe sie nicht, ihre rosa Jacke, die sie an Sonntagabenden trägt, als ob es keine andere Farbe gebe, sie hat sie heute bestimmt wieder an. Novak weiß nichts von Farben und sie weiß nichts von Fenstern, noch kein einziges Mal hat sie herübergeschaut, obwohl es dazu nicht viel bedarf. Den Kopf kurz heben, oder besser vorher einen Schritt an das Fensterbrett heran, die Hände locker darauf ablegen, man spürt die Wärme der Heizkörper dann gleich. Kalt ist es geworden in den letzten Novembertagen, trotz der warmen Temperaturen, die Kälte kommt vom Wind. Novak wird gut eingeheizt haben, sie wird sagen: Heinz, schließ das Fenster, mich friert schon so. Wie damals, als wir zum ersten Mal dort drüben auf Besuch gewesen sind, der Rauch stand in der Luft, aber sie sagte: Lasst das Fenster zu, ich komme mit eurem Rauch gut zurecht. Euer Rauch, sagte Karla, obwohl sie selbst doch die ganze Zeit nichts anderes tat.

Ich trinke Wein auch gerne ohne Cola, sagte ich, aber Heinz war schon auf den Balkon gegangen und Peter starrte mit Karla auf den Fernseher im Fernseher, bis sie sagte: Ich glaube das nicht.
Wir blieben lange an diesem Abend, wir tranken viel, uns allen wurden die Lippen blau. Ich sagte: Zum Glück haben wir nicht weit hinüber. Sunday, December thirteenth, eight forty-three P.M. I want to see the lights on. Novak’s husband has been sitting motionless for half an hour now. Just turn, I whisper, there you go. He lifts his arm and lowers it slowly back down, his head toward the kitchen. Is he speaking to her? I don’t see it, the pink jacket she wears on Sunday evenings as if other colors didn’t exist—she must be wearing it again today. Novak, for God’s sake, move. As if he were staring at the wall all evening, I know they’ve mounted the TV there, I know the apartment looks different now. On that first evening together, it had still been a console model, and it ran quietly in the background. At regular intervals, Karla went out onto the balcony to fetch the plastic bottles of premixed cola and red wine. Why she mixed the drinks beforehand, I couldn’t say. That evening, she answered my question as follows: when I come home from shopping, I’d rather get it over with right away, I don’t have the energy later in the evening. And I laughed, because Peter laughed and so did Heinz, the energy to mix red wine and cola, he repeated, but Karla simply gazed at the television, where an ad for televisions was running. I like wine without cola, too, I said, but Heinz had already gone out onto the balcony, and Peter was staring at the television on television with Karla, until she said: I don’t believe that.
We stayed for a long time that evening, we drank a lot, our lips all turned purple. I said: at least we don’t have far to get home. Karla let the chinchilla out, and we talked about what this home was, where we were still so new and where the first tenants to move in three years earlier now counted as longtime residents. I would never move back into an apartment someone had lived in before, Heinz said. You never know what might have happened there. I got my start in DE>EN commercial translation in 2008 in Berlin, freelancing for media monitoring and advertising agencies with clients in a wide range of industries, from automotive and aeronautics to banking/finance, postal services, logistics, hospitality, consumer hand tools, pharmaceuticals and more.
In 2014, after having returned to the US to pursue my Master's degree in education from Harvard, I won the Gutekunst Prize of the Friends of Goethe New York, an award for emerging translators, for my translation of Veit Heinichen's "To Each His Own Death."
Since then, my focus has been on literary translation. I have translated more than a dozen books to date, with more under contract. These include fiction, non-fiction, YA and children's titles.
I currently work with commercial agencies in Germany and Switzerland using memoQ and SDL Trados 2017.
