Source text - English RINSING AFTER PICKLING
The final pickling operation is to drain and rinse. Drain to conserve HCL and to
make best use of the rinse water, i.e., do not make it acid unnecessarily. Also
draining limits further reaction with the steel itself thus conserving HCL and preserving the steel surface.
Rinsing is important for two reasons. First it dilutes and washes off the pickle
acid and stops the reaction completely; second, it prevents carry over of acid into
the preflux bath where it can interfere with the next stage - fluxing. Therefore
always rinse as well as possible within the limits of the plant. Two baths are
incorporated - one to remove the initial quantities of acid and then a final rinse to
remove the remainder. When the first bath is no longer usable switch the tanks
around using the second one first and refilling the first one; or at least discharge
the first tank and then pump the contents of the second into the first to conserve
water and reduce disposal costs etc. Or, consider using the spent first rinse
liquor as the first rinse liquor after alkaline cleaning.
If a double rinse is not possible, then ensure that the rinse water is changed frequently and/or a continual make-up and overflow system is used.
The properly prepared steel is now ready for fluxing.
4. OPERATION & ADJUSTMENT OF THE HYDROCHLORIC ACID PICKLE
BATH
Function: To remove scale and oxide in the most economical manner.
a. The Hydrochloric Acid (HCL) pickle bath temperature should preferably
be between 18ºC and 21ºC. However, 16ºC to 25ºC is acceptable.
Too low a temperature slows the pickling rate and when too high, the acid
tends to attack the metal as well as the scale and rust, etc.
b. As the bath is used to remove rust and scale three things happen to the
bath:
i) depending on the time allowed for draining, the volume of the bath
will be reduced;
ii) the HCL content or concentration (often referred to as “acid
strength”) will be reduced;
iii) the iron content of the bath increases.
c. The reduction of volume of the bath can readily be rectified by adding
more HCL and water as for the original charge and does not usually
cause much difficulty.
d. The initial HCL concentration or strength is usually made up to about
16.5% w/v maximum or 160 g/l, and should be reconcentrated when the
concentration falls to about 10% w/v (100 g/l).GTI ENGINEERING INC., USA Page 15
Hold at this concentration by making additions until iron concentration
reaches about 100 g/l (Fe level : 10% w/v) then allow acid to exhaust to
30 - 40 g/l at which level the pickling rate becomes uneconomical.
The method of doing this is set out in the section headed “Making up the
Acid Bath” - but see para (e) below also.
e. All the iron, whether it be rust, scale or metal reacting with HCL, forms
iron chloride and goes into solution in the bath. This dissolved iron has
the effect of slowing down the pickling rate and eventually leads to the
bath liquor being discarded when the iron concentration reaches a level
of 8 to 10% w/v (80 to 100 g/l).
Note: % w/v X 10 = grams per litre (g/l).
f. Free Acid Determination
Ideally three or more pickling baths should be operated so that at least
one or two solutions are relatively fresh and the pickling capacity of the
plant is maintained at an adequate level. Generally the pickling solution
with the highest iron content (e.g., 60 - 80 g/l) is used for stripping for
rejected galvanized quality. However, a Strip Tank is used for stripping
defective galvanized coating and a preflux solution with the addition of
aqueous ammonia can be made by the plant personnel.
Frequency of analysis is determined on a needs basis and once a satisfactory make up regime has been arrived at, weekly checks are probably

5. METHOD OF ESTIMATION OF IRON AND ACID CONCENTRATIONS
The analytical equipments required and recommended methods for obtaining the
iron level in hydrochloric acid solutions are given below:-
Method A. Analysis - Kits required
1 X 2 ml pipette
1 X 25 ml burette
1 X 250 ml conical flask
1 litre Solution “A” (0.358 N Potassium Dichromate Solution)
1 X dropper bottle of Indicator A (Sodium Diphenyl Amino Sulphonote)
1 X 100 ml measuring cylinder
A few pieces of granulated zinc
1 X 250 ml of 25% Sulphuric Acid
i) Take a fresh sample of pickle bath liquor and allow to stand for a few
minutes for the solids to settle out. Pour off the clear liquid into the
measuring cylinder and add 2 or 3 pieces of granulated zinc. Wait until
the whole solution is a greenish color.
ii) With the pipette draw off 2ml and run this into about 100ml of clean water
in the clean conical flask.
iii) Fill burette “A” to zero with Solution “A” supplied (0.358 N Potassium Dichromate). Keep the Solution A bottle tightly closed.
iv) Add approximately 5 ml of 25% Sulphuric Acid.
v) Add a few drops of Indicator A, and whilst swirling the conical flask,
slowly add Solution A from the burette until a permanent purpose color
remains in the flask.
vi) Read off the concentration of iron from the burette in percent weight by
volume (% w/v).
Note:
The iron concentration should not exceed 10% w/v (100 g/l) in HCL or 1.0% w/v
in Preflux solutions.
Translation - Spanish 3. ENJUAGUE DESPUÉS DE DECAPAR
La operación final de decapado es drenar y enjuagar. Drene para conservar HCL y para aprovechar al máximo el agua de enjuague, es decir, no la haga innecesariamente ácida. El drenaje también limita la reacción adicional con el acero mismo, conservando así el HCL y conservando la superficie del acero.
El enjuague es importante por dos razones. Primero se diluye y elimina el ácido del decapado y detiene la reacción por completo; segundo, evita que el ácido se transfiera al baño de pre-fundente, donde puede interferir con la siguiente etapa: el fundente. Por lo tanto, enjuague siempre lo mejor posible dentro de los límites de la planta. 4. OPERACIÓN Y AJUSTE DEL BAÑO DE ÁCIDO HIDROCLORICO DECAPADO
Funcionamiento: Para eliminar incrustaciones y óxido de la manera más económica.
a. La temperatura del baño de ácido clorhídrico decapado (HCL) debe estar preferiblemente entre 18ºC y 21ºC. Sin embargo, 16ºC a 25ºC es aceptable. Una temperatura demasiado baja ralentiza la velocidad de decapado y, cuando es demasiado alta, el ácido tiende a atacar el metal, así como la incrustación y la oxidación, etc.
b. A medida que el baño se usa para eliminar el óxido y las escamas, suceden tres cosas:
i) dependiendo del tiempo permitido para el drenaje, el volumen del baño se reducirá;
ii) se reducirá el contenido o la concentración de HCL (a menudo denominado "fuerza ácida");
iii) aumenta el contenido de hierro del baño.
c. La reducción del volumen del baño se puede rectificar fácilmente agregando más HCL y agua en cuanto a la carga original y generalmente no causa mucha dificultad.

1 X 250 ml matráz cónico
1 litro de solución "A" (solución de dicromato de potasio 0.358 N)
1 X frasco cuentagotas del indicador A (difenil amino sulfonote de sodio)
1 X 100 ml cilindro de medición
Unas pocas piezas de zinc granulado
1 X 250 ml de ácido sulfúrico al 25%
i) Tome una muestra fresca de licor de baño de decapado y deje reposar durante unos minutos para que los sólidos se asienten. Vierta el líquido claro en el cilindro de medición y agregue 2 o 3 piezas de zinc granulado. Espere hasta que toda la solución sea de color verdoso.
ii) Con la pipeta, extraiga 2 ml y colóquelo en aproximadamente 100 ml de agua limpia en el matraz cónico limpio.
iii) Llene la bureta "A" a cero con la solución "A" suministrada (0.358 N de dicromato de potasio). Mantenga la solución A en la botella bien cerrada.
iv) Añadir aproximadamente 5 ml de ácido sulfúrico al 25%.
v) Agregue unas gotas de Indicador A, y mientras agita el matraz cónico, agregue lentamente la Solución A de la bureta hasta que quede un color permanente en el matraz.
vi) Lea la concentración de hierro de la bureta en porcentaje en peso por volumen (% p/v).
Nota:
La concentración de hierro no debe exceder el 10% p/v (100 g/l) en HCL o el 1,0% p/v en soluciones pre-fundente.
