Source text - English Epidural Stimulation applies a continuous electrical current to specific locations on the posterior structures of the lumbar spinal cord. The surgically implanted device sits over the spinal cord protective coating, where it is able to stimulate locomotor-like activity. Epidural Stimulation can be offered to patients with both incomplete and complete injuries.
The Central Pattern Generator (CPG) is a control centre inside the spinal cord that interprets sensory information. Epidural stimulation activates the spinal cord nerve circuitry with impulses that would ordinarily originate in the brain.
The device activates the para-sympathetic nervous system, which is not the original route via which brain connects with the limbs, so even if the spinal cord is fully injured, there is still an alternative route to connect to the lower parts of the body. The signal that is conducted through this para sympathetic system is low strength, so it needs enhancement and extra power from the device.
In non-medical language, a stimulator is implanted and wired up to the spinal cord. The stimulator is controlled by a remote control. Whilst on, the stimulator commands can actually bypass the injury side and allow voluntary movements and other secondary improvements.
Over an extensive 30-40 days of rehabilitation in our ward the patient and their brain, muscles and nerves "learn" how to consistently create voluntary movements whilst the device is activated. This is a very delicate process and requires a lot of experience by the therapist. We call this process “Mapping”. The more experienced and knowledgeable the Mapping Therapist is, the quicker progress can be achieved and the more gains the patient can get. Equally important is the support after patients departure. We make sure the patient learns how to use the device and its remote on its own, pre-install tailored exercise programmes and continue to be available at all times to discuss and implement new programmes.

O dispositivo é implantado cirurgicamente, situado sobre o revestimento protetor da medula espinhal, onde ele é capaz de estimular atividades motoras. A Estimulação Epidural pode ser oferecida para pacientes tanto com lesões incompletas quanto completas.
O Gerador de Padrões Central (GPC) é um centro de controle dentro da medula espinhal que interpreta a informação sensorial. A Estimulação Epidural ativa os circuitos nervosos da medula espinhal com impulsos que seriam normalmente originados no cérebro.
O dispositivo ativa o sistema nervoso parassimpático, que não é a via original pela qual o cérebro se conecta aos membros, então mesmo que a medula espinhal esteja totalmente lesionada ainda há uma rota alternativa para conectar as partes inferiores do corpo. O sinal que é conduzido através deste sistema parassimpático é de baixa intensidade, então ele precisa de aprimoramento e energia extra do dispositivo.
Em uma linguagem não médica, um estimulador é implantado e ligado à medula espinhal. O estimulador é controlado por um controle remoto. Enquanto ligado, os comandos do estimulador podem passar pelo lado lesionado e permitir movimentos voluntários e outras melhorias secundárias.
Durante um intensivo período de reabilitação de 30 a 40 dias o paciente, seu cérebro, músculos e nervos “aprendem” como criar movimentos voluntários consistentes enquanto o dispositivo está ligado. Este é um processo muito delicado e exige muita experiência do terapeuta. Chamamos este processo de “Mapeamento”. Quanto mais experiente e bem informado o Terapeuta de Mapeamento, mais rapidamente os progressos podem ser alcançados e mais ganhos tem o paciente. Igualmente importante é o suporte ao paciente após sua volta para casa. Source text - English All models are an abstraction of reality that attempt to conceptualize key relationships of a system, Models can be both quantitative and conceptual in nature, but all models are integrators of multiple fields of knowledge. Consequently, models generally have several important and varied uses.
Forest growth and yield models are no different. Foresters often have a general sense of a stand's developmental trajectory and what can be done to alter it. However, it generally takes years of experience to achieve this level of expertise and, even then, quantifying the predictions can be difficult. Forest growth models attempt to bridge this gap by providing model users the ability to predict the future condition of the forest.
Ultimately, growth models are the quantitative generalizations on the knowledge of forest stand development and their response to silvicultural treatments. Forest growth and yield models have a long, and rapidly expanding, history of development. Their development and use has particularly increased in the last two decades, due in part to the greater availability of personal computers to perform both data analysis and complex simulations. This has resulted in a wide array of modeling approaches, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. In particular, models differ in the type of data used and the method of construction.
This book attempts to provide an overview of the primary concepts involved in forest modeling, the various techniques used to represent the determinants of growth, and the techniques needed to both develop and use a growth model properly.

Os modelos podem ser de natureza tanto quantitativa quanto conceitual, mas todos os modelos são integradores de vários campos do conhecimento. Consequentemente, os modelos geralmente têm importantes e variados usos.
Modelos de crescimento e produção florestal não são diferentes. Os silvicultores muitas vezes têm uma noção geral da trajetória de desenvolvimento de um povoamento e o que pode ser feito para altera-la. No entanto, geralmente se leva anos de experiência para se alcançar este nível de conhecimento e, mesmo assim, quantificar as estimativas pode ser difícil.
