Source text - Italian La proposta di vendita al Museo di Napoli della collezione di terrecotte di Raffaele Gargiulo, ceramista affermato, restauratore di vasi e bronzi antichi, figura di primo piano del Museo di Napoli, protagonista del commercio di antichità in Europa, uno dei più grandi mercanti napoletani di antichità degli anni Venti e Trenta dell’Ottocento, viene fatta nel dicembre del 1852, ma solo dopo oltre due anni di serrate trattative sul prezzo e sull’entità dell’intera vendita, si giunge all’acquisto il 29 maggio 1855 per la cifra di seimila ducati. Per ciò che concerne le terrecotte, altre due piccole transazioni successive, del 13 dicembre 1856 e del 16 dicembre 1859, porteranno alla vendita di ulteriori pochi oggetti.
Il Gargiulo nasce il 17 marzo 1785 a Napoli da Aniello Gargiulo. Avviato sedicenne, nel 1801, al restauro dei vasi greci sotto la guida di Biagio Finati – impiegato della Real Fabbrica della Porcellana e “inventore del ristauro di detti Vasi” e di Gennaro Paterno, nell’aprile del 1808 chiede di entrare nell’Officina dei Restauri dei Vasi Etruschi del Real Museo di Napoli. Nel corso degli stessi anni di sicuro inizia anche a lavorare come mercante di antichità, come testimonia una missiva inviata il 3 gennaio 1824 al Ministro di Casa Reale:
“Per diletto sin da’ miei primi anni coltivai lo studio delle Belle Arti e delle Antichità; obbligato poi da circostanze di mia famiglia a divenire il sostegno del mio vecchio Genitore, di una Zia e di due Sorelle, mi dedicai al ristauro de’ Vasi così detti Etruschi, de’ Bronzi, e di altri Monumenti antichi, facendone anche de’ medesimi un commercio ...”
Il 15 giugno del 1808, in qualità di “Secondo Restauratore”, Gargiulo entra nell’Officina del Restauro dei Vasi Etruschi, per quanto ancora senza paga. Nel febbraio 1811 è ammesso tra gli impiegati salariati, con uno stipendio mensile di 18 ducati, che l’anno successivo viene aumentato di un terzo. Nel 1812 chiede di poter diventare restauratore del Museo privato di Carolina Murat, per la quale dice di aver già restaurato quasi tutti i vasi delle due celebri collezioni di Monsignor Terrusio e di Giovanni Caminada, entrambe immesse nel suo museo. Nel 1814 restaura, sempre per Carolina Murat, i celebri vasi oggi a Monaco scavati l’anno precedente nell’ipogeo Monterisi Rossignoli di Canosa. Nel 1816 è promosso “Primo Restauratore” dei Vasi, con un salario di 28 ducati e gli viene dato un assistente, Domenico Fortunato (figlio di Michelangelo, anche lui restauratore di vasi), che, a partire dagli anni ’30, lo avrebbe spesso sostituito nell’esecuzione materiale dei restauri. Nel 1817 diventa Direttore dell’Officina del Restauro dei Bronzi. Nel 1822 è nominato Direttore dell’Officina di Restauro dei Vasi. Dal 1832 è Socio corrispondente da Napoli dell’Istituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica. Nel 1845 diviene “Aiutante Controloro” del Real Museo, una carica che lo vede coinvolto, affianco al Controloro e al Direttore, nella gestione quotidiana del Museo. Nello stesso anno è nominato socio onorario della Reale Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli.
Accanto alle mansioni nel Museo e agli incarichi ottenuti dai Sovrani napoletani, Gargiulo lavora negli stessi anni anche come restauratore per una clientela privata, avendo tra i suoi clienti membri di case reali e celebri collezionisti, come, ad esempio, il duca di Blacas, ambasciatore di Francia, collezionista e mecenate tra i più celebri dell’epoca: è su di un vaso della collezione Blacas che il Gargiulo sperimenta, tra l’altro, per la prima volta, tra il 1820 e il 1821, una colla di sua invenzione, che migliora di molto la resistenza e la qualità delle operazioni di ricomposizione delle ceramiche e che l’anno seguente, il 17 agosto 1822, viene poi ufficialmente adottata dal Museo Borbonico.
Nel dicembre 1822 il re di Prussia, in visita a Napoli, lo incarica di restaurare i vasi che Ferdinando I gli ha appena donato, mentre due anni prima aveva eseguito altri restauri per il principe ereditario Cristiano di Danimarca.
Intorno al 1820 apre un magazzino pubblico di antichità, pare intestato a Salvatore Calì, marmoraro e suo collega al museo, ubicato a Napoli, in Via Santa Lucia 87-88.
Più o meno negli stessi anni, ma non più tardi del 1821, per ridurre la concorrenza e migliorare il rendimento delle sue attività, decide di associarsi a due colleghi, Giuseppe De Crescenzo, mercante napoletano di antichità, e Onofrio Pacileo, ricercatore di oggetti antichi.
Oltre a ciò, Raffaele Gargiulo è, come detto, anche un celebre ceramista, uno tra i più stimati tra quanti, nella Napoli dei primi decenni dell’Ottocento, producono quelle imitazioni fedeli di vasi greci oltre ad altri oggetti antichi come bronzi e terrecotte, sulla scia della nota manifattura Giustiniani, allora tanto alla moda. Nel 1832, nell’ambito dell’Esposizione borbonica delle Manifatture napoletane gli è attribuita una medaglia d’oro per “il perfezionamento della vernice de’ vasi imitante l’etrusco”, bissata, nel 1834, da una nuova medaglia d’oro per la copia di un “Gran tripode di bronzo”.
Negli stessi anni, insieme a Pasquale Mollica, celebre ceramista, Gargiulo fonda un’altra società, destinata alla fabbricazione e alla vendita di oggetti all’etrusca. I due aprono un nuovo negozio strategicamente situato a portata di turista, proprio di fronte l’edificio del Real Museo Borbonico.
Presenzia, nel novembre del 1839, al primo esperimento fotografico pubblico in città, diventando il primo napoletano ritratto in dagherrotipo, appena qualche mese dopo la sua invenzione a Parigi.
S’impegna anche nella promozione della sua immagine attraverso una breve, ma interessante produzione scientifica, non nuova ai grandi mercanti d’arte del Settecento, pubblicando alcuni volumi e diversi articoli. Una di queste pubblicazioni costituisce in realtà un concreto ed efficace strumento di promozione della sua società, al di là di quello che lo stesso titolo promette, la Raccolta de’ monumenti più interessanti del Real Museo Borbonico e di varie collezioni private, pubblicata per la prima volta a Napoli nel 1825.
Il libro è venduto per decenni non solo nei negozi del Gargiulo, ma anche all’interno del Real Museo, rappresentando, al contempo, un’abile operazione di marketing. Circa la metà delle tavole, infatti, sono sì relative a collezioni private, ma si tratta in realtà quasi sempre di oggetti venduti dalla ditta Gargiulo, che in questo modo reclamizza, a mezzo stampa, che i suoi oggetti sono stati distribuiti a molti tra i più rinomati collezionisti privati e pubblici del continente: dal duca di Blacas, al cavalier Durand, dal Millingen al Museo Reale di Berlino.
Muore, probabilmente, dopo il 1864, anno di edizione della sua non postuma Cenni storici e descrittivi dell'edificio del Museo Nazionale e Guida, e forse, addirittura, dopo il 1876, quando ancora compare tra i soci corrispondenti da Napoli dell’Instituto di Corrispondenza Archeologica.
Anche se non si conoscono le modalità dell’avvio dell’attività collezionistica del Gargiulo, la Collezione pare fosse già formata nel 1822, anno di edizione di un altro suo volume, Raccolta de’ disegni delle diverse forme de’ vasi italo greci, comunemente detti Etruschi, finora conosciuti.
La collezione è, comunque, già celebre nel 1829, quando insieme ad altre raccolte private, comincia a essere visitata dai maggiori studiosi dell’epoca, come il Panofka che in un articolo di quell’anno ricorda la “collezione dei signori Gargiulo, De Crescenzo e Pacileo”. Nel 1847 Gerhard e di nuovo Panofka visitano presso l’abitazione del Gargiulo, sita a Napoli in Vico Santa Maria della Purità 23 a Materdei, la collezione di terrecotte che questi aveva già intenzione di vendere, paragonandola a quella che era allora considerata la maggiore raccolta del tempo, quella del Marchese Campana a Roma:
“Anche dopo aver visto l’incomparabile raccolta di terracotte del sig. Campana a Roma, non può non sorprendere l’eccellente raccolta dello stesso tipo che il più famoso collezionista, antiquario di vasellame ceramico antico, il sig. R. Gargiulo, con evidente sacrificio di tempo, fatica e soldi ha collezionato e affastellato con criterio nel suo appartamento…”.
L’8 aprile del 1843 è la data del primo acquisto fatto dal Real Museo Borbonico di oggetti di proprietà del Gargiulo. Si tratta “di undici pregevoli tronchi di colonne di molti marmi, con le corrispondenti basi” comperati per la cifra di 490 ducati. Forte di questa avvenuta transazione economica, l’anno seguente il Gargiulo chiede il permesso di esportare fuori del Regno, a Roma, “21 vasi Italo-greci, e ventuno oggetti di bronzo”, assumendo lo pseudonimo di Giuseppe Aurelio di Gennaro, evidentemente per non incorrere in problemi di opportunità legati alla sua doppia figura di commerciante d’arte da un lato e di dipendente del Real Museo Borbonico dall’altro.
Dell’intera trattativa non si viene a sapere più nulla per alcuni anni, né se gli oggetti vengono esportati a Roma dal Gargiulo, né se invece vengono acquistati e immessi nel Real Museo.
Trattandosi di materiale afferente a una collezione privata non è associabile a una stipe votiva o a una sepoltura in particolare, privo dunque di ogni referente stratigrafico e cronologico, per il quale non è perciò possibile ricavarne un quadro unitario, ma solo rilevarne alcuni dati. La piccola plastica è in assoluto la classe meglio documentata, rappresentando circa i tre quarti dell’intera collezione di terrecotte. Interessanti sono anche i dati percentuali della ceramica (59 esemplari) e, soprattutto, della grande plastica (46), non sempre comune nelle raccolte ottocentesche.
Translation - English The proposal of selling Raffaele Gargiulo’s terracottas collection to the Museum of Naples was made in december 1852. Gargiulo was an affirmed ceramist, restorer of ancient vases and bronzes, and one of the main figures of the Museum of Naples and of the trade of antiquities in Europe, besides being one of the greatest neapolitan merchants of the 20s and 30s of the 19th century.
It was only on May 29th 1855, after two years of heated confrontations about the price and the extent of the sale, that an agreement was reached on the price of about six thousand ducats. Two more smaller sales would lead to the purchase of a few more objects on December 13th 1856 and December 16th 1859.
Gargiulo was born of Aniello Gargiulo on March 17th, 1785, in Naples. In 1801, when he was only sixteen years old, he began restoring ancient Greek vases, having as his mentor Biagio Finati, who was an employee at the Royal Manufactory of Porcelain and “inventor of the restoration of such Vases”, and Gennaro Paterno.
In April 1808 he demanded to become part of the Restoration Workshop of Etruscan Vases of the Royal Museum of Naples. During these same years he also began to work as an antiquity merchant, as it is testified in a letter sent on January 3rd 1824 to the Minister of Casa Reale:
“Out of pleasure I cultivated the study of the Fine Arts and Antiquities; subsequently forced by circumstances to support my old Parent, one Aunt and two Sisters, I devoted myself to the restoration of the so-called Etruscan Vases, the Bronzes and other ancient Monuments, also becoming myself engaged in the trading of such...”
On June 15th 1808, Gargiulo enters the Restoration Workshop of Etruscan Vases as “Second Restorer”, although still unpaid. In February 1811 he was finally admitted among the salaried employees, with a monthly wage of 18 ducats, which was augmented by one third the following year.
In 1812 he applied to become Restorer of Carolina Murat’s private museum, for whom he claimed to have already repaired almost all the vases in the famous collections of Monsignor Terrusio and Giovanni Caminada, which had both been incorporated in her museum. In 1814 he restored, once more for Carolina Murat, the famous vases which had been excavated the year before in the hypogeum Monterisi Rossignoli in Canosa, and which are today preserved in Monaco.
In 1816 he was promoted “Chief Restorer” of the Vases, his wage being of 28 ducats, and he was given an assistant, Domenico Fortunato (son of Michelangelo, who was himself a vase restorer) who, from the 30s, would often take Gargiulo’s place in the material execution of the restorations.
In 1817 he became the Director of the Workshop for the Restoration of Bronzes. In 1822 he was appointed Director of the Restoration Workshop of Vases. From 1832 he became Associate Correspondent from Naples for the Institute of Archaeological Correspondence.
In 1845 he became “Assistant Supervisor” of the Royal Museum which involved him, together with the Supervisor and the Director, in the daily managing of the Museum. In the same year he was elected Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Naples.
In the same years, besides his assignments at the museum and the tasks performed for the Neapolitan monarchs, Gargiulo also worked as private restorer, having among his clients members of royal houses and famous collectors such as the Duke of Blacas, the French ambassador, who was one of the most famous collectors and patrons of his time.
It was on one of the vases of the Blacas collection that Gargiulo experimented for the first time - between 1820 and 1821 - a glue of his invention, which very much enhanced the resistance and quality of the recomposition of ceramics and which, the following year, on August 17th 1822, was officially adopted by the Bourbonic Museum.
In december 1822 the king of Prussia, who was visiting Naples, entrusted him with the restoration of the vases which Ferdinand I has just donated to him; two years before he had already carried out other restoration works for the Hereditary Prince Christian of Denmark.
Around 1820 he opened up a public antiquity warehouse in Naples, in Via Santa Lucia 87-88, apparently in the name of Salvatore Calì, who was a marble worker and a colleague of his at the Museum. About during this same period, and certainly not later than 1821, in order to reduce the competition in business and improve the productivity of his activities, he decided to join in business two of his colleagues, Giuseppe De Crescenzo, a neapolitan antiquities merchant, and Onofrio Pacileo, a hunter of ancient objects.
Besides this, Raffaele Gargiulo was, as mentioned, a famous ceramist, one of the most estimated among those who, in Naples, at the beginning of the XIX century, produced faithful imitations of greek vases, along with other ancient objects such as bronzes and terracottas, according to the style of the Giustiniani Workshop which was so fashionable at that time.
In 1832, during the Bourbonic Exhibition of the Neapolitan Workshops, he was bestowed the golden medal for “the perfectioning of the varnish for vases imitating the Etruscan style”. Another golden medal was won for the imitation of a “Great bronze Tripod”.
During these same years, together with Pasquale Mollica, a famous ceramist, he founded a new society aimed at the production and selling of objects in the etruscan style. They opened a new shop strategically placed within tourists’ reach, right in front of the building of the Royal Bourbonic Museum.
Gargiulo is also present, in november 1839, at the first public photographic experiment in town, thus becoming the first Neapolitan ever to be portrayed in a daguerreotype, only a few months after its invention in Paris.
He was also committed in the promotion of his own image through a brief but interesting scientific production - which was not new for arts merchants in the 18th century - and published some volumes and several papers. One of these papers, published for the first time in Naples in 1825, the “Collection of the most interesting Monuments of the Bourbonic Museum and various private collections”, was actually an efficient means of promotion of his own societies which went far beyond what the title anticipated. The book was in fact sold for decades not only in his own shops, but also at the Royal Museum, thus representing a smart marketing operation. Half of the objects in the tables were in fact, besides being part of private collections, sold by the Gargiulo Enterprise. This way Gargiulo promoted in press that his objects had been sold and distributed among the most famous private and public collectors in the Continent: the Duke of Blacas, Chevalier Durand, and Millingen at the Royal Museum of Berlin.
He probably died after 1864, date of the edition of his non-posthumous “Historical and descriptive notes on the building of the National Museum with Guide” and probably even later than 1876, when he still appeared as Associate Correspondent from Naples for the Institute of Archaeological Correspondence.
Although the first phases of Gargiulo’s activity as a collector are unknown, it seems likely that his collection had already been assembled in 1822, the year of the edition of another of his volumes, the “Collection of drawings of the so-far known different shapes of the italic-greek vases, commonly referred to as Etruscan”. The collection was nevertheless already famous in 1829 when, together with other private collections, it began to be visited by the major scholars of the time, like Panofka who, in a paper of that same period, mentions the “collection of Mr. Gargiulo, De Crescenzo and Pacileo”.
In 1847 Gerhard and Panofka again visited Gargiulo’s terracottas collection - which he was already willing to sell - at his own house in Vico Santa Maria della Purità 23, Materdei, Naples, and they compared it to the one which was considered the most important collection at that time, that of the Marquis Campana in Rome:
“Even after having seen Mr. Campana’s incomparable collection of terracottas in Rome, one cannot but be impressed by the excellent collection of the same kind which the most famous collector, antique dealer of ancient ceramic vases Mr. Gargiulo, has collected with great sacrifice of time, effort and money, and discerningly stored in his apartment...”.
April 8th 1843 is the date of the first purchase of objects belonging to Gargiulo concluded by the Royal Bourbonic Museum. They were “eleven excellent column shafts made of many types of marble, with the corresponding bases”, which were bought for 490 ducats. Strong with this past economic transaction, the following year Gargiulo asks for the permission to export out of the Reign, to Rome, “21 italic-greek vases, and twenty-one bronze objects”, under the pseudonym of Giuseppe Aurelio di Gennaro, most likely in order not to have troubles connected to his double role of arts merchant on one hand, and of employee of the Bourbonic Royal Museum on the other.
Of the entire negotiation nothing more is known for several years: neither if the objects were actually exported to Rome by Gargiulo, nor if they were instead purchased and absorbed by the Royal Museum.
The material being from a private collection, it cannot be associated to any particular offering set or tomb, and therefore has no stratigraphic or chronological reference; for this reason it is not possible to gain a unique picture from it, but only a few data.
Small figures are undoubtedly the best represented class of material, building up as much as about three fourths of the entire terracottas collection. The percentage data about pottery (59 specimens) and, most of all, about large figures (46), which are not always common in 19th century collections, are the most relevant.
