A música popular tem sido o foco de pesquisas acadêmicas realizadas por estudiosos como Adalberto Paranhos e Marcos Napolitano, abrindo um novo campo na pesquisa historiográfica. Napolitano propõe que examinemos o material musical como um elemento a partir do qual podemos depreender uma pluralidade de memórias e projetos culturais conflituosos entre si (NAPOLITANO, 2002). Nesse sentido, deve-se buscar compreender como articulam-se “as tradições, identidades e ideologias que a definem, para além das implicações estéticas mais abstratas, como um objeto sociocultural complexo e multifacetado” (NAPOLITANO, 2002, p. 77). Assim, conforme Napolitano, para o estudo desse objeto é fundamental levar em conta a dupla articulação musical e verbal da canção, buscando mapear os sentidos nela embutidos, assim como suas formas de inserção na sociedade e na história. É a partir desse campo que pretende-se, neste artigo, analisar o xaxado difundido pelo Grupo de Xaxado Cabras de Lampião, de Serra Talhada, Pernambuco.
O trabalho desenvolvido pelo Grupo foi escolhido por conta da tônica dada a ideia de “autencidade e originalidade” do seu xaxado, o que remete o discurso à problemática da memória e das relações entre o tradicional/popular e o moderno. O Grupo realizou, em 2010, com o patrocínio do Programa BNB de Cultura, criado pelo Banco do Nordeste em 2005, um documentário denominado Xaxado – A dança de cabra macho. Nele, tem-se inicialmente uma breve história sobre o xaxado, passando-se para a apresentação do Grupo, a qual é entrecortada por entrevistas com testemunhas do cangaço. Segundo os realizadores do documentário, a intenção não é confrontar folcloristas e historiadores, e sim transmitir aquilo que aprenderam com familiares e amigos, testemunhas do cangaço. O xaxado apresentado pelo Grupo - as letras e a performance - evoca uma determinada memória sobre o cangaço. O espetáculo produzido pelo Grupo pode então ser lido como uma forma de manifestação cultural que procura tecer uma determinada narrativa sobre o cangaço e assim construir uma representação e uma memória sobre o fenômeno, capazes de aglutinar os indivíduos, demarcando posicionamentos diante de dilemas do tempo presente.
A produção e reprodução desse bem cultural encontram-se também imersos num complexo contexto que se configura na relação entre a modernidade e o tradicional colocando-nos várias outras questões nessa análise. Uma destas refere-se ao estudo dos bens culturais que se inserem no mundo contemporâneo caracterizado pela heterogeneidade, mobilidade e pela desterritorialização e marcado pelo que Néstor Canclini (2006) chama de “culturas híbridas”. Segundo este autor, a noção de hibridação remete aos: “(...) processos socioculturais nos quais estruturas ou práticas discretas, que existiam de forma separada, se combinam para gerar novas estruturas, objetos e práticas”(CANCLINI, 2006, p. XIX). Entretanto, este movimento de hibridação não deve ser apenas visto pelo viés “celebrativo” em que as culturas se misturam de forma pacífica. Há conflitos e contradições nos processos de hibridação, que são permeados pelas assimetrias do poder, pelas desigualdades sociais, pela dinâmica do mercado, entre outros processos. Assim, pensar o xaxado, anunciado pelo Grupo como uma produção cultural “popular” e “tradicional”, deve trazer também uma reflexão acerca das possibilidades, dos limites, dos diferentes sentidos e das relações contidas nesses termos que o caracterizam.
Entendendo, então, que a música popular é uma manifestação cultural por meio da qual são construídas representações e memórias, buscaremos compreender os seguintes pontos, partindo da apresentação do Grupo: o xaxado difundido pelo Grupo estabelece qual representação sobre o cangaço, no geral, e Lampião, em particular? De que forma se constitui uma determinada memória, a partir desses significados sociais atribuídos ao cangaço e a Lampião pelo Grupo? E por fim: De que maneira o Grupo agencia essas representações e memória para a sua atuação no tempo presente?
O Grupo de xaxado Cabras de Lampião
Um ponto a se discutir nesta análise refere-se à caracterização do xaxado produzido pelo Grupo como um elemento da “cultura popular”, sendo caracterizado como “autêntico/ original” e “tradicional”. Em diversos momentos nas falas dos idealizadores e integrantes do Grupo esses termos aparecem de modo a legitimar sua existência e sua ação no tempo presente. Esse discurso pode ser lido considerando-se as dicotomias entre o moderno e o tradicional, o popular e o erudito. Essas divisões operam, segundo Canclini (2006, p. 19), a partir de um raciocínio que concebe a modernidade como uma “força alheia e dominadora que operaria por substituição do tradicional e do típico”. Todavia, torna-se mais produtivo analisá-lo a partir da demolição dessas divisões abruptas buscando entender os bens culturais e seus processos de produção e consumo inseridos no cruzamento sociocultural em que essas dicotomias se reconfiguram. Nesse sentido, o moderno e o tradicional, o culto e o popular são redimensionados. Segundo o autor, não são os bens, antes classificados nesse esquema, que se desvanecem, mas sim a pretensão de configurá-los em universos culturais autossuficientes. Trata-se de se ver como, dentro da crise do projeto da modernidade ocidental, esses universos culturais transformam-se e relacionam-se (CANCLINI, 2006).
Canclini então nos traz alguns argumentos que buscam construir uma nova percepção do tradicional-popular, levando em consideração suas interações com a cultura de elite e a indústria cultural. Para ele deve-se considerar que a expansão modernizadora não solapou as culturas tradicionais. Isso ocorreu devido a alguns fatores, dentre eles, a necessidade do mercado de abarcar as estruturas e bens simbólicos tradicionais para alcançar as camadas da população menos integradas à modernidade; o interesse dos Estados nesse campo, fomentando sua produção por diversos interesses – geração de empregos, atração de turismo, solidificação da unidade nacional – e a própria continuidade da produção cultural por agentes sociais interessados em manter sua herança cultural – sem a qual nenhum desses usos do popular-tradicional, tanto do mercado quanto do Estado, seriam possíveis (CANCLINI, 2006).
A noção de tradição nesse contexto se vê também colocada em perspectiva. Para Gérard Lenclud (1987), tradição é uma visão que os homens constroem sobre o seu passado a partir de critérios do presente. Todavia, esse processo não se dá como uma invenção livre do passado. Há limites dentro dos quais essas interpretações se constituem. Nesse exercício, a questão da “verdade” não se mede pela “exatidão” desta reconstituição histórica. Segundo o autor, a eficácia da tradição se encontra menos na correspondência com o que “de fato” aconteceu, do que na enunciação de proposições tidas, previamente, como consensualmente verdadeiras. Como uma elaboração feita pelos homens no presente, a tradição mostra sua funcionalidade ao fornecer àqueles que a enunciam um meio de afirmar sua diferença e assentar sua autoridade. Dessa forma, cada grupo social elabora sua tradição, buscando no passado os elementos que lhe convém. Nesse sentido, a questão da autenticidade da tradição se dá menos pela conservação do conteúdo desta, tal qual foi criada, do que pela autoridade social dos agentes que receberam – ou que se atribuíram – a missão de preservá-la. ( LENCLUD, 1987)
Para o Grupo, o cangaço representa a luta e a resistência das classes subalternas, tanto no passado quanto no presente, no qual se observa, segundo eles, uma continuidade histórica das injustiças sociais. Nesse quadro, a cultura popular e as tradições se inscrevem como “legado” cultural de um grupo subalterno – ao qual os integrantes se identificam – que passa a servir como meio de estabelecer um posicionamento social no contexto do presente. A cultura popular tradicional do cangaço é então utilizada pelo Grupo como instrumento para a construção de uma memória e de um patrimônio cultural que faça frente àqueles instituídos pelos grupos hegemônicos, dando visibilidade e legitimidade às suas reivindicações no âmbito político e social. Conforme um dos integrantes do Grupo, Karl Marx (2008), em entrevista concedida ao jornal “A Nova Democracia”, discutir hoje o cangaço, significa denunciar “que as feridas sociais que geraram as revoltas sociais no final do Século XIX são as mesmas que ainda hoje, em pleno Século XXI continuam ardendo(...) Debater o cangaço é discutir nossa identidade cultural”.
Interessante destacar também como a noção de cultura popular tradicional do entrevistado interage com um universo cultural, que atravessa o “local”, difundido pelos meios de comunicação de massa e pela indústria cultural (MARX, 2008):
Considero fundamental o papel da cultura popular para fortalecer o conhecimento da história e a transformação da sociedade. O nosso trabalho é fazer uma análise crítica do presente tendo o passado como referência, além de trabalhar com a identidade cultural como barreira de defesa contra o imediatismo que o imperialismo utiliza para impor uma "cultura" de vulgaridades. É contra essa falsa cultura de modismos que lutamos. É também contra a apresentação do sertanejo de forma caricatural e deformada, como vemos nesses meios de comunicação que fazem o jogo do imperialismo.
Entretanto, os meios de comunicação de massa e não tradicionais, possíveis pelos novos recursos tecnológicos – como internet, vídeos, CDs – não são apenas confrontados pelo Grupo. Este também se apropria dessas novas linguagens e tecnologias de reprodução para a difusão de seu discurso. Isso nos lembra mais uma vez Canclini (2006, p. 307) para quem os novos recursos tecnológicos não são neutros, eles implicam mudanças culturais, entretanto, o significado final depende dos usos que os diversos agentes sociais lhes atribuem. Assim, segundo a reportagem a qual estamos nos reportando, a Fundação Cultural Cabras de Lampião, a qual o Grupo está vinculado, produz diversos eventos culturais, como festivais de xaxado e mostras de teatro, entre outras ações, e seu trabalho resultou em vários documentários e especiais para a TV, sendo até divulgado por uma rede nacional hegemônica. Eles utilizam também um blog para o fornecimento de informações acerca do universo cultural do cangaço. Ainda destaca-se o uso de DVDs e CDs para a difusão da memória do cangaço. Dessa forma, o uso dessas ferramentas, ao invés de apenas contradizer as culturas populares tradicionais, pode servir para expandir a criatividade e o uso dos bens culturais. Conforme argumenta Canclini (2006, p. 308) a “remodelação tecnológica das práticas sociais nem sempre contradiz as culturas tradicionais (...) Essa apropriação múltipla de patrimônios culturais abre possibilidades originais de experimentação e comunicação, com usos democratizadores”. Dessa forma, o Grupo se apropria dos meios de comunicação modernos para elaborar posições próprias.
Destacamos também as relações que se estabelecem entre a produção cultural da Fundação Cultural Cabras de Lampião e as políticas públicas de fomento à cultura e à memória. De acordo com a reportagem, a Fundação foi contemplada em 2007 com o “Prêmio Culturas Populares — Maestro Duda 100 Anos de Frevo”, pelo Ministério da Cultura . Em 2008 tornou-se um Ponto de Cultura e em 2012 foi também contemplada com um Ponto de Memória. Além dessas relações estabelecidas com o Estado para a captação de recursos e apoio para a garantia da continuidade de sua existência e de sua produção cultural, o envolvimento e interação dos membros ligados ao Grupo no âmbito político institucional se dá também por outras vias. No dia 28 de dezembro de 2012 foi publicado no blog do Ponto de Cultura uma notícia acerca da nomeação dos Secretários do município de Serra Talhada pelo prefeito Luciano Duque. Dentre os nomeados está Anildomá de Souza, um dos fundadores do Grupo.
Assim, percebemos que nos intercâmbios entre a cultura popular tradicional, as indústrias culturais, os meios de comunicação de massa, e a estrutura política do Estado vão se estruturando questões acerca das identidades, da defesa de interesses e reivindicação de direitos, dos conflitos entre os diferentes grupos sociais em disputa pelo poder local, entre outros. A apropriação dos meios comunicação de massa e das novas tecnologias, e as estratégias de relação com o Estado nos mostram que as concepções polares entre as diferentes “tipologias” culturais – como se estas operassem de maneira autônoma e excludente – não conseguem mais dar conta da complexidade da cultura e das condições de produção e difusão dos bens simbólicos no mundo contemporâneo. Esse caráter multifacetado do campo cultural, segundo Canclini (2006), nos faz repensar os nexos que se estabelecem entre a cultura e o poder. Para o autor (CANCLINI, 2006, p. 349): “A busca de mediações, de vias diagonais para gerir conflitos, dá às relações culturais um lugar proeminente no desenvolvimento político”. Assim, ante a impossibilidade da ação direta na ordem política e social estabelecida, reconstrói-se a mesma através do uso dos bens simbólicos, podendo deles irromper práticas sociais transformadoras (CANCLINI, 2006).
A partir dessa análise trazida por Canclini (2006), podemos entender essa reencenação do xaxado feita pelo Grupo como uma dramatização de seus conflitos e dilemas atuais, informados por uma determinada memória do cangaço, que é construída e reelaborada pelo repertório musical selecionado para compor suas apresentações.
Cabe aqui destacar ainda algumas considerações que Catroga (2001) faz acerca da memória, sua função social e os ritos de recordação. Para este estudioso, deve-se considerar que a memória não se reduz à esfera individual, ela sempre recebe, segundo ele, uma “sobredeterminação social” (CATROGA, 2001, p. 44). A memória se dá então numa linguagem pública, coletiva e instituinte do rito, integrando o eu por meio de práticas simbólicas e comunicativas. A finalidade última das “liturgias de recordação”, para Catroga (2001, p. 51), é a de “criar e perpetuar o sentimento de pertença e de continuidade, num protesto, de fundo metafísico” contra a fruição do tempo. A memória é ativa e capaz de integrar passado, presente e futuro. Daí que podemos entender a construção de uma memória do cangaço pelo Grupo como uma maneira de filiar-se a um passado, à história de um determinado grupo social, que dê sustentação a sua atuação social, cultural e política no presente, na perspectiva de abrir um futuro diferente.
O Xaxado no espetáculo dos Cabras de Lampião
O documentário produzido pelo Grupo começa tratando sobre a origem da palavra “xaxado”. Segue-se então para a apresentação do espetáculo que é entrecortado por entrevistas com pessoas que vivenciaram o período do cangaço. Iniciam-se as músicas e a dança. Neste estudo serão analisadas três músicas, uma do “cancioneiro popular” do cangaço, uma de Luiz Gonzaga e outra de Zé Ramalho.
O espetáculo, que ocorre em um teatro, é aberto com o hino de Pernambuco adaptado ao som do xaxado. Os dançarinos, distribuídos em cinco homens e cinco mulheres, estão com as vestimentas, na cor azul, típicas dos cangaceiros, bastante ornamentados, com bordados coloridos, bornais e joias, além de perneiras salpicadas de ilhoses e chapéu de couro em meia-lua, para os homens. Esses elementos descritos são importantes no sentido de que juntos compõem a performance do Grupo. Segundo Napolitano (2002), a performance é responsável pela existência objetiva da obra. É entre as duas instâncias que compõem a canção popular – a música propriamente dita e a performance – que esta é socialmente realizada.
O espetáculo continua. São, então, proferidos os seguintes versos: Era um tempo maldito e deletério/ De República em pleno feudalismo/ O Brasil já no presidencialismo/ Se regendo por normas do Império/ Quem queria fazer o Brasil sério/ Não podia assistir acomodado/ O futuro enganchado no passado/ O presente perdido sem futuro/ O papel da ternura era tão duro/ Que o amor precisava andar armado. Esses versos de abertura localizam historicamente o interlocutor e nos deixa entrever a interpretação que o Grupo tem do contexto no qual surgiu o cangaço, a qual remete às explicações de Rui Facó (1983), no seu livro Cangaceiros e Fanáticos, sobre o fenômeno. Percebemos que se desenha uma imagem de contradição entre as estruturas políticas “modernas” que se estabeleciam no final do século XIX e início do XX – República e presidencialismo – e a permanência de certos elementos “arcaicos” – “feudalismo” e “normas do Império”.
Logo em seguida são executadas músicas– ao som da zabumba e da sanfona, que marcam o ritmo acelerado de xaxado – as quais são conhecidas como parte do repertório tradicional do gênero. Destacamos aqui a seguinte canção: Lampião tava dormindo/ Acordou muito assustado/ Deu tiro na graúna/ Pensando que era soldado. Essa estrofe faz parte da música Sabino e Lampião, gravada pelo cangaceiro Volta-Seca, em 1957. Essa música referia-se a brincadeiras que Sabino fazia com Lampião, “duvidando” de sua valentia. Segundo Carlos Dória (1981), de acordo com relatos de sobreviventes, em seu cotidiano, os cangaceiros eram brincalhões e divertidos. Essa estrofe revela essa dinâmica dentro de um bando. Além disso, há também, na música, referência a “personagens” presentes na vida desses bandos: a graúna, ave de plumagem negra, diz sobre o ambiente natural no qual os bandos viviam. Enveredar-se pela caatinga era uma importante estratégia de fuga das perseguições dos soldados das volantes.
Em seguida, em meio aos gritos dos “cangaceiros” e enquanto estes formam duas filas, cada uma encabeçada por Lampião e Maria Bonita, é apresentada a música Olha Pisada, de Luiz Gonzaga, originalmente gravada em 1954, com algumas alterações em relação à letra e à melodia original, referindo-se ao xaxado e aos “cabras de Lampião”: Assim era que cantava/ Os cabras de Lampião/ Cantando e xaxando/ Nos forrós do sertão/ Entrando numa cidade/ Ao sair dum povoado/ Cantando a rendeira/Se danavam no xaxado/Eu que me criei na pisada/ Vendo os cangaceiros na pisada/Danço com sucesso na pisada/De Lampião/ Olha a pisada/ Tum, tum, tum!Olha a pisada/ Tum, tum, tum, tum!/ Olha a pisada/ Tum, tum, tum!/Olha a pisada/ De Lampião!
É importante destacar aqui a escolha emblemática de uma música de Luiz Gonzaga para fazer parte do repertório do espetáculo. Segundo Albuquerque (1999), Luiz Gonzaga a partir da década de 40 tornou-se o símbolo da música nordestina e da identidade regional, ao criar e difundir o “baião”. Esse gênero, de acordo com o autor, instituiu-se como a “música do Nordeste”, falando e cantando em nome dessa região e dando visibilidade também para seus problemas, tradições e povo. Ainda de acordo com o autor, não só o ritmo criou essa “escuta do Nordeste”, mas também as letras, a voz, a vestimenta, as expressões locais, os elementos culturais e populares, enfim, toda a performance de Luiz Gonzaga.
Como bem observa Valeska Gama (2012) , a música de Gonzaga, que representava um Nordeste tradicional e identificava-se ao regional e ao popular, contrário à modernização e à urbanização, é, entretanto, uma invenção urbana e moderna. O baião, elaborado por Gonzaga, constituiu-se de uma “técnica” dos cantadores de desafio – que dedilhavam a viola ou faziam uma marcação rítmica no bojo desta entre um verso e outro – conhecida também como “baiano”, mesclada com elementos do samba carioca e outros ritmos urbanos com os quais Gonzaga teve contato durante sua trajetória artística (ALBUQUERQUE, 1999). Além disso, a relação com o moderno estava também no seu meio de divulgação, o rádio, que permitia o alcance de um grande público. O Grupo, então, ao executar uma música de Gonzaga traz com ela uma carga intensa de representações e memórias que remetem à identidade nordestina, rural, sertaneja e, no caso da música analisada, cangaceira também. Além disso, nos faz refletir sobre o lugar do que se entende por “popular tradicional”, pois eles se apropriam e interpretam um produto cultural que já nasceu nas conexões e contradições entre o mundo “moderno” e o “tradicional”.
Segue-se apresentação com a música Cavalo do cão, de Zé Ramalho, a qual começa em clima de tensão, no qual predominam as notas graves. Dispostos em duas fileiras, a de mulheres encabeçadas por Maria Bonita e a de homens por Lampião, a música inicia-se ao som de gritos vigorosos dos “cangaceiros”. Também vigorosos são os passos dos dançarinos que marcam o compasso da música e “conversam” com esta, alternando sua intensidade de acordo com os pontos de tensão dela. A primeira estrofe então é cantada e desenha a seguinte imagem: Corriam os anos trinta/ No nordeste brasileiro/Algumas sociedades lutavam pelo dinheiro/ Que vendiam pelas terras/ Coronéis em pé-de-guerra/ Beatos e cangaceiros. Esse quadro remete novamente à obra de Rui Facó (1983), na qual em sua análise histórica sobre os movimentos messiânicos e o cangaço estes são explicados como reações “primitivas” ao contexto histórico marcado pela decadência do modelo de produção econômico baseado na escravatura e no latifúndio e a consequente perda de domínio econômico e político das oligarquias locais.
Segue-se o refrão: E correr da volante/ No meio da noite, no meio da caatinga/Que quer me pegar. Temos aqui representada a constante luta dos cangaceiros com a “ordem estabelecida”, simbolizada pelas volantes. Segundo Pericás (2010), um dos aspectos que contribuíam para uma recordação positiva dos cangaceiros era sua contraposição às volantes, que apesar de serem representantes da “ordem oficial e instituída” praticavam diversos crimes contra a população sertaneja. Esta acabava voltando-se para os cangaceiros, vendo-os – ainda que por uma visão romantizada, pois os cangaceiros também praticavam agressões contra essa população – como aqueles que lutavam contra essa “ordem”. Apesar dessa oposição sempre reforçada entre cangaceiros e volantes, é importante ressaltar que não havia entre eles uma diferenciação tão grande, chegando ao ponto de suas indumentárias parecerem. Além disso, as motivações para entrada em um dos dois grupos não eram tão dispares, ocorrendo de cangaceiros tornarem-se volantes e volantes ingressarem no cangaço (PERICÁS, 2010).
A música segue com os seguintes dizeres: Na memória da vingança/Um desejo de menino/Um cavaleiro do diabo/Corre atrás do seu destino/ Condenado em sua terra/ Coronéis em pé-de-guerra/Beatos e cangaceiros. Aqui se destaca mais uma referência a estudos historiográficos acerca do cangaço: a estrofe dialoga com o conceito do “escudo ético” proposta por Frederico Pernambucano de Melo (1974, p. 67), segundo o qual “fazer-se cangaceiro significava responder a uma afronta sofrida, passando o ofendido a desenvolver toda a sua ação na busca de uma vingança capaz de reintegrar-lhe o rígido quadro de honra.”
De acordo com Pericás (2010), esse elemento ético diferenciava os cangaceiros dos bandidos “comuns”, aos olhos da população, criando certo respeito ou empatia por aqueles. O refrão é novamente cantado e a música continua apenas como um fundo instrumental servindo de base para mais um momento de destaque das personagens de Lampião e Maria Bonita. Desta vez Lampião traz o seu facão, executando passos com a sua arma, enquanto Maria Bonita o acompanha, desarmada. Pode-se fazer uma interessante observação acerca da representação da mulher no cangaço. Segundo Dória (1981), as mulheres não possuíam armas para combate, elas não eram “guerrilheiras”. Suas armas serviam apenas para defesa, sendo armas curtas. Em geral, essas mulheres eram protegidas pelos homens de quem eram companheiras. A música, então, é inteiramente repetida e assim finalizada.
Após o encerramento do espetáculo, a história de Virgolino Ferreira é contada por Anildomá de Souza. Segundo ele, Virgolino teria tido uma infância e juventude como a de todo sertanejo, na lida com a terra e com o gado. Até que em 1920 seu pai foi assassinado por conta de uma querela de sua família com a família Alves de Barros, sua vizinha. Após esse evento, Lampião procurou o bando de cangaceiros de Sinhô Pereira. Este, em 1922, abandonou o cangaço deixando Lampião na chefia do bando, o qual percorreu sete estados do Nordeste, invadindo vilas, fazendas e cidades, e desafiando coronéis, governos e polícia. Anildomá então enfatiza que a representação de Lampião como bandido sanguinário que cometeu várias atrocidades já foi bastante explorada por diversos biógrafos desse personagem. O que ele e o Grupo propõem, através do documentário, é dar visibilidade ao “Lampião artista”, compositor, músico, poeta e artesão. Segundo o narrador, essa faceta de Lampião deve também ser conhecida para melhor se compreender o que foi o cangaço e quem foi o Comandante das Caatingas.
Retomando a questão do xaxado, Anildomá afirma que o xaxado surgiu como forma de diversão nos intervalos entre os combates. O xaxado, segundo Anilldomá, é hoje Patrimônio Cultural Imaterial de Pernambuco. Esse reconhecimento é bastante significativo quando consideramos que o campo do patrimônio concentra as disputas em torno das representações, das memórias e das identidades. O patrimônio constitui-se em referências culturais que representam um grupo social, através das quais é definida sua identidade. Além disso, o patrimônio também apresenta o papel de mediador entre diferentes temporalidades, possuindo a capacidade de evocar o passado estabelecendo assim uma ligação entre passado, presente e futuro (GONÇALVES, 2007). Dessa forma, é também um campo em litígio, no qual a inserção ou não de um bem cultural na categoria de patrimônio canaliza disputas por poder simbólico e político. Assim, o Grupo se apropria desses bens simbólicos que representam o cangaço e Lampião atribuindo-lhes sentidos – através da composição de uma narrativa que evoca o passado e o interpreta no presente – os quais permitem que seja constituída uma identidade própria, situando-os na estrutura social e política atual.
Considerações Finais
A análise do documentário Xaxado, a dança de cabra macho permite perceber e acompanhar a elaboração de uma narrativa acerca do cangaço e de Lampião através do repertório musical escolhido e da performance realizada pelo Grupo. Essa narrativa é aberta com a localização do Grupo geográfica e culturalmente, com a execução do hino de Pernambuco adaptado ao som do xaxado. Em seguida, inicia-se a reconstituição histórica, na qual diversas temporalidades e representações são agenciadas pelo Grupo, construindo, assim, uma interpretação específica. O contexto histórico no qual surgiu o fenômeno é apresentado – final do Império, inicio da República Velha.
São executadas então músicas do cancioneiro “popular e tradicional” como forma de reafirmar a noção de “autenticidade e originalidade” do xaxado do Grupo. Isto porque tais músicas são reconhecidas como parte do repertório musical composto pelo bando de Lampião que não se perdeu no tempo. Ao referir-se ao xaxado “mais remoto”, “tradicional”, o Grupo busca preservar uma memória. O xaxado divulgado pelo Grupo, obviamente, possui uma estrutura diferente do “original”. Passos e instrumentos foram acrescentados e seu contexto é hoje de um espetáculo artístico. Nele diversas camadas de tempo dialogam e constroem um novo significado para essa manifestação cultural. Percebemos que essa produção cultural não se encontra em um âmbito do “tradicional” puro. Sua elaboração se dá hoje no cruzamento do moderno com o tradicional e na ressignificação do popular. Nesse sentido, é que se torna possível a inserção de uma versão da música de Luiz Gonzaga gravada na década de 1950 e que carrega em si outros significados para o xaxado e para Lampião e o cangaço. Esses elementos foram utilizados por Gonzaga e circularam num momento histórico em que se buscava construir e dar visibilidade a uma identidade regional nordestina, valorizando-se aquilo que representava um Nordeste sertanejo e tradicional.
Logo em seguida, passa-se para uma versão de uma música gravada na década de 1980 por Zé Ramalho, artista que traz em suas composições uma forte interação e mesmo uma “diluição” das fronteiras entre o moderno e o tradicional, o local e o transnacional. O Grupo enfatiza com a música Cavalo do cão uma representação do cangaço como um movimento que busca lutar contra as injustiças sociais presentes no sertão, infligidas pelas elites políticas. Assim, Lampião torna-se a figura de um “justiceiro”, dialogando com a noção de bandido social. Interessante notar a questão da “inevitabilidade” da entrada de Lampião para o cangaço. Apesar de ele ter sido um “homem de bem”, sertanejo comum, os caminhos de sua vida e o contexto em que vivia não lhe deixou outra escolha.
Enfim, podemos perceber que o uso do xaxado serve a propósitos muito diferentes do seu “original”: não mais como divertimento dos cangaceiros, mas como um meio de construir representações e uma memória que sejam capazes de mobilizar indivíduos para enfrentar seus dilemas presentes.
Translation - English Introduction
Popular music has been the focus of academic research developed by scholars like Adalberto Paranhos and Marcos Napolitano, opening a new field on historiographical research. Napolitano proposes that we examine the musical material as an element from which we can comprehend a plurality of memories and cultural projects conflicting amongst themselves (NAPOLITANO, 2002). In this sense, we must try to comprehend how "the traditions, identities and ideologies that define it, beyond the most abstract aesthetic implications, as a complex and versatile social cultural object" articulate (NAPOLITANO, 2002, p. 77, free translation). Therefore, according to Napolitano, for the study of this object it is fundamental to take into account the musical and verbal double articulation of the song, trying to map the meanings imbued in it, as its forms of insertion on the society and in History. It is from this field of research that is intended to analyse the xaxado spread by the Grupo de Xaxado Cabras de Lampião, from Serra Talhada, Pernambuco.
The work developed by the Group has been chosen because of the tone given to the idea of "authenticity and originality” of its xaxado, which sends the argument to the problem of memory and the relations between traditional/popular and modern. The Group has made, in 2010, with sponsorship of the Programa BNB de Cultura, created by the Banco do Nordeste in 2005, a documentary entitled: Xaxado – A dança de cabra macho (Xaxado - The tough guy's dance, free translation). In it, initially we have a brief history about xaxado, going through the Group's presentation, which is broken up by interviews with cangaço's witnesses. According to the filmmakers of the documentary, the intention is not to confront folklorists and historians, but rather to share what they have learnt with family and friends, witnesses of cangaço. The xaxado performed by the Group - the lyrics and dance - evokes a specific memory about cangaço. The produced show by the Group can then be read as a form of cultural manifestation which seeks to sew a determined narrative about cangaço and thus build a representation and a memory about the phenomenon, capable of agglutinate individuals, determining positions in face of the dilemmas of the present.
The production and reproduction of this cultural asset can also be found immersed in a complex context which configurates itself in the relation between the modern and the traditional confronting us with a set of other questions on this analysis. One of this refers to the study of the cultural assets which are inserted on the contemporary world distinguished by heterogeneity, mobility and by the deterritorialization and scarred by what Néstor Canclini (2006) calls of “hybrid cultures”. According to this author, the notion of hybridization refers to: "(...) social cultural processes in which structures or discrete practices, that existed separately, are combined to generate new structures, objects and practices”(CANCLINI, 2006, p. XIX, free translation). However, this hybridization movement must not only be seen by its "celebrative" bias in which different cultures merge in a nonviolent way. There are conflicts and contradictions in the hybridization processes, which are permeated by power asymmetries, by social inequalities, by market dynamics, among other processes. Thus, to think the xaxado, enunciated by the Group as a "popular" and "traditional" cultural production, must also bring a debate about the possibilities, the limits, of the different meanings and of the relations contained in these terms that characterize it.
Understanding, then, that popular music is a cultural manifestation by which are developed memories and representations, we intend to understand the following, from the Group's performance point of view: the xaxado diffused by the Group establishes what kind of representation on cangaço, in general, and Lampião, in particular? In which way is it constituted a specific memory, from these social meanings attributed to cangaço and to Lampião by the Group? And finally: How does the Group manage these representations and memories for its performances in the present?
Cabras de Lampião Xaxado's Group
A point to be discussed in this analysis refers to the characterization of the xaxado produced by the Group as an element of the "popular culture", as being "authentic/ original” and "traditional". In various moments on the idealizers and members of the Group speeches these terms appear as a way to legitimize their existence and their action in the present. These speeches can be read considering the dichotomies between the modern and the traditional, the popular and the erudite. These division operate, according to Canclini (2006,p. 19, free translation), from a reasoning that conceives modernity as an “alien and dominant force which would operate replacing the traditional and the usual". However, it becomes more productive to study this speech from the demolition of these sudden divisions trying to understand the cultural assets and their production and consumption processes inserted in the social cultural relation in which these dichotomies are reconfigured. In this sense, the modern and the traditional, the cultured and the popular aspects are changed. According to the author, it is not the assets, previously classified in this scheme, that wither, and yet the pretension of configuring them in self-sufficient cultural universes. It is about noticing how, inside the western modern project crisis, these cultural universes are transformed and interact. (CANCLINI, 2006).
Canclini then brings us some arguments that try to build a new perception of the popular-traditional, taking into account its interactions with the elite culture and the cultural industry. For him it must be considered that the modernizing expansion did not overcome the traditional cultures. This happened due to certain factors, among them, the necessity of the market to incorporate the structures and the traditional symbolic assets to reach the least integrated to modernity layers of society; the interest of the States in this field, promoting its production for many reasons - employment generation, enhancing tourism, solidification of a national unity - and the very own continuity of the cultural production by the social agents interested in maintaining their cultural heritage - without which none of these traditional-popular uses, so much of the market as of the State, would be possible. (CANCLINI, 2006).
The notion of tradition in this context is also put into perspective. For Gérard Lenclud (1987), tradition is a point of view that men build over their past from parameters of the present. However, this process does not occur as a free invention of the past. There are limits within which these interpretations are constituted. In this exercise, the matter of "truth" is not measured by the "preciseness" of this historical reconstitution. According to the author, the effectiveness of the tradition is found less on the correspondence with what happened "in fact", rather than the formulation of propositions understood, previously, as consensually truthful. As an elaboration made by men in the present, the tradition shows its functionality when it provides to those that enunciate it a way of stating their differences and settling their authority. In this way, each social group make their tradition, searching in the past the elements that are convenient to them. For that matter, the question of the tradition's authenticity is given less by the conservation of its content, as it was made, rather by the social authority of the agents that received - or have bestowed upon themselves - the mission to preserve it. ( LENCLUD, 1987, free translation)
For the Group, cangaço represents the struggle and the resistance of the subordinate classes, in both the past and the present, where we can observe, according to them, a historical continuity of the social injustices. In this picture, the popular culture and the traditions become a cultural "legacy" of a subordinate group – to which the members identify themselves with - that starts to serve as a way of establishing a social positioning in face of the present's context. The traditional popular culture of cangaço is used by the Group as an instrument for the construction of a memory and a cultural heritage that stands to those instituted by the hegemonic groups, giving visibility and legitimacy to their claims on the political and social spheres. According to one of the Group's member, Karl Marx (2008), on an interview conceded to the newspaper “A Nova Democracia”, to discuss cangaço today, means to denounce "that the social injuries that generated the social uprisings in the 19th century are the same that even today, in plain 21st century, still burn(...) To debate cangaço is to discuss our cultural identity" (Free translation).
It is also interesting to point out how the notion of traditional popular culture of the interviewed interacts with a cultural universe that surpasses the "local", spread by the mass media and by the cultural industry (MARX, 2008, free translation):
I consider the role of the popular culture to be fundamental to strengthen the knowledge of history and the change of the society. Our job is to make a critical analysis of the present having the past as reference, in addition to work with the cultural identity as a defence barrier against the immediacy that the imperialism uses to impose a vulgarities' "culture". It is against this false culture of trends that we fight. It is also against the presentation of the country men in a deformed and caricatured way, as we see in these Medias which play the imperialist game.
However, the non-traditional mass media, made available by the new technological resources - like the internet, videos, CDs - are not only confronted by the Group. It also takes over these new languages and reproduction technologies for the dissemination of its discourse. This once again reminds us of Canclini (2006, p. 307) for whom the new technological resources are not neutral, they imply in cultural changes, however, the final meaning depends on the uses that the different social agents give to it. Therefore, according to the article that we are referring to, the Cabras de Lampião Cultural Foundation, to whom the Group is associated, produces many cultural events, such as xaxado festivals and theatre shows, among other activities, and its work has resulted in various documentaries and TV specials, being even broadcast by a hegemonic national network. They also have a blog to provide information about the cultural universe of cangaço. Also noteworthy is the use of DVDs and CDs for the diffusion of the memory of cangaço. Thus, the use of these tools, rather than just contradicting the traditional popular cultures, can serve to expand creativity and the use of the cultural assets. As argued by Canclini (2006, p. 308, free translation) the "technological remodelling of social practices does not always contradict the traditional cultures (...) This multiple appropriation of cultural heritages opens up original possibilities for experimentation and communication, with democratising uses". Thus, the Group appropriates modern media to elaborate positions of its own.
We also highlight the relations that are established between the cultural production of the Cabras de Lampião Cultural Foundation and the public policies to promote culture and memory. According to the article, the Foundation was awarded in 2007 the “Prêmio Culturas Populares — Maestro Duda 100 Anos de Frevo” by the Ministry of Culture. In 2008 it became a Ponto de Cultura and in 2012 was also awarded with a Ponto de Memória. Apart from these relations established with the State for fundraising and for the support of the continuity of its existence and its cultural production, the involvement and interaction of the members connected to the Group on the institutional political sphere also happen by other means. On December 28, 2012, was published on the blog of the Ponto de Cultura an article regarding the nomination of the Serra Talhada District's Secretaries by the Mayor Luciano Duque. Among the nominees was Anildomá de Souza, one of the founders of the Group.
Thus, we notice that among the interchange between the traditional popular culture, the cultural industries, the mass media, and the political structure of the State start to appear questions regarding the identities, the defence of interests and the claim of rights, the conflicts between the different social groups disputing the local power, among others. The appropriation of the mass media and new technologies, and the strategies of State relationship show us that the polar conceptions between the different cultural “typologies” – as if these operate in an autonomous and excluding way – cannot handle the complexity of the culture and the conditions of production e diffusion of the symbolic assets in the contemporary world anymore. This multifaceted aspect of the cultural field, according to Canclini (2006), makes us rethink the connections that are established between culture and power. To the author (CANCLINI, 2006, p. 349, free translation): “The search for mediations, of diagonal ways to manage conflicts, gives to the cultural relations a prominent place on the political development". Thus, in face of the impossibility of direct action on the established political and social order, the same is rebuilt through the use of the symbolic assets, allowing from them transforming social practices to happen (CANCLINI, 2006).
From this analysis brought by Canclini (2006), we can understand this re-enacting of xaxado made by the Group as a role play of their conflicts and current dilemas, informed by a particular memory of the cangaço, which is built and re-elaborated by the musical repertoire selected to be part of their shows.
Here we have to point out some considerations that Catroga (2001) makes regarding memory, its social function and the recollection rites. To this scholar, one must consider that memory is not reduced to the individual sphere, it always receives, according to him, a "social over determination" (CATROGA, 2001, p. 44, free translation). Memory is hence given in a public language, collective and instituting of the rite, integrating the self through symbolic and sociable practices. The purpose of the last of the “liturgies of recollection", to Catroga (2001, p. 51, free translation), is to “create and perpetuate the feeling of belonging and continuity, on a protest, of a metaphysical ground” against the fruition of time. Memory is active and capable of integrating the past, the present and the future. It is from this that we can understand the construction of a memory of the cangaço by the Group as a way to be part of a past, to the history of a specific social group, that gives support to its social, cultural and political acting in the present, with the perspective of unveiling a different future.
The Xaxado in the Cabras de Lampião spectacle.
The documentary made by the Group begins discussing the origin of the word “xaxado”. It is then followed by the presentation of the spectacle which is punctuated by interviews with people that lived the period of the cangaço. The songs and dances begin. Three songs are going to be analysed in this study, one from the “popular songs” of the cangaço, one from Luiz Gonzaga and another from Zé Ramalho.
The spectacle, which happens at a theatre, is opened with the State of Pernambuco’s anthem adapted to the rhythm of xaxado. The dancers, five men and five women, are wearing, in blue, typical cangaço's outfit, very ornamented, with colourful embroideries, sacks and jewels, in addition to leggings speckled with eyelets and half moon leather hats, for men. These described elements are important in the sense that together they compose the performance of the Group. According to Napolitano (2002), the performance is responsible for the objective existence of the artwork. It is between these two instances that compose the popular song - the music and the performance – that this is socially fulfilled.
The spectacle continues. It is, then, uttered the following verses (free translation): Era um tempo maldito e deletério/ De República em pleno feudalismo/ O Brasil já no presidencialismo/ Se regendo por normas do Império/ Quem queria fazer o Brasil sério/ Não podia assistir acomodado/ O futuro enganchado no passado/ O presente perdido sem futuro/ O papel da ternura era tão duro/ Que o amor precisava andar armado. (It was a damned and deleterium age/ Of Republic in broad feudalism/ Brazil already in presidentialism/ Ruling itself by the Imperial rules/ Those who wanted to make Brazil serious/ Could not comfortably watch/ The future stuck in the past/ The present lost without a future/ The roll of kindness was so harsh/ That love needed to be armed.) These opening verses historically identify the listener and let us foresee the interpretation that the Group has of the context that cangaço emerged, which alludes to Rui Facó (1983) explanations, on his book "Cangaceiros e Fanáticos", about the phenomenon. We notice that is portrayed a picture of contradiction between the "modern" political structures that were being established in the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th - Republic and presidentialism - and the continuity of certain "archaic" elements - "feudalism" and “Imperial rules".
Soon after, songs are played - to the sound of the zabumba and the accordion that mark the accelerated rhythm of xaxado – which are known as a part of the traditional repertoire of the genre. We here mention the following song (free translation): Lampião tava dormindo/ Acordou muito assustado/ Deu tiro na graúna/ Pensando que era soldado. (Lampião was sleeping/ Awoke really scared/ Shot down the "graúna"/ Having thought it was a soldier) This stanza is part of the song Sabino e Lampião (Sabino and Lampião), recorded by the cangaceiro (cangaço's bandit) Volta-Seca, in 1957. This song referred to the pranks that Sabino used to play on Lampião, "doubting" his bravery. According to Carlos Dória (1981), from the survivors' reports, in their daily life, the cangaceiros were playful and funny. This stanza reveals this dynamic within a gang. Furthermore, there is also, in the song, the reference to "characters" that were present in the life of these gangs: the graúna, a black feathered bird, tells us about the natural environment that the gangs lived in. Going through the caatinga was an important escape strategy from the patrolling soldiers' pursuits.
After that, amidst the cries of the cangaceiros and while they form two lines, each lead by Lampião and Maria Bonita, is played the song Olha Pisada (Look at the dance step - free translation), from Luiz Gonzaga, originally recorded in 1954, with some changes to its original lyrics and melody, referring to xaxado and to the cabras de Lampião Group (free translation): Assim era que cantava/ Os cabras de Lampião/ Cantando e xaxando/ Nos forrós do sertão/ Entrando numa cidade/ Ao sair dum povoado/ Cantando a rendeira/ Se danavam no xaxado/ Eu que me criei na pisada/ Vendo os cangaceiros na pisada/ Danço com sucesso na pisada/ De Lampião/ Olha a pisada/ Tum, tum, tum! Olha a pisada/ Tum, tum, tum, tum!/ Olha a pisada/ Tum, tum, tum!/ Olha a pisada/ De Lampião! It is important to point out here the emblematic choice of a song from Luiz Gonzaga to make part of the repertoire of the spectacle. According to Albuquerque (1999), as of the 1940s, Luiz Gonzaga became the symbol of the north-eastern music and of the regional identity, for creating and spreading the baião. This genre, according to the author, has become the “music of the northeast”, speaking and singing in the name of this region and giving visibility to its problems, traditions and people as well. Still according to the author, not only the rhythm has created this "listening to the Northeast”, but also the lyrics, the voice, the clothing, the local expressions, the popular and cultural elements, in short, all of Luiz Gonzaga's performance.
As Valeska Gama (2012) well observes, Gonzaga's music, which represents a traditional Northeast and was identified with the regional and the popular, contrary to the modernization and urbanization, is, however, a modern and urban invention. The baião, elaborated by Gonzaga, was made from a "technique" of the challenge singers – who played the strings of the "viola" (a type of acoustic guitar) or made a rhythmic beating on the soundboard of the instrument between each verse – known also as baiano, mixed with elements from samba carioca and other urban rhythms that Gozaga had had contact during his artistic trajectory (ALBUQUERQUE, 1999). Moreover, the relation with the modern was also in its mean of dissemination, the radio, which allowed for the reach of a great audience. The Group, then, in executing a song from Gonzaga brings with it an intense load of representations and memories which refer to the north-eastern identity, rural, country and, in the case of the analysed song, cangaceira as well. Furthermore, it makes us think about the place that is understood as "traditional popular”, for they appropriate and interpret a cultural product which had already been born amidst the connections and contradictions between the "modern" and "traditional" worlds.
The presentation goes on with the song Cavalo do cão, (Devil's horse) from Zé Ramalho, which starts on a strained mood in which the low tones prevail. Arranged in two lines, the women's lead by Maria Bonita and the men's lead by Lampião, the song starts to the sound of vigorous shouts from the cangaceiros. Also vigorous are the steps of the dancers which mark the beat of the song and “talk” with this, altering their intensity accordingly with the song's stressed parts. The first stanza then is sang and it draws the following image (free translation): Corriam os anos trinta/ No nordeste brasileiro/ Algumas sociedades lutavam pelo dinheiro/ Que vendiam pelas terras/ Coronéis em pé-de-guerra/ Beatos e cangaceiros (The 30s went by/ At the Brazilian Northeast/ Some societies struggled for money/ Which sold through the lands/ Colonels at war/ Pios men and "cagaceiros"). This picture sends us again to the work of Rui Facó (1983), on which in his historical analysis about the messianic movements and the cangaço these are explained as "primitive" reactions to the historic context marked by the decay of the production model based on slavery and latifundium and the consequent loss of economic and political domain of the local oligarchies.
It is followed by the chorus (free translation): E correr da volante/ No meio da noite, no meio da caatinga/Que quer me pegar (And run away from the patrol/ In the middle of the night, across the caatinga/ Who wants to catch me). We have represented here the constant struggle of the cangaceiros against the "established order" symbolized by the patrols. According to Pericás (2010), one of the aspects that contributed to a positive remembrance of the cangaceiros was their opposition to the patrols, which, although being agents of the “instituted official order”, committed many crimes against the hinterland population. They eventually turned to the cangaceiros, seeing them – even though through a romantic point of view, for the cangaceiros also committed aggressions against the population – as those who fought against this “order”. Despite this opposition, always reinforced, between cangaceiros and patrols, it is important to emphasize that there was not a great difference between them, even their garments looked alike. Moreover, the motivations for entering in one of the groups were not that different, even occurring of some cangaceiros becoming patrol soldiers and patrol soldiers becoming cangaceiros (PERICÁS, 2010).
The song continues with the following verses (free translation): Na memória da vingança/Um desejo de menino/Um cavaleiro do diabo/Corre atrás do seu destino/ Condenado em sua terra/ Coronéis em pé-de-guerra/Beatos e cangaceiros. (In the memory of revenge/ A boys' desire/ A devil's knight/ Chases his destiny/ Condemned on his land/ Colonels at war/ Pious men and cangaceiros). Here is emphasised another reference to historiographical studies about cangaço: the stanza engages in a dialogue with the concept of "ethical shield" proposed by Frederico Pernambucano de Melo (1974, p. 67, free translation), who claims that: “to make oneself cangaceiro used to mean answering to a suffered affront, the offended would then undertake all his actions in search of a vengeance capable of reinstate him on the rigid honour roll.”
According to Pericás (2010), this ethical element distinguished the cangaceiros from the "average" outlaws, to the eyes of the population, creating a certain respect or empathy for those. The chorus is sung again and the music continues just as an instrumental background for another moment featuring the characters of Lampião and Maria Bonita. This time Lampião brings his machete, taking steps holding his rifle, while Maria Bonita follows him, unarmed. We can make an interesting remark about the representation of women in cangaço. According to Dória (1981), women did not have weapons for combat, they were not “guerrilla fighters". Their weapons only served for defence, being small calibre firearms. In general, these women were protected by the men with whom they had a relationship. The song is, then, entirely replayed and thus it is ended.
After the conclusion of the spectacle, the history of Virgolino Ferreira (Lampião) is told by Anildomá de Souza. According to him, Virgolino would have had a childhood and early youth like every other country man, working with the land and cattle. Until, in 1920, his father was murdered in account of a dispute of his family with the Alves de Barros family, their neighbour. After this event, Lampião searched for the cangaceiros of Sinhô Pereira’s gang. This, in 1922, left the cangaço leaving Lampião as the boss of the gang, who went through seven states of the Northeast region, raiding villages, farms and cities, and challenging colonels, governments and police. Anildomá then emphasises that the representation of Lampião as a bloodthirsty bandit who committed several atrocities has been thoroughly explored by many biographers of this character. What he and the Group propose, through the documentary, is to give visibility to the “artist Lampião”, composer, musician, poet, and craftsman. According to the narrator, this Lampião's feature must also be known to better understand what the cangaço was and who was the Caatinga Comander.
Returning to the question of the xaxado, Anildomá states that xaxado began as a way of having fun during the breaks between the battles. Xaxado, according to Anildomá, is today an Immaterial Cultural Heritage of Pernambuco. This acknowledgement is very meaningful when we consider that the field of heritage concentrate the disputes around the representations, the memories and the identities. Heritage constitutes itself in cultural references that represent a social group, through which are defined their identity. Furthermore, heritage also performs the roll of a mediator between different periods of time, having the capacity to summon the past establishing thus a connection between past, present and future. (GONÇALVES, 2007). Therefore, it is also a field in constant dispute, where the insertion or not of a cultural asset on the heritage category channels disputes for symbolic and political power. Thus, the Group appropriates these symbolic assets which represent the cangaço and Lampião giving them meanings – from the constitution of a narrative that evokes the past and interpret it in the present - that allow to be constituted its own identity, making them part of the current social and political structure.
Final Considerations
The analysis of the documentary Xaxado, the tough guy's dance allows us to realize and follow the elaboration of a narrative about cangaço and of Lampião through the chosen musical repertoire and the performance made by the Group. This narrative is opened with the Group's geographical and cultural placement, with the execution of the Pernambuco anthem adapted to the rhythm of xaxado. Afterwards, begins the historical reconstitution, in which several temporalities and representations are managed by the Group, creating, thus, a specific interpretation. The historical context in which the phenomenon has appeared is presented – the end of the Empire, the beginning of the Old Republic.
Then, songs from the "popular and traditional" classics are played as a way to restate the notion of “authenticity and originality" of the xaxado of the Group. This is because given songs are recognized as a part of the musical repertoire composed by the Lampião gang which has not been lost in time. In referring to the “most remote”, “traditional” xaxado, the Group seeks to preserve a memory. The xaxado featured by the Group, obviously, has a structure that is different from the "original". Dance steps and instruments have been added and their context is, today, of an artistic spectacle. In it, many layers of time dialogue and create a new meaning for this cultural manifestation. We notice that this cultural production is not found on a pure "traditional" scope. Its elaboration is made today by crossing the modern with the traditional and in the redefinition of the popular. In this sense, it is how it is made possible the insertion of a version of Luiz Gonzaga's song recorded on the 1950's and that carries in it other meanings for xaxado and for Lampião and cangaço. These elements had been used by Gonzaga and moved around in a historical moment in which people were trying to create and give visibility to a northeaster regional identity, prizing that which represented a traditional and country Northeast.
Soon after, it goes through a version of a song recorded in the 1980's by Zé Ramalho, artist who brings in his compositions a strong interaction and even a “dissolution” of the frontiers between the modern and the traditional, the local and the transnational. The Group emphasises with the song Cavalo do cão (Devil's horse - free translation) a representation of the cangaço as a movement that seeks to fight against the present social injustices on the hinterland, inflicted by the political elites. Thus, Lampião becomes a figure of a “vigilante”, by dialoguing with the notion of a social bandit (. It is interesting to notice the matter of the "inevitability" of the entrance of Lampião in the cangaço. Even though he was a “good man”, average country man, the paths of his life and the context in which he lived in have not given him another choice.
Finally, we can realize that the use of the xaxado serves to purposes far different from its "original ones": not as an entertainment of the cangaceiros anymore, but as a mean to create representations and a memory that are capable of mobilizing its individuals to face their present dilemmas.
