Ammirate da Pater, che inspiegabilmente indicava The White Ship come la più rappresentativa composizione rossettiana, esse hanno poi retto quasi indenni l’urto della ricezione postuma, fino alla lettura microscopica a cui sono state sottoposte dalla critica più recente, ma con una sopravvalutazione che a nostro avviso non convince .

Three long narrations in verses telling of deeds both historical and imaginary, based on the premonition of love rejected, un-satisfied or betrayed, or on the heroism of the past, were written and completed by Rossetti after 1870, and which make up – together with the later sonnets of The House of Life, whose dense, spasmodic linguistic concentration, both abstract and visionary, are almost unbelievably poles apart – the greatest and almost unique proof of his poetic genius until his demise, in a decade ever more marked by physical and mental exhaustion and therefore more devoted to the re-working of successful portrait-paintings of his past. Rossetti returned to a genre he had employed regularly at the start of his career, but the three ballads, though noteworthy as experiments in metre, are overlong, in both the complex plot and the rather gratuitous and sensational overloading of details from the font of Rossetti’s inspiration, except the sections into which elements of witchcraft, mystery, curses and omens come into play. Admired by Pater, who inexplicably points to The White Ship as Rossetti’s most representative work, they then escaped almost unhurt by the attack they received from their posthumous reception, until the close reading they underwent by more recent critics, but with an over-valuation which in my opinion is not convincing.

Esistono milioni di libri, ogni giorno ne vengono stampati altri, moltissimi altri, e l’idea che nella mia vita non riuscirò a leggere tutti quelli che vorrei mi perseguita fin da ragazzo. Cerco di consolarmi pensando che ogni libro, quando è potente, ne può rappresentare mille altri, e riesce ad aprire nuove finestre di conoscenza sul mondo e su noi stessi. Certo è che in quell’oceano di libri in cui nuotiamo, dobbiamo trovare quelli giusti per noi, inseguendo una sorta di percorso ideale e invisibile che ci permette di avvicinarci alle profondità che più ci appassionano.
Molti dei grandi classici, dall’antichità al XX secolo, fanno parte di noi al punto che spesso non riusciamo a ricordare quando li abbiamo sentiti nominare per la prima volta, e magari rimandiamo la loro lettura per anni, per poi un giorno sentire l’esigenza di leggerli. Alcuni di questi classici li teniamo a distanza per chissà quale pregiudizio, di cui non sapremmo rintracciare né l’origine né la motivazione, ma un bel giorno ce li troviamo in mano e scopriamo che ci sbagliavamo. A volte la scelta di un libro o di uno scrittore arriva per caso, o forse per un disegno del destino: ad esempio una bancarella sotto i portici in un giorno di pioggia, che ci regala il tempo per spulciare tra i vecchi libri, dove troviamo un’edizione che ci attira. Ma può avvenire anche in modi del tutto semplici, che poi scordiamo: una segnalazione su un giornale, un’intervista in radio, la citazione all’interno di un romanzo, una costola più colorata delle altre negli scaffali di una biblioteca, e via dicendo.
Il mio incontro con John Fante ha a che fare con il pregiudizio e con il caso. La prima volta che lo sentii nominare mi colpì il suo nome, mezzo italiano e mezzo americano. A parlarne era una persona che non conoscevo troppo bene, una donna in cui percepivo una sensibilità, una visione del mondo assai diversa e distante dalla mia. Quando disse che Fante era il suo scrittore preferito, pensai che a me non potesse piacere, e ci misi una pietra sopra. Per anni dimenticai quel nome. Finché un pomeriggio, in una libreria di amici, scorrendo con lo sguardo gli scaffali mi trovai davanti una costola verde chiaro: John Fante - La confraternita del Chianti (sto parlando della vecchia edizione di Marcos Y Marcos, in cui si forzava il titolo - The Brotherhood of the Grape - traducendo “Grape” con “Chianti”, invece che con “Uva”).
A quei tempi abitavo ormai da quasi quindici anni proprio nel Chianti, e dunque quel titolo mi incuriosì, ma nulla più di questo. Sapevo vagamente che Fante era cresciuto in America, e mi chiedevo cosa ne sapesse lui di una zona della Toscana che probabilmente non aveva nemmeno idea di dove fosse. Sfilai il libro dallo scaffale per leggere la prima pagina (mi tengo lontano dai risvolti : per capire se uno scrittore mi piace o no, leggo lui, non chi parla di lui), convinto di trovare la prova che quello scrittore non poteva piacermi, visto che piaceva tanto a una persona che apparteneva a un altro “mondo”. La prima riga mi sorprese, non mi aspettavo nulla di simile. Riga dopo riga arrivai in fondo alla pagina, e decisi di comprarlo. Era una pagina bella, emozionante, potente. Mi dissi che ero stato uno stupido a farmi ingannare dai pregiudizi, e scuotendo il capo contro me stesso tornai a casa con la voglia di leggere quel libro. Era estate, e mi sistemai in giardino, davanti a un bel panorama. A pagina trenta, chiusi il libro e chiamai il mio amico della libreria: “Per favore, trovami tutto quello che hai di John Fante.”
Non avevo davanti a me un rom anzo ben riuscito, o una storia appassionante, ma uno sguardo potente – e dunque una voce potente - capace di trasformare ogni faccenda personale in qualcosa di universale. Avevo davanti a me un grande narratore, come Jack London, Dostoevskij, Malaparte. La sua “molecola narrativa” era sana, garantiva la qualità della scrittura, e anche la capacità di penetrare le cose con la micidiale leggerezza dell’ironia. Il piacere che provavo era davvero grande.
Continuai a leggere il romanzo, ridendo e piangendo, scosso da emozioni che non provavo dal tempo in cui mi cibavo dei russi del XIX secolo. Quando arrivai alla fine, successe in me qualcosa di singolare. Vivevo due sentimenti opposti: da una parte ero felice di aver scoperto un portento della narrazione, capace di farmi dimenticare di avere un libro in mano, come se le emozioni mi arrivassero direttamente nel sangue senza passare dalla ragione, come una musica o un quadro. Dall’altra ero talmente soggiogato da quella scrittura così carica di immagini e di sentimenti, così potente e moderna rispetto ai miei insignificanti e antiquati tentativi (mancavano ancora diversi anni alla mia prima pubblicazione), che immaginavo già di abbandonare il mio sogno di diventare uno scrittore, e ciò significava per me paura e sofferenza. Che avrei fatto della mia vita, se perdevo quel sogno? Ma i grandi scrittori non possono causare danni a chi li ama, non potevo attribuire a Fante un disastro del genere, ed ecco che ben presto mi feci coraggio, dicendomi che i miti vanno divorati e digeriti, li si deve far entrare nel nostro sangue affinché ci aiutino a trovare la nostra “voce”.

Millions of books exist, and every day more are printed, lots more, and the thought that in my lifetime I won't get to read them all has haunted me from the time I was a child. I try to console myself by thinking that each book, especially when it is a powerful one, can represent thousands of others, and can open up new windows of knowledge on the world and on ourselves. Certainly it is in that ocean of books in which we swim, we have to find the right ones for us, following a sort of ideal, invisible path that allows us get closer to the deepest thoughts that stir us the most.
Many of the great classics, from antiquity to the twentieth-century, become a part of us to the point that often we don't remember when or where we had heard of their titles for the first time, and maybe we put off reading them for years, until one day we feel the necessity to read them. Some of these classics keep us at a distance by reason of one prejudice or another, the origin or the motivation of which we cannot trace, but one fine day they fall into our hands and we discover that we had been mistaken. At times our choice of a book or an author comes by chance, or perhaps by Nature's design, for example a bookstall under the porticos on a rainy day, when we are presented with the time to trawl through old volumes, until we find an edition that attracts us. But it can also come in much simpler ways, which we then forget about: an announcement in a newspaper, a radio interview, a quote in the middle of a novel, the spine of a book which is more colourful than the rest on the library shelves, and so on.
My introduction to John Fante has to do with both prejudice and chance. The first time I heard of him I was struck by his name, half Italian and half American. There was a woman speaking about him whom I didn’t know very well – a woman in whom I detected a sensibility, a vision of the world rather distant and different to mine. When she said that Fante was her favourite writer, I felt sure I wouldn’t like him, and I put him aside. Over the years I had forgotten that name. Until one afternoon in a bookshop belonging to friends of mine, running my eye across the shelves I found a bright green spine before me: John Fante – The Brotherhood of the Grape (La Confraternita del Chianti). I’m referring to the old edition by Marcos Y Marcos, in which the title sounded a little forced: he translated ‘grape’ with ‘chianti’ instead of ‘uva’.
In those days I had already been actually living in the Chianti for about fifteen years, and so that title made me curious, but nothing more. I knew vaguely that Fante had grown up in America, and I asked myself what did he know about an area in Tuscany that he had probably no idea of its whereabouts. I slipped the book off the shelf to read the first page (I keep well away from jacket notes: to find out if I like an author or not, I read him, not someone who talks about him!), and I was convinced I’d find the proof that I wouldn’t like that author, given that someone that belonged to a different world to me liked it so much. The first line surprised me; I wasn’t expecting anything like it. Line after line I was suddenly at the bottom of the page, and I decided to buy it. It was a beautiful page, emotional and powerful. I told myself that I had been a fool to allow myself be deceived by prejudices, and shaking my head in annoyance I headed back for home longing to read that book. It was summertime, so I set myself up in the garden before a beautiful panoramic view. At page thirty, I closed the book and called my friend at the bookshop: “Do me a favour, root out everything you have of John Fante for me.”
Before me was not simply a well-executed novel or an impassioned story, but a powerful insight – and consequently a powerful voice – capable of transforming every personal undertaking into something universal. I had before me a great narrator on the level of Jack London, Dostoevsky, or Malaparte. His ‘micronarrative’ style was sound, guaranteeing the quality of the writing, and also his capacity to penetrate situations with an incredibly subtle irony. It gave me enormous pleasure.
Continuing to read the novel – laughing and crying – I was shook by emotions I hadn’t felt since I feasted on the 19th century Russians. When I reached the end, something very peculiar was happening inside me. I was living with two opposing feelings: on the one hand, I was happy to have discovered a miracle of narration, capable of making me forget I had a book in my hand, as if emotions had arrived directly into my bloodstream without first passing through reason, as with music or a painting. On the other hand, I felt so overpowered by that writing, so loaded with imagery and feeling, so powerful and modern in comparison to my insignificant and antiquated attempts (it was still some years before my first publication), that I was thinking already I should abandon my dream of becoming a writer, and for me that meant fear and pain. What was I going to do with my life if I lost that dream? But the great writers can’t cause damage to those who love them, and I couldn’t attribute to Fante a disaster of that kind. So very soon afterwards I plucked up courage, telling myself that you have to eat and digest such miraculous literature, and let it enter your bloodstream until it helps you find your own ‘voice.’

I miei ricordi dell’alluvione sono quelli di un ragazzo di 12 anni che dalla sera alla mattina vede i propri genitori disperati per la perdita dell’attività di famiglia
L’acqua che saliva, acqua che con una forza spaventosa portava via mobili, macchine, tutto si muoveva con quest’acqua
Era un lago che praticamente occupava per due terzi gli edifici del centro di Firenze
Gli argini del fiume non erano le spallette a cui eravamo abituati, ma erano i palazzi del Lungarno
I suoni erano questi lugubri e spettrali di questi clacson delle macchine che si erano praticamente incantati
E il peggio è arrivato poi i giorni dopo. L’acqua che era scesa, piano piano era scesa lasciando questa specie di catrame, questo olio dappertutto sulle strade. Era un disastro
Firenze non c’era più nessun colore al di fuori di un grigio mota
L’alluvione arrrivò e in una notte distrusse l’attività completamente perché l’azienda era in un seminterrato ed era completamente coperta dal fango
Tutto era pieno di fango, la città era tutta silenziosa, marrone, nera, più che altro era piena di petrolio
Si tirava tutti fuori questi mobili, queste cose dagli scantinati, era pazzesco, fu una cosa veramente incredibile
Subito Fantacci si mosse per avere aiuti in America specialmente per gli artigiani
Anche perché c’erano tante piccole aziende artigianali di Firenze che avevano bisogno di aiuto per rimettersi su
Quello che il babbo capì è che andavano aiutati
Tayar, Fantacci e Pucci capirono che se non arrivavano questi finanziamenti le attività produttive avrebbero stentato a rimettersi in moto
Insieme a Emilio Pucci, Enzo Tayar e il babbo fecero la ALFA Fund
Questo Beppe Fantacci fece questa azione e tanti hanno preso coraggio dalle sue parole per non chiudere
Noi siamo riusciti a Firenze ad essere pronti per ripartire dopo poche settimane
Il 4 di Novembre il babbo mi sveglia e mi dice: Nanni, c’è l’alluvione. Il babbo non aveva dormito molto quella notte. Dopo aver aiutato il suo amico Armando Piccini a Ponte Vecchio era tornato a casa e si era probabilmente immaginato quello che sarebbe successo il giorno dopo.
La sera del 3 Novembre fu una bella serata, se così si può chiamare, perché ci avevano chiamati i vigili che controllavano il Ponte Vecchio fino a mezzanotte, mezzanotte e mezzo dicendo di venire a dare un’occhiata perché l’Arno stava gonfiando. Infatti c’era il ponte che tremava tutto e mentre eravamo lì indecisi “che si fa che non si fa” suonò il campanello e chi ti arriva? Ti arriva Beppe Fantacci, il tuo babbo e dice: “volete una mano?” “Sì, una mano, ma a scappare”
Montiamo in macchina e quando arriviamo a Piazzale Michelangelo proprio su questa balaustra io mi sporgo, guardo il fiume e dico “ma non è possibile” mai mi sarei immaginato quello che i miei occhi hanno visto
Io mi ricordo perfettamente questo affaccio e questo choc, nel senso: io arrivai sorridente perché pensavo ….. poi una volta affacciato….
Il Ponte Vecchio si vedeva poco più degli archi, il Ponte alle Grazie era virtualmente sparito. In quel momento la commozione di tutti era al massimo e le lacrime scendevano veramente dagli occhi di tutti perché il timore, la voce che correva era: il Ponte Vecchio non può reggere a questo tipo di impatto di tutta quest’acqua. Viene di sotto il Ponte Vecchio
Ricordo i visi di quelle persone che come me si affacciavano guardando quella che era normalmente una bellissima veduta di Firenze e che invece oggi era una veduta tragica. Ero un bambino ma ho capito qual era la gravità della situazione. Le persone piangevano, erano preoccupate per le sorti dei loro familiari, dei loro amici che erano intrappolati dal fiume
Il babbo mi disse: “Mimmina, Firenze non sarà mai più la stessa.” Mi è rimasta in mente questa frase
Il babbo a un certo punto mi disse: “guarda il fiume perché questa sarà un’immagine che ricorderai tutta la vita” e a distanza di 50 anni il babbo aveva ragione. Mai mi sarei aspettato un’immagine simile
E poi cosa avete fatto te e il nonno?
Il babbo con la sua cinepresa, perché era partito da casa con la sua cinepresa Bell&Howell, stava già filmando. Mi disse: “nanni, qua bisogna filmare, bisogna fare una testimonianza di questo giorno e insieme camminammo fino a via San Leonardo, poi Costa San Giorgio, Costa Scarpuccia. Proprio in quella zona lì riprendemmo il Ponte Vecchio da vicino. Fortunatamente c’era una scalinata e vedemmo questo fiume in piena. Vedevamo carcasse di animali, vedevamo alberi infrangersi contro il Ponte Vecchio e sentivamo il rumore di tutto questo. E io per la prima volta mi sono impaurito, mi sono messo a piangere. Il babbo mi ha preso la mano e mi ha detto: “stai tranquillo, stai tranquillo”
Il Ponte Vecchio è un miracolo che non sia cascato giù e il miracolo è dovuto al fatto che ci sono quelle tre arcate nel mezzo per cui l’acqua è riuscita a sfogarsi lì dentro e a passare nel mezzo
I negozi vennero spazzati via dalla piena, praticamente i muri e tutte le parti in aggetto caddero di sotto quindi spazzò tutto, pareti di qua di là, da monte a valle e quindi l’acqua potè defluire e il Ponte fu salvato
Dopo essere stati vicino al fiume il babbo mi disse: “io voglio montare sopra a un ponte” e non era facile perché tutti i ponti della città erano chiusi. Finalmente arrivammo in Piazza Pier Vettori e riuscimmo a montare sul ponte alla Vittoria e lì fece delle altre riprese, riuscì a riprendere le Cascine e tutta la zona. A un certo punto i vigili del fuoco ci chiamarono e ci dissero: “è pericoloso, tornate indietro”. E siamo stati praticamente gli ultimi due civili a rimanere sul ponte.
Dalle finestre abbiamo vissuto tutta la parte dell’acqua che saliva, i bandoni che si alzavano, le vetrine che si rompevano e la roba che usciva.
Ma perché non viene qualcuno magari tipo aereo o tipo elicottero ad avvertirci, tanto per dirci qualche cosa
Qui avevamo un metro e mezzo. Lei si può immaginare, gli affreschi erano un metro e mezzo sott’acqua. Quest’acqua marrone non era solo marrone, era oleosa, quindi era veramente un tremendo odore, un terribile odore
L’acqua verso le 8 di sera smise di essere così irruenta e si fermò e da quel momento ci fu un silenzio incredibile
Era spettrale, un buio pazzesco, questo odore nauseabondo di questa nafta che ormai aveva ammorbato Firenze
Una città senza luce, senza acqua, senza automobili, senza niente
Sembrava veramente che Firenze era morta
Un silenzio con soltanto delle voci che rimbalzavano da casa a casa dicendo “c’è qualcosa che ha bisogno di aiuto, passate, passate, passate a Palazzo Vecchio
“Sta crollando una casa in Via dell’Agnolo”. Da via dell’Agnolo si passava la voce di finestra in finestra, si arrivava in Piazza Santa Croce e noi lo dicevamo a quelli di Borgo dei Greci, Via dell’Anguillara, si arrivava fino a Via dei Gondi, Palazzo Vecchio …..
Ci ha raccontato poi il babbo che la notte sentire queste voci che gli chiedevano aiuto, a cui non poteva rispondere perché non aveva mezzi di rispondere, lo commuovevano, lo emozionavano e gli davano questo senso di impotenza ma anche un certo orgoglio che Firenze si rivolgeva a Palazzo Vecchio come aiuto
Io non mi ricordo come abbiamo passato la notte, non me lo ricordo. Certamente non è che abbiamo dormito granchè
E il giorno dopo?
Il giorno dopo il babbo volle tornare in città e lì abbiamo veramente avuto l’esatta dimensione della situazione
La città era piena di movimento, piena di gente, ma era tutto un movimento silenzioso, non c’era nessuno che parlava
Il silenzio del lavoro, perché purtroppo tutte le attività si erano bloccate. Il silenzio della gente che si arrotolava le maniche e si metteva lì a spalare
Mi ricordo che il giorno dopo quando l’acqua cominciò a defluire, andammo con il babbo a cercare di capire che cosa si poteva fare e si poteva fare davvero ben poco, perché l’azienda era in un seminterrato ed era completamente coperta dal fango
Entrai in negozio e mi ricordo l’immagine che non c’era luce e c’era tutta una moquette che sembrava come se fosse stata risparmiata, non vedendo nella penombra, sembrava quasi tutto intatto e invece non era moquette, era uno strato di fango che aveva distrutto tutto, aveva danneggiato merce e quant’altro
I mobili che erano tipo sedie, tavolini o sgabelli, quindi mobili puri e semplici avevano galleggiato quindi erano da tutte le parti possibili e immaginabili. I banchi tipografici invece, che sono banchi pieni di cassette di piombo, quelli non si erano mossi
I mobli, questi qui alle pareti erano rimasti tutti intatti, nonostante i vetri rotti, mentre il pavimento era completamente sprofondato per via di un ramo, di un tronco anzi, che era arrivato direttamente dall’Arno, essendo in discesa e aveva rotto tutto il pavimento
Abbiamo cominciato a spalare, non si sapeva bene cosa si stesse facendo, perché si levava la melma da una parte e la si buttava nella strada, ma la strada era piena, le fogne non ricevevano quindi sembrava che noi si buttasse via la melma da una parte e che andasse a finire da quell’altra parte
Aprii la porta degli uffici, ora mi scappa da ridere ma allora no, aprii la porta degli uffici e richiusi. Dissi: “qui c’è da rifare tutto, sicchè lasciamo perdere, torniamo a casa”
La perdita fu enorme perché si trattava di 16.000 paia di scarpe che il costo di allora era di 2.000 lire, perciò la perdita fu di circa 30/32 milioni dell’epoca
Mi ricordo anche però che, ripresi dallo choc, dopo due giorni, appena l’acqua cominciò a calare, in un arco brevissimo di tempo, grazie all’intervento anche di tipo manuale di tutti i dipendenti, degli amici, dei parenti, l’azienda fu rimessa in piedi
Per i fiorentini l’avevano preso come un’offesa personale
Però la reazione è stata forte, perché noi fiorentini siamo polemici, Guelfi e Ghibellini, non ci va mai bene nulla, però al momento della necessità ci uniamo, facciamo blocco e quindi era come un Risorgimento
Tutti pronti a rinascere, non volevano abbattersi
Una delle cose più belle nel periodo dopo l’alluvione è stata forse la lezione di vita che Firenze ha dato a noi che lavoravamo lì e a tutto il mondo, perché i fiorentini hanno reagito con un coraggio, una positività, un entusiasmo e con il loro meraviglioso senso dell’umorismo e spirito
Devo dire che la città reagì in modo fantastico. I fiorentini credo che sono eccezionali nei momenti di impegno. Il risultato arrivò e la città ricordo che ripartì molto più velocemente di quello che si pensava
I cittadini di Firenze erano stati colpiti fortemente, ma erano tutti lì a lavorare, con una tale lena, una tale forza e una tale serietà come mai ho visto, non dico i fiorentini, ma in generale, qualcuno così preso da questo desiderio di vincere su questa cosa che era andata così male
L’entusiasmo che tutti ci hanno messo per ricominciare è interno, è insito nel carattere della popolazione fiorentina
E sempre con il sorriso e sempre con …. senza mai lamentarsi
Non c’era un commento, non c’era una richiesta di pietà
Ci fu la sensazione fino dall’inizio di non essere soli
Ci fu questo piglio di volontà di ricominciare e roba del genere che, diciamo, alla tristezza di quello che era successo, si abbinò la voglia di fare. E nel fare venne fuori la serenità, ricominciarono le battute, lo spirito dei fiorentini
C’era un’unione, uno spirito di unione, di civiltà, di non abbattersi per una cosa che tu puoi vincere, no? Tu puoi vincere una cosa così
E questo credo una volta era comunque un atteggiamento che l’umanità di una volta aveva, di preoccuparsi degli altri e non solo di se stessi
Firenze ebbe una gran fortuna in quel periodo. Avevamo un gran Sindaco perché Bargellini fu di una vicinanza a noi in maniera spettacolare. Con le sue calosce girava, stava accanto, sentiva i problemi, non era il politico che ti faceva così la presenza tanto per fare
E la moglie del Sindaco, la nonna, la Lelia, quale fu il suo contributo, il suo aiuto, cosa faceva lei durante l’alluvione?
Il babbo era in Palazzo Vecchio. La mamma diresse Via delle Pinzochere, il nostro palazzo e la casa nostra rimase sempre aperta. La nonna riusciva a fare diventare la nostra casa come un centro di accoglienza e noi si mangiava quel poco che c’era ma chi veniva poteva mangiare con noi
Noi stessi avevamo al piano di sopra degli studenti che il sabato e la domenica avevano il frigorifero vuoto, per cui vennero tutti a mangiare da noi. Si faceva delle grandi paste, spaghettate per 10/12 persone per qualche giorno
Dapprima chi ce l’aveva in casa lo distribuiva agli altri dalle finestre. “Non ho più pane. Ce l’avete voi un po’ di pane?” Allora con una borsetta con la fune si mandava il pane a quello e a quell’altro.
Poi si prendeva l’acqua dalla cantina, perché noi avevamo una cantina, quindi piena d’acqua, l’acqua della cantina con un secchio, praticamente ci si lavava con quell’acqua lì, perché non c’era acqua, non c’era nulla
Mia madre mi diceva: “guarda bisogna andare a fare la fila per l’acqua”, quindi andavamo alle cisterne con queste piccole tank, tutti in coda
Cosa facevano i giovani? Ci mettevamo gli stivali di gomma e si camminava in centro cercando dove e come poter aiutare
E per me c’era un senso di libertà, un senso di sentirsi utili
Mi adoprai molto per andare a ripulire dal fango quello che era stato alluvionato alla nostra scuola
Io sono andata in Santa Croce e ho lavorato in un centro di soccorso
Allora mi divertivo la sera, Camminavo qui all’angolo, c’era uno dei raduni degli angeli, dei famosi angeli che venivano da tutte le parti del mondo
Questi ragazzi, gli angeli del fango o chi per loro, ma anche i soldati stessi che cantavano tornando a casa alla fine di una giornata che in fondo era stata faticosa, nel fango, nell’umido, nel freddo
C’era un rapporto immediato, anche se non ci si capiva come si parlava, però ridevamo, sentivamo queste canzoni…. Erano dei momenti, ti assicuro Silvia, indimenticabili. In tutta questa tragedia era più la parte positiva per un giovane, che la parte negativa
Il nonno già durante tutto il giorno dell’alluvione continuava a dire “ma io devo aiutare, devo trovare un sistema, devo escogitare un sistema per poter aiutare la gente di Firenze
Il babbo ebbe proprio questa convinzione che andavano aiutate subito le persone più colpite che erano appunto quelli che avevano perso tutto nelle loro botteghe: il materiale di lavoro e spesso anche l’abitazione. Aveva capito che sennò questa gente se ne sarebbe andata
Se non c’era questo prestito molti di loro si sarebbero persi. Sicuramente dovevano andare a lavorare chissà dove, ma si sarebbero persi
Quando Fantacci subito disse che avrebbe potuto aiutarlo, il babbo veramente fu felicissimo e delegò a lui questi grandi aiuti che arrivarono dall’America
E il rapporto fra Piero Bargellini e Beppe Fantacci qual era? Qual era il loro legame?
Devo dire la verità, erano due persone che si trovavano molto bene insieme, perché avevano veramente degli ideali totalmente simili. Sono persone che amavano profondamente Firenze, molto oneste, molto serie, adoravano la moglie, tutt’e due, proprio con queste famiglie quasi patriarcali; 6 figli il babbo, tantissimi figli loro, perciò avevano dei valori umani che li legavano molto e per questo si stimavano profondamente
Fango, fango, fango, tutto sapeva di fango, tutto diventava fango nella città priva di acqua potabile e sguazzando in quel fango Beppe Fantacci bussò al mio portone di Via delle Pinzochere, nel quartiere di Santa Croce. Si presentò lordo di fango, reduce, insieme con Gastone Testa, dai luoghi più tristi del quartiere, dove avevano portato coperte e indumenti di lana, viveri, medicinali e disinfettanti. Erano stati interventi di pronto soccorso, ma Beppe, il signese americanizzato, con il volto ossuto, lo sguardo acuto, lo spirito desto e la parola pronta, avrebbe voluto fare qualcosa di più sistematico e più continuativo in favore delle famiglie alluvionate e specialmente degli artigiani che dovevano riprendere immediatamente la loro attività
Questa azione che lui ha fatto, se si rivolgeva a persone che avevano paura del futuro, non se la sentivano eccetera, ha dato una grossa spinta per ricominciare. Questo è fuori di dubbio
Ma il nonno com’era, come padre?
Era simpatico, era scherzoso, era buffo
Intanto un babbo affettuosissimo. Io uno dei primi ricordi che ho di lui da bambina, siccome lui faceva ginnastica tutte le mattine, ero seduta sui suoi piedi perché potesse fare gli esercizi degli addominali, ogni volta che veniva su mi dava un bacino e poi tornava giù
Mi ricordo la sua voce quando tornava a casa, ero bambino, mentre saliva le scale diceva: “s’ha da giocare, s’ha da giocare
Lui adorava la fotografia. Lui ci aveva una dark room in casa dove si stava in America, in the basement, che poteva fare buio per sviluppare le fotografie. Insomma era quello il suo hobby.
Aveva un amico che aveva bisogno di fare un cartellone pubblicitario per la festa del babbo e il babbo ha fatto questa fotografia di lui in pigiama, scaruffato, con in braccio questa neonata che chiaramente non lo faceva dormire durante la notte e quella neonata sono io.
E poi filmava continuamente e naturalmente spesso a noi questo dava anche noia. “Basta babbo”
Si brontolava perché il compleanno, il cartello col numero, qualunque cosa noi facessimo veniva in qualche maniera registrata
Quando il babbo prendeva il proiettore e si guardavano questi film, si spengevano tutte le luci, insomma tutti si divertivano moltissimo.
Ricordo infinite serate passate a guardare questi film, con tutti i limiti perché erano proiettori che, o bruciavano la pellicola, o si incantavano, oppure alla fine di una bellissima proiezione la pellicola era tutta per terra, per cui era tutto senza nessuna ambizione di farne un’opera d’arte, ma forse un atto d’amore
Il babbo odiava l’inverno. Ci portava a Sarasota, Florida
E lì era il posto ideale per il babbo. E è la sede invernale del circo Barnum & Bailey
Una volta, quando siamo arrivati in Florida un inverno, è arrivata una troupe cinematografica che stava filmando un film su questo circo chiamato “the greatest show on earth” il più grande spettacolo del mondo e il babbo ci portava continuamente a vedere le riprese perché naturalmente lui aveva anche questo dono: riusciva a entrare dappertutto
Ricordo benissimo tuo padre. L’ho conosciuto nel 1962 andando in America. Era il mio primo viaggio in nave, con mia madre, mia sorella Giovanna. La nave si staccava dal molo e lui aveva un fazzoletto bianco e salutava. “Beppe chi stai salutando?” – “no, io nessuno. Qui bisogna farlo, quando si parte ….” E lui sventolava questo fazzoletto bianco con una simpatia e una partecipazione. Era una persona che coinvolgeva e travolgeva
Sempre sorridente, sempre felice, generoso, che quando vedeva Emilio, si incontravano, sorridevano tutti e due felici di incontrarsi. C’era proprio un’amicizia che si vedeva, visiva
Quando viaggiava in nave sapeva che era importante dover star seduto in sala da pranzo, vicino al Captain table, che lì avrebbe conosciuto tutte le persone…
E poi arrivavano questi incredibili Christmas a Natale della famiglia Fantacci che erano molto, molto fantasiosi

Quelli sono una testimonianza dell’importanza di mantenere i contatti con le persone
Una delle prime cose che mi colpiva sempre erano i 6.000 biglietti di Natale che mandava ogni anno. Io dicevo “ma come si fa ad avere 6.000 amici, 6.000 conoscenti ?” Poi negli anni ho capito, perché dovunque si andasse insieme in gruppo, Beppe riusciva a fare amicizia con chiunque, scambiarsi i bigliettini o scambiarsi gli indirizzi, poi a Natale, anche se aveva visto questa persona una sola volta, gli mandava gli auguri. E da lì nascevano poi delle relazioni che portava avanti negli anni.
Lì c’era secondo me la mano americana che incideva, che faceva sì che questo accadesse
La mamma era americana, ma il babbo era più americano della mamma, perché l’America lo aveva accolto, lui c’era andato nel 1927 e lì aveva vissuto negli anni, i primi anni gli anni del tracollo finanziario di Wall Street, la ripresa e poi gli anni della guerra. Quando è tornato in Italia, è tornato in Italia quasi da americano che tornava in Italia. Avevamo la macchina americana, avevamo portato la lavatrice che nessuno ancora aveva
L’Italia era proprio ridotta toppe sulle toppe, io me lo ricordo bene. Quindi Beppe trovò questo paese distrutto, un popolo che era pronto a ripartire, ma senza forze, aveva bisogno di stimoli, mancava tutto.
E lui arrivò con idee nuove di commercio, anche di capacità di aiutare, diciamo, il prossimo, perché il prossimo poteva diventare una produzione economica anche per tutto il resto della società
Era una persona affascinante, nel senso che, già a sentirlo parlare, l’entusiasmo che infondeva in qualunque cosa che poteva dire…
Il negoziatore, sai quello che riusciva a trovare le soluzioni. Lui andava d’accordo con la destra e con la sinistra, andava d’accordo con la Chiesa e con gli anticlericali. Io non ho mai trovato una persona che ce l’avesse con lui, perché lui andava d’accordo con tutti
Beppe Fantacci era un uomo di comunicazione, un imprenditore vero, cioè uno che non aspetta che il lavoro gli arrivi dal cielo. Un uomo di sfondamento. Lui, se c’era bisogno di andare a vedere il Papa, lui arrivavava a vedere il Papa e a parlare con il Papa
Decideva che bisognava fare una cosa, la faceva, poi si preoccupava eventualmente di come fare a farla, però diceva: “bisogna farla? Si fa!”
Nei primi anni cinquanta il mio babbo diventò Presidente dell’Arcispedale di Santa Maria Nuova. Ad un certo punto si rese necessario l’acquisto di un polmone d’acciaio. L’ospedale non aveva soldi per comprare questo polmone d’acciaio. Il mio babbo era crucciato. Beppe gli disse: “guarda Alberto, non ti preoccupare il polmone d’acciaio te lo compro io”. E così alla presenza di Beppe, di Marjorie, del Prefetto, dei Frati Cappuccini e del Direttore sanitario, nessun’altro, senza nessuna pubblicità, senza nessun secondo scopo, fu benedetto questo polmone d’acciaio
Tuo padre è stato un grande imprenditore, perché era un uomo internazionale, ma proprio cosmopolita
Andava in America, scopriva cose, le riportava, si facevano dei saggi sul mercato, qualcuna andava bene, qualcuna un po’ meno
Aveva la distribuzione per l’Italia di due cose di prestigio: la penna Parker e gli occhiali da sole
Direi che Parker ha avuto gli anni d’oro in Italia, grazie a Beppe Fantacci e alla API
Noi come distributori eravamo praticamente responsabili dell’80% del marketing del prodotto. Per Parker curavamo anche le confezioni che erano una parte integrante del prodotto, essendo un articolo da regalo o anche da autoregalo. Anche con Ray-Ban fu ….. il marchio Ray-Ban, a livello di griffe, è nato in Italia
Pensare in quegli anni che gli italiani avrebbero comprato queste tantissime migliaia, centinaia di migliaia di occhiali Ray-Ban, voglio dire: quella è visione. Cioè non c’è lo studio del consulente che te lo dice. Quello è aver avuto il senso del business
Non lasciava nulla di intentato, mai
Nei suoi affari si è sempre occupato principalmente della pubblicità
Lui la mattina si alzava, veniva in ufficio: “mah, sai cosa mi è venuto in mente?”

Mi ricordo che c’era questo bel ponte, però che era stato ricostruito dopo la guerra. Però questa statua non aveva la testa
Si diceva che l’avessero presa i soldati, un soldato l’avesse portata in America, quell’altro l’aveva portata in Germania, comunque questa testa non si trovava. Allora Beppe Fantacci, con la sua fantasia, disse: “perché non si fa un concorso pubblicitario per vedere se si ritrova, abbinato alla Parker?”
Una taglia di 3.000 dollari è stata messa sulla testa della Primavera. C’è il signor Parker, con un assegno, una cosa abbastanza inusuale a quei tempi, vero?

Beppe fece degli articoli per questa ricerca della Primavera. Questi articoli de “La Nazione” furono ripresi dalla stampa estera e pubblicati in tutto il mondo, in tutte le lingue e cominciarono queste ricerche e ogni tanto si sapeva qualche cosa che diceva: “ah, forse si ritrova la testa della Primavera…. C’è qualcuno che sa qualcosa …..” Quindi continuò, perché non si ritrovava, per diversi anni eccetera
Mi ricordo benissimo quando venne fuori la notizia che fu trovata, poi chi la trovò si attivò subito per riportarla dov’era e provare che era proprio la testa che mancava alla statua della Primavera
Fu una campagna che raggiunse tutto il mondo, tutto il mondo.
Ma, senti, gli aspetti negativi, se c’erano?
Un padre ingombrante, una figura molto forte, uno che pensava di sapere dove dovevi andare, specialmente se sceglievo una strada che non era quella che lui pensava fosse giusta, perché lui lo faceva a fin di bene. Per esempio io sono rientrato in Italia dagli Stati Uniti troppo presto. Lì mi sentivo più libero, meno condizionato. In una piccola città come Firenze avere un padre come Beppe Fantacci, chiamato Beppe, non era facile. Lo conoscevano tutti in città. Era sempre proiettato in iniziative, in viaggi, in movimento, quindi un uomo instancabile, un uomo….. come tutti gli uomini geniali, come tutti gli uomini di successo, come tutti gli uomini che raggiungono traguardi importanti, spesso la famiglia ne risente. Forse avrei voluto che si soffermasse un po’, ecco, però queste sono delle virtù che in un caso come quello dell’alluvione sono state estremamente utili, perché il babbo era uno che dalle difficoltà trovava degli stimoli, quindi l’alluvione è stato per il babbo probabilmente un momento dove tante delle cose che aveva imparato, che aveva sperimentato, le ha potute mettere in atto
I nostri genitori erano in America, quindi chiaramente eravamo ragazzini e preoccupati loro, ma in realtà stavamo bene. Mio padre tornò il giorno dopo dell’alluvione e lui a quel punto si attivò subito per prendere un’iniziativa e fare qualcosa per la città che ci accoglieva e che ci faceva vivere
La gente era spaventata. Chi si trovava in giro per le strade Emilio lo riportava a casa e prendeva proprio sotto braccio delle persone per riportarle fisicamente a casa loro. Quindi già quella mattina lui si adoperò per essere di aiuto
Emilio io lo descrivo con una parola sola: un genio, cioè era un personaggio fuori dalla realtà. Era talmente bravo e talmente avanti a tutti gli altri che forse oggi un personaggio così non esiste
Emilio Pucci, sappiamo tutti chi era, uno stilista, un artista, una persona rappresentativa di quell’attività di moda che si andava sviluppando attraverso i buying office in Italia
Enzo Tayar era invece una persona di una praticità e di una determinazione unica ed era uno sempre molto disponibile per gli altri
Per certi aspetti mi sento simile a lui, per quello che riguarda sempre questa spinta propulsiva verso la vita. Credo che siano dei caratteri
Io lo ricordo come un padre affettuosissimo e allo stesso tempo molto forte. Personalmente, come maschio, una figura da emulare, ma molto difficile da raggiungere
Tayar, Fantacci e Pucci capirono che se non arrivavano questi finanziamenti le attività produttive avrebbero stentato a rimettersi in moto
L’8 di novembre, quindi quattro giorno dopo l’alluvione, abbiamo fatto una riunione e si decise di partire con questa idea di fare un tipo di sovvenzione gestito dall’Associazione dei buying office che chiedevamo ai nostri clienti che conoscevano bene Firenze di dare un contributo per aiutare gli alluvionati
Come sono riusciti a raccogliere i soldi?
Sono andati negli Stati Uniti e hanno fatto vedere questo film per far capire agli americani la tragedia di Firenze
Ci fu subito una mobilitazione dei grandi department stores americani perché erano interessatissimi a riaprire e a ricominciare a fare i loro acquisti in Italia, soprattutto erano interessatissimi all’economia e all’artigianato fiorentino
Tutti questi grossi clienti di Tayar spontaneamente hanno offerto la loro disponibilità ad aiutare gli artigiani di Firenze a ricominciare, perché il rischio era che questo avrebbe sparire questo mondo che era la caratteristica principale, che tuttora è la caratteristica principale di Firenze
Lo scopo era quello di rimettere in piedi Firenze il prima possibile
Per cui, prima a distanza, con collegamenti e informazioni su tutte le aziende che avevano sofferto danni ingenti, circa 300 e poi con un viaggio negli Stati Uniti che fecero loro tre, incontrando i top managers di tutti i grandi department stores, arrivarono alla sottoscrizione di questo fondo ALFA – American Loans of Florentine Artisans, che per la cifra di un milione e mezzo di dollari, per quei tempi ingentissima, si riprometteva appunto di aiutare tutte le aziende in difficoltà
E quindi il fondo ALFA è nato proprio con questo spirito, è nato prima cercando i contributi dai clienti americani che erano tutti clienti dei vari uffici dell’ANIBO, poi ci siamo resi conto che conveniva, con questi fondi che venivano dall’America, garantire la banca, la quale avrebbe dato per conto nostro una sovvenzione gratuita, senza nessun interesse, a 36 mesi. Sai, dare il credito gratuito in un momento in cui gli interessi erano del 25% non è poco
Per di più il fondo, pur non chiedendo interessi, finì in positivo perché resero i soldi tutti, ci fu quel minimo ….. La banca che teneva i soldi dava un interesse su quello che non era stato distribuito
Un mitico manager di quegli anni, Mister Farkas di Alexander’s, disse: “soltanto dei fiorentini potevano escogitare un piano così machiavellico”
Ma tutto questo è stato fatto nel giro di pochissimi giorni, perché è cominciato ad essere operativo dopo dieci giorni
Non sapevo di questo fondo ALFA, per cui quando sono stato avvisato sono rimasto felicissimo, perché poi ho avuto modo di leggere la modalità con cui …. il coraggio con cui un gruppo di fiorentini eccellenti partì, prese l’aereo, andò negli Stati Uniti a chiedere di fare qualcosa per Firenze, qualcosa per l’economia di Firenze, qualcosa che legava questa grande capacità del saper fare fiorentino alla grande capacità di distribuire questi prodotti negli Stati Uniti, ho appreso che anche noi siamo stati beneficiari di ben 1.500.000 di lire dell’epoca, per cui una cifra molto consistente, per rimettere in piedi il più velocemente possibile l’attività
Un giorno entrò in farmacia il Signor Fantacci che era un nostro cliente e un amico di mio papà e gli parlò di questa opportunità di una disponibilità di questo fondo, abbastanza sostanziosa, mi sembra circa sui 2.000.000, che poteva quindi far indirizzare le operazioni, diciamo, non in senso di buttar via tutto e mettere mobilia moderna, nuova, ma in un restauro conservativo che a noi ci piaceva molto di più
La nostra ditta, diciamo, aveva avuto anche un aiuto dal fondo ALFA per un importo di 2.000.000 di lire che, a quell’epoca, era una cifra importantissima e che sicuramente ci ha aiutato anche a riprenderci o a farci continuare nel nostro lavoro
Anche questi 3.000.000 furono importanti. Mi ricordo di essere andata alla Banca d’Italia, un ambiente per me sconosciuto, imponente e non mi sentivo di andare a chiedere l’elemosina, io mi sentivo di andare a dire: “grazie che voi ci aiutate, noi non vi dimenticheremo”
Grazie a questo fondo abbiamo ottenuto un finanziamento di 5.000.000 e quello ci ha consentito di rimettere in linea gli impianti. Tenga conto che 5.000.000 nel ’66 erano soldi
L’alluvione è stata, oltre alle cose che ha potuto distruggere, ha potuto sciupare, era un discorso forse anche che uno si poteva abbattere, diciamo, forse anche più del normale, quindi anche un aiuto materiale sicuramente ci ha dato una spinta a rimboccarci le maniche e andare avanti
Assorbito il colpo ci siamo sentiti forti, cioè che se il lavoro c’era, c’era anche la volontà di ricontinuare e di migliorare, perché noi si doveva vendere un prodotto anche leggermente più caro se si voleva anche riprendersi in breve tempo e per vendere qualche cosa a più alto prezzo bisogna sia migliore. Perciò ci siamo sentiti e tuttora lo siamo, con questo stimolo e con quest’idea di migliorare
All’epoca facevamo queste cose qua, che era un prodotto interamente fatto a mano, decorato a oro vero, pitturato a mano, lo facevamo usando stampi in bronzo che erano fatti da artigiani essi stessi. Noi lo stiamo usando ancora questo stampo, sulle collezioni attuali, ma qui abbiamo lasciato e ci sono ancora, le tracce del fango del 1966
Come potete vedere, un restauro conservativo ha permesso di mantenere i cassetti originali, restaurati, però con ancora il petrolio originale del ’66 e rimettere quindi in piedi un negozio che Mustermann fondò nel 1867 e che ancora praticamente è uguale
Quindi, volessimo leggere se quel milione e mezzo nel nostro caso ha funzionato dovremmo dire: “grazie, sì, ha funzionato molto bene”
Io mi ricordo i suoni, i suoni delle voci delle persone, i suoni dello sciacquìo dell’acqua e mi ricordo perfettamente quando dopo tre giorni dall’alluvione si andò a tirar su la saracinesca e si vide che tutto dentro era pieno di fango. Mi ricordo l’espressione del mio babbo che disse: “è tutto finito, è tutto in terra, è tutto nel fango”. E poi mi ricordo il rumore del camion del Comune che venne a macinare le scarpe per tre giorni. Mi ricordo questo stridìo di questa ruota che macinava le scarpe ed erano sacrifici di intere generazioni. Poi ricordo il suono della campana, dove tutto era silenzio, buio, non c’erano stelle, sentii però il rintocco. Questo rintocco, anche questo dopo tre giorni, che disse: “il pericolo è passato” e ci si sentì comunità e io personalmente pensai: “qualcuno ci aiuterà, ricominceremo” e così pensarono i miei genitori. Mi commuovo tuttora a ripensare, comunque è passato 50 anni, sono ancora qui, sono contenta di aver avuto, insieme ai miei, la forza di proseguire, grazie all’aiuto che abbiamo avuto. E noi insieme alle nostre maestranze sempre vicine, ci siamo rimboccati le maniche veramente e abbiamo ricominciato. Ricominciato con l’entusiasmo di prima e con la sicurezza che si sarebbe potuto andare avanti anche meglio, cioè rimettendo le robe a posto, ricomprando la roba, perché tutti ci avevano dato una mano e io li devo ringraziare.

We saw animal carcasses, trees shattering against the bridge, we heard the noise of it all. I was terrified and started to cry. Dad took me by the hand and comforted me

To tell the truth, the two got on really well with each other, because they really had very similar ideals. They loved Florence deeply, very honest, serious men who adored their wives, which was appropriate as these families were rather patriarchal; Dad with six children, lots of children in the other family, they had common human values and for that reason they had great respect for one another

He adored photography. He had a dark room in America where he lived, in the basement, so he could develop the photographs; that was his hobby really.

He had a friend who needed to make an advertisement poster for Father’s day and Dad did this photo of himself in his pyjamas, dishevelled, with this new-born child in his arms which was clearly preventing him from sleeping during the night – and that new-born child was me!

One time, when we arrived in Florida one winter, a cinematographic troupe was making a film on the circus called “The Greatest Show on Earth” - Dad brought us continually to watch the shoot because, of course, that was another of his gifts: he could get in everywhere

I remember your father very well. I met him in 1962 going to America. It was my first time in a boat, with my father, my mother and sister Giovanna. The ship pulled out from the quay and he was waving with a white handkerchief. “Beppe, who are you waving to?” “No one.” You’re supposed to do that here, when you’re leaving...” And he waved that white handkerchief with affection, playing his part. He was someone who would get involved wholeheartedly

I’d say “how can you have 6,000 friends?” Over the years I realised Beppe managed to make friends with anyone, exchanged cards or addresses, and at Christmas, even if they only met one time, he would send him greetings. He would nurture friendships that he would carry on throughout the years

In the early fifties Dad became President of the Arcispedale di Santa Maria Nuova hospital. At a certain point they saw it necessary to acquire an iron lung. The hospital didn’t have the money. My Dad was tormented. Beppe said to him: “Look Alberto, don’t worry, I’ll buy it for you.” And so in the presence of Beppe, Marjorie, the Prefect, the Capuchin Friars, and the Chief Medical Officer, with no publicity or any ulterior motive, the hospital was blessed with an iron lung.

The foreign press published it throughout the world in all languages; every now and then you’d hear something said such as “Ah, maybe they’ll find Primavera’s head”… “Someone knows something...” and so it continued; it wasn’t found for several years

A father who was big and ungainly, a very strong figure, one that thought he knew where you should go, especially if I chose a path that wasn’t the right one according to him, but he had the best of intentions. For example, I came back to Italy from the United States too early. There I felt more free, less conditioned. Having a father like Beppe Fantacci in a small city like Florence wasn’t easy. Everyone knew him. He was always involved in initiatives, going on trips, he was tireless… as with all genial men, men of success, often the family suffers as a result. His were qualities that, at a time such as the flood, were extremely useful. My Dad found stimuli in difficult situations, and so the flood was probably an event where many of the things he had learned and experimented with could be put into action

On the 8th of November, four days after the flood , they met and decided to leave with this idea of organising a subvention through the Buying Office association, asking our clients who knew Florence well to give a contribution to help the flood victims

How did they go about collecting the money?

They went to the US and showed that film to let the Americans know about the tragedy of Florence

Suddenly there was a mobilisation of the big American department Stores, they were very interested in restarting their import business from Italy; they were most interested in Florence’s economy and artisan business

All these big clients of Tayar’s spontaneously offered to make themselves available to help the artisans of Florence to start over, because there was a risk that this world would disappear – which to this day is the very identity, the very essence of Florence

The aim was to get Florence back on its feet as quickly as possible

So connections were made and information was gathered on all the businesses that had suffered enormous damage - around 300 – they met the top managers of all the great Department Stores, and the three men arrived there when people were subscribing to this ALFA foundation – (American Loans for Florentine Artisans) – totalling one and a half million dollars, a huge sum for the time; there and then they promised to help all the businesses in difficulty

And so the ALFA foundation was really born in that spirit, born firstly asking for contributions from American clients who were themselves clients of the various offices of the ANIBO, then these funds came with a bank guarantee, interest free for 36 months. You know, free credit at a time when interest rates were 25% is no small thing

Furthermore the fund, even though it wasn’t asking for interest, ended up in the black because after giving out all the money, there was some left over… and the bank which held the money gave interest on what wasn’t distributed

A mythical manager in those years, Mr Farkas of Alexander’s said “only Florentines could devise such a Machiavellian plan”

But all this was achieved in a matter of a few days, because it began to be operative after ten days

I hadn’t known about this ALFA fund, I was ecstatic, because I could then go about it… the courage with which a group of excellent Florentines departed for the States to ask them to do something for Florence’s economy, linking our know-how to their great capacity to distribute these products; we too had been beneficiaries of a good one and a half million lire at the time, to get our business up and running in the shortest possible time

I remember the sounds, the sounds of people’s voices, the sounds of the water gurgling and I remember perfectly when after three days you went to lift the blinds to see that everything inside was full of mud. I remember my father’s expression when he said “It’s all over, everything’s on the floor, everything’s covered in mud.” Then I remember the sound of the Comune truck which came to grind the shoes for three days. I remember the screech of that wheel that crunched them, the sacrifice of three generations. I remember the sound of the bell, where everything else was silent, dark, no stars, you could only hear the chimes. Those chimes, even after three days, said: “the danger is passed” and you could feel the sense of community, and I personally was thinking: “someone will help us, we will start again” and my parents were thinking the same. I’m emotional now when I think of it even though 50 years have passed, I am still here, I am happy to have been helped, with my family, to have had the strength to continue. And we, together with our workforce always close by, we really knuckled down and started over, with the enthusiasm we had before and with the security that we would be able to go forward even better than before, putting all the stuff back in its place, buying new materials, and by so doing we are thanking everyone who had given us help.
