Source text - Italian I lupi passarono sotto la grande ruota panoramica dirigen dosi sottovento verso la giostra dell'autoscontro. Correva no veloci e sicuri nell'erba alta che iniziava a ingiallirsi per l'arrive dell'autunno. Presto il giallo avrebbe virato al rosso insane dei tronchi degli alberi e a quello scuro, come sangue raggrumato, della ruggine che copriva la ferraglia del luna park. Solo la neve avrebbe avuto pieta di quel parco abbandonato, ricoprendolo di una coltre candida per alcuni lunghi mesi. I lupi si acquattarono fra le vecchie automobiline
elettriche osservando i cervi che si abbeveravano a una grande vasca. Un tempo, doveva essere stata una fontana ricca di spruzzi e giochi d'acqua. I maschi ogni tanto alzavano ilca po adornato da lunghe coma per annusare l'aria e fiutare i predatori, ma si riempivano le narici di un venticello di po nente, greve di odori della citta fantasma di Pripjat'.
All'improvviso tutti gli animali si irrigidirono, drizzando le orecchie. Un rombo sordo si stava avvicinando a velocita sostenuta. Tre fuoristrada carichi di uomini armati irruppero nel piazzale. Grida, risate e spari. Due cervi caddero sotto i colpi, gli altri fuggirono via veloci inseguiti dalle pallottole. I mezzi si fermarono e gli uomini saltarono giu dai cassoni. La maggior parte indossava tute mimetiche militari ed era armata di fucili mitragliatori e pistole che spuntavano dai cinturoni. Dalle giacche ciondolavano rilevatori di radiazioni. Non sembravano affatto cacciatori. Nemmeno quelli ch erano scesi dal pick-up piu nuovo e costoso, sfoggiando autentici ed eleganti indumenti inglesi e tenendo fra le braccia costosi fucili intarsiati muniti di cannocchiali .
Uno con la tuta appoggio a terra il kalashnikov, stacco il rilevatore e lo avvicino ai cervi abbattuti. Scosse la testa quando lesse il numero apparso sul display.
Per ultimo scese un giovane particolarmente ben vestito . Non doveva avere ancora trent' aimi. Ai piedi portava scarpe italiane fatte a mano e il cappotto di cachemire si intonava alla sciarpa. Si guardo attorno e noto subito i lupi, che non si erano mossi di un millimetre e osservavano con curiosita gli uomini che stavano scuoiando i cervi. Zosim Kataev penso che i lupi di Cernobyl' non avevano piu paura dell'uomo. Si guardo bene dall'avvertire gli altri della loro presenza. Non vedeva l'ora che la battuta terminasse per dedicarsi al vero motivo che lo aveva portato a Pripjat'.

ka, a scorgere i lupi. I cacciatori imbracciarono i kalashnikov ansiosi di aprire il fuoco, ma Vitaly Zaytsev, che tutti chia mavano pakhan, alzo la mano.
- I lupi meritano rispetto. Sono coraggiosi, -disse in tono solenne estraendo un revolver dalla giacca . - E assomigliano maledettamente ai cani degli sbirri.
Tutti, eccetto Kataev, sghignazzarono di gusto, impugnan
do le pistole .Avanzarono verso i lupi, che continuarono a ri manere immobili fino a quando ilpakhan non prese la mira e tiro ilgrilletto, fallendo ilbersaglio di almeno un metro. Solo allora gli animali iniziarono ad allontanarsi, trotterellando con calma lunge la strada che portava all'uscita del parco.
L'inseguimento non duro a lungo. I lupi si inoltrarono fra le vie di un vicino quartiere e si infilarono ordinatamen te nell'androne di una scuola. «La loro tana», penso Zosim Kataev . Da quando gli abitanti erano stati evacuati dopo l'incidente alla centrale nucleare, la natura aveva iniziato a riprendersi la cittá. Centimetro dopo centimetro. Erano molti gli animale che avevano scelto di vivere nei palazzi abbandonati. Quando era venuta la prima volta, la sus guida, uno dei pochi che aveva deciso di tornare a Pripjat, gli aveve raccontato divertito che aveva dovuto sloggiare dal salotto una famigliola di orsi.
Translation - English The wolves passed beneath the large observation wheel, moving downwind towards the bustle of the dodgems. They ran fast and sure through the tall grass that was beginning to turn yellow in preparation for the arrival of autumn. The yellow would soon turn to a manic shade of red like the tree trunks, and then dark red, like clotted blood and like the rust that covered the remains of the scrap metal at Luna Park. Only the snow would take pity on that abandoned place, covering it for long months in a pure white blanket.
The wolves crouched between the old dodgems watching the deer drinking water out of a large basin. Once upon a time it must have been a fountain that sprayed long arcs of water into the air. Every so often, the stags lifted their heads, which were adorned with long antlers, and smelt the air to check for predators, but their nostrils were filled with a westerly breeze, heavy with the smells of the ghost town of Pripjat.
Suddenly, all the animals froze and pricked up their ears. A dull rumble was rapidly getting closer. Three four-wheel drives carrying armed men burst into the square. Shouting, laughing and gunfire. Three deer went down. The others fled quickly, pursued by bullets. The vehicles stopped and the men jumped out. Most of them were wearing military camouflage and were armed with submachine guns and pistols that peeked out from their belts. Geiger counters hung from their jackets. They didn’t look at all like hunters. Neither did the men who had just got out of the new, expensive pick-up, sporting authentic, elegant English clothing and holding expensive engraved guns fitted out with telescopes.
One of them, dressed in a tracksuit, put down his Kalashnikov, took out a Geiger counter and held it next to one of the fallen deer. He shook his head when he saw the read out.
Lastly, a particularly well dressed young man got out of one of the cars. He couldn’t have been older than thirty. He wore handmade Italian shoes, and a cashmere coat that matched his scarf. He looked around and noticed the wolves straight away. They had not moved a millimetre during all of this, and were looking curiously at the men, who were now skinning the deer. Zosim Kataev thought to himself how the wolves of Chernobyl no longer feared man either. He didn’t alert the others to the wolves’ presence. He couldn’t wait for the hunt to be over so he could dedicate himself to the real reason he had come to Pripjat.
It was one of the drivers, sent to get vodka, who noticed the wolves. The hunters hoisted their Kalashnikovs, anxious to open fire, but Vitaly Zaytsev, who everyone called Pakhan, raised a hand.
‘Wolves deserve respect, they’re brave,’ he said solemnly, pulling out a revolver from his jacket. ‘But they look like damned police dogs’.
Everyone except Kataev sneered along with him and gripped their pistols. They moved towards the wolves who remained frozen until the pakhan took aim and pulled the trigger, missing his target by at least a metre. Only now did the animals begin to move away, trotting calmly along the road that led to the park’s exit.
The pursuit didn’t last long. The wolves moved through the neighbouring streets and filed into the entrance hall of a school in an orderly manner.
‘Their den,’ thought Zosim Kataev to himself. Since the inhabitants were evacuated after the accident at the nuclear plant, nature had begun to reclaim the city, centimetre by centimetre. Many animals had chosen to live in the abandoned buildings. The first time he had come here, his guide, who was one of the few who had decided to return to Pripjat, had told him the funny story of how he had had to evict a family of bears from his living room.

Source text - Italian Lui è parecchio goloso, e resiste poco alla tentazione del cioccolato fondente con le nocciole, in barba ad ogni preoccupazione per la linea. E lo stesso dicasi per il gelato al cioccolato. Quando è in sede, ogni settimana va a Brindisi con gli amici, per mangiare la pizza. Preferisce la “marinara” e l’accompagna con la birra, per lui una scelta quasi sacrilega. Amabile conversatore, Maci tiene di frequente relazioni sulla viticoltura in Puglia, in varie sedi, dall’Istituto della Vite alle Camere di Commercio di Lecce, Brindisi e Taranto, nonché alle varie facoltà di Agraria. Parla solitamente “a braccio”, sulla base di pochi appunti in prevalenza fatti di cifre sulla produzione, il riscontro dei mercati, l’export. “Mi hanno sollecitato più volte a tenere dei corsi all’università. Ma non è il mio mestiere. Io credo di saper fare il vino e anche di poter dire la mia su qualche questione. Da qui a montare in cattedra, però, ce ne passa.... Piuttosto accolgo in cantina gruppi di studenti, e mi trattengo a lungo con loro. Trovo assai stimolante il confronto con chi si prepara a vivere il mondo del vino. Devo dire anzi che non manca qualche quesito, sul quale scopri di non aver riflettuto abbastanza”. La sua bravura consiste soprattutto nel non lasciarsi prendere la mano dall’argomento e di non cedere a un linguaggio tecnico. Insomma, con lui, antociani ed enzimi, solfiti e lieviti, non trovano molto spazio, se non quello per chiarirne le singole funzioni. Altra cosa, invece, è il rapporto col vigneto e le fasi dei vari interventi, a cominciare dalla potatura. “E’ un’operazione solo in apparenza semplice. E invece richiede perizia e grande esperienza. Il taglio deve essere netto, senza ferire la pianta. Altrimenti la lacerazione favorisce l’insediamento di batteri e parassiti, con danni imprevedibili. Anche le forbici hanno un ruolo importante ... ” L’andamento dei suoi interventi è questo. Chiaro e convincente, comprensibile anche per chi non ha alcuna confidenza col vino. In più, si carica di particolare suggestione ogni qualvolta c’è un riferimento al passato. E’ il caso della pigiatura, che Angelo rievoca come una festa corale, un rito che si consumava attraverso un rapporto diretto e fisico con l’uva. E perché io ne abbia un’immagine concreta, mi passa un bel po’ di foto d’epoca. E’ una galleria di uomini forti, ma anche di donne che sollevano con pudore il lembo della veste e di bambini che sguazzano felici. Tutto un mondo che qui ha trovato per secoli la sua consacrazione. C’è un’affermazione che Maci ha ripreso più volte, nel corso dei nostri incontri. Anzi due. Che pur nella loro diversità s’integrano perfettamente. “Per coltivare bene un vigneto, bisogna prima coltivare l’uomo. Il vino esiste perché c’è chi cura la terra e l’uva, giorno dopo giorno. E oggi non sempre il lavoro – ma direi l’amore e l’esperienza dei padri – viene raccolta dai figli”.. La seconda riflessione riguarda la vite. Che dà l’uva perché deve riprodursi. Obbedisce, in effetti, a un ciclo biologico, legato soprattutto all’ambiente e al clima. L’enologo interviene quindi su qualcosa di vivo, e questo porta ad escludere ogni obiettivo di perfezione. Perché, come avviene per gli uomini, spesso qualche piccolo difetto diventa distintivo della personalità. E questo vale anche per il vino. Provo a ricostruire un ritratto dell’uomo che non sia estraneo alla vita della Cantina. Ma Angelo è inarrestabile. La carica di entusiasmo e di fede nel rivivere quegli anni, lo porta a una narrazione intensa ed emotiva, e perciò tanto più accattivante. A sorprendermi in questa sorta di autobiografia, è il fatto che qualunque progetto portato avanti in questi anni, non è mai riconducibile strettamente alla sua persona, ma nasce e matura in quel clima di largo consenso e di fattiva collaborazione che è alla base delle Due Palme. Ammetto che ho qualche difficoltà nel credere in una partecipazione tanto corale, ma Angelo sembra ignorare l’uso dell’IO a vantaggio del NOI, per cui ogni iniziativa va ricondotta a merito della cooperativa. Anche quando reca con estrema evidenza il segno della sua capacità d’impresa. Angelo Maci è un bell’uomo, e ha coscienza di esserlo. Dotato di una naturale simpatia ed eleganza, non manca di continuare a piacere, a dispetto dell’età. Nei tanti eventi che vedono protagonista le Cantine Due Palme, non rinuncia mai alla presenza di uno staff di belle fanciulle. Vino e donne. Un binomio che fa storia da sempre.
I NUOVI MERCATI
Non basta fare un buon vino. Nè accreditarne l’immagine e la qualità, grazie alla stretta filiazione da un territorio privilegiato. Bisogna venderlo. E questo, quando siamo nell’ordine dei nove milioni di bottiglie delle Due Palme, non è operazione da poco. Intanto, perché ci sono da pagare le quote a oltre mille, i quali possono anche tollerare un po’ di ritardo - se gli incassi sono serviti per qualche intervento alle cantine - ma niente di più. Senza contare che l’accumulo di giacenze crea non pochi problemi, specie in fatto di spazio. Così l’imperativo categorico è vendere. Nel più breve tempo possibile e alle migliori condizioni. “Il binomio qualità-mercato può rappresentare la sintesi della mia filosofia. Noi abbiamo iniziato nel ’95 la fase d’imbottigliamento, puntando ai mercati esteri per collocare i nostri vini. Un’impresa non facile, che oggi ci vede in testa fra i protagonisti del grande export vinicolo della Puglia. Si pensi che l’estero assorbe da anni la quasi totalità della nostra produzione”. Solo da qualche tempo – aggiunge Angelo Maci – le Due Palme hanno rivolto la loro attenzione anche al mercato interno. Prima la Puglia e poi via via Lazio, Lombardia, Campania, Umbria hanno conosciuto e apprezzato il Negroamaro e il Primitivo, ormai largamente presenti nella nostra migliore ristorazione. Ma non basta.La produzione della Cantina è tale da imporre un ulteriore allargamento dei mercati, attraverso i canali della grande distribuzione. Maturano così i primi contratti con i supermercati Esselunga, Penny Market, Auchan e Sma, una rete di vendita che merita ogni attenzione, visto che assorbe quasi il 70% del vino imbottigliato. L’apertura di questo nuovo sbocco è stata quantomai impegnativa per la Due Palme e ha richiesto tutta la capacità imprenditoriale di Maci. “Ho intuito che partire dalla bottiglia non ci avrebbe favorito. Occorreva che prima i nostri vini fossero conosciuti. E per fare questo, bisognava offrire ottima qualità a prezzi di forte richiamo. Abbiamo perciò optato per le confezioni in damigiane di vetro e pet da cinque litri, tenuto conto che esiste un florido mercato per questi formati. Una strategia che non ha mancato in breve di aprire la strada ai vini confezionati”. Alla grande distribuzione, la Cantina ha poi affiancato, in costante crescita, i suoi esclusivi punti di vendita, che hanno fatto registrare lo scorso anno un fatturato di circa due milioni di euro. Ma c’è di più. Ancora una volta le antenne di Maci hanno captato in anticipo la tendenza che vede in costante aumento le vendite sul web. Un fenomeno che in Europa è vicino al 10%, ma che da noi è ancora poco diffuso. “Così ci siamo organizzati con un nuovo sito internet, gradevole e funzionale, destinato a richiamare l’attenzione di appassionati e curiosi del mondo del vino. E’ uno strumento in linea con i tempi e con l’Europa”. Un discorso a sé merita il rapporto della Cantina con i mercati esteri. Anche perché rappresenta non solo lo sbocco tradizionale dell’azienda – che solo da qualche anno si è affacciata sulle piazze interne – ma incuriosisce per la scelta dei Paesi importatori di Negroamaro e Primitivo. Sorprende infatti che alle consolidate esportazioni in Germania, Regno Unito, Olanda, Svezia, Canada, si siano affiancate quelle con territori non solo lontani geograficamente, ma per civiltà, religione e costume di vita. Mi riferisco in particolare al Laos, alla Cambogia, al Vietnam, a Macao, alle Filippine. Tutti Paesi inconcepibili, appena qualche anno fa, come potenziali acquirenti di vini italiani. Anche per la scarsa confidenza che essi hanno col prodotto, quando addirittura non risulti del tutto sconosciuto. “Convengo che è stata un’operazione coraggiosa. Ma fare da pioniere mi è sempre piaciuto. Così ho ottenuto dal Consiglio il placet per questa iniziativa. Ripeto, esposta non solo all’incertezza degli esiti, ma anche a tutti i rischi connessi a un’esperienza senza precedenti. Valga per tutti, un solo dato. In Vietnam c’è un aggravio di tasse, imposte e dazi pari al 91% del prezzo della bottiglia. Eppure, a dispetto di un così forte balzello, le vendite sono in aumento, favorite dalla veloce crescita del Pil, che in quel Paese avanza in ragione del 7% all’anno”. Che il Vietnam acquisti i vini del Salento non è notizia da lasciar cadere. Sapevo della Francia, peraltro legata da una lunga gestione coloniale, della quale sopravvive anche un ristretto uso della lingua, ma di vini italiani nessuna traccia. Questo mi ha indotto a raccogliere qualche elemento sulle sorprendenti preferenze in fatto di vini dei Vietnamiti. E’ un popolo di oltre 87 milioni, che vanta una cucina ricca di ben cinquecento pietanze (dal pipistrello al cobra) e che ha sempre bevuto affianco al latte di cocco, il Ruo ran, un vino di riso nel quale viene calato un serpente tenuto a lungo sotto aceto. Pare che abbia non poche proprietà tonificanti. A questo si aggiunga il diffuso Buddismo (i cattolici sono solo il 10%) e un costume di vita che non ha niente di occidentale, a cominciare dall’uso di bere vino. Eppure, da un lato l’espansione dell’economia, e dall’altro l’azione intelligente dell’Ice, che ha realizzato un suggestivo sito web in lingua vietnamita, l’export dei nostri vini nel 2011 ha avuto un incremento del 26%. “Un fenomeno imprevedibile, anche alla luce delle più ottimistiche speranze. E altrettanto vale per gli altri Paesi del Sudest asiatico, fino al pianeta Cina. Un risultato che ci ha spinti a vedere in una nuova luce i canali della grande distribuzione sui mercati esteri. Un percorso difficile, disseminato di mille garanzie da offrire a fronte di tante limitazioni, ma che alla fine non ha mancato di dare i suoi frutti. Basti pensare che una nota insegna europea, che gestisce ben ottocento supermercati, ha scelto fra i vini pugliesi la produzione della Due Palme”. Si sta avviando a conclusione, intanto, e con buoni esiti, il progressivo allargamento del mercato americano, dove la Cantina di Cellino San Marco si prepara a coprire un ruolo di primo piano nel comparto dei vini del Salento. Una politica alla quale continua a dare il suo contributo il Consorzio Puglia Best Wine, che coinvolge sette fra le maggiori imprese vitivinicole e il cui obiettivo è appunto quello di accreditare l’eccellenza del territorio sui mercati extraeuropei. “Sono iniziative che richiedono tempo e fiducia, e che noi viviamo sempre con grande partecipazione, com’è nello spirito e nella coscienza dei nostri soci. La forza della Cantina continua ad essere quella della sua comunità. Senza l’appoggio convinto della nostra gente, ogni aspettativa andrebbe delusa...”. Questo, ad onta del fatto che le cooperative presenti sul territorio hanno subito una contrazione che si aggira intorno all’11%. Il fenomeno ha però avuto un riflesso positivo, perché ha favorito un processo di accorpamento delle varie strutture, superando così quella frammentazione che in passato ha nociuto non poco al comparto del vino pugliese. Anche in questo caso le Due Palme non hanno mancato di confermarsi leader fra le imprese del Salento, inglobando nel 2012 la San Gaetano di Lizzano, che è entrata così a pieno titolo nella cooperativa di Cellino. “La gestione dei mercati esteri richiede una sistematica presenza sulle varie piazze. Non è sufficiente affidarsi a un buon distributore. E’ una questione di incontri, di degustazioni, di contatti con giornalisti e buyers. Bisogna insomma che il vino sia protagonista, nel migliore contesto possibile. Questo spiega la partecipazione della nostra Cantina non solo alle grandi fiere internazionali, dal Belgio all’Albania, ma anche a tutte quelle iniziative che l’Ocm predispone a favore del Consorzio, per la presentazione dei nostri vini a Hong Kong, San Paolo del Brasile, Shanghai”. Il quadro delle potenzialità mercantili della Puglia, e in particolare della Due Palme, è piuttosto esauriente. Anche se devo constatare che oltre il numero delle bottiglie, i tempi di consegna, i documenti di viaggio e il sistema di pagamento, non mi è dato di sapere. E invece un cambogiano che beva Primitivo o un laotiano che accompagni il pasto con un eccellente Negroamaro, continua a intrigarmi. Così non rinuncio a sapere qualcosa di più si questi Paesi, da sempre del tutto estranei al consumo di vino, e solo da qualche tempo al centro dell’attenzione delle nostre maggiori Cantine. CAMBOGIA Non è facile capire come il vino – e mi riferisco anche a quello cileno e australiano – abbia potuto aprirsi una strada fra popoli e territori per tradizione così lontani da questo tipo di consumo. Non a caso in Cambogia – oltre quattordici milioni di abitanti – è esclusa la presenza a tavola di qualunque bevanda, a cominciare dall’acqua. Così il vino, se tale può chiamarsi, è ricavato dal riso e viene servito in vasi di terra. La stessa origine ha il whisky. Qui, d’altra parte, tutto nasce dal riso, anche il caffè. Eppure, in un contesto del genere non manca un personaggio come Chan Thai Chhoeung, il quale a trecento chilometri dalla capitale Phnom Penh, pianta nel Duemila le prime viti di Cabernet Sauvignon e di Syrah, favorito dal consenso che la famiglia reale ha sempre mostrato verso il vino. Il clima qui offre solo due stagioni, entrambe molto calde, di cui una secca da novembre a maggio, e l’altra piovosa, da giugno a ottobre. In cambio, la temperatura favorisce la rapida maturazione dell’uva e quindi due raccolti. Mister Chan non fa più di diecimila bottiglie, ma bastano a conferirgli un notevole prestigio. L’interesse per i vini europei, credo non sia estraneo alla lunga stagione che ha visto la Cambogia colonia francese, come gran parte del Sudest asiatico. Sia pure limitati a quegli anni e circoscritti agli ambienti diplomatici e agli europei presenti nella capitale, i grandi Bordeaux non hanno mancato di lasciare il loro segno, ed è quell’eredità culturale che oggi sta facendo da apripista anche ai nostri vini. Il Paese è uscito da una lunga e dolorosa esperienza, che va dall’invasione vietnamita al terrore dei Khmer Rossi. Solo da un ventennio ha raggiunto una stabilità democratica, con una monarchia parlamentare. “E’ un mercato – aggiunge Angelo Maci – che richiede più degli altri il giusto approccio. La Francia ha lasciato una traccia non trascurabile, e il mito dei Bordeaux è ancora vivo. Tuttavia l’Italia sta dando buone prove. E la Puglia, in particolare, grazie all’attività del Consorzio, si sta ritagliando uno spazio di tutto rispetto. Il resto, come sempre, è un fatto di qualità e di promozione”. VIETNAM La lunga e sanguinosa guerra ha fatto del Paese il più popolare del Sudest asiatico, fra Cina, Laos e Cambogia. Un territorio difficile, intricato, spesso di non facile accesso al di là delle due fasce costiere che a est e a sud si affacciano sul Mare della Cina. Circa novanta milioni di abitanti, per la quasi totalità buddisti (i cattolici sono solo il 10% e costituiscono la maggiore comunità dopo le Filippine), una ristretta sopravvivenza della lingua francese, eredità dell’epoca coloniale, il Vietnam vanta una cucina che si dice ricca di cinquecento piatti tradizionali, in prevalenza a base di carni, che vanno dal pipistrello al cobra. Pietanza base è ovviamente il riso bianco. Con le bevande, la situazione si fa un tantino più complicata. Quella nazionale è il latte di cocco, ma anche il vino. E qui non so fino a qual punto possa definirsi tale. Si chiama Ruon ran, ed è ricavato dal riso, nel quale viene immesso un serpente tenuto a lungo sotto aceto. Pare abbia notevoli proprietà tonificanti, e di sicuro piace non poco ai vietnamiti, al pari del the. In questa realtà, consolidata da secoli di storia, pensare a una presenza dei nostri vini è quasi un’utopia. E invece la veloce crescita del Pil – siamo sulla media del 7% annuo – offre non poche opportunità a quelle imprese che sappiano adeguarsi a un mercato in continuo movimento. Certo, il vino è un prodotto emergente in questo contesto, al pari della birra e dei liquori. Anche se la crescita (i vini italiani hanno fatto registrare nel 2011 un incremento del 26%) è ostacolata da un aggravio di tasse, imposte e dazi, che è pari al 91% del prezzo della bottiglia. “Il dato che ci interessa – spiega Angelo Maci – è che questo costante incremento del mercato riguarda soprattutto vini non solo di buona qualità, ma prodotti in determinati territori e da vitigni di antica tradizione. E’ una domanda che incontra perfettamente la nostra offerta. Negroamaro e Primitivo non hanno avversari su questo terreno. E la Due Palme si sta facendo valere. Aggiunga che l’ufficio Ice di Hochiminh City ha realizzato un sito web in lingua vietnamita, dedicato al vino italiano. Un supporto che ci favorisce non poco...”. LAOS In apparenza è il meno stimolante dei mercati emergenti nel Sudest asiatico. E invece, favorito da tasse d’importazione assai contenute – rispetto a quelle gravosissime del Vietnam e della Thailandia – il Laos, a dispetto della sua scarsa popolazione (appena sei milioni) si sta rivelando fra le piazze più interessanti. Ancora una volta il legame col vino è da ricondurre al colonialismo francese. Intendo vino in senso europeo, da uva. Perché di quello prodotto con zenzero o con foglie di palma da zucchero, i laotiani sono stati sempre larghi consumatori. A non considerare quello ricavato dal riso – come in tutta quest’area dell’Asia – che al pari del whisky, il diffuso Lao lao, bevuto liscio, costituiscono le bevande nazionali. Un posto a sé merita il the cinese, da bere a inizio di ogni pasto. Che a differenza della vicina Thailandia non è costituito da pietanze piccanti. La cucina tradizionale, povera di grassi, privilegia infatti il pesce e i frutti tropicali, soprattutto mango e ananas, che vengono accompagnati di solito dalla birra, un prodotto che fa concorrenza al vino europeo, anche per il costo assai più contenuto. “Il Laos non fa eccezione - sottolinea Angelo Maci – perché anche qui si privilegiano vini tipici. E’ inutile proporre vitigni internazionali, visto che la concorrenza di quelli cileni e australiani è per noi insostenibile. Ma il Nuovo mondo non ha il Nebbiolo, il Sangiovese, il Moscato, per non citare solo il nostro Negroamaro. Ed è su questo terreno che dobbiamo batterci. Non va trascurato che la classe medio-alta del Laos continua a preferire vini italiani e francesi”. FILIPPINE Più che un arcipelago – sono oltre settemila le isole – è un continente. Poco meno di cento milioni di abitanti, è fra i Paesi più popolati al mondo, e uno dei tanti paradisi fiscali. Di religione cattolica, (le Filippine sono un’antica colonia spagnola, come testimonia il nome legato a Filippo II) hanno alle spalle una tradizione che non è estranea alla Cina, alla Malesia e a tutti i territori a Sudest del vecchio Impero. A cominciare dalla cucina, dove però le tracce spagnole hanno ceduto il passo al gusto orientale, specie nelle diffuse cotture con aceto o limone, o nelle bevande a base di cocco fermentato. Le pietanze, in prevalenza a base di pesce, sono in genere accompagnate da Bianchi di estrazione internazionale, provenienti dal Cile o dall’Australia, che sono anche quelli più largamente presenti sul mercato. Il 60% delle vendite di vino, infatti, ha luogo nei supermercati di Manila e di Cebu, dove il diverso livello economico degli imprenditori orienta la scelta verso i vini del Nuovo mondo, o verso quelli europei. Nella capitale, Manila, gli importatori non sono molti, anche perché sul commercio dei prodotti esteri incide una tassazione complessa e gravosa. In ogni caso, il consumo di vino è piuttosto modesto. Solo Shanghay, la più occidentale delle città cinesi, arriva a 2,15 litri pro capite all’anno. Anche se tenuto conto del numero di abitanti, questo dato si traduce in oltre ottocento milioni di bottiglie. Certo, le grandi metropoli – Londra, New York, Los Angeles o Tokyo – hanno un consumo medio di 6-7 litri annuo, ma dietro ci sono ben altri trascorsi. “Nelle Filippine - osserva Maci – a contrastare i nostri vini è soltanto la Francia, la cui presenza sui mercati dell’estremo Oriente ha ben altri precedenti. Un’etichetta come Bordeaux non è facile da battere, anche perché ai novecentomila ettari del suo territorio, noi possiamo opporre ristrette realtà di poche migliaia di ettari, e per giunta poco conosciute. Le Langhe, il Chianti, o il Salento dicono ben poco a quelle latitudini. Di qui la necessità di una costante politica dei Consorzi di Tutela e l’impegno di tutti i produttori per accreditare i nostri vini. Le potenzialità del mercato sono interessanti, ma richiedono risposte adeguate.” HONG KONG In un contesto così lontano da quello europeo, Hong Kong occupa un posto a sé. Mercato leader per tutta l’Asia (transitano di qui i vini diretti in Cina, grazie alla presenza di oltre duemila importatori), l’ex colonia inglese offre da qualche anno insospettabili opportunità per i vini europei. E questo grazie a due eventi, difficili da accostare, ma che si rivelano entrambi straordinari protagonisti di una nuova stagione. A cominciare dal bunker che, costruito nella seconda Guerra mondiale per accogliere un gigantesco deposito di costruzioni, è diventato enoteca e wine storage. Una struttura che non ha termini di confronto, perché superato un lungo corridoio con muri di forte spessore in cemento armato, bisogna scendere per ben ventiquattro metri. Qui, con molta cura e tanta sapienza, una galleria di grandi vini e di preziose annate ha preso il posto di armi e proiettili. Una conversione di certo imprevedibile e coraggiosa, ma non azzardata, se si pensa che Hong Kong con la sua lunga storia di colonia britannica ha avuto sempre un buon feeling con i vini di alta qualità. E veniamo al secondo evento. Che ha fato registrare una vera e propria esplosione del mercato vinicolo (con un’impennata nel 2012 di oltre il 240 per cento) e che certamente non è riconducibile ai trascorsi inglesi e alla nascita di questo originale wine storage. Il boom è legato all’abolizione nel 2008 della tassa sull’importazione degli alcolici, che ha aperto un insospettabile sbocco ai vini europei, Francia e Italia in testa. La svolta ha avuto immediati riflessi anche nella grande distribuzione. Negli ultimi cinque anni sono nate ben trenta aziende, che offrono un vasto e differenziato stoccaggio di vini. Fra i quali, se figurano anzitutto le grandi cantine dai nomi consacrati, non mancano quei lotti rari, per etichetta e per annata, che stimolano la partecipazione alle aste di appassionati collezionisti cinesi. L’antico e consolidato primato di New York per questo genere di gare è ormai monopolio di Hong Kong, grazie anche al sorgere di apposite strutture che garantiscono il controllo non solo della temperatura e dell’umidità, ma di ogni forma di sicurezza per la conservazione dei vini più preziosi. Dalla caduta dei dazi d’importazione, la Due Palme è presente ad Hong Kong con un’accurata selezione dei suoi vini, particolarmente legati al territorio. “E’ un mercato, come quello più propriamente cinese – precisa Maci - al quale stiamo da tempo dedicando ogni impegno. La concorrenza è agguerrita, ma noi puntiamo ancora una volta sull’identità e sulla qualità dei nostri vini. La Due Palme è in espansione, e non possiamo consentirci di perdere questa partita. La Cina, d’altra parte, ha bisogno di comprare all’estero, anche per spendere gli yuan, che rischiano di diventare una moneta troppo forte e quindi creare non poche difficoltà alle esportazioni. Credo sia questa la politica del governo cinese, e sarà bene tenerne conto”. MACAO Oltre quattro secoli di sovranità portoghese non hanno lasciato significative ed evidenti tracce a Macao, piccolo territorio di due isole e una penisola, che si allunga compatta nel Mare Cinese meridionale. La storia sopravvive qua e là, ma è difficile avvertirne la presenza, sommersa com’è da una folla di cinesi (rappresentano il 95% della popolazione) e da un’orgia di trentacinque casinò distribuiti a piene mani. Perché questa è oggi Macao. Oltre cinquemila tavoli da gioco, sempre attivi, e introiti sei volte superiori a quelli di Las Vegas. Un fenomeno in costante espansione, da quando nel 2002 il governo cinese ha liberalizzato il gioco d’azzardo. Ne consegue che il mercato dell’ex colonia è all’insegna di un lusso sfrenato, dove l’alta moda, la gioielleria più preziosa e le auto esclusive tentano ad ogni passo i fortunati ospiti. In questo quadro non poteva mancare il vino. Anche per la forte crescita dell’economia, che nel 2012 si è attestata oltre il 7% rispetto all’anno precedente. Un dato che ha finito per avere i suoi riflessi anche sul consumo di vino. Ma di quale vino si tratta? I trascorsi portoghesi e la recente ondata di benessere hanno portato a scelte assai selettive in fatto di etichette. Ne è prova il ricco building nel cuore di Macao, che ospita non solo ristoranti di grande notorietà (fra cui il nostro Don Alfonso), ma la più ricca raccolta di vini al mondo. Oltre duecentomila bottiglie, per il 70% francesi, di celebrate cantine e preziose annate. E allora? In apparenza, sembra non esserci spazio per i nostri vini. E invece non va dimenticato che a Macao, come a Pechino e a Shanghai, si concentra il più alto tasso di consumo di vino nel mondo. E questo apre spazi imprevedibili al futuro dei vini italiani. Piuttosto, il problema non sta solo nell’essere presenti sul mercato, quanto nel far conoscere il meglio della nostra produzione, con particolare riguardo a quella legata a territori di antica e consolidata tradizione. Insomma, ancora una volta, si tratta di mettere insieme un’esauriente informazione e di diffonderla con il linguaggio e le immagini più suggestive. Perché non va dimenticato che a Macao i vini arrivano anche attraverso la riesportazione da Hong Kong, e quindi alleggeriti di ogni imposta daziaria. “Vanno lodate due felici iniziative che hanno favorito non poco l’apertura del mercato di Macao ai nostri vini. Mi riferisco – precisa Angelo Maci – ai corsi di formazione sui vini italiani, gestiti in loco dall’Ice. Uno straordinario strumento per una conoscenza non superficiale della nostra produzione. A questo si aggiungano gli ormai storici rapporti Vinitaly-China, che in oltre dieci anni hanno bene accreditato il vino italiano in quelle terre. Resta ancora molto da fare, ma il traguardo è vicino. L’Italia e il mio Salento hanno tutte le carte in regola per vincere la partita”.

Dario Stefano Senatore della Repubblica già Assessore Risorse Agroalimentari Regione Puglia È una emozione per me elaborare un piccolo pensiero per Angelo Maci, come manifestazione di un sentimento di gratitudine per la passione con cui svolge quotidianamente il suo lavoro. Perché è una passione che contagia, è una passione che nutre la legittima ambizione personale ma, nel contempo, irradia di effetti benefici tutto un territorio. Angelo Maci è una delle prime persone che ho conosciuto appena chiamato, nel luglio 2009, alla responsabilità di questa mia entusiasmante esperienza assessorile: fui subito travolto dall’entusiasmo e felicemente toccato dai brillanti successi ottenuti da Cantine Due Palme. Una impressione riconfermata nella frequentazione istituzionale che continuiamo a coltivare, dai cui posso trarre tre elementi di riflessione che mi piace immaginare come utile contributo ad un percorso di ulteriore sviluppo della nostra agricoltura. Il primo, come dicevo, la grande passione nel far bene le cose e sempre con l'orgoglio di essere dentro ad una grande tradizione che è tornata tratto identitario della nostra Regione. Questo approccio è linfa essenziale per un impegno ambizioso in agricoltura. Se non ami follemente ciò che fai, tanto più in agricoltura, difficilmente puoi avere la pazienza di attendere, a volte anche a lungo, che giungano i risultati desiderati. È il motore che alimenta la costanza, la caparbietà nel non mollare, nel perseguire un sogno magari a tratti ritenuto troppo ambizioso, nell’affrontare la durezza dei sacrifici e, come credo in ogni grande esperienza, di scontrarsi anche a muso duro, direttamente o indirettamente, con ostacoli e piccoli fallimenti. Il secondo elemento è nel progetto stesso su cui si è impegnato Angelo Maci: quel modello cooperativistico che funziona perché sa mettere insieme i punti di forza dei singoli, superando "assieme" le criticità e gli ostacoli che, da soli, diventerebbero insormontabili. Un moderno modello di cooperazione che sa recuperare terreno aggredendo uno dei punti di debolezza storici del nostro sistema di imprese agroalimentari, e cioè la eccessiva frammentazione dei soggetti impegnati nella produzione primaria, attraverso la sfida della innovazione a 360 gradi. Cantina Due Palme è la case history per dimostrare un metodo, un modello organizzativo, che può aiutare il nostro comparto a divenire più competitivo. Un modello a cui personalmente guardo con sempre maggiore attenzione e convincimento come fattore di successo anche per le altre principali filiere regionali. Infine, la esperienza di Angelo Maci ci dimostra un’altra cosa essenziale: che per vincere la sfida della modernità non può bastare la sola produzione primaria. Da li si può - si deve - partire, ma non è più sufficiente. In un mondo globalizzato, in cui purtroppo le regole spesso sembrano valere per alcuni e per altri no, in cui i target di riferimento sono tanti ed in continua evoluzione, è evidente che non può bastare impegnarsi sulla qualità della produzione primaria, ma diviene fondamentale (se parliamo di vino) associarvi una robusta competenza enologica che aiuti sulla tenuta della rotta qualità, insieme alla capacità culturale e organizzativa di comunicare e dialogare con i mercati. Ecco allora che, nella esperienza di Angelo Maci e Cantine Due Palme, anche il modello cooperativistico si svecchia di quella lanugine nostalgica, smette gli abiti del passato per indossare una grisaglia che non è effimera apparenza ma emblema di una agricoltura nuova che certamente non rinnega le sue radici. Ma anzi sa irrorare con la innovazione e la ricerca il passato e le tradizioni produttive che appartengono al dna delle nostre genti e delle nostre comunità e che, come l’esperienza di Angelo Maci e di Cantine Due Palme ci conferma, può divenire prospettiva di crescita futura, per il territorio e per le nuove generazioni.

Un augurio che estendo anche ai tuoi onoratissimi 40 anni di carriera alla guida della Cantina Due Palme. Un contributo, quello che hai brillantemente fornito durante gli ultimi quattro decenni, di straordinaria portata come dimostra il fatto che la Cantina Due Palme sia diventata, proprio grazie al tuo impegno, uno dei maggiori poli cooperativistici di tutta la Puglia e del Sud Italia. Un punto di riferimento per tutti i produttori di vino italiani e un esempio vincente da imitare per coloro i quali intendono valorizzare con successo il Made in Italy agroalimentare nel mondo. Sacrificio, dedizione e passione. Sono questi gli elementi vincenti che hai portato avanti negli anni. Una scelta di vita importante, al servizio di un territorio ricco di molteplici valori materiali e immateriali che ne ha saputo rafforzare l'attrattività e le chances di sviluppo di fronte ad un mercato diventato sempre più globalizzato. Una scelta di vita che, sono estremamente convinto, continuerai a portare avanti con successo. Le sfide che attendono il nostro agroalimentare sono ancora tante e difficili. Ed è in tal senso che la tua esperienza rappresenta un elemento vincente. Un fattore di successo per tutti i produttori italiani che diventa ancora più strategico di fronte ad un mercato caratterizzato da profonda incertezza, e alla necessità di ricercare nuove forme per essere più competitivi. Nel rinnovarti i miei più sinceri auguri, ti saluto con stima e affetto.
Paolo Bruni Presidente Centro Servizi Ortofrutticoli Provo a parlare di Angelo Maci anche se per farlo occorrerebbero doti narrative non comuni. Angelo sa conciliare più di ogni altro la forma con la sostanza, la concretezza con l’estetica, il business con la socialità, il grande impegno lavorativo con i momenti di necessario piacere. E’ uno di quei gentiluomini che ormai non esistono quasi più. Le sue ineguagliabili doti imprenditoriali, unite all’altruismo che lo contraddistingue e la generosità che riserva al prossimo, fanno di Lui un vero uomo di valore. Lo conobbi quasi 10 anni fa a Roma quando io assunsi la Presidenza nazionale di Fedagri-Confcooperative. L’empatia fu immediata e credo reciproca, poi negli anni ho potuto scoprire le sue numerose qualità di enologo, viticoltore, cooperatore, dirigente avveduto e capace di elaborare visioni strategiche per la propria azienda e per coloro che vi operano. Altra caratteristica degna di particolare merito che riconosco ad Angelo è l’amore per la sua terra. Quel Salento che trasuda di profumi per Lui indispensabili dai quali non potrebbe mai separarsi. Per il suo territorio e per le genti che lo abitano, Angelo ha fatto davvero tanto, riuscendo a trasformare i contadini di un tempo negli imprenditori-soci della Cantine Due Palme di oggi, che come tutti sappiamo è la sua vera famiglia. Nei vigneti e tra le botti della Cantina Angelo si muove come il leone nella savana. Per l’ammirazione che nutro di Lui, mi sono sempre reso disponibile ogni volta che mi ha invitato in Puglia o alle tante iniziative organizzate al Vinitaly di Verona, la manifestazione vitivinicola più importante al mondo dove Angelo e la Due Palme sono tra i leader più apprezzati e rispettati. Ricordo perfettamente l’anno, e non fu l’unica volta, in cui Cantine Due Palme vinse il Premio Speciale Vinitaly. Dopo la premiazione ci recammo allo stand con tutte le Autorità di protocollo, Angelo ci accolse lento e gentile con la naturalezza di chi è abituato a vincere ! Dopo averci fatto accomodare e posato i calici sul tavolo iniziò a parlare della bottiglia di “Selvarossa”, che teneva orgogliosamente tra le mani, con la stessa narrativa con la quale Dante descriveva Beatrice nella Divina Commedia. Tutti rimanemmo rapiti dalla descrizione della tracciabilità che parte dalla vigna passando dalla cantina per arrivare alla bottiglia. Quando Angelo aprì la bottiglia, quel vino prodotto da uve negroamaro e malvasia nera, sprigionò al nostro naso i profumi accattivanti di confettura di ciliegie e note di vaniglia. Io a quel punto commisi un errore davvero imperdonabile nella forma e nella sostanza perché osai dire: “Scusa Angelo, hai mica una bottiglia di bollicine che io preferisco bere spumante?” Mentre lo dicevo pensai che forse non mi avrebbe mai più invitato… Invece Angelo dopo un solo attimo di esitazione rispose “ Quest’anno non riesco ad accontentarti ma il prossimo anno avrai il vino per i tuoi gusti” Io naturalmente pensai che era una risposta diplomatica, ma quando l’anno successivo tornai a trovarlo al Vinitaly, con mio grande stupore mi servì lo spumante Melarosa dicendomi : “Ecco Paolo, queste sono le bollicine che ti avevo promesso!!”. Quella fu l’ennesima conferma che Angelo da galantuomo quale è mantiene sempre la parola data . Buon Compleanno Mister Due Palme !! Domenico Mennitti Giornalista già Parlamentare europeo e Sindaco di Brindisi Caro Presidente ti sono molto grato per avermi offerto l’occasione di sottolineare due momenti significativi che hai vissuto da cittadino e da imprenditore. Il primo dato che merita d’essere sottolineato è il compimento del settantesimo anno di età. Sembra una ricorrenza privata da festeggiare serenamente in famiglia. Quando però si procede assorbiti dall’impegno quotidiano, il compleanno non riguarda più soltanto la vicenda di una persona, specie se - come nel tuo caso - questa è l’anima di iniziative importanti nelle quali sono stati coinvolti altri uomini e altre famiglie, diciamo pure un’intera comunità. Settantanni sono quasi tre quarti di secolo collocato dentro un’era di grande innovazione e di rapido sviluppo. Per cui oggi non è solo il bilancio personale che tracci con il segno positivo, avendo dato al tuo lavoro un forte segnale di creatività. Prendo atto del successo delle “Cantine Due Palme” che sotto la spinta dell’entusiasmo tuo e dei tuoi collaboratori costituisce un patrimonio nel mondo, interlocutrice di altre nazioni e di altre scuole con le quali competiamo e spesso primeggiamo nelle scelte dei consumatori. Di questo slancio operativo i cittadini di Cellino San Marco e delle aree limitrofe del Brindisino ti sono profondamente grati.

Le Cantine Due Palme
PRIMA ALETTA
Angelo Maci è nato nel ’43 a Cellino San Marco, provincia di Brindisi, terza generazione di una famiglia che ha fatto storia nella tradizione vitivinicola del Salento.
Inizia la sua attività, prima dei trentanni, nella cantina del nonno Ettamiano. In breve, provvede all’ampliamento della struttura e dà vita alla Vinicola San Marco.
Nel ’79 costruisce una nuova cantina, l’Eurovini, ubicata nell’attuale sede della Due Palme. La nuova azienda si occupa della concentrazione dei mosti e della vendita all’estero di vini, attraverso navi-cisterne.
Per ben quattordici anni – dall’ ’82 al ’96 – copre la carica di Presidente della Cassa Rurale e Artigiana di Cellino.
Intanto – dopo aver acquistato altri vigneti per circa sessanta ettari – fonda nell’ 89 le Cantine Due Palme, società cooperativa, di cui sarà presidente ed enologo. In questo ruolo convince il Consiglio di Amministrazione ad affiancare al vino sfuso quello imbottigliato. Siamo nel ’95, e l’export della Cantina, si attesta intorno al 98% della produzione.
Pochi anni dopo, nel ’99, fonda la Masseria Li Veli Spa con il Gruppo Avignonesi di Montepulciano e la famiglia Guercia Sammarco di Lecce.
Angelo Maci è direttore generale ed enologo.
Nel 2005 le Cantine Due Palme incorporano la Cantina Sociale Riforma Fondiaria di Cellino. Comincia intanto la grande stagione dei riconoscimenti, per la Due Palme e per Maci. Nel 2005 e nel 2006 riceve il prestigioso Premio Cangrande al Vinitaly di Verona. E sempre nello stesso anno è eletto vicepresidente del Consorzio di Tutela del Salice Salentino Doc.
E’ del 2007 la nomina di Maci ad Accademico Aggregato dell’antica Accademia dei Georgofili, e il riconoscimento alla Due Palme del Premio Speciale Vinitaly per il punteggio più elevato conferito ai tre migliori vini. L’anno successivo, Maci incorpora nella Due Palme la Cantina Angelini di San Pietro Vernotico, nata nel ’63. E sempre nello stesso anno è nominato membro aggregato dell’Accademia della Vite e del Vino.
Seguono, nel ‘2009, tre grandi affermazioni: il Premio Speciale Vinitaly alla Due Palme; la nomina ad Ambasciatore del Negroamaro nel mondo, da parte dell’Associazione Città del Vino; nonché quella a Presidente del Consorzio del Salice Salentino.
E ancora il Cangrande nel 2010; la nomina a membro sia del Consiglio di Confcooperative – Fedagri, che del Comitato Vitivinicolo Nazionale. Seguono altri quattro premi: il Galatea Salentina; la Vela Latina; il Rosa Marina e l’Ercole di Brindisi.
Nel 2012 due scontate riconferme. Una alla guida del Consorzio Salice Salentino, e l’altra alla Confcooperative – Fedagri e a membro del Comitato Vitivinicolo Nazionale. E ancora una pioggia di premi: il Sallentino; il Premio Qualità e Merito per l’Industria; il Cirò-Saracena e l’elezione a Presidente del Club Rotary Brindisi-Valesio.

Già docente di Letteratura Italiana, giornalista, oltre trenta libri fra
narrativa e saggistica, miracolosamante esauriti, una serie di
documentari televisivi aggiungono poco a una vita da giramondo.
Che vissuta nella condizione di scapolo (da ex capulo, senza cappio),
alla quale non ha mai rinunciato, ha reso ancora più irrequieta e per
molti aspetti anarchica.

Translation - English He’s rather greedy, and has a weakness for dark chocolate with hazelnuts. He’s not concerned about his figure. He also loves chocolate ice cream. When he’s in the office, he goes to Brindisi every week with his friends to eat pizza. He prefers “marinara” and likes to eat it while drinking a beer, an almost religious combination.
Antonio is a good conversationalist and gives frequent talks on Apulian wine production in different locations, from the Istituto della Vite to the Chambers of Commerce in Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto, as well as various agricultural faculties. He normally talks off the cuff, using only a few notes mainly comprising figures to do with production, market comparison, and exports.
“I’ve been asked several times to lecture at universities, but that’s not what I’m cut out for. I know about winemaking, and I want to have my say on certain subjects, but I don’t want to appear preachy. I prefer to meet with groups of students at the factory and talk to them there. I find it interesting to talk to people preparing for a career in the world of wine. Inevitably though, some question or other always comes up, that I haven’t prepared enough for.”
His skill lies above all in not letting the argument get away from him, and not giving in to using technical language. With him anthocyanins and enzymes, and sulphites and yeast are rarely used, if only to explain their various functions. The same cannot be said for a person’s relationship with the vine, and the way it is handled, starting with pruning: “It only looks simple. It actually requires expertise and a great deal of experience. You have to make a clean cut so as not to injure the plant; otherwise bacteria and parasites could take hold and cause unexpected damage. Even scissors have an important role to play...” His speeches are a lot like that. He is clear and convincing, and people who know nothing about wine are able to understand him. Moreover, he pays particular attention every time a reference is made to the past. This is the case with pressing the grapes, which Angelo talks about in rapt tones. It was a ritual that brought people into direct, physical contact with the fruit. Because I have a concrete vision of the process in my head, he lets me look at several photos from the era. They are pictures of strong men, but also women, who are modestly lifting their skirts, and are surrounded by children happily splashing around. This is a world that existed here for centuries.
Maci has made a statement several times over the course of our meetings, actually he has made two, and even though they are very different, they are in perfect harmony with each other: “To cultivate a good vine, first of all you have to cultivate the man. Wine exists because there are people who till the soil and look after the grapes, day in day out. Nowadays, those people’s children may not continue the work, but they share their parents love and passion.” His second thought is about the vine; the vine that produces grapes so it can reproduce. It is obeying a biological imperative, linked above all to the environment and the climate. The oenologist is dealing with a living thing, and any notions of perfection have to be forgotten about. This is because, as is the case with people, any small personality defect can often become indicative of an entire personality. The same goes for wine.
I’m trying to paint a picture of the man who is no stranger to the life of the factory. But Angelo is unstoppable. His enthusiasm in reliving the past makes him tell stories in an intense and emotional way, making them even more captivating. What has surprised me in an autobiography like this, is the fact that none of the Due Palme’s projects over the years can be wholly attributed to him. They all came about and matured in the climate of broad consensus and active collaboration that is the company’s hallmark.
I must admit that I find it hard to believe in such a collaborative environment, but Angelo seems to ignore using “I” in favour of “we”. That way, the merit for every initiative goes to the co-operative, even when every indicator points to his business skills being heavily involved. Angelo Maci is a good-looking man, and he knows it. He is gifted with a natural likability and elegance, which remain untouched by age. During the many events involving the Due Palme, the staff is always made up of pretty girls. Wine and women, a combination that stretches far back into history.
NEW MARKETS
It’s not enough to make a good wine, or to accredit its image and quality to its close relationship with a special area, you have to sell it. And this is no small feat when you think that the Due Palme produces around nine million bottles. We have over a thousand members’ shares to consider. They might be able to put up with a small delay in payment if the takings are being used for the vineyard’s upkeep, but nothing more than that. We haven’t even talked about the fact that the build-up of unsold wine leads to storage problems. So the most important thing is to sell the product in the shortest time possible, and for the best price: “The “quality/market” coupling sums up my philosophy. In 1995 we started bottling wine with our eyes set firmly on foreign markets. It was a difficult process, but today we are among the main large-scale, Apulian wine exporters. For years now, it has been the foreign market that has bought nearly all our wine.”
It is only recently, says Maci, that the Due Palme has turned its attention to the domestic market. First Apulia, and then on to Lazio, Lombardy, Campania, and Umbria. These regions have all been able to taste the Negroamaro and Primitivo that are now widely present in our best products.
However, that is not enough. Production at the factory is so great that the company has branched out even further into the wholesale market. In this way, contracts are accruing with supermarket chains Esselunga, Penny Market, Auchan, and Sma. This sales network merits a lot of attention given that it buys almost 70% of the wine produced.
Opening up this new channel was very demanding for the Due Palme, and meant bringing all of Maci’s entrepreneurial skills to the fore: “I realised that starting with the bottle wasn’t enough. First of all our wines had to become well known. To achieve this we had to offer great quality at affordable prices. Therefore, we opted for five litre glass and plastic demijohns, because there is a flourishing market for wine packaged like that. The strategy didn’t take long to open the way for bottled wine.”
Alongside its wholesale business, the company has also continued to expand its network of exclusive shops. Last year they had a turnover of around eight million Euros, and that’s not all. Once again, Maci’s business nose has quickly sniffed out the ever increasing trend for buying wine online. In Europe, internet wine sales stand at 10%, but the phenomenon has yet to catch on in Italy: “We set up a new website that is both attractive and functional. It’s designed to attract wine lovers’ attention and also people who want to know more about wine. It’s a modern tool that brings us up to date with the rest of Europe.”
The company’s relationship with foreign markets merits a chapter all of its own. Not only do they represent the company’s traditional marketplace (it has only turned its attention to the domestic market in recent years), but it’s also interesting to know which countries import Negroamaro and Primitivo. It’s surprising to note that alongside established exports to Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Canada, we are now exporting to far away countries, geographically and in terms of development, religion, and way of life. Here I am referring particularly to Cambodia, Vietnam, Macao, and the Philippines. These are all countries where selling Italian wines would have been inconceivable a few years ago. This is because there is scant knowledge about wine in these countries, if at all: “I agree it was a courageous move, but I’ve always liked being a pioneer, so I got the go-ahead from the board for this plan. Not only was the outcome uncertain, but we also had to deal with all the risks that go along with trying a new venture. In Vietnam there are taxes, levies and duties equal to 91% of the price of a bottle of wine. Despite all of this, sales are increasing, spurred on by Vietnam’s rapidly expanding GDP, which is growing at around 7% a year.”
The fact that Vietnam is buying wines from the Salento is nothing new. I knew that France had a long colonial history in the country which has left a few people who still speak French, but there is no trace of Italian wines there. This led me to gather information about the surprising Vietnamese preferences when it comes to wine. Vietnam has a population of more than 87 million, and has a rich culinary tradition with more than five hundred dishes (from bats to cobras). People have always drunk Ruo Ran alongside coconut milk. Ruo Ran is a rice wine containing a pickled snake. Apparently it’s very good for you. The country is predominantly Buddhist (only 10% of the population is Catholic), and the way of life has nothing in common with western customs, least of all drinking wine. However, thanks to the growth of the economy and a clever move by the Italian Trade Agency, which set up a great web site in Vietnamese, Italian wine exports to the country grew by 26% in 2011.
“Even to the biggest optimist this is an unexpected success. The same goes for other Southeast Asian countries, and planet China. This result has spurred us on, and we are now viewing foreign wholesale markets through a new prism. It is a difficult path, and we have to make a million guarantees even when faced with numerous restrictions.; in the end though it has borne fruit. Just consider that a well known European brand, that manages eight hundred supermarkets, has chosen the Due Palme to supply it with Apulian wines.”
The progressive opening up of the American market is drawing to a very successful conclusion, and the company is preparing to take on a lead role in promoting wines from the Salento there. This policy will continue to receive support from the Puglia Best Wine consortium, which is made up of seven of the region’s biggest wine producers. Its goal is to promote the area’s excellence to non- European markets: “These are relationships that take time and trust to build. We put a great deal into them, as we do with our partners. The company’s strength continues to be its sense of community. Without continued support from our people, everything would fail.” This is all in spite of the fact that co-operatives in the area have shrunk by around 11%. There is a positive side to this news though, because it has meant that various systems have had to be streamlined, which has overcome the fragmentation that limited the market share of Apulian wines in the past. Here too the Due Palme has established itself as a leader among businesses in the Salento. In 2012 it absorbed San Gaetano di Lizzano which is now a full member of the co-operative: “Managing foreign markets requires a systematic presence in all of these marketplaces. It’s not enough to put your faith in a good distributor. It takes meetings, tastings, and contact with journalists and buyers. You have to make sure that the wine is the leading lady. This explains our company’s participation not only in big international wine fairs from Belgium to Albania, but also in the initiatives organised for the consortium by the Common Market Organisation for Wine, which promotes our wines in Hong Kong, São Paolo, and Shanghai.”
Apulia has fantastic business potential, in particular the Due Palme. Even if I must admit that other than the number of bottles it produces, its delivery times, the travel documents, and the payment system it uses, I know very little about it. Still, the idea of a Cambodian drinking Primitivo or a Laotian accompanying his meal with an excellent Negroamaro never fails to intrigue me.
I want to find out more about these countries that, until recently, were strangers to wine drinking, but have now become a focal point for our biggest wine producers.
Cambodia
It’s not easy to grasp how wine (and I’m talking about Chilean and Australian wines here as well), has been able to make inroads among people in areas that have no tradition of wine drinking. It’s not by chance that in Cambodia, which has more than fourteen million inhabitants, no drinks are allowed at the table, including water. Wine, if you can call it that, is made from rice and is served in earthenware jars. Whisky is made in a similar way. Here everything is made from rice, including coffee.
In a context like this you need someone like Chan Thai Chhoeung, who in 2000 planted the first Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon vines three hundred kilometres from the capital Phnom Penh. He was spurred on by the fact that the royal family had always favoured this wine. In Cambodia there are only two seasons, both of them very hot. The dry season runs from November to May, and the rainy season from June to October. The temperature actually helps the grapes to ripen very quickly and so there are two harvests. Mister Chan doesn’t produce more than ten thousand bottles, but they’re enough to make him well known.
I think the fact that Cambodia, along with large swathes of Southeastern Asia, is interested in European wines has a lot to do with its long colonial history under the French. Even if drinking wine was limited to that era, and it was only drunk by diplomats and Europeans in the capital city, the great Bordeaux wines left their mark, and it is that cultural heritage that today is opening the door for Italian wines as well.
The country has emerged from a long painful period, from the Vietnamese invasion to the terror of the Khmer Rouge. It has only known democracy and stability for twenty years, under a parliamentary monarchy: “It’s a market, says Maci, which needs more time than the others in the way you approach it. France left a considerable mark on the place, and the myth of Bordeaux wines is still alive and well. However, Italy is doing well too, and in particular Apulia. Thanks to the consortium’s efforts, it is carving out a respectable place for itself. The rest, as always, comes down to quality and promotion.”
Vietnam
The long and bloody war left it the most communist country in Southeast Asia out of China, Laos and Cambodia. The landscape is difficult and tricky to navigate, and it is not always easy to access places beyond the two eastern and western coastal strips that border the South China Sea. The country has around ninety million inhabitants, nearly all of whom are Buddhists (Catholics make up only 10% of the population, the largest community outside the Philippines). There is limited use of French, a colonial hangover. Vietnam has a cuisine of nearly five hundred traditional dishes, mostly meat based, that range from bats to cobras. The staple food is obviously white rice.
With regard to drinks, the situation gets a little more complicated. The national drinks are coconut milk and wine, but I’m not sure up to which point the latter can be called that. It’s called Ruo Ran, is made from rice, and has a pickled snake in it. Apparently it’s very good for you, and the Vietnamese like it a lot, as much as they like tea.
In a context like this, consolidated by centuries of history, imagining that our wines could make inroads here seemed a utopian ideal. However, the growth of the country’s GDP, on average 7% per year, offers many opportunities to businesses that are able to adapt to an ever changing market. Of course we must remember that wine is an emerging product here, along with beer and spirits. The growth of the wine market (Italian wines registered an increase of 26% in 2011) is held up by tax hikes, levies and duties equal to 91% of the cost of a bottle.
“What interests us, explains Maci, is that the market’s constant growth is not only to do with quality wines, but above all wines that are produced in specific areas and from very old vines. It’s a demand that perfectly suits our supply. Negroamaro and Primitivo are peerless in this area, and the Due Palme is using this fact to its advantage. The Italian Trade Agency office in Ho Chi Minh City has set up a website in Vietnamese dedicated to Italian wines, which is great news for us...”
Laos
On the surface, Laos seems to be the least exciting of all the emerging Southeast Asian markets. Instead, aided by fairly reasonable import duties, compared to the high costs in Vietnam and Thailand, Laos is, despite its small population (barely six million), proving to be one of the most interesting markets.
Once more the link to wine goes back to French colonialism. And here I mean wine in the European sense, made from grapes. Laotians have always been fans of wine made from ginger and sugar palm leaves. And we mustn’t forget rice wine either, which is drunk all over this part of Asia, and which along with whisky drunk straight (the popular Lao Lao), are the national drinks.
Chinese tea has its own place, and is drunk at the beginning of every meal. Unlike neighbouring Thailand, Laotian cuisine is not spicy. Traditional cooking is low in fat and uses fish and tropical fruits, particularly mangoes and pineapples. Meals are normally accompanied by beer, which is in competition with European wines because it is cheaper: “Laos is no exception, emphasises Maci, because here too traditional wines are preferred. It’s useless promoting international wines given that the competition from Chilean and Australian brands is too strong for us. What the new world doesn’t have though are Nebbiolo, Sangiovese or Moscato, not to mention our Negroamaro. This is our battleground. We mustn’t forget either that the Laotian middle classes still prefer Italian and French wines.”
The Philippines
More like a continent than an archipelago (there are more than seven thousand islands), the Philippines has just over one hundred million inhabitants, and is among the most populous countries in the world. It is also one of the many global tax havens. A Catholic country (the Philippines are a former Spanish colony, and takes its name from Philip II) it has traditions in common with China, Malaysia, and all the countries to the south east of the old empire.
With regard to the country’s cuisine, traces of Spanish influence have given way to oriental flavours, often in the widespread use of vinegar or lemon, or in drinks made from fermented coconut. Dishes, which are mainly fish based, are usually accompanied by international Chilean or Australian white wines, which are also the best represented on the market. 60% of wine sales take place in supermarkets in Manila or Cebu, where business peoples’ greater spending power means they choose new world or European wines.
In the capital, Manila, there are not many importers. This is because importing foreign goods is subject to complex, heavy taxation. In any case, the amount of wine drunk is fairly low. Only Shanghai, the most westernised of Chinese cities, reaches the level of 2.15 litres drunk per capita each year. Even if you take into account the number of inhabitants, that number translates into more than eight hundred million bottles. Of course big cities like London, New York, Los Angeles or Tokyo consume on average 6-7 litres annually, but the history involved is completely different.
“In the Philippines, observes Maci, our only competition comes from France, whose presence in the far eastern market has taken a different path. A label like Bordeaux is difficult to beat, because unlike the nine hundred thousand hectares it has at its disposal, we can only offer a few thousand, and they are little known. Le Langhe, Chianti or Salento mean nothing to people in this part of the world. If we are to get our wines out there, we need our protective consortia and wine producers to implement concrete, far-reaching policies. The market’s potential is interesting but we need to put the work in.
Hong Kong
Far away from Europe, Hong Kong has its own special place. It is the market leader for the whole of Asia (wines destined for China transit through the city thanks to the presence of over two thousand importers), and the former British colony has for some years been a haven for European wines. This is down to two things, which are difficult to draw comparisons between, but that are both extraordinary players on a new stage. The first is a bunker built in the Second World War as a giant construction warehouse, which later became a wine shop and storage facility. It is a singular building constructed around a long corridor with very thick walls made of strengthened cement. You have to descend twenty-four metres to reach the facility. A painstakingly put together space full of great wines and vintages has taken the place of weapons and rockets. However, even though this conversion is courageous and groundbreaking, the risks involved in its undertaking are not that high if you consider that Hong Kong, with its long colonial history under the British, has always had a good relationship with quality wines.
Now we come to the second reason behind the huge explosion in the wine market (an increase of more than 240 per cent in 2012) and which definitely has nothing to do with Hong Kong’s British past, or the inception of the wine storage facility mentioned above. The boom is linked to the abolition of alcohol import tax in 2008, which opened up an unexpected gap in the market for European wines, led by France and Italy.
This turnaround has had an immediate effect on the wholesale market. Thirty companies have sprung up in the last five years offering a vast choice of wines made not only by famous, established wine producers, but also less well known ones, both in name and vintage. They pique the interest of Chinese wine collectors. Hong Kong has usurped New York’s long established position as a world leader in the wine trade thanks to its construction of storage facilities that control not only temperature and humidity, but that are also equipped with every form of security possible to protect the most precious wines. Since the import tax was abolished, the Due Palme has had a presence in Hong Kong with a targeted selection of its wines, particularly those linked to Apulia: “For a while now we’ve been dedicating a lot of time to the markets in Hong Kong and mainland China. Competition is fierce, but once again, we focus on the identity and quality of our wines. The Due Palme is expanding and we can’t allow ourselves to lose this battle. China also needs to buy from abroad, to spend the yuan, which is at risk of becoming too strong a currency and creating problems for exports. I think this is the Chinese government’s policy and we should pay attention to it.”
Macau
More than four centuries of Portuguese rule have left few traces in Macau, a small city built on two islands and a peninsula sitting neatly alongside the East China Sea.
Traces of its history can be seen here and there, but it remains mostly hidden, submerged as it is by a crowd of Chinese (They make up 95% of the population), and an orgy of thirty-five casinos spread out hand over fist; such is modern Macau. Over five thousand gambling tables that never close and whose takings are six times higher than Las Vegas’. Gambling has grown steadily since 2002 when the Chinese government legalised it. Due to this, the former colony leads the way in unbridled luxury. High fashion, precious jewels and exclusive cars tempt passersby with every step they take. Wine too has a role to play in all this, especially because of the economy’s strong growth. In 2012 it grew more than 7% with respect to 2011. This growth has had an impact on wine drinking, but which wines? The city’s Portuguese heritage and the recent increase in wealth have given rise to very exclusive labels. The extensive construction in central Macau is testament to this. Buildings here play host not only to famous restaurants (among them Campania’s own Don Alfonso), but also the biggest wine collection in the world, more than two hundred thousand bottles. 70% of them are French wines made by famous producers and from very good vintages.
On the face of it then, it seems there is no space for our wines. But we mustn’t forget that people in Macau, like Beijing and Shanghai, have the highest wine consumption levels in the world. This is opening up a gap in the market for Italian wines in the future. The problem lies not only in being represented in the market, but also in promoting our best products, with particular attention paid to Apulian wines with an established tradition. Once again, it comes down to gathering extensive information and sharing it in the most imaginative way possible. We mustn’t forget that wines arrive in Macau after having been re-exported from Hong Kong, so there is no tax to pay on them.
“There are two great praiseworthy initiatives that have helped a lot in opening Macau up to our wines. I’m referring to the courses on Italian wine run by the Italian Trade Agency. These courses are an extraordinary tool for raising awareness about our products. As well as this, there is the long relationship between China and Vinitaly. For the last ten years the organisation has spread the word about Italian wine all over China. There is still a lot to do, but the finish line is in sight, and Italy and my Salento are looking good to win the race.”

It’s a great honour for me to be able talk about my feelings for Angelo Maci. I want to thank him for the tireless, passionate work he does every day. His passion is contagious and feeds not only his own ambition, but the ambition of an entire area.
Angelo Maci was one of the first people I met after I took up the post of council member for agriculture and food in July 2009. I was immediately struck by the enthusiasm of the Cantine Due Palme, and happy to see its success. My initial impressions have been confirmed by the ongoing visits to the company that I make. From these visits I see three elements that are useful tools for the continued development of our agricultural sector.
The first, as I was saying, is passion. A passion that goes hand in hand with the pride in a great tradition that has once again become characteristic of our region. This enthusiasm is essential fuel for successful agricultural businesses. If you’re not madly in love with what you do, especially in agriculture, it is very difficult to have the patience to wait, sometimes for long periods of time, until you reach your goal. Angelo is the motor behind this perseverance. He refuses to give up on a dream some may consider too ambitious. He has come face to face with the pain of sacrifice and, as is the case in every major undertaking, he has faced obstacles and his own failings.
The second element is the project itself that Angelo Maci is involved in. The co-operative model works because he is able to bring together single strong points, and to overcome criticism and obstacles “together”, which alone would be insurmountable. This modern co-operative model is innovative across the board, and it uses land in a way that deals with one of the historic weak points of our agriculture and food business system, the excessive fragmentation of primary producers.
Cantina Due Palme is a case in point of how a particular method and organisational model can help our sector become more competitive. It is a model that I’m paying close attention to, and I am convinced it can be a beacon for the other main regional wine producers.
Lastly, Angelo Maci’s experience shows us another essential thing. In order to face the challenges of modernity, primary production is not enough. It’s a good starting point, but it’s no longer enough. In a globalised world where rules often seem to apply to some and unfortunately not to others, where there are many, constantly shifting reference points, we obviously can’t focus solely on primary production. It is fundamental (with regard to wine) to employ well developed oenological skills that will keep us going in the right direction, towards quality. We need to develop these skills in conjunction with cultural programmes and organisational skills that will enable us to open a dialogue with the markets. Angelo Maci and the Cantine Due Palme have cut through the nostalgia. They have changed clothes as it were and put on a modern suit, which is here to stay and which is emblematic of a new kind of agriculture, but one that certainly does not deny its roots. Angelo knows how to sprinkle innovation and research onto the past and the traditions that make up our people and communities’ DNA. Angelo Maci and the Cantine Due Palme provide us with a plan for the region’s future growth and for generations to come.

I’m writing to you to wish you all the best on your birthday. I also want to congratulate you on your amazing 40 year career at the head of the Cantine Due Palme. You have made an amazing contribution over the last four decades. This is shown by the fact that the Cantine Due Palme has, thanks to your work, become one of Apulia’s and southern Italy’s main cooperative hubs. It has become a reference point for all Italian wine producers and a shining example for those who wish to capitalise on the success of the Made in Italy agriculture and food brand around the world.
Sacrifice, dedication, and passion. These are the winning values that you have espoused over the years. You made a life decision to serve your region, which is rich in values, both material and intangible. You have been able to reinforce these values and strengthen the region’s attractiveness and development opportunities in the face of an ever more globalised marketplace. It is a life decision that I’m very sure you will continue to have success with.
The challenges that face our food and agriculture sector are still varied and difficult, and it’s in this regard that your experience is invaluable. It should serve as a beacon for all Italian producers, and should become ever more strategic in the face of a market characterised by deep uncertainty, that needs to research new methods to remain competitive.

I’ll try and say a few words about Angelo Maci, even though I would need to be an excellent storyteller to do him justice. Angelo knows how to balance form and substance, concreteness and aesthetics, business and sociability, a hectic work schedule and necessary moments of fun. He is one of that rare breed of gentlemen that hardly exists anymore. His unrivalled business skills together with his generosity and distinctive altruism make him a real man of honour.
I met him almost ten years ago in Rome, when I took over the Presidency of Confcooperative-Fedagri. We got on from the start and over the years I have been able to see his many skills: oenologist, wine grower, partner, and a capable company director able to set out a strategic vision for his own company, and those that work with it.
Another quality worth mentioning is Angelo’s love for where he comes from. His Salento full of wonderful smells is essential to him, and is a place he could never be parted from. Angelo has really done a great deal for his area and the people that live there. He has succeeded in transforming one time peasants into the Cantine Due Palme’s business partners (which as we all know is his real family).
Angelo moves like a lion on the plains between the company’s vines and barrels. Because of the admiration I feel for him, I have always made myself available every time he has invited me to Apulia, or to one of the many initiatives organised by Vinitaly in Verona, the biggest wine show in the world, and one in which Angelo and the Due Palme are among the most appreciated and respected leaders.
I remember the year, one of many, when the Cantine Due Palme won the Vinitaly Premio Speciale. After the prize giving we went to their stand with all the protocol authorities. Angelo welcomed us with all the charm of someone who is used to winning! After greeting us and putting some glasses on the table, he began to talk about the bottle of Selvarossa he was proudly holding in the same way Dante described Beatrice in the Divine Comedy. We were all enthralled by his description of the journey from vine, to cantina, to bottle. When Angelo opened the bottle, the smell of cherries and vanilla filled our nostrils (the wine is made from the negroamaro and black malvasia nera grapes). At that point, I committed a cardinal sin by daring to ask: “Excuse me Angelo, do you have a bottle of bubbly? I prefer sparkling wine.” As soon as I’d said it I thought he would never invite me again, but after a second’s pause he simply replied: “I don’t have any this year, but next year I’ll have some for you.”I obviously thought this was a diplomatic response, but the following year when I went back to see him at Vinitaly, to my great surprise he served me the sparkling wine Melarosa and said: “Here you are Paolo, here’s the bubbly I promised you!!”
That was one of the umpteen confirmations that Angelo is a real gentleman and always keeps his word. Happy Birthday Mister Due Palme!!

I’m very grateful that I have the opportunity to discuss two significant moments in your life as a citizen and as a businessman.
First I must congratulate you on your seventieth birthday, which would normally be a private family affair. However, when you continue to work tirelessly every day and are the heart and soul of an important company, your birthday ceases to be just about you. It involves other people and their families. Put simply, your birthday involves a whole community.
Seventy years is nearly three quarters of a century. And those seventy years have seen great innovation and rapid development. Today is not only sum of your personal balance sheet, but also of the great deal of creativity you have put into your work.
Thanks to you and your collaborators’ driving force and enthusiasm, the Cantine Due Palme has become a centre of excellence, its name on the lips of our foreign competitors, and often now their customers choose us. The inhabitants of Cellino San Marco and the outlying areas of Brindisi are deeply grateful for the increase in business.
The second thing I want to mention is the jump in oenological quality that you have fought for so tenaciously. You have moved us away from the obscurity of blended wines with the help of prestigious northern Italian labels.

A WINNING TRIO: Angelo Maci, Salento wines, and the Cantine Due Palme

Angelo Maci was born in 1943 in Cellino San Marco, in Brindisi province. He is the third generation of a historical Salento winegrowing family.
Before he was thirty he had started work in his Grandfather’s cantina, Ettamiano. He oversaw the business’s expansion and brought new life to the vineyard.
In 1979 he founded a new company, Eurovini, located on the current premises of the Due Palme. The new business focused on making must, and using tankers to sell wine abroad. Angelo was the president of the Cellino rural bank for fourteen years, from 1982-1996.
Then, after having bought other vineyards of around sixty hectares, he set up the Cantine Due Palme co-operative in 1989, with himself as chairman and oenologist. In this role he convinced the board of directors to put bottled and unpackaged wine on an equal footing. In 1995 the Cantina’s exports accounted for 98% of production.
A few years later in 1999, he set up the Masseria Li Veli Spa with the Avignonesi de Montepulciano group and the Guercia Sammarco family from Lecce. Angelo is the spa’s chief executive and oenologist.
In 2005, the Cantine Due Palme took over the Cantina Sociale Riforma Fondiaria in Cellino. This is when Maci and the Due Palme’s work really began to be recognised. In 2005 and 2006 he received the prestigious Premio Cangrande at Vinitaly in Verona. In the same year he was elected vice-president of the protective consortium for Salice Salentino Doc.
In 2007 Maci was named a member of the Academy of Georofili, and the Due Palme received Vinitaly’s Premio Speciale for the highest marks received for the best three wines. The next year, Maci incorporated the Cantina Angelini di San Pietro Vernotico, which opened in 1963, into the Due Palme. In the same year he was made a member of the Italian Academy of Vines and Wines.
In 2009 he won three prestigious prizes. The Due Palme won Vinitaly’s Premio Speciale, he was named worldwide negroamaro ambassador by the Città del Vino association, as well as being appointed President of the Salice Salentino consortium.
He won the Cangrande award again in 2010, and was appointed a member of both the board of Fedagri-Confcooperative and the National Winegrowing Committee. Four further awards followed: The Galatea Salentina, the Vela Latina, the Rosa Marina, and the Ercole di Brindisi,
In 2012, two of his appointments were reconfirmed. One as the head of the Salice Salentino Consortium, and the other at Fedagri –Confcooperative. He was also reconfirmed as a member of the National Winegrowing Committee. 2012 also saw him receive further awards: The Sallentino, the Premio Qualità e Merito per l’ndustria, the Cirò-Saracena and he was elected President of the Brindisi-Valesio Rotary club

The Neapolitan Nino D’Antonio suffers from the almost pathological Vice of Lying, which is also the title of one of his books. He returns home late at night to better justify his morning lie-ins. He is a lecturer in Italian literature, a journalist, and has had over thirty books published, among them novels and collections of essays (that miraculously sold out). He has also made a series of television documentaries during his globetrotting life. He is a confirmed bachelor, which makes him even more boisterous and anarchic in many ways.
He has won various awards for his journalism: il Bassano del Grappa Unione Ceramisti, il Vicenza Economia, Il Sanremo, as well as the Premio Culturale della Presidenza del Consiglio. Two of his documentaries on the Amalfi coast won prizes at the International Tourist Film Festival.
He became interested in wine as a statement of civilisation and culture at the beginning of the 1950s. His now mythical wine collection bears testament to this.

Abstract
Purpose: La cirugía reconstructiva uretral es el procedimiento que permite obtener mayor tasa de buenos resultados, pero no está libre de complicaciones. Revisamos las complicaciones ocurridas en un grupo de pacientes, cómo tratarlas y cómo prevenirlas.
Materials and Methods: 182 pacientes con diagnóstico de estenosis uretral fueron intervenidos. Realizamos: 95 uretroplastias término terminales en uretra bulbar, 40 uretroplastias con empleo de mucosa bucal, de las cuales, 30 fueron en uretra bulbar, en posición ventral y dorsal, y 10 en uretra peneana. 25 uretroplastias peneanas con colgajo fasciocutáneo . En 13 pacientes fue necesario realizar una perineostomía. Hubo 9 casos de rotura traúmatica de uretra, que fueron sometidos a anastómosis término terminal posterior. Realizamos cirugía en dos tiempos en 6 ocasiones por Liquen Escleroso. El seguimiento medio fue de 48 meses.
Results: 23 pacientes presentaron algún tipo de disfunción sexual. En 7 pacientes se detectó un divertículo uretral, de los que 6 fueron tratados con una nueva uretroplastia. En 6 ocasiones apareció una fistula postoperatoria que fue resuelta con tratamiento conservador en 4 casos y con cirugía en 2. 20 pacientes presentaron complicaciones que precisaron tratamiento médico: 5 infecciones de herida quirúrgica, 2 infecciones urinarias, 4 orquiepididimitis, 1 embolismo pulmonar y 1 neuroapraxia del nervio peroneo. Hubo 7 hematomas peneano- escrotales que se resolvieron de forma espontánea.
Conclusions: La disfunción sexual fue la complicación más frecuente tras la uretroplastia. La anastómosis término terminal es la técnica que menos complicaciones registra, mientras los colgajos fasciocutáneos ocasionan el mayor número El empleo de mucosa bucal es un procedimiento con mínima morbilidad.
Introducción
La uretroplastia es el tratamiento que consigue mayor porcentaje de buenos resultados en pacientes con estenosis de uretra. Hay que elegir la técnica más adecuada a cada caso y conocer diferentes alternativas quirúrgicas, como el empleo de colgajos fasciocutáneos o el uso de mucosa bucal para estenosis complejas. Sin embargo, la cirugía reconstructiva de la uretra presenta complicaciones que pueden afectar a la función sexual, a la micción, retrasar el proceso de curación e incluso poner en riesgo la vida del paciente. Pueden presentarse de forma precoz o tardía y resolverse con tratamiento médico o quirúrgico.
Presentamos una revisión de las complicaciones recogidas en una serie de 182 pacientes sometidos a diferentes técnicas de uretroplastia, el modo de tratarlas y de prevenirlas. No incluímos a las recidivas entre las complicaciones por considerarlas más bien un fallo o un mal resultado.
Material y Métodos
Revisamos los historiales de 273 pacientes diagnosticados de estenosis uretral en el período 1997-2012. Excluímos los que fueron tratados mediante uretrotomía interna y aquellos casos en los que la cirugía se limitó al meato uretral y fosa navicular. Finalmente fueron incluídos en el estudio 182 pacientes tratados con diferentes técnicas quirúrgicas.
La media de edad fue de 51 años, (15-87). En todos los casos el diagnóstico se llevó a cabo mediante uretrografía retrógrada y miccional. Otros procedimientos utilizados fueron la Flujometría y la Uretroscopia. El seguimiento medio fue de 48 meses (12-84). En todos los controles se efectuó Flujometría y medición del residuo postmiccional.
La etiología fue desconocida en 76 pacientes; yatrogénica en 55, incluyendo sondajes prolongados y procedimientos endoscópicos; en 27 ocasiones el origen fue un traumatismo: rotura de uretra peneana, traumatismo pélvico o perineal; en 9 ocasiones se detectó un antecedente de uretritis; 6 pacientes fueron diagnosticados de Liquen Escleroso y 9 pacientes presentaban antecedentes de cirugía por Hipospadias en la infancia.
Se realizaron 95 uretroplastias término terminales en uretra bulbar, 6 de ellas ampliadas con mucosa bucal; 40 uretroplastias con empleo de mucosa bucal, de las que 30 fueron en uretra bulbar, 25 en posición ventral y 5 dorsal; y 10 en uretra peneana. En 25 ocasiones se realizó uretroplastia peneana con colgajo fasciocutáneo. Se llevó a cabo una perineostomía en 13 ocasiones, y en 9 casos se realizó anastómosis término terminal posterior, por estenosis secundaria a rotura uretral de origen traumático.
Para obtener el injerto de mucosa bucal seguimos la técnica de McAninch (1), con las dimensiones estándar de Barbagli (4 x 2,5 cm.) (2) y cierre del lecho en todos los casos.
Utilizamos antibioterapia en todos los casos iniciando el tratamiento antes de la intervención y manteniéndolo hasta la retirada del catéter. En los casos de cirugía sobre uretra peneana añadimos tratamiento con antiandrógenos durante un mes.
Resultados
Un total de 182 pacientes fueron intervenidos, de los cuales 125 presentaban una estenosis de uretra bulbar, 35 peneana, 13 peneana y bulbar y 9 una estenosis secundaria a rotura traumática.
La uretroplastia peneana presentó complicaciones en 19 pacientes (54%), siendo el colgajo fasciocutáneo la técnica usada en más ocasiones, con una tasa de complicaciones del 68%. Hubo 3 infecciones de herida, 1 hematoma y 4 fístulas que fueron tratadas quirúrgicamente en 2 ocasiones, cerrando las otras dos mediante un tiempo más prolongado de catéter. La disfunción sexual fue referida por 6 pacientes: dolor en la erección (2 casos), incurvación y torsión (2 casos) y alteraciones de la sensibilidad del glande (2 casos). Se produjeron 5 divertículos, que fueron tratados en 4 ocasiones mediante pseudoespongioplastia y cierre primario tal como describió Radojicic (3).
Cuando se realizó cirugía reconstructiva sobre uretra bulbar, 21 pacientes presentaron complicaciones (16,8%). La anastómosis término terminal fue la técnica más empleada con 95 casos y un 16% de complicaciones, seguida de la cirugía de ampliación con mucosa bucal en posición ventral que presentó un 20%. La disfunción sexual fue referida por 12 pacientes que manifestaron: impotencia, (2 casos), dificultad para eyacular, (5 casos), acortamiento del pene, (3 casos) y dolor en la erección, (2 casos). Se detectaron 2 divertículos que fueron tratados quirúrgicamente. Hubo 4 infecciones de herida quirúrgica, 6 hematomas y una fístula que fue resuelta mediante un tiempo más prolongado de catéter vesical.
La uretroplastia anastomótica posterior fue seguida de disfunción sexual en 3 ocasiones, con imposibilidad para conseguir la erección; se realizó tratamiento con inhibidores de 5-fosfodiesterasa con éxito en todos los casos. Hubo una infección de herida secundaria a una fístula, que precisó de nueva anastómosis término terminal.
La perineostomía se complicó con un hematoma en 1 paciente.
Tras la obtención del injerto de mucosa bucal no hubo hematomas ni infección del lecho quirúrgico. Mostraron hinchazón de la mejilla el 60% de los pacientes durante las primeras 24 horas y el 50% refirieron molestias locales en las primeras 72 horas, que fueron tratadas con empleo de antiinflamatorios. El 90% seguían una dieta corriente una semana después de la intervención y el 100% dos semanas después.
La posición prolongada de las piernas durante la cirugía de la uretra bulbar ocasionó en un caso una neuroapraxia del nervio peroneo y en otro caso una tromboflebitis que fue seguida de un tromboembolismo pulmonar.
Es necesario hacer referencia al número de recidivas, aunque no las incluímos entre las complicaciones, sino que las consideramos un mal resultado. La tasa de recidiva fue del 13,7% de forma global, 25% en uretra peneana y 11,2% en uretra bulbar, cifra con escaso valor estadístico si tenemos en cuenta que se trata de grupos diferentes de pacientes, y por tanto diferentes estenosis y diferentes técnicas. El procedimiento que menos recidivas produjo, fue la anastómosis término-terminal con un 11,5%, y la perineostomía con un 7,6%. La tasa de recidivas con colgajos fasciocutáneos fue del 28% .
Discusión
Cuando se analizan grandes series de uretroplastias, es habitual definir como fallo o fracaso la recidiva radiológica, necesidad de instrumentación, síntomas obstructivos o flujo miccional menor de 15 ml/seg. (4), sin que se haga referencia a complicaciones de la cirugía, que no afectan a la calidad de la micción pero pueden retrasar la curación, alterar la estética genital, afectar a la función sexual o poner en riesgo la vida del paciente.
En la revisión de nuestra serie, hemos considerado que una complicación es, todo aquel evento ocurrido tras la cirugía sobre uretra peneana o bulbar, a corto o medio plazo, que ha precisado de un tratamiento médico o quirúrgico, antes de añadir al paciente al grupo de buenos resultados, o por el contrario al grupo de fallos, en función de la calidad de su micción. Entre los eventos a que nos referimos incluímos la infección de la herida quirúrgica, hematomas, fístulas, divertículos, trastornos secundarios a la posición prolongada de las piernas, alteraciones debidas a la obtención del injerto de mucosa bucal, cicatrices retráctiles, disfunción sexual y otros de menor frecuencia, aunque no por ello menos importantes. No hemos incluído las recidivas por considerar que no se trata de complicaciones de la cirugía sino de malos resultados.
Complicaciones en el lecho donante del injerto de mucosa oral. En 1996 Morey y McAninch popularizaron la técnica de obtención del injerto de mucosa bucal tomado de la mejilla (1). Desde entonces, se han publicado muchas series (5) que muestran la escasa morbilidad de la técnica, y las encuestas de satisfacción tras la cirugía indican que, hasta un 98% de los pacientes, estarían dispuestos a someterse a la técnica nuevamente (2). Para disminuir las alteraciones que refieren los pacientes en las primeras horas, aplicamos hielo local sobre la mejilla, desde el momento de la obtención del injerto hasta que el paciente despierta, e incluimos tratamiento antiinflamatorio durante 48 horas. Suelen referir hinchazón, entumecimiento y dolor leve. Motivo de controversia ha sido si debe cerrarse el lecho donante o dejarlo abierto (6,7). En nuestro grupo, siguiendo la técnica de McAninch (1) cerramos la herida en todos los casos. A las 72 horas la mayoría de los pacientes estaban exentos de molestias locales, pudiendo ingerir una dieta normal una semana después. No hemos utilizado mucosa lingual, pero las series publicadas indican que presenta una mayor morbilidad (8). Del mismo modo, la técnica de obtención del injerto del labio inferior debe ser muy cuidadosa para evitar complicaciones periorales, cicatrices retráctiles o lesión del nervio mentoniano (9), y se ha demostrado que la proporción de pacientes satisfechos es menor con esta técnica.
Divertículos uretrales. No es una complicación frecuente, pero puede aparecer tras una uretroplastia con colgajo fasciocutáneo, o con injerto de mucosa bucal, tanto a nivel peneano como bulbar. En nuestra serie figuran 7 divertículos, 2 en uretra bulbar y 5 en uretra peneana . No siempre son sintomáticos, y en ocasiones constituye un hallazgo en un control radiológico. Para prevenir su aparición se han descrito técnicas que aumentan el soporte uretral ante la presión de la orina a su paso, como la modificación de la técnica de Orandi, situando el colgajo en posición dorsal, o la descrita por Barbagli colocando el injerto sobre los cuerpos cavernosos, también en posición dorsal (10). El tratamiento del divertículo uretral consiste en la resección del tejido sobrante y reconstrucción del trayecto uretral mediante el uso de injertos libres, anastómosis término-terminal ampliada o bien pseudoespongioplastia aprovechando una placa uretral en buenas condiciones (11).
Disfunción sexual. La impotencia y los trastornos de la eyaculación son una complicación postoperatoria a la que cada vez se le da mayor importancia. Es frecuente observarlas tras realizar anastómosis bulbo membranosa en estenosis de uretra posterior postraumática, entre un 20-84% (12), estando su origen relacionado con la lesión original y no sólo con la cirugía. También se observa en la cirugía de la uretra bulbar, estando aceptado que se debe a la lesión de los nervios perineales al seccionar el músculo bulbocavernoso, lo que afectaría a los mecanismos de expulsión del semen, y en menor medida a la erección (13, 14). Barbagli (15), Jordan (16), y posteriormente Andrich (17), han diseñado técnicas mínimamente invasivas que permiten preservar la integridad del músculo que rodea la uretra bulbar, o el aporte vascular a nivel del bulbo, con objeto de minimizar el trauma que supone la disección y apertura de la uretra, lo cual mejora el aporte vascular y preserva terminaciones nerviosas que juegan un papel importante en los mecanismos de la erección y eyaculación.
Otras complicaciones que afectan a la esfera sexual son, la incurvación peneana, acortamiento del pene, presencia de hipo e hiperestesias peneanas, y cicatrices cutáneas que afectan a la estética del pene. La incurvación ventral peneana puede aparecer en casos de excesiva liberación de la uretra distal bulbar, para facilitar una anastómosis sin tensión. Para evitarlo, no conviene sobrepasar el límite del ligamento suspensorio, y en caso de que exista tensión al aproximar los extremos uretrales, es preferible realizar una técnica de ampliación con piel o mucosa bucal. El empleo de colgajos pediculados de piel peneana puede ocasionar tracción y rotación del pene, incurvación lateral y cicatrices deformantes. Para tratar de evitar estas secuelas hay que ser muy cuidadoso al diseñar el colgajo y sus dimensiones, teniendo en cuenta la contracción del mismo, así como una adecuada liberación del pedículo vascular para evitar tracciones.
En nuestra revisión, el 12,6% de pacientes refirieron trastornos relacionados con la disfunción sexual, que fueron tratados, en el caso de trastornos de la erección, con inhibidores de la 5-Fosfo-Diesterasa. No se realizó ningún tratamiento por otras alteraciones.
Otras complicaciones. Para evitar la aparición de infecciones, todos los pacientes reciben tratamiento antibiótico en el preoperatorio inmediato, que mantienen a lo largo de una semana a dosis terapeúticas, y luego a dosis mínimas hasta la retirada de la sonda. En nuestra serie, cinco pacientes presentaron una infección de la herida y dos una infección urinaria. Todos ellos fueron tratados modificando el antibiótico administrado previamente, sin necesidad de otras maniobras.
La aparición de fístulas suele estar asociada a un defecto en la técnica o una vascularización insuficiente del injerto o colgajo, que puede ocasionar necrosis total o parcial. Con frecuencia basta con prolongar el período de catéter uretral hasta el cierre primario de la fuga. La forma de prevenir su aparición es utilizar una técnica meticulosa, estanqueidad de las suturas, sin tensión, evitando superponerlas y utilizando la túnica dartos para recubrirlas; asegurar un aporte vascular al material que utilicemos como sustituto uretral, tanto si es un injerto como, en el caso de colgajos, diseñando amplios pedículos vasculares tanto en anchura como en longitud.
En el 2000 se publicó un estudio retrospectivo sobre complicaciones relacionadas con la posición de litotomía durante la reconstrucción uretral (18). Se identificaron hasta un 10% de trastornos derivados de dicha posición, que incluían neuroapraxia, rabdomiolisis, síndrome compartimental y lumbalgia. En nuestro estudio hemos encontrado dos pacientes con complicaciones que consideramos secundarias a la posición de litotomía: una neuroapraxia del nervio peroneo y un tromboembolismo pulmonar que fue precedido de una tromboflebitis en una extremidad inferior. Para evitar estas complicaciones lo fundamental es la prevención mediante el uso de heparinas de bajo peso molecular durante el postoperatorio, y el empleo de perneras que no ocasionen zonas de compresión durante la cirugía, y de las que se dispone en la actualidad en la mayoría de los servicios quirúrgicos.
Para realizar uretroplastias en dos tiempos es frecuente utilizar mucosa bucal cuando la placa uretral es insuficiente o inservible, de forma que pasado un período entre cuatro y seis meses se pueda tubulizar, reconstruyendo el trayecto uretral. En nuestra experiencia hemos observado dos complicaciones: la necrosis total o parcial del injerto, cuya etiología suele ser un fallo en la vascularización del lecho receptor, y un segundo problema que ocurre durante el tiempo en que la mucosa bucal permanece en contacto con el aire, y que se manifiesta por la aparición de zonas de fibrosis o queratinización, más o menos extensas, que hace necesario reintervenir para su exéresis antes del cierre definitivo.
Conclusiones
La uretroplastia es el método de elección para el tratamiento de la estenosis uretral, tanto anastomótica como de sustitución. En nuestra serie presentaron complicaciones médicas o quirúrgicas el 25% de los pacientes. La disfunción sexual fue la complicación registrada con mayor frecuencia seguida de otras que, en ocasiones, precisaron tratamiento quirúrgico para su resolución, como en el caso de divertículos en uretra peneana o bulbar.
La anastómosis término terminal fue la técnica con menor índice de complicaciones (16,8%) y de recidivas (11,5%). Cuando empleamos colgajos fasciocutáneos a nivel peneano, éstas fueron del 68 y 28% respectivamente. La obtención de injertos de Mucosa Bucal produjo una mínima morbilidad en la mayoría de los pacientes.
Para evitar complicaciones son necesarias medidas preventivas con heparinas de bajo peso molecular, antibioterapia, o material quirúrgico adecuado incluyendo el uso de perneras sin zonas de apoyo; la técnica será meticulosa en la manipulación de injertos y colgajos, prestando especial atención al aporte vascular y al soporte mecánico de unos y otros.

Purpose: Urethral reconstructive surgery is the procedure with the highest success rates. However, it is not free from complications. Here we review the complications that occurred in a group of patients, and how to treat and prevent them.
Materials and Methods: 182 patients diagnosed with urethral stricture were operated on. We carried out 95 termino-terminal urethroplasties on the membranous urethra, 40 urethroplasties using buccal mucosa, 30 of which were performed ventrally and dorsally on the membranous urethra, and 10 urethroplasties of the penile urethra. We also performed 25 penile urethroplasties with fasicocutaneous flaps. 13 patients had to undergo a perineotomy. There were 9 cases of traumatic urethral rupture after undergoing a posterior termino-terminal anastomosis. We had to perform surgery in two stages due to Lichen Sclerosus on 6 occasions. The average monitoring period was 48 months.
Results: 23 patients presented with some kind of sexual dysfunction. 7 patients had urethral diverticula, and 6 of them were treated with a new urethroplasty. Post-operative fistulae occurred on 6 occasions. They were dealt with using conservative treatment in 4 cases, and surgery in 2 cases. 20 patients presented with complications that needed medical treatment: 5 infections of the surgical wound, 2 urinary infections, 4 cases of orchiepididymitis, 1 pulmonary embolism, and 1 neuropraxia of the peroneal nerve. There were 7 cases of penoscrotal haematoma that corrected themselves without the need for medical intervention.
Conclusions: Sexual dysfunction was the most frequent complication following urethroplasty. Termino-terminal anastomosis is the technique with the lowest complication rate, while fasicocutaneous flaps have the highest rate. Using buccal mucosa is the procedure with the lowest morbidity.
Introduction
Urethroplasty is the treatment with the highest percentage of good results in patients with urethral stricture. The most suitable technique has to be chosen in each case, and there must be knowledge of other surgical alternatives as well, such as using fasicocutaneous flaps or buccal mucosa for complex strictures. However, reconstructive surgery of the urethra presents complications that may affect sexual function and urination, delay the healing process, and even endanger the patient’s life. These complications may occur before or after surgery, and can be treated medically or surgically.
We are presenting a review of the complications recorded in 182 patients who were treated using different urethroplasty techniques, and we discuss how to treat and prevent them. We are not including recurrences in the complications, preferring to treat them as failures or as bad results.
Material and Methods
We looked at the histories of 273 patients diagnosed with urethral stricture between 1997 and 2012. We excluded those who had undergone internal urethrotomy and those cases where surgery had been limited to the urinary meatus and fossa navicularis. Lastly, 182 patients were included in the study that had been treated using different surgical techniques.
The average patient age was 51 (15-87). In all cases, the diagnosis was carried out using a retrograde urethrogram. The average monitoring period was 48 months (12-84). Flow meters and measuring post-void residual occurred in all cases.
Etiology was unknown in 76 patients, and was iatrogenic in 55, including prolonged catheterisation and endoscopic procedures. The origin of the stricture was traumatic in 27 cases through rupture of the penile urethra, or pelvic or perineal trauma. Previous urethritis was detected on 9 occasions. 6 patients were diagnosed with Lichen Sclerosus, and 9 patients had undergone previous surgery for childhood hypospadias.
95 termino-terminal urethroplasties were carried out on the membranous urethra, 6 of which were widened using buccal mucosa. 40 urethroplasties were carried out using buccal mucosa, of which 30 were on the membranous urethra, 25 ventrally and 5 dorsally. 10 urethroplasties were carried out on the penile urethra. Penile urethroplasty using fasicocutaneous flaps was carried out on 25 occasions. Perineotomies were carried out on 13 occasions, and there were 9 cases of posterior termino-terminal anastomosis being carried out due to stricture secondary to trauma induced urethral rupture.
To obtain the buccal mucosa graft, we followed the McAninch (1) technique, with the standard Barbagli dimensions (4 x 2.5 cm) (2) with site closure in all cases.
We used antibiotherapy in all cases, starting the treatment before the operation and continuing it until catheter removal. In surgical cases on the penile urethra, we supplemented treatment with antiandrogens for a month.
Results
A total of 182 patients were operated on, of whom 125 presented with a stricture of the membranous urethra, 35 penile, 13 penile and membranous, and 9 with stricture secondary to traumatic rupture.
Penile urethroplasty caused complications in 19 patients (54%), fasicocutaneous flaps being the most frequently used technique. There was a complication rate of 68%. There were 3 wound infections, 1 haematoma, and 4 fistulae that were treated surgically on 2 occasions, with the others being closed over a longer period using a catheter. 6 patients reported sexual dysfunction: Painful erections (2 cases), curvature and torsion (2 cases), and changes in glans sensitivity (2 cases). There were 5 diverticula that were treated on 4 occasions using Radojicic’s (3) primary closure pseudospongioplasty.
When reconstructive surgery was carried out on the membranous urethra, 21 patients had complications (16.8%). Termino-teminal anastomosis was the most frequently used technique, in 95 cases. It had a 16% complication rate. It was followed by surgery to ventrally widen buccal mucosa, with a complication rate of 20%. Sexual dysfunction was reported by 12 patients who suffered from: erectile dysfunction (2 cases), difficulty ejaculating (5 cases), shortening of the penis (3 cases), and painful erections (2 cases). 2 diverticula were detected and were surgically treated. There were 4 infections of surgical wounds, 6 haematomas and 1 fistula that was resolved over a longer period using a vesical catheter.
Posterior anastomotic urethroplasty was followed by sexual dysfunction on 3 occasions, with inability to achieve erection. The issue was treated using PDE5 inhibitors, which was successful in all cases. There was a wound infection secondary to a fistula, which required a new termino-terminal anastomosis.
Perineotomy led to haematoma in 1 patient.
After extracting a buccal mucosa graft, there were no haematomas or infection of the surgical bed. 60% of patients showed swelling of the cheek during the first 24 hours, and 50% reported local discomfort in the first 72 hours. These were treated with anti-inflammatories. 90% of patients were able to follow a normal diet a week after the operation, and 100% after two weeks.
The extended position of the legs during surgery on the membranous urethra caused one case of neuropraxia of the peroneal nerve and another case of thrombophlebitis that led to pulmonary thrombophlebitis.
Discussion
When large series of urethroplasties are analysed, it is normal to define radiological recurrence as a failure. The same goes for the need for instrumentation, obstructive symptoms, or urinary flow below 15 ml/second (4). No reference is made to surgical complications that have no effect on urination, but may delay healing, alter genital aesthetics, affect sexual function, or endanger the patient’s life.
When reviewing our series, and before adding the patient to the good results or failures groups according to how well they are urinating, we decided a complication was any event that happened after surgery on the penile or membranous urethra that required medical or surgical treatment, whether in the short or medium term. We included infection of the surgical site, haematomas, fistulae, diverticula, illnesses secondary to the extended position of the legs, problems arising from the buccal mucosa graft extraction, retractile scars, sexual dysfunction and other less frequently occurring, but no less important complications. We have not included other recurrences as they are not to do with surgical complications, but rather, bad results.
Complications in the buccal mucosa donor bed. In 1996 Morey and McAninch popularised the technique of extracting buccal mucosa from the cheek (1). Since then, many series have been published that show the technique’s low morbidity, and satisfaction surveys taken after the surgery indicate that up to 98% of patients would be willing to undergo the technique again (2). To reduce the irritation reported by patients in the first few hours after the procedure, we applied ice to the cheek, from the moment we harvested the graft to the time the patient woke up. We also included anti-inflammatory treatment for 48 hours. The normal complaints are swelling, numbness and mild pain. A point of controversy has been whether the donor bed should be closed or left open (6, 7). In our group, where we followed the McAninch technique, (1) we closed the wound in all cases. After 72 hours, the majority of patients were free from localised discomfort, and were able to eat a normal diet one week later. We did not use lingual mucosa, but published series indicate it causes greater morbidity (8). In the same way, extracting the graft from the lower lip has to be done very carefully to avoid perioral complications, retractile scars or damage to the mandibular nerve (9). It has been shown that the proportion of satisfied patients is lower with this technique.
Urethral diverticula. This is not a very frequent complication, but it can occur after urethroplasty with fasicocutaneous flaps, or buccal mucosa graft, both at a penile and membranous level. There were 7 diverticula in our series, 2 in the membranous urethra and 5 in the penile urethra. They are not always symptomatic, and on occasion they are an important find during radiological checks. To prevent diverticula occurring techniques have been invented to improve urethral support for the pressure of urine as it is passed; for example by modifying the Orandi technique, situating the flap dorsally (10). Treating urethral diverticula consists of resection of the excess tissue and reconstruction of the urinary meatus using free grafts, widened termino-terminal anastomosis or even pseudospongiplasty using a urethral plate, in good conditions (11).
Sexual dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction and problems with ejaculation are post-operative complications that are becoming ever more important. They often occur after carrying out bulbomembranous anastomosis on posterior post-traumatic urethral strictures. These complications occur in 20-84% of patients (12). Their appearance is linked to the original wound and not just the surgery. They also occur in surgery on the membranous urethra, with it being accepted that they are linked to damage to the peroneal nerves when cutting the bulbocavernous muscle, which would affect semen release mechanisms, and result in shorter penis length during erection (13, 14). Barbagli (15), Jordan (16), and later Andrich (17) designed minimally invasive techniques that preserve the integrity of the muscle surrounding the membranous urethra, or the vascular supply at the bulb level. The goal is to minimise the trauma caused by the dissection and opening of the urethra, thus improving vascular supply and preserving nerve endings that play an important role in erectile and ejaculatory mechanisms.
Other complications in the sexual field are, penile curvature and shortening, the presence of penile hypo and hyperaesthaesia, and cutaneous scarring that affects the aesthetics of the penis. Ventral penile curvature can appear in cases of excessive release of the distal membranous urethra to facilitate a tension free anastomosis. To avoid it, the limit of the suspensory ligament should not be passed, and if tension exists when bringing the sides of the urethra together, it is preferable to use a widening technique with skin or buccal mucosa. Using pedicle flaps of penile skin can cause traction and rotation of the penis, lateral curvature and deforming scars. To try and avoid these complications, great care must be taken over the design and size of the flap, taking into account that it will contract, as well as adequate release of the vascular pedicle to avoid traction.
In our review, 12.6% of patients reported sexual dysfunction problems. In the case of erections, they were treated with PDE5 inhibitors. No treatment was given for other problems.
Other complications. To avoid infections, all the patients received treatment with antibiotics in the immediate pre-operative period. This was maintained for one week at therapeutic doses, and then at minimal doses until the catheter was withdrawn. In our series, five patients presented with an infection of the operation site, and two with a urinary infection. They were all treated by changing the previously administered antibiotic, without needing further treatment.
The appearance of fistulae is usually associated with a defect in the technique or insufficient vascularisation of the graft or flap, which can lead to total or partial necrosis. Often, all that is needed is to extend the catheterisation period until primary closure of the leak. The way to prevent fistulae from appearing depends on being meticulous in applying the technique, sealing the stitches without tension, avoiding overlap, using the tunica dartos to cover them, and by ensuring vascular support to the material that we used as a urethral substitute, whether it be a graft, or as in the case of flaps, by designing large vascular pedicles both in width and length.
In 2000 a retrospective study was published on complications related to lithotomy positioning during urethral reconstruction (18). Up to 10% of problems came from this positioning. They included neuropraxia, Rhabdomyolysis, compartment syndrome and lower back pain. In our study, we found two patients with complications that we considered secondary to lithotomy positioning: One neuropraxia of the peroneal nerve and a pulmonary thromboembolism that was preceded by thrombophlebitis in a lower extremity. To avoid these complications it is fundamental to use low molecular weight heparins during the post-operative period, and using antithromboembolic stockings that do not cause pressure zones during surgery, and that are currently available on most surgical services.
To carry out two stage urethroplasties, buccal mucosa is frequently used when the urethral plate is insufficient or unusable. It is used in such a way that after two to six months it can tubularise, thus rebuilding the urinary meatus. In our experience we have seen two complications. The first is total or partial necrosis of the graft. The etiology is usually a mistake in the vascularisation of the recipient bed. The second is a problem that occurs during the time the buccal mucosa comes into contact with the air. It manifests itself through the appearance of, more or less extensive, areas of fibrosis or keratinisation. They make another operation necessary to remove these areas before final closure.
Conclusions
Urethroplasty is the method chosen to treat urethral strictures, both by anastomosis and by substitution. In our series there were medical or surgical complications in 25% of patients. Sexual dysfunction was the most frequently recorded complication followed by others that, at times required surgical treatment to resolve them, for example in the case of diverticula in the penile or membranous urethra.
Termino-terminal anastomosis was the technique that recorded the lowest rate of complications (16.8%) and recurrence (11.5%). When we used fasicocutaneous flaps at the penile level these rates were 68 and 28% respectively. Using buccal mucosa grafts produced minimum morbidity in the majority of patients.
To avoid complications, preventative measures are necessary using low molecular weight heparins, antibiotherapy and suitable surgical material, including the use of antithromboembolic stockings with no pressure zones. The technique must be meticulously followed when handling grafts and flaps, paying particular attention to mutual vascular and mechanical support.
