Testo originale - Inglese The problem of being awkward with introductions is not, for many, an “unusual situation.” You may find that you are often uncertain about whether to introduce someone using their first name, last name, or both; about whether to use a qualifier (“this is my friend, ______”); even about whether or not it is in fact your responsibility to introduce two people in a given situation. But all of this is small potatoes compared with the seemingly inevitable mingling nightmare of having to introduce someone whose name you have forgotten.
It’s one thing to forget someone’s name if you’ve met them only once or twice, or if you haven’t seen them in a while. But all too often it’s someone whose name you really should know, and who is going to be insulted to find out you don’t. In other words, a faux pas in the making.
This is absolute agony when it happens, and I’ve watched hundreds of minglers try to deal with different ways, ranging from exuberant apology (“Oh GOD, I’m so sorry, JEEZ, wow, I can’t believe I’ve forgotten your name!”) to throwing up their hands and walking away. But there are better ways to deal with this kind of mental slip. Next time you draw a blank while making introductions, try the following ploy:
Force them to introduce themselves. This is the smoothest and most effective way to handle your memory lapse. When it’s done well, no one will ever suspect you. If you have forgotten one person’s name in the group, turn to that person first and smile. Then turn invitingly to a person whose name you do remember and say, “This is Linden Bond,” turning back casually toward the forgotten person. The person whose name you haven’t mentioned yet will automatically (it’s a reflex) say “Nice to meet you, Linden, I’m Sylvia Cooper,” and usually offer a hand to shake.

Magari vi chiedete se spetti proprio a voi l’incombenza delle presentazioni…tutte quisquilie in confronto all’agghiacciante sensazione di vuoto mentale che vi prende quando tentate invano di ricordare un nome che si è volatizzato!
Certo, un conto è non ricordarsi come si chiama una persona incontrata un paio di volte o che non si è vista da un pezzo, e un altro, ahimé, quando quella persona è convinta che vi ricordiate benissimo di lui e non c'è dubbio che ci rimarrà malissimo quando noterà la vostra incertezza. Rischiate di fare una figuraccia tremenda.
Potete ben immaginare quanto sia spiacevole trovarsi in questa situazione! Ne ho visti a bizzeffe di smemorati tentare di togliersi dall’impaccio. Si va dagli esagitati ( Oddio! Scusa, che figura, non è possibile che mi sia dimenticato il tuo nome!”) ai patetici che allargando le braccia scelgono la fuga. Credete a me, il sistema per rimediare ai vuoti mentali e padroneggiare la situazione al meglio esiste. La prossima volta che verrete assaliti dal panico mettete in atto questo stratagemma:
Fate sì che due persone si presentino a vicenda: un trucco semplice semplice per non fare passi falsi! Agite con risolutezza e nessuno fiuterà niente. Il nome della bionda non spunta fuori? Guardatela allora con un bel sorriso, poi, ammiccando, indicatele una persona il cui nome conoscete e con perfetto aplomb dite “Le presento Luca Boldini”. Il gioco è fatto! Automaticamente tenderà la mano dicendo : “Sono Silvia Rossi, piacere di conoscerla!”

Edward Hopper is famous and hardly known. The images of the American painter are widely loved and published, in posters, postcards, picture books.
We think we know them, these poignant myths of modern solitude - the lonely rooms, late bars, anonymous lobbies, isolated gas stations, empty streets. But how many have seen a Hopper face to face? There is (I'd guess) not a single Hopper painting in a British collection. There hasn't been a Hopper exhibition here for 20 years. On Thursday Edward Hopper opens at Tate Modern, a full retrospective, showing through the summer. You may be surprised.
In reproduction, the pictures look good, and they look like they don't lose much either. Hopper's enigmatic theatre comes across so strongly. You get his elusive human stories, never spelled out, and his dreamlike settings that are strangely under-described, as if made from a few clearly remembered details, and always with something more, unseen, off-picture. You see his dramatic illumination, shafts of sunlight striking onto walls, electric-lit rooms glowing out of the night, and his bold colours and designs. And you can probably tell, if you look through a picture book, that Hopper's painting goes off. The figures become clumsier, the dramas less sharp.
But in front of the paintings, all these things are changed. The pictures have a direct visual-emotional impact that reproduction never hints at. Or rather, some of them do. And many others, often the ones that seem most atmospheric in reproduction, even the classics like Nighthawks and Office at Night, conspicuously fail as paintings.
So the surprise isn't quite what you'd expect. It doesn't go one way. It's not that Hoppers turn out to be generally better in actuality, nor that they're better as illustrations. No, the odd thing is, his work has a stark double life. There are pictures that are good as posters, but bad as paintings. And there are pictures you might flip past in a book, but on the wall they're utterly gripping, piercing.
Hopper found form late. A New Yorker, born in 1882, he spent a long time being a bit of an artist and a bit of a commercial illustrator and for about 10 years gave up painting almost entirely. In 1924 he began to paint again. Immediately the work arrives in full force. In the pictures from the 1920s and the early 1930s, Hopper's world is there complete - in Early Sunday Morning, say, a deserted stretch of street, in Drug Store, a lit shop window at night, and in other nocturnes like Automat, a woman alone in a café, or Night Windows, a woman fragmentarily glimpsed in an upstairs room. And these are the paintings that have the real presence.
The colours here are so startling, with quite unexpected harmonies and intensities. More than that, the colour schemes attune with the mood and space of the scenes. Take a picture like Sunday, a bald man sitting on a sidewalk in front of some closed shops. In Hopper books I've glanced at this image, barely pausing over its dull greys and browns, marking it down as a dud. But in its true colours, it's a spellbinder. The vacant wooden shop-fronts, the air in front of them, are alive with a mesmeric emptiness and blankness.
It's a spell that later pictures very rarely recapture. Hopper worked on for decades, dying in 1967. There's painting after painting in Tate Modern where a promising scene is set, but without that true grip of colour and space and feeling. It can suddenly reappear, as in the very late Intermission, a woman sitting alone in an emptied auditorium, with a great void of blue wall behind. It's striking how clear the difference is. But to describe this spell precisely, let alone account for it, is tricky. All the usual stuff about loneliness, sadness, alienation - it's not exactly wrong, but it feels off the point.
Some things about a good Hopper are plain. There must be no more than one figure, a single consciousness to focus the feeling of the space. It's rather as in Munch's The Scream, where you can't say whether the figure is screaming the sky, or the sky is screaming the figure. In Hopper's more muted images, scene and figure absorb one another. It must be only one figure, one mind absorbed. The pictures from the 1940s, like Nighthawks, resembling movie-stills, lose it. Several figures - and at once there's a drama, an interaction among people, a distraction from the central relationship between the figure and the place.
It's important this one figure has no strong expression. The face should be composed, or even hidden, looking away, lost in shadow. It's not about how people are feeling, sad or lonely or ill at ease or whatever. It's about a state of going deeply blank, about becoming a thing in a world of things. This is the real reason why the figure must be alone. There must be nobody else to see them as a fellow human. And this is why Hopper puts his solitary figures in public places, in a street or an auditorium or a café, in places where they might well be on view. It's to emphasise that they aren't. The young woman sits with her coffee in Automat, glaringly lit, and unseen. No one is looking at her.
No one: not even you, the viewer.
That's the weirdest effect. I don't how Hopper gets it. The things in the pictures look like things that aren't being looked at. The man or woman is completely, completely alone. As you look at them, you feel that your viewpoint is unoccupied, that you aren't there. It's a scene without a viewer.

Edward Hopper è famosissimo e allo stesso tempo sconosciuto: le immagini del pittore americano sono amate dai più e ampiamente diffuse su poster, cartoline e libri. Osservando quelle stanze spoglie e malinconiche, i bar notturni, i locali anonimi, i distributori di benzina che si ergono come protagonisti del paesaggio e le strade deserte si crede di afferrare il senso drammatico che queste icone della solitudine dell’uomo moderno trasmettono. Ma in quanti hanno visto un quadro di Hopper da vicino? Che io sappia non vi è un singolo dipinto nelle collezioni inglesi, e l’ultima mostra risale a ben venti anni fa. Giovedì prossimo vi sarà l’inaugurazione della retrospettiva completa di Edward Hopper alla galleria Tate, che si protrarrà per tutta l’estate. Ci sarà da stupirsi.
I quadri di Hopper vengono così bene nelle riproduzioni che non sembra neanche che ci perdano. Vi si avverte con forza il senso enigmatico del suo teatro, si coglie l’elusività di storie di uomini mai svolte del tutto, inserite in ambientazioni oniriche, come abbozzi di scene scaturite dal ricordo di pochi particolari ben impressi nella memoria e nelle quali si intuisce sempre la presenza di qualche elemento non visibile fuori dai confini della tela. La luce è d’effetto: raggi di sole a fascio colpiscono i muri, stanze illuminate dalla luce elettrica paiono fari nella notte. I colori e le forme sono decisi e anche sui libri si può intuire che la scena continua oltre i limiti della tela, con le figure tratteggiate in modo più sommario e l’intensità del dramma in calo. Ma di fronte alle opere cambia tutto, perché le stesse immagini producono un impatto visivo ed emotivo che le riproduzioni non riescono a dare neanche lontanamente. O meglio, alcune sì mentre la maggior parte, spesso proprio quelle che su stampa sembrano le più cariche di atmosfera, perfino i più famosi come Nighthawks e Office at Night, come quadri non rendono affatto. La sorpresa perciò non è esattamente quella che uno si aspetta, le cose non procedono a senso unico: non si può dire che i lavori di Hopper siano generalmente migliori come originali o come riproduzioni. No, il fatto strano è che è la sua produzione possiede due vite parallele, con certi quadri belli come stampe e brutte come quadri e altre che se viste in un libro fanno girar subito pagina mentre appese al muro si rivelano estremamente coinvolgenti.
In Hopper alcune caratteristiche sono imprescindibili: ci deve essere una sola figura umana, una unica coscienza che assorba in sé la consapevolezza dello spazio circostante. E' un po' come ne "L'urlo" di Munch , dove non sai se è la figura che urla il cielo o il cielo urla la figura. Nelle immagini, più mute, di Hopper paesaggio e figura si assorbono l'uno con l'altro. La figura umana rappresenta la mente che assorbe e deve rimanere perciò unica. I lavori eseguiti dopo gli anni '40, come "Nighthawks", reminiscenti dei fotogrammi di un film, perdono questa peculiarità a causa della compresenza di diverse figure che da’ luogo all'intreccio drammatico e all'interazione tra le persone, e distrae perciò dal rapporto centrale tra figura e luogo.
Occorre poi che questa unica figura non abbia un'espressione precisa. Il suo volto deve essere composto, nascosto perfino, rivolto verso qualcosa di lontano, perso nell'ombra. Non si tratta di sapere come si sentano le persone, se siano tristi o sole, sofferenti, a loro agio o in altra maniera. Si tratta di renderle talmente assenti da farle diventare una cosa in un mondo di cose. E questo è il vero motivo per il quale la figura umana deve essere sola, non può esserci nessun altro che possa individuare in essa un'altra persona. Per questo Hopper colloca le sue figure solitarie in luoghi pubblici, strade, auditorium o bar che siano, tutti posti dove sono bene in vista. Lo fa per enfatizzare il fatto che non sono lì! La giovane donna seduta con la tazza di caffè in "Automat" è messa in risalto da bagliori di luce, ma non è guardata. Nessuno la vede.
Nessuno, neanche tu che sei lo spettatore.
Questo è l'effetto più strano e non so come Hopper lo ottenga. Ogni uomo o donna che ritrae è sempre completamente solo. Le cose viste in un suo quadro sono cose non viste. Le guardi ed hai l'impressione che il tuo punto di vista resti vuoto, che tu non ci sia. Sono scene prive di un osservatore.

Three years after the devastating US assault, our correspondent enters
besieged Iraqi city left without clean water, electricity and medicine

Fallujah is more difficult to enter than any city in the world. On the
road from Baghdad I counted 27 checkpoints, all manned by well-armed
soldiers and police. "The siege is total," says Dr Kamal in Fallujah
Hospital as he grimly lists his needs, which include everything from
drugs and oxygen to electricity and clean water.
The last time I tried to drive to Fallujah, several years ago, I was
caught in the ambush of an American fuel convoy and had to crawl out of
the car and lie beside the road with the driver while US soldiers and
guerrillas exchanged gunfire. The road is now much safer but nobody is
allowed to enter Fallujah who does not come from there and can prove it
through elaborate identity documents. The city has been sealed off since
November 2004 when United States Marines stormed it in an attack that
left much of the city in ruins.
Its streets, with walls pock-marked with bullets and buildings reduced
to a heap of concrete slabs, still look as if the fighting had finished
only a few weeks ago.
I went to look at the old bridge over the Euphrates from whose steel
girders Fallujans had hanged the burnt bodies of two American private
security men killed by guerrillas – the incident that sparked the first
battle of Fallujah. The single-lane bridge is still there, overlooked by
the remains of a bombed or shelled building whose smashed roof overhangs
the street and concrete slabs are held in place by rusty iron mesh.
The police chief of Fallujah, Colonel Feisal Ismail Hassan al-Zubai, was
trying to show that his city was on the mend.
As we looked at the bridge a small crowd gathered and an elderly man in
a brown coat shouted: "We have no electricity, we have no water."
Others confirmed that Fallujah was getting one hour's electricity a day.
Colonel Feisal said there was not much he could do about the water or
electricity though he did promise a man that a fence of razor wire
outside his restaurant would be removed.
Fallujah may be better than it was, but it still has a very long way to
go. Hospital doctors confirm that they are receiving few gunshot or bomb
blast victims since the Awakening movement drove al-Qa'ida from the city
over the past six months, but people still walk warily in the streets as
if they expected firing to break out at any minute.
Colonel Feisal, a former officer in Saddam Hussein's Special Forces,
cheerfully admits that before he was chief of police, "I was fighting
the Americans". His brother Abu Marouf, a former guerrilla commander,
controls 13,000 fighters of the anti-al-Qa'ida Awakening movement in and
around Fallujah. The colonel stressed that the streets of Fallujah were
now wholly safe but his convoy drove at speed and was led by a
policeman, his face hidden by a white balaclava, on top of a vehicle
holding a machine gun and frantically gesturing oncoming vehicles out of
the way.
The police station is large and protected by concrete and earth
barriers. Just as we reached the inner courtyard we saw signs that the
battle against al-Qa'ida may be over but arrests go on. From another
part of the police station there emerged a line of 20 prisoners, each
with his eyes covered by a white blindfold, gripping the back of the
clothes of the prisoner in front of him. The prisoners reminded me of
photographs of men blinded by gas in the First World War stumbling along
behind a single man who could see and who, in this case, was a prison guard.
There are new buildings in the main street. I used to eat at a kebab
restaurant called Haji Hussein, which was one of the best in Iraq. Then,
as the occupation went on, I started attracting a lot of hostile stares.
The manager suggested it might be safer if I ate upstairs in an empty
room, and soon after it was destroyed by an American bomb. It has now
been rebuilt in gaudy colours and seemed to be doing good business.
At one time Fallujah had a population of 600,000, but none of the
officials in the city seemed to know how many there are now. Col Feisal
is hopeful of investment and took us to a white, new building called the
Fallujah Business Development Centre, which had been partly funded by a
branch of the US State Department. Tall American soldiers were guarding
a business development conference. "It has attracted one American
investor so far," said a uniformed American adviser hopefully. "My name
is Sarah and I am in psychological operations," said another US officer
and proudly showed us around a newly established radio Fallujah.
At the other end of the city we crossed over the iron bridge built in
about 1930 and now the only link with the far side of the Euphrates.
There is a modern bridge half a mile down river but it has been taken
over by the American army and, say locals, used as a vehicle park. On
the far side of the bridge, past beds of tall bullrushes where people
escaping the city during the sieges of 2004 tried to hide, there is a
building eviscerated by bombs on one side of the road. On the other side
is the hospital whose officials US commanders used to accuse of
systematically exaggerating the number of those killed by American bombing.
When I asked what the hospital lacked Dr Kamal said wearily: "Drugs,
fuel, electricity, generators, a water treatment system, oxygen and
medical equipment." It was difficult not to think that American
assistance might have gone to the hospital rather than the business
development centre.
Colonel Feisal said things were getting better but he was mobbed by
black-clad women shouting that their children had not been treated.
"Every day 20 children die here," said one. "Seven in this very room."
The doctors said that they were tending their patients as best they
could. "The Americans provide us with nothing," said one mother who was
cradling a child. "They bring us only destruction."

E’ più difficile entrare a Fallujah che in qualsiasi altra città del mondo. Per la strada proveniente da Bagdad ho contato 27 posti di blocco, tutti sorvegliati da soldati e poliziotti ben armati . “L’assedio è totale” dice, scuro in volto, il dott. Kamal all’ospedale di Fallujah, mentre stila la lista di ciò che gli occorrerebbe, che comprende di tutto, dalle medicine all’ossigeno e dall’elettricità all’acqua pulita.
L’ultima volta che tentai di entrare a Fallujah in macchina, diversi anni fa, rimasi coinvolto nell’imboscata ad un convoglio americano che trasportava carburante, e dovetti uscire dall’auto a carponi e sdraiarmi sul ciglio della strada insieme all’autista, mentre tra soldati americani e guerriglieri si era aperto il fuoco. La strada adesso è molto più sicura ma a nessuno è concesso di entrare a Fallujah fuorché ai residenti in grado di comprovare che vivono là mediante documenti d’identità dettagliati . La città è isolata dal novembre del 2004, quando i Marines americani vi irruppero con un attacco che l’ha lasciata per la maggior parte in rovina.
Le strade, con i muri butterati dai segni delle pallottole e con gli edifici ridotti ad un cumulo di lastre di cemento, appaiono ancora come se il combattimento fosse cessato da poche settimane.
Sono andato a vedere il vecchio ponte sull’Eufrate dalle cui travi d’acciaio i falluiani avevano impiccato i corpi bruciati di due guardie private americane addette alla sicurezza, uccise dai guerriglieri – l’incidente che fu la scintilla che provocò la prima battaglia di Fallujah. Il ponte, a corsia unica, c’è ancora ed è sovrastato dalle rovine di un edificio bombardato o colpito da granate, il cui tetto, in frantumi, si allunga sulla strada mentre una rete di ferro arrugginita tiene insieme lastroni di cemento.
Il capo della polizia di Fallujah, il colonnello Feisal Ismail Hassan al-Zubai, ha cercato di far vedere che la sua città sta facendo progressi.
Mentre guardavamo il ponte una piccola folla si è radunata . Un anziano col cappotto marrone ha strillato: “non abbiamo l’elettricità, non abbiamo l’acqua!”
Altri hanno confermato che a Fallujah la corrente elettrica c’è per un’ora al giorno. Il colonnello Feisal ha detto che non poteva far molto riguardo ad acqua ed elettricità, ma ha promesso ad un uomo di togliere lo sbarramento fatto col filo metallico davanti al suo ristorante.
Fallujah se la passa forse meglio di prima, ma di strada da fare ne rimane tanta. I medici dell’ospedale confermano che sono diminuiti gli arrivi di vittime di sparatorie o esplosioni di bombe da quando il Movimento Awakening ha espluso al-Qa’ida dalla città negli ultimi sei mesi, ma la gente cammina ancora con cautela per le strade, come se si aspettasse che da un momento all’altro una sparatoria abbia inizio.
Il colonnello Feisal, un ex ufficiale delle Forze Speciali di Saddam Hussein, ammette gioiosamente che prima di essere a capo della polizia “combatteva gli americani”. Suo fratello Abu Marouf, un tempo al comando della guerriglia, controlla 13.000 combattenti del Movimento anti al-Qa’ida Awakening, dentro e attorno a Fallujah. Il colonnello ha precisato che le strade di Fallujah non sono proprio sicure, ma il suo convoglio marcia veloce ed è condotto da un poliziotto con il volto coperto da un passamontagna bianca, che da sopra il veicolo e con in mano il fucile intima ai veicoli in arrivo di togliersi di mezzo gesticolando in modo frenetico.
Il commissariato di polizia è un locale ampio e protetto da barriere fatte con cemento e terra. Appena raggiunto il cortile interno abbiamo visto dei cartelli che dicevano che se la battaglia contro al-Qa’ida era finita non li erano però gli arresti. Da un’altra parte del commissariato è apparsa una fila di venti prigionieri, ognuno con gli occhi coperti da una benda bianca e aggrappato ai vestiti del prigioniero davanti. Quei prigionieri mi hanno ricordato le fotografie degli uomini che furono accecati dal gas durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale e che arrancavano dietro un uomo che invece ci vedeva e che era, in quel caso, un secondino della prigione.
Ci sono edifici nuovi sulla via principale. A mangiare andavo in un locale che fa kebab che si chiamava HajiHussein ed era uno dei migliori in Iraq. Ma col perdurare dell’occupazione ho cominciato ad attirare sguardi ostili, e il proprietario mi ha consigliato di mangiare al piano di sopra, in una stanza vuota, per sicurezza; poco dopo il locale è stato distrutto da una bomba americana. Adesso è stato ricostruito e dipinto con colori sgargianti, e sembra che gli affari vadano bene.
Un tempo Fallujah contava 600.000 abitanti: nessuno degli ufficiali in città sembra essere a conoscenza del numero attuale. Il colonnello Feisal è speranzoso riguardo agli investimenti e ci ha portato a vedere un nuovo edificio bianco chiamato Fallujah Business Development Centre, finanziato in parte da una divisione dello US State Department . Alcuni soldati americani alti stavano presidiando una conferenza sullo sviluppo economico. “Ha attratto un investitore americano finora” mi ha detto un consulente americano in divisa, con tono di speranza. “Io sono Sarah e mi occupo di interventi psicologici” mi ha detto un’altra funzionaria statunitense, che ci ha mostrato tutta fiera la nuova Radio Fallujah che aveva appena preso il via.
Dall’altra parte della città abbiamo attraversato il ponte di ferro costruito intorno al 1930 , che rappresenta adesso l’unico collegamento con l’altra sponda dell’Eufrate. Esiste un ponte moderno mezzo miglio in giù sul fiume ma l’esercito americano se ne è impossessato e lo usa, a sentire la gente del posto, come parcheggio per i veicoli. Dall’altra parte del ponte, passate le file di alti giunchi dove coloro che scappavano dalla città durante gli assedi del 2004 provavano a nascondersi, c’è un edificio sventrato dalle bombe dal lato della strada. Dall’altro c’è l’ospedale i cui dirigenti sono stati accusati dai comandanti americani di gonfiare sistematicamente il numero delle vittime del bombardamento americano.
Quando ho domandato cosa manca all’ospedale il dott. Kamal mi ha risposto: “medicine, combustibile, elettricità, generatori di corrente, un sistema per il trattamento delle acque, ossigeno e attrezzatura medica.” Difficile non pensare che l’aiuto americano sarebbe stato meglio diretto verso l’ospedale anziché il centro per lo sviluppo economico…
Il colonnello Feisal ha detto che le cose stavano andando meglio, ma intanto era accerchiato da donne vestite di nero che gridavano che i loro bambini non erano stati curati.
“Ogni giorno 20 bambini muoiono qua” , ha detto una di loro, “Sette proprio in questa stanza.”
I medici hanno detto che si prendono cura dei loro pazienti meglio che possono. “Gli americani non ci procurano nulla” ha detto una madre che cullava un bambino, “portano solo distruzione”.

After graduating in art history at the University of Rome I continued my studies for one year at Boston Univerisity. I taught Italian to adults in the States and was a primary school teacher in England for eight years. While teaching has been my main career activity until recently, I now plan to make translation work my primary vocation. My writing skills have resulted in my having regularly published letters in major newspapers both in England and in Italy. I recently won the Third ProZ Translation Contest for English to Italian.
