I miss Armenia, and must tell you an interesting little story. When my wife goes shopping, she always buys a special plant for me to put in my salad. We call it celantro (also spelled cilantro) or Chinese parsley. The scientific name is Coriandrum sativum. Probably it originated in Asia Minor. I am sorry I do not know the name in Russian or in Armenian. I first became aware of this delicious plant in Armenia. Now each time I eat it, I think of Armenia.

Source text - English Using genetic and structural analysis, we documented 51 species of black flies in the country and demonstrated that about 20% of these species are known only from Armenia. The species of fungi that live in the digestive tracts of Armenian black flies, however, are all widespread, with none unique to Armenia. We found that the major streams and rivers in Armenia, such as the Hrazdan river, continue to receive domestic and industrial pollutants that often significantly exceed the maximum permissible concentrations for drinking water.

Source text - Russian Критической проблемой для республики является загрязнение природных водоемов промышленными, сельскохозяйственными и бытовыми стоками. За последние десять лет негативное влияние на реки оказaли интенсивные мелиоративные преобразования, а также сооружениe искусственных водоёмов для разведения рыб. В результате этого изменены русла и направления рек и, соответственно, их физико-химические параметры. Состав водной фауны, доминирующим элементом которой являются мошки, связан с качеством воды. Наличие и численность мошек являются хорошим показателем экологического состояния рек.
Translation - English Pollution of natural waters from industrial, agricultural, and domestic sources is a critical problem for the Republic. For the past ten years, intensive land reclamation, as well as reservoir building for fish breeding, has negatively impacted streams and rivers. As a result, the courses of the rivers have changed and so, too, have the physicochemical characteristics. The composition of the aquatic fauna, of which black flies are dominant, is related to water quality. The presence and abundance of black flies are good indicators of the ecological conditions of rivers.
