Definition / notes:	(Method used in the first trimester). Sharp curettage empties the uterus by scraping it with curettes (metal instruments). Other terms for sharp curettage include: dilatation or dilation and curettage (D&C) and surgical abortion. Sharp curettage is performed using mechanical dilators to open the cervix and metal curettes to scrape the uterine walls. This procedure generally requires heavy sedation or general anesthesia and, because of increased risk of complications, should only be used when neither vacuum aspiration nor medication abortion is available.
