Never accept payment by cheques. Never.
Use Paypal.

Yes, great advice!
(Alternatively, you may want to google "PayPal scams" or make a search in this very group.)

That only happened because you gave her your bank details. There are two basic principles everyone should follow:

1. Never give a new client your bank details until AFTER YOU HAVE DELIVERED THE COMPLETED TRANSLATION.

2. NEVER ACCEPT PAYMENT IN ADVANCE from a new client.

"NEVER ACCEPT PAYMENT IN ADVANCE from a new client." makes no sense.

About as much sense as telling a market trader "never accept cash because it might be counterfeit.

What does make sense:

be wary of "potential clients" coming out of the blue who are all too eager to pay in advance, that are more concerned about payment than about the work that needs to be done.

When you have established that the client is real, and you have no inclination to act as a bank giving a loan with no guaranties whatsoever / you would rather indulge in some hobby of yours 2-3-... days instead of taking stupid risks of working for nothing, you do need a payment in advance.

But then, as always, the devil is in the details.

A "payment" by depositing a cheque IS NOT a payment - it's only "a potential payment" waiting for confirmation (cheque being cleared). No real client would resort to this kind of tricks. It's up to you to know the banking system in your own country (no one is going to do your homework for you) and know which payment methods you are willing to accept.
