how can I display the source segment on top of the target segment ?
( as opposed to a side by side arrangement)

If you go to the View ribbon, you will find the drop-down button "Active Row". Pull the button and choose "In The Middle (horizontal)".

Just to give it a try, you can cycle through the different screen layouts with F11 and choose the one you like best.
