"社会透支" Aug 21

QHE,

Thanks a lot for your wonderful research and the very useful links resulting from it.

My initial reaction to the term "wealth deficits" read "富有导致的社会弊病", but on second thought I edited it out for fear of too much generalization. Now it seems I should have just left it alone because somehow it came closer.

"Wealth deficits", "富裕导致的社会透支"?

Steve,

I'm really glad you found the references useful. I think the phrase "富裕导致的社会透支" most definitely conveys the implied meaning in the given context. It would be interesting to know what exactly the original Chinese term of "wealth deficits" might be.

Gig Workers and the Gig Economy Aug 21

http://money.cnn.com/2017/08/17/pf/jobs/gig-worker/index.html

So you're thinking of jumping on the gig economy bandwagon.

These days "gig workers" aren't just Uber drivers or Taskrabbits. They also include freelancers, contractors, consultants and on-demand workers -- basically anyone who is working on a temporary basis.

The gig economy now makes up about 34% of the U.S. workforce, according to Intuit. That's expected to grow to 43% -- or 7.7 million people -- by 2020.Maybe you're turning to the gig economy out of necessity. Or you're hoping to work on your own terms and get a better work-life balance.

But making the transition from being a full-time employee to gig worker isn't easy. You'll need to restructure your finances to ensure income security and make sure you're not selling yourself short.

So if you're thinking of ditching your nine-to-five job for the gig economy, here are some things to keep in mind.

Trivia Aug 21

https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/why-do-eclipse-tracks-move-eastward-even-though-earth-rotates-west-east

Why do eclipse tracks move eastward even though the Earth rotates from west to east?

Because the Moon moves to the east in its orbit at about 3,400 km/hour. Earth rotates to the east at 1,670 km/hr at the equator, so the lunar shadow moves to the east at 3,400 – 1,670 = 1,730 km/hr near the equator. You cannot keep up with the shadow of the eclipse unless you traveled at Mach 1.5.

NASA Solar Eclipse 101 Videos Aug 21

https://youtu.be/nKoSf4PA_ws
The Moon moves right to left in its orbit around the Earth. The shadow it casts hits the Earth during the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse.

https://youtu.be/14BOImWF9SM
The Moon orbits the Earth in the months prior to the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse. Viewed from above, the Moon's shadow appears to cross the Earth every month, but a side view reveals the five-degree tilt of the Moon's orbit. Its shadow only hits the Earth when the line of nodes, the fulcrum of its orbital tilt, is pointed toward the Sun.

Totality zone in Wyoming Aug 21

wherestip wrote:

Yueyin,

Any plans to travel north to see the total eclipse? Where you are the eclipse is probably going to be in the 90% area.

I'm staying put. In Austin we're going to be able to observe a 66% eclipse. I figure the sky's going to darken a bit, like having some cloud coverage on a sunny day.

Steve,

No, I am not going to although it's only less than 200 miles for me to drive to the totality zone (Glendo, WY). Heavy traffic is a great concern. On the other hand, all the hotels in Casper, Wyoming, would charge at least $1,000 per night!

http://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/eclipse-day-traffic-begins-to-stack-up-skies-clear-in/article_e2a5a057-2076-528a-b4f7-d4b4d2e5395e.html
Skies are clear and traffic is stacking up across the state.

Hi Guys,

Once in a life time, I am ahead of you guys, being on the US West coast! Saw the Eclipse already. While everybody is looking up into the sky, I am looking at the marvelous shadows on the ground, and this is what I saw:

The path of totality Aug 21

http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/21/us/next-total-solar-eclipse-2024/index.html

Missed the eclipse today? America's next one is in 2024

...

If you weren't able to see one of the most anticipated and unifying events this country has witnessed in nearly a hundred years, don't worry. You won't have to wait an entire century until the next one -- just seven years. Another total solar eclipse will be visible in the United States on April 8, 2024.

Traveling a different path from the 2017 eclipse, the total eclipse will be visible in Mexico, the central US and east Canada, with a partial eclipse visible across North and Central America.

Although Monday's eclipse was peaking over two minutes in the path of totality, the 2024 eclipse will have peaks of 4½ minutes. In the United States, it will be visible in a diagonal path crossing from Texas to Maine, according to NASA.

Cities like Austin, Texas; Dallas; Little Rock, Arkansas; Indianapolis; Toledo, Cleveland and Akron, Ohio; Buffalo and Rochester, New York; Montpelier, Vermont; and Montreal will be directly in the path of totality.

Like you said, it could be 富贵病. But then the use of the word "deficit" seems to be a bit out of place.

David,

It suddenly hit me. I wonder if the English name "wealth deficits" could have originated from "财政透支", "资本透支", or something similar in meaning?

You know how some folks like to use something irrelevant to refer to some other thing entirely different just to be sarcastic/humorous? My guess is this might be one of those cases.

[Edited at 2017-08-19 14:28 GMT]
