English to Persian (Farsi): History of the Medes Monarchy General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: History
Source text - English The origin of the Median nation is wrapt in a profound obscurity. Following the traces which the Zendavesta offers, taking into consideration its minute account of the earlier Arian migrations, its entire omission of any mention of the Medes, and the undoubted fact that it was nevertheless by the Medes and Persians that the document itself was preserved and transmitted to us, we should be naturally led to suppose that the race was one which in the earlier times of Arian development was weak and insignificant, and that it first pushed itself into notice after the ethnological portions of the Zendavesta were composed, which is thought to have been about B.C. 1000.
English to Persian (Farsi): Kirkuk and disputed areas General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English The future stability of Iraq depends on a peaceful resolution to the deeply divisive issue of Kirkuk. Kirkuk, both city and governorate, form part of the so-called “disputed territories” – a swathe of territories spread across northern Iraq where oil, symbolism, and ethnicities collide. Populated by Kurds, Turkmens, and Arabs (along with smaller numbers of Chaldo-Assyrian Christians), the disputed territories are claimed by the Kurds as part of their autonomous Kurdistan Region; this claim, in turn, is bitterly contested by the region’s other ethnic groups. While many of the territories in dispute have the capacity to generate friction among ethnic groups in the North, none approaches the complexity and emotive significance of Kirkuk. For Kurds, Kirkuk is, as one Kurdish leader described it, the “Kurdish Jerusalem”; for Turkmens, Kirkuk is, and always has been, a Turkmen city that binds together an imagined community of Turkmens in Iraq (the “Turkmeneli”) stretching from the Iranian border in the east to the Syrian border in the west; finally, for Arabs, Kirkuk is a distinctly Iraqi city that symbolizes Iraq’s national identity as a coherent and unified multiethnic state; as such, it belongs to no one ethnic group. Alongside its oil riches and its ethnic diversity, it is Kirkuk’s symbolic significance that sets it apart from other disputed territories.
