The quotes cited are really interesting and make me curious of finding the books. My point is Anita's saying "Listen good." should not be translated "Dengar baik-baik" for if it is translated so, the character the author wants to implicitly convey will not be well accepted by the readers unless the readers read the source books. In characterizing the characters, the author may do it by using the speech used by the characters, performance etc. It will be fatal if we translate "Listen good" to "De... See more

In characterizing the characters, the author may do it by using the speech used by the characters, performance etc. It will be fatal if we translate "Listen good" to "Dengar baik-baik"" for it does not reflect who Anita is, the background etc. It should be translated "Dengar baik.", so it will reflect the real character of Anita. For Indonesian readers, there will be no difference if we translate the sentence "Dengar baik-baik". The readers catch that Anita is an educated person while she is not actually.Collapse
