Source text - English MALE VOICE (GAY) Channel 8. Age: 34.
1. When Martin couldn’t deal with things he lashed out, and I became the thing that was lashed out upon.
2. He was obstinate, fierce, angry, uncontrolled, he did what he wanted.
3. But underneath that, he was completely lost and not in touch with himself or able to communicate emotion or feeling.
4. He was all the things that I don’t think I am, and yet he was someone that I thought I was in love with.
5. In that relationship I became the carer. I don’t know why, I thought that… he was someone who was hurt and I could really be there for him.
6. For some time I told myself that the violence happened because he felt he could do those things to me and it was my job to accept that.
7. In a way I thought I was getting what I deserved. But after a while, I decided that if I continued like that I wouldn’t survive.
8. There was something attractive and exciting about the drama of being in such a dangerous relationship. It was very up and down. Heart racing one minute and then anti-climax.
9. The physical violence was so specifically directed at me, it was an energy that was all focused on me. There was an emotional rush, an elation, and then what came afterwards – the making up bit – was kind of like a drug.
10. I guess I felt this heightened adrenaline and sense of being alive.
11. I was suddenly more aware of my body and my breath and that I was a physical, visceral being.
12. There was something terrifying about the intensity of the violence.
13. The adrenalin of what happens physically in those moments sets off things in the body, which I have never experienced before… and I don’t even understand now.
14. That physical touch does something and then as you come down you are very vulnerable.
15. I was confused - I didn’t know what was happening in my body, or what was going on in my head. It was all very turbulent and alluring at the same time.
16. You become locked into this cycle where you believe that only you and the other person understand what is going on.
17. I didn’t have the words for what was happening.
18. Part of me thought ‘this is life. Life happens. Sometimes there are good things and sometimes there are bad things.’
19. There was a sort of exhilaration, but alongside that was this deep, deep shame and fear. I was ashamed that I was letting this happen to me and I couldn’t communicate it to anybody else.
20. There were points in the relationship when I thought I really knew Martin, but as we moved through it I realised I didn’t know him at all because he was incredibly deceitful. There was always a reason for everything he did, but as we went on the goalposts would shift and the stories would change –
21. I think that’s because he didn’t know what the truth was.
22. There weren’t really any feelings.
23. I didn’t feel like I could tell anyone. I didn’t have the words for what was happening.
24. I didn’t feel I could explain it in a way that anyone else would understand, so there was no point in trying.
25. At the same time I didn’t feel like I could ask for help.
26. Even though I knew something was wrong I didn’t want to admit it.
27. I lost contact with all my friends and I’ll never be close to those people again.
28. At work I thought I appeared on top of things, but when I look back at photographs of that time, I see that I was really thin. I wasn’t sleeping properly. I was very hyperactive at work, and then as I went home the fear would set in.
29. The last time it happened he strangled me until I passed out.
30. When I came to he was stood over me saying ‘I’m going to have to go, I’ve done it again’, or something like that.
31. I felt so exhausted, like, mentally and physically, and I felt I can’t get up, I don’t want to get up.
32. The week after that happened I went to bed every night thinking, ‘I’d rather not be here, I’d rather be dead’.
33. There was just the need to leave, and it was frustrating because I couldn’t move forward. I felt I needed to go – I thought ‘I can’t be here’.
34. I had lost all sense of who I was and I only understood myself in relationship to Martin. I thought that violent relationship was just a part of my life.
35. But then when I started to think about leaving I began to realise that none of it was about me.
36. Martin wasn’t at all interested in who I was.
37. There was this huge realisation that I had let go of almost every element of myself.
38. Then I had to claw that back.
39. I realised that I had lost everyone I was close to.
40. They didn’t understand what was happening to me and so I felt we would never be able to connect in the same way again.
41. I’m 34 now and I feel a huge disconnect from other people my own age and younger because I don’t think many people have experienced that kind of intensity of loss of self.
42. Having been in a place where I really didn’t want to be alive any more because of the suffering I was going through, I have a different perspective on death.
43. But because of all this I have a desire to live and to appreciate life in a way that I didn’t before and I am trying not to let that go.

2. Er war stur, heftig, wütend, unkontrolliert und er tat, was wollte.
3. Doch tief in seinem Inneren war er vollkommen verloren, hatte keinen Kontakt mehr zu sich selbst und konnte weder seine Emotionen noch seine Gefühle zum Ausdruck bringen.
4. Er war all das, was ich wahrscheinlich nicht bin, und doch glaubte ich, dass ich in ihn verliebt war.
5. Ich wurde in unserer Beziehung zum Pfleger. Ich weiß nicht warum, ich dachte ... er war jemand, der verletzt war, und ich konnte wirklich für ihn da sein.
6. Für eine Weile sagte ich mir, dass er so gewalttätig war, weil er das Gefühl hatte, er konnte mir das antun, und dass es meine Aufgabe war, das zu akzeptieren.
7. Auf eine Art dachte ich, dass ich bekam, was ich verdiente. Doch irgendwann merkte ich, dass ich es nicht überleben würde, wenn das so weiter ging.
8. Das Drama, das mit einer so gefährlichen Beziehung einhergeht, hat etwas Anziehendes und Aufregendes. Es ging ständig auf und ab. In einem Moment raste der Puls, im nächsten gab es die Ernüchterung.
9. Die körperliche Gewalt war ganz direkt auf mich ausgerichtet, die gesamte Energie konzentrierte sich auf mich. Ich empfand eine emotionale Erregung, ein Hochgefühl, und was danach kam – die Versöhnung – war eine Art Droge.
10. Ich spürte wahrscheinlich das viele Adrenalin und hatte das Gefühl, lebendig zu sein.
11. Mein Körperbewusstsein war auf einmal größer, ich spürte meinen Atem und dass ich ein Wesen aus Fleisch und Blut war.
12. Die Intensität der Gewalt hatte etwas Furchteinflößendes.
13. Das Adrenalin, das in solchen Situationen entsteht, löst im Körper Dinge aus, die ich noch nie zuvor erlebt habe ... und die ich auch jetzt noch nicht verstehe.
14. Irgendetwas geht da vor im Körper, und wenn du wieder runterkommst, bist du sehr verletzlich.
15. Ich war verwirrt – ich wusste weder was in meinem Körper geschah noch was in meinem Kopf vor sich ging. Es war alles aufreibend und gleichzeitig auch verlockend.
16. Du gerätst in einen Teufelskreis und glaubst, dass nur du und die andere Person wissen, was vor sich geht.
17. Ich konnte nicht erklären, was da geschah.
18. Ein Teil von mir dachte, das ist das Leben. So spielt das Leben eben. Manchmal gibt es gute Zeiten und manchmal schlechte.
19. Da war eine Art Heiterkeit, aber gleichzeitig waren da auch abgrundtiefe Scham und Angst. Ich schämte mich, dass ich zuließ, dass mir so etwas passierte und ich konnte mit niemandem darüber sprechen.
20. Manchmal hatte ich in unserer Beziehung das Gefühl, Martin wirklich zu kennen, doch später wurde mir klar, dass ich ihn gar nicht kannte, denn er war unglaublich hinterhältig. Für alles, was er tat, hatte er eine Ausrede, doch im Laufe der Zeit wechselten die Argumente und die Geschichten änderten sich –
21. Ich glaube, das lag daran, dass er nicht wusste, was Wahrheit ist.
22. Gefühle gab es da eigentlich gar nicht.
23. Ich glaubte, mit niemandem darüber reden zu können. Ich hatte keine Worte dafür, was da passierte.
24. Ich hatte das Gefühl, ich könnte es nie so erklären, dass andere es verstehen, warum sollte ich es also überhaupt versuchen.
25. Gleichzeitig hatte ich auch das Gefühl, dass ich nicht um Hilfe bitten konnte.
26. Obwohl ich wusste, dass etwas nicht stimmte, wollte ich es nicht zugeben.
27. Ich verlor den Kontakt zu all meinen Freunden und werde ihnen nie wieder nahe stehen.
28. Auf Arbeit hatte ich das Gefühl, alles im Griff zu haben, doch auf Fotos aus dieser Zeit sehe ich, dass ich ziemlich dünn war. Ich schlief nicht richtig. Auf Arbeit war ich hyperaktiv und wenn ich dann nach Hause fuhr, setzte die Angst ein.
29. Als es zum letzten Mal geschah, würgte er mich, bis ich ohnmächtig wurde.
30. Er stand über mir, als ich wieder zu mir kam, und sagte: „Ich muss gehen, ich habe es wieder getan“, oder irgendetwas in der Art.
31. Geistig und körperlich war ich so erschöpft, dass ich dachte, ich kann nicht aufstehen, ich will nicht aufstehen.
32. In der Woche nach diesem Vorfall ging ich jeden Abend zu Bett und dachte: „Ich wäre lieber nicht hier, ich wäre lieber tot“.
33. Ich hätte einfach weggehen sollen und ich war frustriert, weil ich es nicht schaffte, etwas zu ändern Ich spürte, dass ich gehen musste – ich dachte: „Ich kann hier nicht bleiben“.
34. Ich hatte völlig das Gefühl für mich selbst verloren und definierte mich nur über die Beziehung zu Martin. Ich dachte, diese gewalttätige Beziehung gehörte einfach zu meinem Leben.
35. Doch als ich begann, über das Weggehen nachzudenken, wurde mir klar, dass es dabei gar nicht um mich ging.
36. Martin interessierte es überhaupt nicht, wer ich war.
37. Ich hatte die wahnsinnige Erkenntnis, dass ich fast jeden Aspekt meines Selbst losgelassen hatte.
38. Ich musste das dann alles mühsam zurückholen.
39. Mir wurde klar, dass ich alle verloren hatte, die mir einmal nahestanden.
40. Sie verstanden nicht, was mit mir geschah, und ich hatte deshalb das Gefühl, ich könnte nie wieder auf die gleiche Weise mit ihnen verbunden sein.
41. Ich bin jetzt 34 und fühle mich total abgeschnitten von anderen Leuten in meinem Alter und von Jüngeren, denn es gibt bestimmt nicht viele Menschen, die den Verlust ihres Selbst so intensiv erlebt haben.
42. Ich habe eine andere Perspektive auf den Tod, weil ich an einem Punkt angelangt war, an dem ich wegen der Qualen, die ich erleiden musste, eigentlich gar nicht mehr am Leben sein wollte.
43. Doch gerade wegen all dem möchte ich auch leben und das Leben schätzen, wie ich es vorher nicht getan habe. Und ich versuche, das nie zu vergessen.

Los primeros días Ofelia sintió la soledad como un cuchillo y se tuvo tanta pena que andaba por la casa a ratos ruborizada y a ratos pálida. [...]
Un día cambió los cuadros de pared, otro regaló sillas del comedor que de tanto ser modernas pasaron de moda. [...]. Al último arremetió contra su sala, segura de que urgía cambiar la tela de los sillones.
El tapicero llegó al mismo tiempo en que le entregaron por escrito la petición formal de divorcio. La puso a un lado para pensar en cosas más tangibles que el desamor en ocho letras. Trajinó en un muestrario buscando un color nuevo y cuando se decidió por el verde pálido el tapicero llamó a dos ayudantes que levantaron los muebles rumbo al taller.
[...] Ofelia los vio irse y siguió con la mirada el rastro de cositas que iban saliendo de entre los cojines: un botón, dos alfileres, una pluma que ya no pintaba, unas llaves de quién sabe dónde, un boleto de Bellas Artes que nunca encontraron a tiempo para llegar a la función, el rabo de unos anteojos, dos almendras que fueron botana y un papelito color de rosa, doblado en cuatro, que Ofelia recogió con el mismo sosiego con que había ido recogiendo los demás triques.

Zum gleichen Zeitpunkt wie der Polsterer trafen auch die offiziellen Scheidungspapiere bei ihr ein. Ofelia legte sie beiseite, um über greifbarere Dinge nachzudenken als den Verlust der Liebe in neun Buchstaben. Auf der Suche nach einer anderen Farbe durchblätterte sie einen Katalog. Nachdem sie sich für Hellgrün entschieden hatte, rief der Polsterer zwei Assistenten herbei, damit sie die Möbel zur Werkstatt schafften.
[...] Ofelia sah ihnen nach und folgte mit dem Blick der Spur der vielen kleinen Dinge, die aus den Zwischenräumen der Sofapolster herausfielen – ein Knopf, zwei Stecknadeln, ein Federhalter, der schon lange nicht mehr schrieb, ein Schlüsselbund, dessen Herkunft sie sich nicht erklären konnte, die Eintrittskarte für die Kunstakademie, die sie nicht hatten finden können und weshalb sie zu spät zur Vorstellung gekommen waren, das Endstück eines Brillengestells, zwei Mandeln, die mal zu einer Vorspeise gehört hatten, und ein kleines, quadratisch gefaltetes, rosarotes Stück Papier. „Mußt?“, entfuhr es Ofelia mit lauter Stimme. Ihr Mann hatte sie für eine Frau verlassen, die „mußt“ anstelle von „musst“ schrieb? Eine, die die zweite Person Singular eines Verbes auf „d“ und nicht auf „t“ enden lässt? Eine, die nicht weiß, dass „hältst“ nichts mit einem Hals sondern mit Halten zu tun hat?
Die Orthografie ist eine subtile Art der Eleganz der Seele. Wer sie nicht hat, dem kann es egal sein, wo er lebt.
Auf dem Formular, das sie unterzeichnen sollte, wurde als Grund für die Scheidung die Unvereinbarkeit des Charakters der Eheleute angegeben. „Wie wahr“, dachte sie, „Orthografie ist Charakter“. Und unterschrieb.

I have been translating in a professional capacity for more than 15 years.
I hold a MA Bilingual Translation (Distinction) from the University of Westminster (London), where I later also had the opportunity to teach translation (Institutional Translation English-German) as a Visiting Lecturer and to supervise students' MA Projects over the course of two academic years. I am also a registered tutor for the Distance Learning MA in translation with the University of Birmingham.
Over the past few years and after relevant training I have become increasingly involved in audiovisual translations (subtitling of documentaries, feature films, series, children's content), and for the publishing sector I offer translations directly done in Adobe InDesign.
I am a member of the German Association of Literary Translators (VdÜ), the German Association of Film Translators (AVÜ) and the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) in the UK.
