Source text - Spanish Todo el mundo hablaba de la llegada de Cristiano Ronaldo al Real Madrid. De cuánto iba a cobrar, los años de contrato, la desorbitada cifra que el club blanco iba a desembolsar al Manchester por el traspaso.
Mientras, un hombre se desgañitaba e intentaba hacerse oír en la algarabía de declaraciones de futbolistas, directivos, periodistas y aficionados.
Ese hombre era el manager general del Manchester, Alex Ferguson, que parecía clamar sólo en el desierto pero que ha conseguido su objetivo: que Ronaldo permanezca un año más en Inglaterra.
Ronaldo aseguró el jueves en una entrevista a un diario luso que seguirá un año más en el club inglés, donde luchará y se entregará en «cuerpo y alma».
Confirmó que su deseo fue que el Manchester aceptara la oferta por su traspaso. «Decir lo contrario es engañar a la gente y a mi propia conciencia», y asumió toda la responsabilidad por las deterioradas relaciones existentes entre ambos equipos.
Para el técnico de los 'diablos rojos', el 'caso Ronaldo' se había convertido en algo personal. Es imposible entender de otra forma las salidas de tono de muchas de sus declaraciones.
Acusó al conjunto 'merengue' de falta de ética por intentar fichar a un jugador con contrato en vigor hasta el 2012. Llamó «idiota» a un periodista español por algo tan ofensivo como preguntar por la posible llegada del astro portugués al Madrid. Y logró convencer a los dueños del club para que denunciaran al conjunto de Chamartín a la FIFA por su comportamiento «totalmente inaceptable».
Primero y único
El presidente del Real Madrid, Ramón Calderón lo avisó en la presentación de Van der Vaart. «Éste es el primero y seguramente único fichaje», afirmó. Muchos lo interpretaron como un ardid, un movimiento más en la partida de ajedrez, pero ahora se revela como una aseveración muy veraz.
El flirteo de Ronaldo con el Madrid comenzó hace más de tres meses. Tras alzarse con el máximo trofeo continental, el extremo empezó a deshojar la margarita: «Me gustaría jugar en España», «veo muy posible acabar jugando en el Madrid».
El conjunto blanco alcanzó un acuerdo con el jugador. Seis años de contrato a razón de 9,5 millones por cada uno de ellos. Sólo quedaba el acuerdo con el Manchester.
El portugués como forma de presión, se operó del tobillo donde él quiso y no donde le exigió el club, se negó a viajar a Inglaterra y tuvo que ser Ferguson quien se desplazó a Portugal para reunirse con el jugador. Pero todo fue inútil.
La única opción que le queda al madridismo es agarrarse al hipotético acuerdo alcanzado entre Ronaldo y el equipo de Old Trafford para que el portugués sea jugador blanco la próxima temporada.

That man was the manager of Manchester United, Alex Ferguson, who appeared to be a lone voice crying out in the wilderness, but who has achieved his objective: Ronaldo will stay in England for one more year.
In an interview with a portuguese newspaper on Thursday, Ronaldo guaranteed that he would stay for one more year at the english club where he would battle and commit himself "body and soul".
He confirmed that his wish had been that Manchester United accept the transfer offer. "To say otherwise would be to deceive people and betray my own conscience," and he took full responsibility for the deteriorating relations between the two clubs.
For the coach of the “Red Devils”, the “Ronaldo affair” had become personal. It’s impossible otherwise to understand the inappropriateness of many of his statements.
He accused Madrid of a lack of ethics for trying to sign a player under contract until 2012. He called a spanish journalist an “idiot” for asking such an offensive question as when the portuguese star might be going to Madrid. And he managed to convince the owners of the club to report Real to FIFA for its “totally unacceptable” behaviour.
The first and the last
The President of Real Madrid, Ramón Calderón, broke the news during the unveiling of Van der Vaart. “This is our first and last signing”, he declared. Many people saw it as a ruse, another move in the chess game, but now it’s turned out to be the truth.
Ronaldo’s flirtation with Madrid began more than three months ago. After winning Europe's biggest trophy, the winger started his game of "will he, won't he". “I would like to play in Spain", "I can see myself very possibly ending up playing for Madrid".
Madrid reached an agreement with the player. A six year contract worth 9.5 million euros per year. All that was left was the agreement with Manchester United.
To put some sort of pressure on, the Portuguese had an operation on his knee where he chose to, not where the club demanded; he refused to go to England and it was Ferguson who had to travel to Portugal to meet up with the player. But it was all a waste of time.
The only remaining option for the followers of Madrid is to hold on to the hypothetical agreement between Ronaldo and the Old Trafford club that the Portuguese will be playing in a white shirt next season.
