Source text - Spanish Cádiz es la ciudad más antigua de Occidente y una de las ocho provincias andaluzas. La capital, la más blanca y luminosa del sur de España, se extiende sobre una isla unida a la península por una estrecha y alargada lengua de tierra. Sus orillas están bañadas por las aguas de la Bahía, que durante siglos fue la principal área portuaria del país y del océano Atlántico.
Cádiz es una ciudad con más de tres mil años de historia, aunque la capital por la que hoy paseamos fue levantada en el siglo XVIII, en tiempos del barroco y del neoclásico. Pocas ciudades de este país pueden presumir de un carácter tan abierto, tan acogedor y cosmopolita. Los gaditanos conocen cariñosamente su ciudad como la “tacita de plata” y cuentan que fue aquí donde nació la gracia y la alegría andaluza.
Cádiz es la capital de una de las provincias más bellas de España. Las aguas de la Bahía abrazan una de las caras de la ciudad y bañan algunos de los pueblos más importantes del sur provincial. Próximo a Cádiz está Jerez de la Frontera, la segunda gran ciudad de la provincia. Hasta seis parques naturales dan cuenta del alto valor de sus paisajes, su ecología y sus entornos marinos.
Tarifa, la ciudad más meridional de la Península Ibérica, es el puente de unión entre Europa y África y la línea divisoria entre el mar Mediterráneo y el océano Atlántico. Además, Cádiz posee 260 kilómetros de playas que forman la Costa de la Luz y parte de la Costa del Sol, bañando las comarcas de La Janda, el Bajo Guadalquivir, el Campo de Gibraltar y la Bahía.
Tierra adentro, la comarca de la Sierra y Pueblos Blancos acoge las montañas de mayor altura y el área natural de Grazalema, donde se registra el mayor índice de lluvias de toda España.
Cádiz y su provincia gozan de un clima templado, con más de tres mil cien horas de sol al año y una temperatura media de 18 grados, con suaves oscilaciones entre el invierno y el verano. La primavera y el otoño son estaciones templadas, con una excelente temperatura que invita al baño en las playas de la capital y la provincia. Este clima meridional, único en la Península, incita a disfrutar de la calle y la naturaleza en los pueblos del interior. La temporada de lluvias se concentra desde finales de invierno y principios de primavera.
Cádiz fue fundada hace más de tres mil años por fenicios y tartesos. Gadir fue el nombre que la capital recibió en el año 1100 antes de Cristo. El pueblo fenicio haría de ella la colonia comercial más importante al otro extremo del Mediterráneo. Los fenicios establecieron relación con los pueblos de la península y del norte de África, al igual que siglos después lo harían cartagineses y romanos.
Las fábricas de salazón y la pesca almadraba, arte para la captura de atunes, ocupó buena parte de la actividad industrial en tiempos de la fundación. La Gadir romana fue una ciudad pujante que contó con teatro y foro, al igual que la vecina Baelo Claudia, situada en las proximidades a Tarifa.
En el año 711 las tropas de Tarik desembarcaron en la bahía de Algeciras tras derrotar a Don Rodrigo en la Batalla de Guadalete. Fue el inicio de la expansión musulmana en la península. En Cádiz los árabes establecieron un puerto marítimo y reforzaron las murallas que en su día levantaron los romanos. Cádiz dejaría de pertenecer a Alandalus a mediados del siglo XIII, cuando Alfonso X conquistó estas tierras para la Corona de Castilla. Para entonces la vieja Gadir se había convertido en un importante enclave estratégico que se hizo más importante tras el Descubrimiento de América en 1492. Cristóbal Colón escogió su puerto para el segundo viaje al Nuevo Mundo. El tercero de los viajes lo inició el almirante genovés en Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a orillas de la desembocadura del río Guadalquivir, en el mismo lugar donde años después Juan Sebastián Elcano iniciaría su viaje alrededor del mundo.
A mediados de 1596 Cádiz sufrió el asalto de una flota angloholandesa comandada por el conde Essex, favorito de Isabel I de Inglaterra, que trató de hacerse con las riquezas que los galeones españoles habían traído del Nuevo Mundo. La ciudad fue asaltada y arrasada, lo que obligó a la Corona española a levantar nuevas murallas, fuertes y baluartes. Cuentan que una vez terminadas las obras de defensa no había en el mundo una ciudad más inexpugnable.
Durante los siglos XVII y XVIII Cádiz fue una de las ciudades más importantes del planeta. Durante esos dos siglos fue la receptora de las riquezas traídas desde el otro lado del Atlántico. El 12 de mayo de 1717 Felipe V promulgó una real cédula por la que la Casa de la Contratación y el Consulado de Indias fueron trasladadas desde Sevilla hasta Cádiz.
Aquel hecho reforzó aún más su ventajosa posición en la carrera de Indias, y la ciudad se convirtió en una de las principales colonias de extranjeros en puertos europeos. Aquí llegaron genoveses, franceses y holandeses que establecieron sus negocios en los barrios burgueses de San Antonio y San Carlos, a espaldas del Campo del Sur, donde los vientos de levante soplan con mayor fuerza.
El siglo XVIII dejó en Cádiz el urbanismo que hoy conocemos y la arquitectura burguesa que en la actualidad admiramos. Fue costumbre entre los mercaderes de entonces erigir en sus casonas señoriales torreones vigías desde donde otear la salida y llegada de sus navíos.
En 1810, durante la guerra de la Independencia, España fue ocupada por las tropas de Napoleón. Su avance fue frenado en San Fernando y en Cádiz, únicos lugares de la península que los galos no pudieron ocupar. Durante esos días Cádiz se convirtió en capital de España y sede de la Junta Suprema Central, que convocó la reunión de las Cortes. El 19 de marzo de 1812 fue proclamada la primera Constitución española, conocida cariñosamente como la “Pepa”, por ser aprobada el día de San José.
La pérdida en 1898 de las últimas colonias españolas en América sumió a Cádiz en una profunda depresión económica. No obstante, su puerto comercial siguió activo y nuevas compañías navieras establecieron sus sedes en la capital apostando además por la creación de astilleros cuya actividad se desarrollará fundamentalmente a lo largo del siglo XX.
La guerra civil de 1936 y la posguerra volvieron a aletargar la marcha económica y social de la capital. La llegada de la democracia trajo consigo el florecimiento económico de Cádiz y de la Bahía, la creación de su universidad en 1979 y la apertura de nuevas instituciones sociales y culturales que la convierten hoy en día en una de las ciudades más activas de Andalucía.

The capital, the whitest and brightest in the south of Spain, stretches over an area of land united to the peninsula by a narrow and extended tongue of land. Its shores are bathed by the bay’s waters. For centuries it was the principal port area to the country and the Atlantic Ocean.
Cádiz is a city with more than three thousand years of history, although the capital that we know today was built in the 18th century, in baroque and neoclassical times. Few cities in the country can boast a character which is so open, friendly and cosmopolitan. The people of Cádiz fondly know their city as the “tacita de plata” (“Little silver cup”) and say that it was here where the Andalusian charm and joy were born.
Cádiz is the capital of one of Spain’s most beautiful provinces. The bay’s waters embrace one of the sides of the city and bathe some of the most important towns in the south of the province. Next to Cádiz is Jerez de la Frontera, the province’s second biggest city. Six natural parks represent the high value of its landscapes, ecology and marine environments.
Tarifa, the most southern city on the Iberian Peninsula, is the bridge which unites Europe and Africa, and the dividing line for the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Cádiz also has 260 kilometres of beaches which form the Costa de la Luz and part of the Costa del Sol, where the sea washes over the shores of La Janda, el Bajo Guadalquivir, Campo de Gibraltar and La Bahía (the Bay of Cádiz).
Inland, the region of the Sierra and the White Villages boasts the highest mountains and the natural area of Grazalema, where the highest rainfall is registered in the whole of Spain.
Cádiz and its province have a warm climate, with more than three thousand one hundred hours of sun a year and an average temperature of 18 degrees, with slight fluctuations between the winter and summer. The spring and autumn are warm seasons, with an excellent temperature, perfect for a swim in the sea at the beaches in the capital or the province. This southern climate, unique in the Peninsula, allows you to enjoy the streets and nature in the inland villages. The rainy season is concentrated from around the end of winter to the beginning of spring.
Cádiz was founded over more than three thousand years ago by Phoenicians and Tartessus. Gadir was the name the capital received in the year 1100 before Christ. The Phoenician people would later turn it into the most important business colony on the other side of the Mediterranean. The Phoenicians established relations with the people of the Peninsula and the people North Africa, just like the Carthaginians and Romans would do centuries after.
The salted fish factories and Almadraba tuna (tuna caught using an old technique with nets) occupied a good part of the industrial activity in the times of the foundation. Roman Gadir was a booming city, which had a theatre and a forum like the neighbouring town Baelo Claudia, located in the vicinity of Tarifa.
In the year 711 Tarik’s troops disembarked in the Bay of Algeciras after defeating Don Rodrigo in the Battle of Guadalete. It was the start of the Muslim expansion in the peninsula. In Cádiz the Arabs established a sea port and reinforced the walls which were put up by the Romans in their day. Cádiz would no longer belong to Alandalus halfway though the 13th century, when Alfonso X conquered the land for the Crown of Castile.
By that time the old Gadir had become an important strategic enclave, which became more important after the discovery of America in 1492. Christopher Columbus chose its port for the second journey to the New World. A third of the expeditions the Genoese admiral started in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, on the shores of the mouth of the Guadalquivir river, in the same place where years after Juan Sebastián Elcano would start his journey around the world.
Halfway though 1596, Cádiz was attacked by an Anglo-Dutch fleet commanded by the Earl of Essex, a favourite of Elizabeth I of England, which tried to take riches that the Spanish galleons had brought from the New World. The city was attacked and devastated, obliging the Spanish Crown to build new walls, forts and bastions. It was said that once the defences were finished, it was the most impregnable city in the world.
During the 17th and 18th centuries Cádiz was one of the most important cities on the planet. During these two centuries it was the recipient of the riches brought from the other side of the Atlantic. On the 12th May 1717 Felipe V enacted a royal order for the House of Trade and the Merchant Guild of the Indies to be moved from Seville to Cádiz. This reinforced its advantageous position even more in the route to the Indies, and the city became one of the principal colonies of foreigners in European ports. The Genoese, French and Dutch arrived here, establishing their businesses in the middle-class districts of San Antonio and San Carlos, behind the Campo del Sur, where the easterly winds blow strongly.
The 18th century left Cádiz with the town planning that we know today and the bourgeois architecture that we currently admire. It was usual among the merchants of the time to erect watchtowers at their large stately homes from which they could keep watch on the departures and arrivals of their ships.
In 1810, during the War of Independence, Spain was occupied by Napoleon’s troops. Their advance was stopped in San Fernando and in Cádiz, the only places on the peninsula which they couldn’t occupy. During these days Cádiz became the capital of Spain and headquarters to the Supreme Central Junta, which convened the Cortes. On the 19th March 1812 it was proclaimed the first Spanish Constitution, fondly known as the “Pepa” (Pepe in Spanish is the standard nickname for José, comparable to Joe for Joseph), because it was adopted on Saint Joseph’s day.
The loss of the last Spanish colonies in America in 1898 plunged Cádiz into deep economic depression. Nevertheless, its commercial port remained active and new shipping companies established their headquarters in the capital, creating shipyards whose activity would essentially be developed throughout the 20th century.
The 1936 Civil War and the post-war period once again disrupted the capital’s economic and social development. The arrival of democracy brought economic blossoming to Cádiz and the Bay of Cádiz, the creation of the university in 1979 and the opening of new social and cultural institutions which make it one of the most active cities in Andalusia today.
