Translation - English Environmentalists protest at Total’s facility in Pau
Opponents of the offshore oil summit scheduled for April in Pau are continuing their protests. After the fake oil slick in the lake at the Palais Beaumont, they are protesting this morning in front of the Centre Jean Feger, Total’s research facility in Pau.
“It’s a mass crime against humanity”. “We are blockading the offshore oil summit!”: NGO ‘Non-violent action Cop 21’ continues to act in opposition to the MCE Deepwater Development conference scheduled for April 5 -7 in Pau.
The organisation’s non-violent demonstrations come one after another - they have already caused a fake oil slick in front of the Palais Beaumont, and this Friday morning they are stopping employees and journalists invited to visit the Centre Jean Feger.
Lying at the entrance to the building, with a placard reading “From April 5 to 7, we will stop those who are digging the graves of the climate and the oceans” one protester has dressed as a mermaid covered in oil.
In the eyes of its opponents, “it is unacceptable that this summit is being held in the same country where COP 21 took place”.
French to English: La comète de Pâques / The Easter Comet General field: Science Detailed field: Astronomy & Space
Translation - English Don’t miss the Easter comet!
In just a few days the brightness of comet 252P LINEAR has increased by a factor of 200, and something which should have passed through the sky undetected is now visible at dawn with the naked eye.
Sometimes the sky has nice surprises for us. Comet 252P LINEAR, which was discovered in April 2000 and completes one elliptical orbit of the Sun every 5.3 years, was once again near our star on March 15. Based on its behavior during previous orbits astronomers had said it would not be very bright, with a magnitude of around 10.4 on the scale used to measure the brightness of celestial bodies. Remember - the smaller the magnitude (even into negative figures) the brighter the body , and that in a very dark sky far from artificial light sources an observer can expect to see celestial bodies of up to magnitude 6 with the naked eye. So a comet with a reported magnitude of 10.4, or nearly 60 times dimmer than the dimmest object visible with the naked eye, didn’t stand much chance of holding observers’ attention.
On March 21, 252P LINEAR passed Earth at a distance of 5.3 million kilometers, one day before another small comet – P/2016 BA14 PanSTARRS – went by us at 3.5 million kilometers. Specialists believe that these 2 celestial bodies may be fragments of a comet nucleus which broke up as it made its closest approach to the Sun over a century ago.
That’s why the message renowned Australian amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo sent to a group of comet observers on March 19 surprised everybody. He had just observed 252 P LINEAR with the naked eye! Other observers quickly confirmed an exceptional increase in brightness: 252P LINEAR’s magnitude had suddenly changed from 10.4 to 4.6, meaning it had become 200 times brighter. This sudden change remains unexplained, but a new portion of the surface rich in water ice and dust must have been exposed at perihelion (closest approach to the sun). A further break-up of the nucleus has been suggested, but at present no observations confirming this hypothesis have been made. By March 19 252P LINEAR had not yet arrived in the skies above the northern hemisphere - it was residing near the southern celestial pole – presently however, it’s blazing a trail that brings it within range of the naked eye, as it climbs a little bit further above the southern horizon each morning in the constellations of Scorpius and Ophiuchus. Given favourable weather conditions, try to spot it over the Easter weekend.
