Source text - English - Ryan, what led you to want to make your first film as a director when your acting career is still taking off?
- I love directing and being able to be able to spend so much time with one project as opposed to working as an actor where you're only involved for a few months. My responsibility was to shape the story but after that I wanted the actors to bring their own contribution and inspiration to the film. In the end, your film has gone far beyond the extent of your imagination and expectation of what it would be.
- Your film had a rough ride at Cannes. Was that disappointing to you?
- I thought the criticism was harsh and didn't take into account the incredible performances of the actors. I'm proud of the work we did and I hope people find something interesting in it. Cannes was a strange experience. I had never shown the film to anyone outside of a few people in my basement and suddenly I'm wearing a tuxedo and watching it in a massive theatre with a thousand people. I can't control how people react to the film but I believe in it.
- It's very different from the adulation you often receive as an actor...
- I'm fine with that. As a director, you have to take responsibility for your work and I'm happy to do that. As an actor you can always avoid taking the blame for a bad film goes by saying you didn't direct it, you didn't write the script. I can't do that here and I stand by the work. Your film speaks for you whether you like it or not.
- What was it like working with your girlfriend, Eva Mendes?
- She helped me a lot. I picked the actors because I had worked with them before. They all brought a lot to the film and they directed me in a way because they added things that I never would have thought of. It was an interesting dynamic and while we were shooting I felt like I was always having to catch up to my own film. I had that feeling from the very first moment I started thinking about it and writing it. The story took on a momentum of its own and that process continued while we were shooting.
- How did you feel about becoming a father for the first time?
- It's an exciting time. It's really nice (to be a father)...I've thought a long time about starting a family...I'm a romantic and I'm lucky to have the right woman at my side.
- You and Eva previously worked on The Place Beyond the Pines where you were spending time in a situation where you were helping provide for her and her son in the film. Did that experience resonate with you?
- I had a great time. And then that child had really incredible positive energy, was able to put me in a good mood right away...I enjoy being with children and being a father is something I'm thrilled about.
- What's the worst part of being an actor with the kind of media frenzy that surrounds you?
- The worst thing is that when you're famous you turn into a kind of politician in the sense that you have to be very careful what you say. If you say one odd little thing that comment can be taken out of context and suddenly there's all these headlines over something you might have said in an offhand way or you were being sarcastic.
- Are you still in some way surprised by how you became a movie star?
- Oh, yeah. Before I did The Notebook, it was hard for me to even get an audition. I would show up and there would be all these incredibly good- looking guys reading for the same part and most of the time you knew that you had no chance.
I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I would always be a character actor and going from one supporting role to another, if I was lucky. But when Nick Cassavetes hired me (for The Notebook), that changed everything and suddenly I was able to do the kind of movies you always dream of having the chance of working on. I've been very lucky to be in the position I'm in and I'm still having a lot of fun in this business.
Translation - French - Ryan, qu'est-ce qui vous a donné envie de réaliser votre premier film alors que votre carrière d'acteur est toujours en plein essor ?
- J'adore la réalisation et pouvoir passer autant de temps sur un seul projet alors qu'en tant qu'acteur notre rôle ne dure que quelques mois. Mon travail en tant que réalisateur a été de donner forme à l'histoire mais par la suite j'ai souhaité que les acteurs puissent contribuer au film, y apporter leurs propres idées. Le résultat final est un film qui est allé bien au-delà de ce que j’aurais imaginé.
- Votre film a déchaîné les critiques à Cannes. Avez-vous été déçu ?
- J'ai trouvé que le film avait été sévèrement jugé et qu'on n'avait pas du tout tenu compte de la performance des acteurs. Je suis fier du travail réalisé et j'espère que cela parlera aux spectateurs. Cannes a été une expérience curieuse. Je n'avais encore jamais montré mon film à qui que ce soit à l'exception de quelques personnes dans mon sous-sol, et tout à coup je me retrouve en smoking dans une salle gigantesque à le regarder avec un millier de personnes. Je ne peux pas contrôler comment les gens vont réagir mais je crois en ce film.
- C'est complètement différent de l'adulation qui entoure votre jeu d'acteur...
- Ça ne me dérange pas. En tant que réalisateur, c'est à moi d'endosser la responsabilité du film et je suis heureux de le faire. En tant qu'acteur, on peut toujours se justifier si le film est nul en disant qu'on ne l'a pas réalisé, qu'on n'a pas écrit le scénario. Je ne peux pas le faire ici et je reste fidèle au travail qui a été réalisé. Votre film parle pour vous, que vous le vouliez ou non.
- Comment s'est passée la collaboration avec votre compagne, Eva Mendes ?
- Elle m'a beaucoup aidé. J'ai choisi des acteurs avec qui j'avais déjà travaillé auparavant. Ils ont tous énormément contribué au film et ils m'ont, en quelque sorte, dirigé eux aussi en proposant des idées auxquelles je n'aurais jamais pensé. C'était une dynamique intéressante et pendant qu'on tournait j'avais l'impression que je devais perpétuellement rattraper mon retard sur mon propre film. J'ai eu cette sensation dès le moment où j'ai commencé à y penser et que je suis passé à l'écriture. L'histoire a pris son élan d'elle-même et ce processus a continué pendant le tournage.
- Qu'avez-vous ressenti lorsque vous êtes devenu père pour la première fois ?
- Ça a été une expérience formidable. C'est vraiment agréable (d'être père)... J'ai longtemps réfléchi à fonder une famille... Je suis quelqu'un de romantique et j'ai beaucoup de chance d'avoir trouvé la bonne personne.
- Vous avez auparavant tourné avec Eva dans The Place Beyond the Pines, film dans lequel vous deviez subvenir aux besoins du personnage qu’elle interprétait et de son fils. Est-ce que cette expérience a fait écho en vous ?
- Je me suis bien amusé sur le tournage. Et puis, cet enfant dégageait une telle énergie positive qu'il était capable de me mettre immédiatement de bonne humeur... J'aime être entouré d'enfants et je suis très heureux d'être père.
- Qu'est-ce qu’il y a de pire selon vous dans le battage médiatique qui accompagne un acteur célèbre ?
- Le pire quand on est célèbre est qu'on devient d’une certaine façon un homme politique, dans le sens où on doit être très attentif à tout ce que l'on dit. Le moindre commentaire un peu singulier que vous prononcez peut être sorti de son contexte. Et tout à coup, vous faites les gros titres dans la presse alors que vous aviez peut-être parlé à la légère ou au second degré.
- Est-ce que vous êtes toujours surpris de la manière dont vous êtes devenu célèbre ?
- Bien sûr. Avant de tourner dans N'oublie jamais, j'avais du mal à décrocher ne serait-ce qu'une audition. Je me présentais et il y avait tous ces mecs magnifiques qui auditionnaient pour le même rôle que moi, et la plupart du temps je savais que je n'avais aucune chance.
Je m'étais presque résigné à l'idée que je serais toujours un acteur de genre et que, si j'avais de la chance, je pourrais enchaîner les rôles secondaires. Mais quand Nick Cassavetes m'a choisi (pour N'oublie jamais), tout a changé. Tout à coup, j'ai pu prétendre au genre de films dont tout le monde rêve. J'ai beaucoup de chance d'être là où je suis aujourd'hui et j'ai toujours autant de plaisir à faire ce métier.
