Source text - English HUMAN RIGHTS REPORTING ON THE EBOLA FRONTLINES
Kolubah Akoi didn’t start out to be a hero. But when the Ebola
crisis hit Lofa County in Northern Liberia in July, instead of fleeing, the JHR-trained journalist decided to stay and report on the impact of the devastating disease.
In the middle of an epidemic, Kolubah credits his JHR training for giving him both the skills and the courage to stay and report.
“I said to myself, I was trained as a human rights journalist, trained to serve humanity,” he explains. “If I leave, who will inform the world? The government shut the road and quarantined the entire county. Who will tell the story behind the barricade?”
In July, Kolubah saw a man on the street bleeding from his ears, vomiting, and calling for help. Kolubah posted
a photo of the man on Facebook and
asked for someone to come and take him to the hospital. But no one came. The local Ebola Treatment Unit was way past capacity.
“From that moment everything changed in my life,” Kolubah explains. Family and friends begged him to leave. He considered it, but decided to stay and cover the epidemic. “No news is worth dying for,” he acknowledges. “But I felt guilty in my heart for those that
were dying before my very eyes and I needed to let the world know.”
He systematically reported on the number of people getting infected each day, posted
photos of victims and told stories of survivors and the victims on his Facebook page.
Kolubah’s photos and stories were picked up by international media.
What he saw shocked him – a “collapsed health care system, frightened nurses, doctors, and ordinary citizens.” But throughout his reporting he remained steadfast to his mission – telling the world about events in Liberia.
At first, he reported without ideal protective equipment – no hazardous material suit or triple layered surgical gloves or face masks. Instead he used a rain coat, rubber boots and socks on his hands. Kolubah now has
a protective suit, but covering the disease remains very risky.
Kolubah received his JHR training while he was at the University of Liberia where he was a founding member of the JHR Liberia student chapter and its first president.
“Kolubah was one of the only people who stayed in Lofa to update the world on what was happening there – whether it was information that the government wanted out or not,” adds
JHR trainer and BBC Ivory Coast correspondent Tamasin Ford. “He’s incredibly courageous.”
For his efforts and his remarkable use of social media to tell the world about the virus, Kolubah has been named a Humanitarian Hero by both the United Nations and the African Union.
JHR’s work in Liberia was supported by the UK Department for International Development and donors like you from 2006-2013. Reporters like Kolubah continue to use the skills they learned from JHR to investigate human rights issues in their communities.

En plein cœur d’une épidémie, Kolubah f élicite JDH de lui avoir donné les habiletés et le courage nécessaires pour rester et faire des reportages.
“Je me suis dit que j’avais reçu la formation de journalistes en droits humains afin de servir l’humanité” explique-t-il. “Si je quitte, qui informera le monde? Le gouvernement avait fermé les routes et mis le pays entier en quarantaine. Qui racontera l’histoire de l’autre côté des barricades?”
En juillet, Kolubah a vu dans la rue, un homme dont du sang s’écoulait de ses oreilles, en train de vomir et d’appeler à l’aide. Kolubah a diffusé une photo de l’homme sur Facebook en demandant si quelqu’un pouvait venir le chercher pour l’amener à l’hôpital. Personne n’est venu. L’unité locale de traitement de l’Ebola avait largement dépassé sa capacité.
“À partir de ce moment, tout a changé dans ma vie” dit Kolubah. Sa famille et ses amis le suppliaient de quitter. Il y a songé, mais il a décidé de rester et de faire la couverture de l’épidémie. “Aucune nouvelle ne mérite que l’on meurt pour elle” admet-il. “Mais je me sentais coupable devant ceux qui mouraient devant moi et qui avaient besoin que l’on monde sache”.
Chaque jour, systématiquement, il rapportait le nombre de personnes infectées sur sa page Facebook, diffusait les photos des victimes de la maladie et racontaient l’histoire des survivants et des décédés. Les photos et les histoires de Kolubah ont été reprises par les médias internationaux.
Ce qu’il a vu l’a profondément choqué: “un système de santé effondré, des infirmières et infirmiers, médecins et gens ordinaires apeurés.” Malgré tout, durant tous ses reportages, il est resté déterminé à accomplir sa mission: raconter les événements du Libéria au monde entier.
Au début, il travaillait sans équipement de protection approprié: une combinaison de protection, trois épaisseurs de gants chirurgicaux et un masque chirurgical. À la place, il portait un imperméable, des bottes de caoutchouc et des chaussettes sur ses mains. À présent, Kolubah possède une combinaison de protection, mais faire la couverture de la maladie demeure risqué.
Kolubah a participé à la formation de JDH alors qu’il était étudiant à l’université du Libéria où il est l’un des membres fondateurs et le premier président du chapitre étudiant de JDH Libéria.
“Kolubah était l’une des seules personnes à vouloir rester à Lofa afin de tenir le monde au courant des événements ici. Que ce soit des informations que le gouvernement tenait à faire savoir ou pas” ajoute l’instructeur de JDH et correspondant de la BBC en Côte-d’Ivoire Tamasin Ford. “Il est incroyablement courageux”.
Les Nations unies et l’Union africaine ont nommé Kolubah Héros humanitaire pour ses efforts et son incroyable utilisation des médias sociaux dans le but de parler du virus au monde entier.
