Source text - English A typical home appliance contains several sensors, from the switches and dials you interact with to the temperature sensors and limit switches that keep your coffee pot from overflowing or setting the house on fire when the last cup is gone and the heater’s left on. Sensors are central to a hardware hacker’s vocabulary. The more of them you know about, the more responsive your devices can be.
What follows is an introduction to the characteristics of most sensors, so you know the range of possibilities. Later, I’ll show how to use a few specific sensors.
This article assumes you’ve got a basic understanding of how electricity works. If you don’t, check out Forrest M. Mims’ book, Getting Started in Electronics.
Types of Sensors
Electronic sensors convert other forms of physical energy into measurable electrical properties.
All sensors can be grouped in two major categories: digital sensors, which output one of two possible states, on or off, and analog sensors, whose outputs change continuously with the changing physical energy that they read.
Sensor Interfaces
In order to use sensors, you have to know how they interface with your computer, microcontroller, or circuit. Sensor devices typically combine a sensing component with filter circuits and amplifiers to convert the sensor’s electrical changes into an electrical signal that’s usable by microcontrollers and other electronic devices.
There are a handful of common types of sensor interfaces. Some can be used directly in an output circuit, and others need to be connected to a computer or microcontroller.
The simplest sensor devices output a changing DC voltage. An analog sensor will output a voltage that changes continuously across its output range, and a digital sensor will output either the top of its range or the bottom. For example, the Sharp GP2D120 analog sensor outputs a changing voltage, from 0 to about 3 volts, that corresponds to a person or object’s proximity to the sensor. The Quantum QT113H sensor, a digital sensor, outputs 0 volts when a person is in contact with the sensor, and 5 volts when no one’s in contact with it.
Pulse width output sensor devices will generate a series of digital pulses that change with the energy they’re sensing. For example, a Taos TSL230 sensor converts the intensity of light received into a changing frequency of pulses. You’ll often see the term PWM, or pulse width modulation, to refer to this form of output.
More complex sensor devices output digital data serially, either using an asynchronous serial protocol that’s common to most personal computers, or using a synchronous serial protocol.
Asynchronous serial devices work just like any other device that connects to a computer’s serial port. They have three connections: one for transmitting data, one for receiving data, and one that’s a common ground. Some can be connected directly to a PC’s serial port. Others can be connected through a signal converter like Maxim’s MAX232 chip. Once you know the sensor device’s data protocol, you can read the data right from your PC.

센서의 종류
전자 센서는 다른 형태의 물리 에너지를 측정 가능한 전기적 특성으로 변환한다.
모든 센서는 크게 두 가지 카테고리로 나눌 수 있다: 온/오프 상태 중 하나를 출력하는 디지털 센서, 읽어 들인 물리적 에너지의 변화에 따라 출력이 계속해서 변하는 아날로그 센서, 두 가지이다.
센서 인터페이스
센서를 사용하려면 이들이 컴퓨터, 마이크로컨트롤러, 회로와 어떻게 소통(인터페이스)하는지 알아야 한다. 센서를 사용하는 장치에는 일반적으로 센서 부품이 필터 회로, 증폭기 등과 결합되어 있는데, 센서의 전기적 변화를 마이크로컨트롤러와 다른 전기장치에서 사용할 수 있는 전기 신호로 변환해주기 위해서이다.
일반적인 쓰이는 몇 종류의 센서 인터페이스가 있는데, 종류에 따라 어떤 것은 출력 회로에 바로 사용할 수도 있고, 어떤 것은 컴퓨터나 마이크로컨트롤러에 연결해야 한다.
가장 간단한 센서 장치는 변화하는 직류전압을 출력한다. 아날로그 센서는 출력 범위 내에서 계속해서 변하는 전압을, 디지털 센서는 출력 범위 내에서 가까운 정도에 따라 고저값을 출력할 것이다. 예를 들어, 샤프의 GP2D120 아날로그 센서는 사람이나 물체의 근접 정도에 따라 0-3사이의 전압을 출력한다. 디지털 센서인 퀀텀 QT113H는 사람이 센서에 접촉하고 있을 때는 0볼트를, 닿지 않았을 때는 5볼트를 출력한다.
펄스폭 출력 센서 장치는 센서가 감지한 에너지에 따라 변하는 일련의 디지털 펄스를 발생시킨다. 예를 들어, 타오스(Taos)의 TSL230센서는 들어온 빛의 세기를 펄스의 주파수 변화로 출력한다. 이런 형태의 출력을 PWM, 혹은 펄스폭 변조라고 부른다.
좀 더 복잡한 센서 장치는 대부분의 개인용 컴퓨터에 일반적으로 쓰이는 비동기 시리얼(직렬) 프로토콜이나, 아니면 동기 시리얼 프로토콜을 사용해서 순차적으로 디지털 데이터를 출력한다.
비동기 직렬 장치는 컴퓨터의 시리얼 포트와 연결되는 여느 장치와 같은 방식으로 작동한다. 이 장치에는 연결이 세 개 있는데, 각각 데이터 전송, 데이터 수신, 공통 접지 용도로 쓰인다. PC의 시리얼 포트에 직접 연결할 수 있는 장치도 있고, 맥심(Maxim)의 MAX232 칩 같이 신호변환기를 통해 연결해야 하는 것도 있다. 일단 센서 장치의 데이터 프로토콜을 알고 나면, PC에서 바로 데이터를 읽어낼 수 있다.
