I/E. CAR - DAY
Bright-eyed LORI THARPS (black, 21) sits in the back seat and looks out the window: rows of cookie cutter suburban homes.
LORI (V.O.)
I am writing to formally request
that my thesis work be done at the
Universidad de Salamanca under the
advisement of Professor Juan
Moreno, who is the preeminent
scholar of the Spanish slave trade.
Her FATHER drives. Her MOTHER rides in the passenger side and is trying to ask her something, but Lori isn’t listening.
Lori’s mother reaches over to wipe a smudge off her cheek.
Embarrassed, Lori nudges her away. She looks at her reflection in the window to see the smudge for herself.
EXT. AIRPORT - DAY
Lori’s father looks like he’ll put his back out, struggling with one of TWO GIANT SUITCASES. Lori takes pity on him and takes the bags herself.
LORI (V.O.)
My whole life, I’ve been drawn to
the language, the food, the music,
the everything of Spain.
Lori hugs her parents and cheerfully urges them to get back in the car and go. They reluctantly climb in.
LORI (V.O.)
And though I’ve never been to
Spain, I feel that it is calling me
home, that it has always called me
home. It’s an inner longing, deep
in my stomach, a sense of having
been parted from an important part
of myself.
Lori’s parents wave to her as they drive away. She waves back, but once they are gone, she realizes: this is it. Heroptimism quickly gives way to uncertainty.
INT. AIRPORT GATE - DAY
Lori sits alone, gazing at other PEOPLE waiting to board and clutching a SCRAPBOOK for dear life. She opens the book and looks through it.
It’s teeming with Spanish poems, paintings, essays... years’ worth of research: Velázquez’s portrait of Juan de Pareja, a can of Cola Cao with the image of field slaves carrying bundles, Langston Hughes in Spain.
LORI (V.O.)
I feel that History chose me, just
as Spain chose me, and my destiny
lies at the intersection of the
two.
Lori turns to a page containing a picture of FRANCINE GÁLVEZ - Afro-Spanish reporter and celebrity.
Feeling a little self conscious, Lori closes the scrapbook and hugs it to her chest.
INT. PLANE - DAY
Lori sleeps with her mouth open, her arms around the scrapbook.
LORI (V.O.)
I hope you will allow me to study
in the place that has so
irreversibly captured my
imagination and my heart.
EXT. AIRPORT - DAY
A plane lands in Madrid, Spain.
LORI (V.O.)
Sincerely, Lori Tharps.
EXT. MADRID STREETS - DAY
Lori struggles with her SUITCASES, dodging PEDESTRIANS, PETS, and CARS. She stops at the corner and removes her large MAP, trying to get her bearings.
Lori is lost. The impossible labyrinth of streets and architecture is overwhelming.
Finally, she grabs the attention of a YOUNG WOMAN, who stops to help her.
LORI
(struggling Spanish)
Excuse me. Can you ... I need a
bus to Salamanca?
The Young Woman fires off directions, and Lori can’t keep up.
LORI (CONT’D)
I’m sorry, can you ... Más... slow,
por favor.
EXT. BUS STOP - DAY
The bus to Salamanca is pulling away as Lori runs up the street, frantically waving and exclaiming. The bus stops, and Lori catches up.
I/E. BUS - DAY
Lori leans out the window, snapping photos of beautiful orange trees, rolling hills, cathedrals. It’s absolutely breathtaking.
Lori sits and looks through her CAMERA at her photos. She grins at the KID next to her.
KID
Tourista?
LORI
No ... Well, sí, but I’m ... soy
estudiante.
(beat)
And I belong here.
EXT. SALAMANCA STREETS - DAY
The bus stops, and Lori exits. She looks around at the ancient mauve architecture, the squares, the restaurants, and cobble-stone alleys. She’s in heaven. The BUS DRIVER taps her on the shoulder: he’s gotten her bags from under the bus.
EXT. SALAMANCA STREETS - LATER
Lori lugs her gigantic suitcases to the door of a small boarding house. She stops and checks a slip of PAPER to make sure she’s at the right address. She knocks, and the door swings open.
Staring out at Lori is SRA REYES (40s), a stern-looking woman, smoking a CIGARETTE. She doesn’t say anything, and Lori shifts her weight under her harsh gaze.
LORI
Señora Reyes?
SRA. REYES
Sí. Lori Tharps?
LORI
Yes, I’m Lori. Nice to meet-
SRA. REYES
(Spanish)
Only Spanish in this house. No
English. Ever.
Sra. Reyes turns and heads into the apartment. Confused, Lori waits a moment before dragging her bags inside.
INT. SRA. REYES BOARDING HOUSE - CONTINUOUS
Lori leaves her bags at the front and follows Sra. Reyes as she half-heartedly gives a tour. She takes her into the
KITCHEN AREA
Seated at the table are FOUR UNRULY CHILDREN of various ages, spending more time pulling each others’ hair and arguing than eating. Sra. Reyes seems not to notice their behavior.
SRA. REYES
(Spanish)
These are my children. Lunch
begins promptly at 2 pm. If you’re
late, you don’t eat.
Sra. Reyes looks at Lori meaningfully.
SRA. REYES (CONT’D)
(Spanish)
You’re late.
She continues down the hallway, and Lori follows.
LORI
Yes, well, I had to take the bus-
SRA. REYES
Español!
Lori considers starting over in Spanish, but decides to let it go. Sra. Reyes leads her up some stairs.

1. INT./EXT. COCHE - DÍA
Los ojos brillantes de LORI THARPS (negra, 21 años) miran por la ventanilla desde el asiento trasero del coche: ve hileras de hogares suburbanos, todos cortados por el mismo patrón.
LORI (VOZ en OFF)
“El motivo de la presente es solicitar formalmente la realización de mi tesis en la Universidad de Salamanca con el asesoramiento del profesor Juan Moreno, la más eminente autoridad en el comercio español de esclavos.”
Su PADRE conduce. Su MADRE viaja en el asiento del copiloto y está tratando de preguntarle algo, pero Lori no le escucha.
La madre de Lori se estira sobre el asiento para limpiarle una manchita de la mejilla. Molesta, Lori la aparta con un gesto de la mano. Se mira reflejada en el cristal de la ventanilla para ver la mancha por sí misma.
2. EXT. AEROPUERTO - DÍA
El padre de Lori parece a punto de descoyuntarse la espalda en su lucha con una de las DOS ENORMES MALETAS. Lori se apiada de él y ella se hace cargo de su equipaje.
LORI (VOZ en OFF)
“Toda mi vida me he sentido atraída por el idioma, la comida, la música, por todo lo que venía de España.”
Lori abraza a sus padres y alegremente les anima a volver al coche y marcharse. Ellos montan en el vehículo de mala gana.
LORI (VOZ en OFF)
“... Y aunque nunca he estado en España, siento que me llama, que siempre me ha llamado. Es un anhelo interior, en lo profundo de mis entrañas, una sensación de haber vivido separada de una parte importante de mí misma.”
Los padres de Lori la despiden con la mano al alejarse. Ella también agita la mano, pero cuando por fin se pierden de vista, se da cuenta de que aquello se acabó. Y su optimismo rápidamente da paso a la incertidumbre.
3. INT. AEROPUERTO. PUERTA DE EMBARQUE - DÍA
Lori está sentada sola, mirando a la GENTE que espera para embarcar, y aferrando contra su pecho un ÁLBUM DE RECORTES como si le fuera la vida en ello. Lo abre y lo hojea.
Está lleno de poemas españoles, pinturas, ensayo... todo fruto de años de investigación: el retrato de Juan de Pareja, de Velázquez, una lata de Cola-Cao con una estampa de esclavos acarreando fardos en un campo, Langston Hughes (escritor afroamericano y corresponsal en la guerra civil española) en España...
LORI (VOZ en OFF)
“Siento que la historia me ha elegido, tal como me eligió España, y que mi destino yace en la intersección entre ambas.”
Lori pasa a una página donde hay una foto de FRANCINE GÁLVEZ, conocida periodista y presentadora afro-española.
Sintiéndose de pronto un poco cohibida, Lori cierra el álbum y lo aprieta de nuevo contra su pecho.
4. INT. AVIÓN - DÍA
Lori duerme con la boca abierta, sus brazos siempre alrededor del álbum.
LORI (OFF)
“Espero que me permitan ustedes estudiar en el lugar que tan irreversiblemente ha capturado mi imaginación y mi corazón.”
5. EXT. AEROPUERTO - DÍA
Un avión aterriza en Madrid, España.
LORI (VOZ en OFF)
“Atentamente, Lori Tharps”.
6. EXT. CALLES DE MADRID - DÍA
Lori lucha con sus MALETAS, esquivando TRANSEÚNTES, MASCOTAS y COCHES. Se detiene en una esquina y saca un gran MAPA, tratando de orientarse.
Lori está perdida. El imposible laberinto de calles y arquitectura es apabullante.
Finalmente llama la atención de una JOVEN, que se detiene a ayudarle.
LORI
(peleando con su español)
Disculpe. Podría...
Necesito un autobús a Salamanca.
La joven comienza a darle indicaciones, pero Lori no puede seguirle.
LORI (CONT.)
I’m sorry, can you...
Más... slow, por favor.
7. EXT. PARADA DE AUTOBÚS - DÍA
El autobús de Salamanca está ya arrancando cuando Lori llega corriendo por la calle, haciendo gestos frenéticos y gritando. El autobús se detiene y Lori consigue alcanzarlo.
8. INT./EXT. AUTOBÚS - DÍA
Lori se asoma por la ventanilla, sacando fotos de hermosos naranjos, colinas ondulantes y catedrales. Es absolutamente imponente.
Lori se sienta y mira las fotos en su CÁMARA. Le sonríe al NIÑO sentado junto a ella.
NIÑO
(en español)
¿Eres turista?
LORI
No... Well, sí, but I’m... soy estudiante.
(Pausa) Y pertenezco aquí.
9. EXT. CALLES DE SALAMANCA - DÍA
El autobús llega a su destino y Lori desciende. Mira a su alrededor, a la antigua arquitectura malva, las plazas, los restaurantes y los callejones adoquinados. Se siente en el paraíso. El CONDUCTOR DEL AUTOBÚS le da un toquecito en el hombro: ha sacado sus maletas del maletero del bus.
10. EXT. CALLES DE SALAMANCA. MÁS TARDE – DÍA
Lori arrastra sus gigantescas maletas hasta la puerta de una pequeña pensión. Allí se para y chequea un PAPELITO para asegurarse de que está ante la dirección correcta. Llama y la puerta se abre.
Frente a Lori aparece una mujer en los cuarenta fumando un CIGARRILLO y contemplándola con hosca expresión. Es la SEñORA REYES. No dice nada, y Lori cambia incómoda el peso de un pie al otro ante la adusta mirada de la mujer.
LORI
¿Señora Reyes?
SRA. REYES
Sí. ¿Lori Tharps?
LORI
Yes, I´m Lori. Nice to meet...
SRA. REYES
(cortándole en español)
Sólo en español en esta casa.
Nada de inglés. Nunca.
La Sra. Reyes se gira y entra en la casa. Algo confusa, Lori tarda un momento antes de arrastrar sus maletas al interior.
11. INT. PENSIÓN DE LA SRA. REYES – DÍA – CONT.
Lori deja sus maletas en la entrada y sigue a la Sra. Reyes mientras ésta le va mostrando el lugar con poco entusiasmo. La guía hacia el
ÁREA DE LA COCINA
Sentados a la mesa hay CUATRO CRÍOS REVOLTOSOS de distintas edades, que pasan más tiempo tirándose de los pelos unos a otros y peleándose, que comiendo. La Sra. Reyes parece no reparar en su mal comportamiento.
SRA. REYES
(siempre en español)
Estos son mis hijos.
La comida es a las dos en punto.
Si llegas tarde, no comes.
La Sra. Reyes mira significativamente a Lori.
SRA. REYES
Has llegado tarde.
Echa a andar por el pasillo y Lori la sigue.
LORI
Yes, well, I had to take the bus...
SRA. REYES
¡En español!
Lori está a punto de volver a empezar en español, pero decide dejarlo. La Sra. Reyes la guía hacia un tramo de escaleras.
