Italian term or phrase: sovraccarichi accidentali
The text discusses the function of concrete edge beams in the restoration of old buildings:

"Le azioni sismiche che vengono prese fondamentalmente in considerazione sono quelle orizzontali. Secondo un’analisi di tipo statico queste si possono schematizzare attraverso forze proporzionali ai pesi delle masse strutturali sottoposte al moto impresso dal sisma, dove per masse strutturali intendiamo i carichi permanenti più un’aliquota di **sovraccarichi accidentali**."

Ragazzini and Hazon Garzani translate "carico accidentale" as live load, but I can find nothing for "sovraccarico accidentale". I've searched the Internet for "live overload" and various other literal translations, but wasn't able to find even one example. However, I did find an Italian page where "sovraccarico accidentale" had been translated as "live load". What I want to know is whether carico/sovraccarico accidentale are the same thing, and can thus be translated with the same term in English and, if not, what is the correct translation for the latter.

TIA

Many thanks to both Elena and Sandy. I'm sorry I couldn't split the points, as you were both very helpful. In the end I chose Sandy's answer because the correct term appears to be temporary/transient overloads, although it was actually Elena who put me on the right track for the former term.

Thanks again,

Sarah

Explanation:
ciao Sarah! penso che carico e sovraccarico siano due cose molto diverse, anche se unite all'aggettivo accidentale

credo che il testo si riferisca ai sovraccarichi "momentanei" che sono da prendere in considerazione (infatti in molti siti italiani dove appare "sovraccarico accidentale" unito a "travi", compare anche la voce "sovraccarico permanente"
ciao!
