sharp / normal costophrenic angles
Spiegazione:
Seni costofrenici espansi should mean not obliterated, no sign of effusion, and therefore normal.
http://it-scienza.confusenet.com/showthread.php?t=4413

The costophrenic angle (place where the diaphragm meets the ribs) is normally sharp - blunting can occur in the presence of effusion or lung hyperexpansion.

Hi Simon, if you google costophrenic sinuses you'll get lots of hits but I have no idea what "espansi" might be.

Take care

neutrale  Lisa Scudieri: Actually Jennifer, I think you'll find it does have something to do with costophrenic sinuses - the problem here seems to be "espansi"

In moderate-to-severe emphysema, chest radiographic findings include bilaterally hyperlucent lungs of large volume, flattened hemidiaphragms with widened costophrenic angles, horizontal ribs, and a narrow mediastinum.

Reference: Costodiaphragmatic recess

Reference information:
A synonym for costophrenic sinus:
"The costodiaphragmatic recess describes the sharp gutter at the junction of costal and diaphragmatic pleurae in each pleural cavity. The recesses act as potential spaces.

During inspiration, the negative pressure of the cavity is reduced so as to induce inferior expansion of the lungs into the recesses.

During expiration, the lungs contract and the parietal pleural margins are drawn into apposition by the surface tension of the film of fluid between them.

The recess, seen as the costodiaphragmatic angle in erect PA chest radiograms, is often filled with a rim of transudate fluid in patients with heart failure. This is radio-opaque and appears as 'blunting' of the angle - a supportive but not pathognomic sign."

More simply:
"1-9. PLEURA
Surrounding each lung individually is a serous cavity called the pleural cavity (figure 1-9). The minute quantity of serous fluid in the cavity serves as a lubricant. This serves to minimize friction for the expansion and contraction of the lungs during breathing.
a. Each lung is covered with a serous membrane called the visceral pleura. The outer wall of the pleural cavity is lined with another serous membrane known as the parietal pleura. Areas of the parietal pleura are variously named according to their
location. The mediastinal pleura form the lateral wall of the mediastinum. The diaphragmatic pleura cover the superior surface of the diaphragm. The costal pleura line the inner surface of the rib cage. The cupolar pleura form a dome-like extension into the root of the neck. It contains the apex of the lung.
b. When each lung is in its smaller volume, its corresponding diaphragmatic pleura lies close to the lower costal pleura. The slit-like cavity between them is called the costophrenic sinus. Fluids of each pleural cavity tend to collect in this sinus since it
is the lowest area for each. When the diaphragm contracts and flattens out, each costophrenic sinus opens up, and the inferior portion of the expanding lung occupies this space."

I don't think "espansi" ought to be literally translated here and wouldn't necessarily translate it as "widened" in reference to a space. I think it's important to understand the underlying meaning and Alexander gives me the impression that he has done that and conveyed it appropriately and relevantly in English.
