To start, two general points may be made. First, the extent to which law is able to shape these difficult orders is not unconstrained, but is itself shaped by the political and other forces which shape the society in which law functions. Second, and related to the first point, law is not some 'neutral' force which contributes to the organization of society, but which is in some peculiar way detached from that society. The functions of law in any given society cannot be understood without an understanding of the political, social, and economic ideologies that underpin that society and which provide the framework within which law functions. | Translation - Chinese
