Hi, I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good English / German dictionary for the domain Finance/Investment/Banking? I am obviously looking to buy one, as the free ones are not very useful on a professional level. Would be grateful for any suggestions, as this is not my area of expertise. I usually stay away from this domain but was asked to work on this large translation of financial software, as I am experienced in Software translations.

If this is what it sounds like (high-end software for investment professionals?), you may well need an excellent fundamental understanding of reporting standards, trading constructs, corporate finance, the bond market, stock market jargon, international tax law etc. An "are there any dictionaries" approach doesn't bode well. In finance, there are excellent monolingual reference books, but multilingual dictionaries are mostly useless (except in narrow, formalised financial reporting contexts).... See more

Software is of course much more difficult than, say, a financial report. If finance isn't among your areas of expertise, consider not translating financial software. YMMV.

Thank you Joakim Apr 5, 2017

As you can imagine, I have given this plenty of thought, given the scope of the project. Since, however, this will go through a revision step and a second quality/sanity check on the side of the customer, I have decided to take it on. I just would like to have some form of assurance that I am going in the right direction.

Can anyone rate the Pons Financial Dictionary? I usually find them better than Langenscheidt's...

That depends on the software and the financial report (I have translated plenty of the former and hundreds of the latter).

It's more difficult because there is usually much less context. Sometimes just random strings with placeholders. Unfortunately lots of people translate software without ever using it, some of them happily entering whatever first matches they find in their TM...

Thanks all Apr 6, 2017

Yes, the lack of context is an absolute killer in software translations. I do appreciate your comments and suggestions. And hats off to you all specialising in Finance. It's definitely one of the most complex domains out there and not one I would fancy immersing myself into full-time.

Speaking of monolingual dictionaries, can you recommend any in German?

Again, thanks for all your help

No (this looks useful: http://wirtschaftslexikon.gabler.de).
The few good multilingual dictionaries I've seen have been published by auditors' associations.

The best book learning comes from reading The Economist, nonfiction writers on the financial market (such as Michael Lewis) and beginners' texts in stock trading and financial analysis.

Exactly. I currently have a backlog of SW strings to translate and would love to farm some of them them out. However, I don't know anyone I'd trust to do it properly and all my translator friends/colleagues are all too busy to take any on.

In order to properly translate SW strings, they need to give you the actual context. The actual program, screenshots/screencasts, PDF print-outs of the UI elements, etc. etc. etc. sans context, they might as well run them through Google Translate.
