It’s kind of expected, given that Trados 2007 is, well, from 2007, and its development stopped then. You may want to consider Wordfast Classic, which works just like the Word add-on of Trados 2007, is still being actively developped and supports Word 2016.

... because Studio doesn't need Word at all to function! But there are some features that make use of Word, such as the realtime preview and spellchecking, or the grammar checker app from the OpenExchange for example.

Studio 2014 cannot handle Word 2016 filetypes for translation, but that's different.

SDL Legit + Studio to handle bilingual Workbench files Nov 10, 2015

I also have a couple of clients who still use Trados 2007, and I'm also using Office 2016. Since I use Studio 2015 for everything, I haven't even tried using Workbench + Word 2016 to handle jobs that require unclean Workbench files. What I do is use either Workbench or SDL Legit (an Open Exchange app) to pre-segment the files and then translate them in Studio.

I have also Word 2003 and I use it Nov 11, 2015

Robert Rietvelt wrote:

but I am not prepared to pay for the new Trados 2015 especially after updating to Windows 10 at no charge. I don't understand why I cannot pretend from SDL what I pretend from Volkswagen, i.e. good and loyal service.
I have Trados 3.5, Trados 2007, Trados 2009 and Trados 2014. I think that I can be treated as a faithful customer.
Question: do you have Trados 2014?
Another question: how do you solve the problem of features which are lost when converting a Word 2007 to 2015 file into a Word 2003 file?

It is interesting to note that most translators stay on the side of SDL instead of defending their rights. This is one of the reasons why translators a less respected and paid than lawyers, doctors, bookkeepers etc., although their profession is very demanding. Try to be less than respectful with a lawyer or a doctor and you will see the reaction of the whole category.

Let's put this into a reasonable perspective Nov 11, 2015

Tacito

I assume you are aware of the fact that when SDL Trados Studio 2014 was released to market, Office 2016 did not exist yet. As this product has been launched very shortly ago, SDL first needs to make this product compatible and this will require some time. You mention that you don't want to pay for the upgrade to Studio 2015. This is your right, but this also means that you accept to stick with the capabilities of your current Studio version.

You cannot expect the software vendor to make older software versions (in this case Studio 2014) compatible with the very latest third-party software for free. It was your choice to upgrade very early to the most recent version of Office. It was your decision, but having done this, you should also accept that the price to pay in order to become compatible with this choice is to also upgrade the other pieces of software (in this case Studio). In my opinion, this is simply fair. You could have sticked to the current version of Office, in which case you would not have faced any problem and there would not have been any need to upgrade.

It is current practice that compatibility with more recent third-party software is only introduced with new versions of a software, this is not specific to SDL, most software vendors have the same policy.

Dear Tacito Nov 11, 2015

I wanted to answer your question, but Walter beat me to it. I totally agree with him on this subject.

By the way, Trados 7 only works till Word (Microsoft) 2003, after that (higher version), it won't clean, that is to say, only with a special Macro, and only for Workbench. TagEditor, well...... good luck!

Well. I do have an answer on that one too. No, we (or I) don't stay or stick on the side of SDL. We all try to find the right tool, and in my case it is SDL, for others, who knows.

If I understand your last comment correctly, we are not "less respected" then lawyers or doctors because we are staying on the side of SDL, we are only it paid less (such is reality).

SDL is less uncompromising Nov 12, 2015

Dear Mr. Blaser, dear Mr. Robert Rietvelt

On October 28, 2015 I have contacted SDL Support and told them that I cannot open Word 2016 files with my Trados 2014.
Mr. Whale of SDL sent me immediately an email containing the following statement.
“Please monitor your emails for news of any patches that may be released that fixes the compatibility.

So this is simply a “patch” that “fixes” a problem, and a company like SDL, has the capability of easily delivering it with a reasonable delay.
This is also the reason, why SDL refrains from releasing a categorical and uncompromising statement like yours, otherwise analysts, shareholders and customers will draw the obvious conclusions.
In Italy we say: “don’t be more catholic than the pope”
About the statement “You cannot expect the software vendor to make older software versions (in this case Studio 2014) compatible with the very latest third-party software for free”, the juridical situation is a little more complex, but a lawyer will never give you a consultancy on this subject at no charge.
This is also one of the reasons why lawyers are respected.
It is however easy to imagine why Microsoft keeps releasing updates including security patches for threats, that did not exist previously.

Actually, I agree totally with you, but a friend of mine once told me: "Why upgrading/-dating when everything is just working fine?" Lets turn this "wisdom" 180 degrees around: "why buying the latest versions?" What I mean to say is, what was wrong with your former Word-version? Although Studio is Windows based, do you really think that Microsoft takes Trados into account when they develop a new version? I don't think so. You could have known this. Common sense!

Wait a year, there will be updates and -grades. You are simply knocking on the door too soon. For example, I can upgrade to Windows 10, and I will, but at the end, when all the bugs are solved and all programmes I got on my computer are totally compatible with this new OS.

In short, you are too fast (patience is a virtue).

To come back on that friend of mine, he had another advice: "always wait till SP 1 is out, preferable SP 2.".

I rest my case.

PS) Funny, but we in Holland say (freely translated): "somebody is MORE catholic than the pope". Small change, but maybe it makes sense in this whole discussion (or maybe not).

Dear Mr. Rietvelt
Your contribution to this forum is important because it places the complaint of Mrs. Miyata in a general perspective, much larger than Trados or SDL.
In this perspective I must admit that for me the problem is actually irrelevant. Translation agencies account for less than 10% of my turnover. My most important (regular) customers are end-users, i.e. large companies, where the documentation department is being managed by people, who are highly competent in both technology and documentation and rely on the specialists in their agencies worldwide to verify the translations. This is a cooperation based on mutual confidence and respect. My only obligation is to deliver a complete translation solution. I keep and maintain the translation memories and they rely on my analysis for each and every order.
Well managed companies don’t afford to waste time with updates, upgrades, new versions etc. especially in the case of translation software. Therefore one of them sends me Office files from 2003 to 2013 and the other one .ttf files and they don’t care how I process them.
Fifteen years ago my situation was different, I translated for agencies, therefore I have used Alps (of Alpnet), Translator’s Studio (USA), Transit, Trados 3.5 to 2014, Trado GXT, SDLX, Wordfast, across, Geoworkz, and Memsource and I have chosen the best one for myself.
Learning all these software packages with the respective termbase management systems required a lot of patience, but eventually an event changed my mind.
I had Trados Studio 2009 and a translation agency suddenly pretended Trados 2014 telling me that I can buy the update from someone, whom they recommended, at a reduced price. I contacted SDL directly, and they told me, that the “reduced” price, was the regular one.
Now I had the absolute evidence of what I suspected about the whole business. Being blackmailed by a translation agency based in a country where, being Italian, I sometimes hear allusion to “mafia”, “camorra” etc. has not been a pleasure.
Therefore I decided to pretend from any partner in business the same loyalty and generosity that I practice with my customers.
You are certainly younger than I, so you are morally entitled to be supported in your professional development by established companies, instead of being obliged to pay toll at any step forward. Instead of paying scholarships to chosen people, large companies should make the tools required for success more accessible. This is why I deeply disagree with Mr. Blaser.

Hi Yuko,
How did you manage to have the SDL Trados addon on the Word 2016 ribbon? I understand it doesn't work anyhow, but I tried different options and I definitively do not see [SDL Trados] in Office 2016.
Just to know...
Thanks
