I was watching the DVD of this movie over the weekend, and recognized her immediately.

Some of the women contestants are really annoying, if you ask me. But lots of times, that's one of the prerequisites for getting on these shows - you have to be real enthusiastic, animated, and bubbly.

复旦大学房地产研究中心主任尹伯成认为,仍然要积极看待房产税的作用,至少它会抑制一部分投资需求,令成交量能够迅速回落。

确实是早就该实行了。中国试行房产税,似乎主要目的是为了调控高涨的房价。其实,征收房产税的主要目的不该仅仅如此。如果中国像美国那样把所征的房产税用于教育等各种公益事业,那么豪宅对门的中小学就不会穷得连课桌都买不起,12年义务教育也就不会成为一句空话了。

I'm not sure if there are any real estate taxes in China. If not, then that is a factor that also comes into play when considering the purchase of an investment property. In other words, the one-to-one comparision of price-to-rent-ratio in China vs. the U.S. would be skewed in that case. In Austin for example, one is looking at more like 30+ years to recoup one's initial investment of $200k rather than the 16.67 years derived from the simple price-to-rent ratio, provided that the real estate value stays stable over the years.

In most cases, people who speculate in real estate are banking on the properties to appreciate in a relatively short period to make a quick profit. These people are also known as flippers. Some of them got caught with their pants down in this big real estate downturn.

I've seen firsthand how a heavy real estate tax burden could negatively impact a company's bottom line, and some of the things a company would do to mitigate its effect ...

During the 1993 company downsizing(due to the sudden downturn in demand for mainframes), IBM implemented many cost-cutting measures. Among other things, the company gave away a lot of real estate it owned in order to cut its real estate tax bill. In the Mid-Hudson Valley where I was, some underutilized buildings owned by the company were completely razed to substantially reduce the appraisal value of the land the buildings stood on. Of course, lower appraisal values meant lower tax bills.

Largely to eliminate huge unwanted tax liabilities, the famous IBM corporate building located on Madison Avenue in Manhattan was also put up for sale. It eventually sold at a much-depressed price the following year ...

If two of the mightiest corporate names in the history of the United States cannot tolerate or support a major headquarters building in New York, perhaps the city is doomed. At the very least, such a major shift in corporate thinking reflects a serious decline in the city’s stature as the sine qua non of the business world, especially since both abandonments occurred prior to the explosion of interest in the World Wide Web on the Internet with all of its implications for global connectivity via computers rather than in person.

IBM’s decision was the more understandable of the two as the company had endured more than a decade of ludicrous mismanagement of the business it virtually invented: personal computers. It actually needed the money. Indeed, its sale of the building was not as dastardly as its outrageous decision to close its splendid, very elegant, museum-like exhibition space that had hosted a most impressive series of great art exhibitions. Not surprisingly, the company soon decided to also sell off many of its most valuable paintings from its famous art collection, which had helped garner the company a world-wide reputation as a leading corporate patron of the arts. It happened to sell the art when the market was down considerably, also.

The decision of both companies to sell their famous skyscrapers at almost distress prices in a real estate depression was an early and very disturbing sign of corporate downsizing that no doubt warmed stockholders’ hearts while depressing the hearts of all civilized people. If the board of directors of the companies had been more astute and waited a few years, they could have realized substantially greater sales results as the real estate market boomed in the late 1990's. So much for "shareholders' interests" and "corporate responsibility." So much for neighborhood, to say nothing of urban and civic and responsibility.

Casa Loma (Spanish for Hill House) is a Gothic Revival style house in midtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that is now a museum and landmark. It was originally a residence for financier Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. Casa Loma was constructed over a three-year period from 1911–1914.

During the depression that followed World War One, the City of Toronto increased Casa Loma's annual property taxes from $600 per year to $1,000 a month, and Pellatt, already experiencing financial difficulties, was forced to auction off $1.5 million in art and furnishings for only $250,000. Sir Henry was able to enjoy life in the house for less than ten years, leaving in 1923.

Hearst Corporation also donated Hearst Castle to the state of California in 1957.

【明報專訊】北京擬開全國先河,市政府擬禁用英文字母做門牌、樓牌的組成部分,但不少市民感到費解,認為有關規定是矯枉過正。

據《北京晨報》報道,《門牌樓牌設置規範》在北京市質監局網站公開徵集意見,意見稿其中規定:樓號、單元號及戶號只能使用阿拉伯數字依次順序編號,不得跳號,不得使用外文字母。換句話說,未來A座、B幢、C樓等命名方式將被禁止,而「不得跳號」則意味「4、13、14」等「不吉數字」也須使用。

有市民質疑:「難道非要變成『北七樓乙座11層5號』才好聽?」亦有網友質疑說,是否也要將車牌號中的英文字母去掉。
