那可难说了. 谁知道他们采用什么标准 - 特别是对在中国大陆住过的人员. 中国社会当年之闭塞, 即便是中央情报局我看也搞不清每个人的底细.

不过现在开放了, 他们大概还能打听清楚

Well, I don't and Chance, neither. It's not for free thinkers like us, I guess.

It sounds like an interesting job except you need to move to Washington, D.C. - plus all the bureaucratic nonsense like security clearance they make you go through.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

p.s. The ad disappeared as soon as I made mention of it. You can't offer free advertising over here - not even to the U. S. Government.

But I think they'll intermittently keep putting it up.

所以啦. 往往诚实的、够格的被卡, 真正的坏人却得逞. 这可以归结到 bureaucracy 头上.

BTW, 那个电影我没看过

Worst Places to Retire Dec 28, 2007

Austin, Texas
Hard Time Getting a Doctor Who Takes Medicare

A 2006 Texas Medical Association survey found that only 43% of Austin doctors would take new Medicare patients. (The numbers aren’t much better in Denver, where a 2001 survey by the Denver Medical Society and the HealthOne Alliance Foundation found only 40% of doctors were open to new Medicare patients.)
The rate Medicare pays doctors is so low that many are refusing to take new Medicare patients. That used to be a problem primarily for rural areas, but now it's spreading to cities. A 2006 Texas Medical Association survey found that only 43 percent of Austin doctors would take new Medicare patients

Yueyin,

Can you believe this? I don't think this is going to be a problem unique to Austin though, especially if nothing regarding national healthcare gets hashed out between now and when the first wave of baby boomers become Medicare eligible.

Hopefully something would come out of the 2008 election process. Several of the Democratic candidates have this issue in their platform.

Places to Retire? Dec 29, 2007

Hi, it's Friday night again. I found the the articles in the above links interesting and make a lot of sense. I am not looking for a retirement place yet, but it is never too early to start looking. Wouldn't it be nice if one could have a place in the north for the summer and one in the south for the winter?

There are actually a lot of places in the USA where land and houses are incredibly cheap, even compared to houses in China. Maybe I shall quit working as a translator and become a Realtor! Here are some links just for fun. See what I found:

Want to own a piece of San Francisco?
You can have a piece of this wonderful city for $1,900. But your piece is going to be under water:

Or if you want something real, nice and big, you can have that too. For $50,000, you can have a building as big as the US Consulate in Shanghai, plus 2 acres of land, for you to plant vegetables or raise chickens, pigs, cows or horses. But it's in Kansas (in the middle of nowhere). I have seen for $5,000 you can buy a big church building or an entire school in Kansas, so you can say that "I am with God all the time, even in my sleep!"

If you want anything at all in Monterey, most starts at $ one million, or it is not a house!

Steve,

I can't believe this! As I know, Austin was ranked the best city to live in the United States in 2003. Now, it becomes one of the worst places to retire! Probably, Austin is good for my son, but not for his parents. Denver doesn't look good, either. Where should I go?

Yueyin and Steve,

Not too long ago, the real estate agents in Silicon Valley are urging people with extra money to go to Texas and buy up property there. Austin, and somewhere north of Dallas were the places they recommended most. I think they learned that from "温州炒房团"!

All of you should come over to Bolivia, South America with me. There you can be really retired! The country is about 34 times greater than Taiwan with about 7 million people and 2 - 4 million of them are constantly visiting and working in other countries. My city Cochabamba is named "Garden City (Ciudad Jardín)" and you can imagine how beautiful it is! No industry to pollute the air! Medical care, excellant and reasonable! Plenty of medical doctors trained in Cuba & the States coming back to their nest. The Cochabambinos are called "swallows (colondrinas)" because they go out and come back. The height and climate are just about the same as Kunming, Yunan which is a partner city of Cochabamba, Bolivia. A well build modern house with a swimming pool would cost less than $180,000 and agricultural patches $500 per acre. There is an international community of about 4000 people, most of them speak English or German. Nice place to get retired, but not good for young people to find a job. I would like to come back to set up a medicare center for elder people and create some job opportunities for the younger ones. Still a long way to go, but who knows? Maybe I just bring all the aunts and uncles together with me back to that city for a development project?

You wouldn't believe it. Dec 29, 2007

David Shen wrote:

David,

You wouldn't believe it. In the first year, I didn't speak a word in Spanish. My neighbors were either German or English speaking persons. There were about 18 Chinese speaking families from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other South East Asian countries. Quite a few foreign diplomats living in that city, though they go to work on weekdays to La Paz, less than 30 minutes flight and about 40 bucks to and fro. You practically don't need Spanish especially in Cochabamba. It is quite international.

The only problem most of my visitors had was not with the language, but with the altitude --- the city lies 2400 - 2700 meters above sea level. Some of them dropped at the La Paz Airport when I went to pick them up. Then, I sent a medicine called "Sorojchi pills" to those who intended to visit me and asked them to take one pill 2 hours before landing. The problem was solved. La Paz Airport lies 4200 meters above sea level, while the center area 3600 above sea level.

Anyway, the most beautiful city in Bolivia is Cochabamba, because there is plenty of fresh water running down the cordilleras around the city. In the small towns nearby, they speak Qechua, a language I never learned except some simple words. But I travelled around quite a lot, even through the area where people are said to be cannibals and met a lot of nice people.

By the way, don't forget to have your camera with you!
