BTW, where the BOOST is made?...

Good question. It could be made in China for all we know. I just checked the Fluval brand pressurized canister of CO₂ I use for my aquarium; it's made in Taiwan.

Anyway, inhaling pure oxygen isn't gonna solve the problem; I was only joking. The crucial thing to do is filter out the particulates. I'm sure the U.S. Embassy in Beijing has all the air-filtering and air-cleansing technology money can buy.

Yueyin,

I've actually seen this story before. And it wasn't just a few days ago. The media sometimes recycle feature stories like this. I've noticed it with CBS also.

Gary Locke's interview with CNN before departing China Mar 1, 2014

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/world/2014/02/28/china-us-diplomat-gary-locke-intv.cnn.html

Gary Locke:
While this program of publishing the air quality started in about 2008, 2009; shortly after I came here, the Chinese Government wanted us to shut it down. And er, but we kept publicizing it, so that more people in China are aware of the air quality. But we also now see a lot of interest by both the Chinese people, the Chinese Government in trying to address this, from cleaning up the fuels that they pump into their automobiles, to shutting down coal-powered power plants, to deploying technology that can actually clean up the air.

Jaime Florcruz:
You've been seen flying on economy class, carrying your own bag, earning praises among Chinese on the Internet for your simple, down-to-earth style. But some also say that these were just publicity stunts, were they?

Gary Locke:
You know this is how we are in America. So many governors and mayors are just everyday people. And in some ways I think that the exposure, the attention to my way of doing things, which is really the typical American way of doing things, has prompted changes within Chinese government, in terms of reducing lavish banquets, requiring more Chinese officials to fly economy class, to be more conscious of the public's funds, and has really, I think, in some ways helped in the campaign that the Chinese leaders have now embarked upon to really stamp out corruption and abuse of power and privilege.

Jaime Florcruz:
You advocated, quite passionately, freedom of information, freedom of speech. Why is that so important to you?

Gary Locke:
We're seeing, already, here in China, a large movement among the people using social media to express their views, whether it's concerns about the environment, concerns about unsafe, impure, adulterated food or medicine, to even concerns about corruption.
And I think that China really needs to unleash the full creative powers and ability of its own people, who are so talented, who are so dynamic, who are so energetic, who have thoughts and dreams of their own. And the Chinese Government should not fear the expressions of the people of China. So we really believe that China should live up to its own constitution of freedom of speech. These are universal rights and values, not an American value, or a Western value. These are universal values.

A silver lining to the smog-cloud might be the military advantage it offers. Chinese military theorist Rear Admiral Zhang Zhaozhong told the Beijing Youth Daily that smog could be a defense against "laser weapons", given that heavy smog can impede or block the technology.
"Smog with PM2.5 readings of 500-600 is virtually impenetrable to lasers. In clear weather, laser weapons have a range of 10 kilometers, but smog can reduce this to less than 1 kilometer," he said, although later was forced to defend his remarks against accusations of naivety and advocating a reckless defense theory.

The two predictions of Sylvia Browne that completely discredited her psychic ability for me were: a) her prediction of the demise of IBM in 1993, and b) her prediction of the election of Al Gore as U.S. president in year 2000. In my opinion, these two events, had they occurred, would have had relatively more impact on U.S. society as a whole compared to those listed on her wiki page. That's probably why I remember them so well.

World's Best Airport Mar 3, 2014

Biden: LaGuardia like a 'third world country'
CNN's Dana Davidsen

(CNN) – LaGuardia airport is notorious for older crowded terminals and other constraints that contribute to horrid flight delays. And Vice President Joe Biden doesn’t appear to be a big fan.

"If I blindfolded someone and took them at 2 o'clock in the morning into the airport in Hong Kong and said 'where do you think you are?' They would say, 'this must be America. This is a modern airport,'" he said on Thursday. "If I took them blindfolded and took them to LaGuardia airport in New York, he would like 'I must be in some third world country.' I'm not joking."

http://business.financialpost.com/2013/05/01/vancouver-international-ranks-among-10-best-airports-in-the-world/
To give American travelers a look at what they’re missing, we’ve put together a list of the world’s best airports, based on the 2013 World Airport Awards, announced this month by leading airline reviewer Skytrax.

The awards, which include categories for best terminal, shopping, security, cleanliness, dining, and more, are determined by public opinion. More than 12 million people responded to this year’s survey.

As President Obama noted in a press conference Tuesday, the highest ranked U.S. airport is Cincinnati at #30. Not very impressive.

http://www.worldairportawards.com/Awards_2013/Airport2013.htm

Beijing Capital International Airport ranks 5th.

Hong Kong International Airport ranks 4th.
