Oh, I hate it. Our current city infrastructure cannot support the influx of all these newcomers. A few weeks ago, I read that Austin ranks among the top 10 cities for the nation's worst traffic, right behind NYC.

I can't account for that ranking though. Traffic is indeed bad on I35, but it can't be that bad.

Documentary on Mao May 30, 2013

Yueyin,

I really enjoyed our visit the other day. Thanks for coming all the way out here to chat with me.

I just saw a preview of this hour-long documentary titled "Making Mao". The show time is 10pm on KLRU Q (PBS) tonight. It repeats at 2AM. I plan on taping it.

Interesting documentary May 30, 2013

Steve,

Thank you so much for the hospitality you extended to me during my visit. It’s always pleasant and beneficial to chat with you.

I've watched the documentary. Everything looks and sounds so familiar.

If you go back to Beijing one day, you would be amused by the fact that almost all taxi drivers there may have a photo of Chairman Mao hanging in their cars.

I can’t imagine what would happen when the bubbles burst someday and what it would mean to the ordinary people in China.

BTW, look at those fake business signs such as KFC, Starbucks, Nokia, Adidas, Nike, PiageT and etc. Nowadays, cheating is one of the most important aspects in business practices in China!

On-going saga of the red-hot Chinese real estate market Jun 3, 2013

One of Shanghai's high-end real estate developments, "Thames Town", fashioned after old English-style neighborhoods, was once again mentioned in Lesley Stahl's story. I remember it being featured in another "60 Minutes" segment six or seven years ago while still in development. Back then, the developers certainly had high hopes for it.

At the time, the CBS report certainly impressed the heck out of me, as could be seen by a couple of my old postings from 7 years ago. I was relatively new to the ProZ.com website. And before discovering the site, I really haven't been paying attention to what was going on in China. In the blink of an eye, China seemed to have transformed itself into a totally different new world.

What I hear... Jun 12, 2006

Last night "60 Minutes", a weekly TV program on CBS, had a segment about Chinese suburbs going European. On the outskirts of Shanghai, suburbs are being developed that resemble old Europe, with names like Thames Town that cater to the newly rich, wealthy neighborhoods complete with cobble stone streets, pubs, and cathedrals.

Lo and behold... I actually found the video clip I was referring to on CBS's website.

...

It's an interesting little clip if nothing else. It certainly provides some insight into how the rest of the world views China's ongoing progress and development.

But now we find out the neighborhood and its cathedral mostly serve as a ceremonial facility for weddings.

All these empty developments and empty towns sure give a new meaning to the old Chinese military tactic of "空城计".

All the cars shown in the 1st picture were parked along the street in front of the church. I guess they were driven there by people attending the weddings.

If you ask me, the lone woman sitting at her front stoop really cheapens the place. IMO they need a Home Owners Association deed restriction put in place. BTW, that reminds me of the saying: you can take the person out of the trailer park, but you can't take the trailer park out of the person.

Otherwise, it is a really nice neighborhood. Empty, but nice. With the throngs of people everywhere you go in China, IMO that is the ideal kind of place to live. Of course, affordability would be the main issue.

"The World According to China" by Hannah Beech Jun 8, 2013

This week's TIME cover story ... examines China’s place in the world as it forges ahead into a new decade of leadership under recently-installed President Xi Jinping. For years, the narrative surrounding the world’s most populous country has been one of ascension, of “rise.” Now, as Xi meets U.S. President Obama for a two-day conclave in California on June 7, China has arrived and is in many regards an equal partner to the U.S., the existing global hegemon.
